Travelling with children is a rewarding but complicated activity. Seeing your new location through the eyes of your child can help you to appreciate it that much more, but there is also so much more to think about. Getting from A to B seems to take at least twice as long as it should; there are so many extra bags and extra worries about safety. Having the perfect accommodation when you travel will make the whole experience much more stress-free. No matter what else may occur, at least you have a secure base to retreat back to. Most people who regularly travel with children prefer to stay in self-catered accommodation, rather than use a hotel. This is for a number of reasons:
Firstly, self-catered apartments and houses come with a living space. This is somewhere for you all to sit and relax together. You do not have to cram into a hotel room, at the end of a long day you have space to play games and watch TV. The kitchen and dining room area that is part of self-catered accommodation is very useful for keeping costs down and keeping the little ones happy, especially if they happen to be a fussy eater. The hotel breakfast is all well and good, but can be a challenge if they don't have the right cereal etc. Being able to feed your child the food they like and are used to will help them to feel settled and calm. Having your own kitchen also drastically cuts down on costs. You can make a picnic to take with you for the day and have nights in. It's great to try local restaurants when you are on holiday, but it can be expensive and after a long day the kids might be too tired to be taken out again.
If you have toddlers and young children it can be a good idea to take a few safety essentials with. Socket covers, corner cushions and drawer catches won't take up much space, but will mean you can relax more, knowing that your little one is less likely to injure themselves on the fixtures and fittings of your holiday rental. Take a few moments when you first arrive to check the accommodation for possible hazards and anything that is loose, such as towel rails etc that your child might accidentally break. Report anything you find to the owners straight away, they might be able to fix it straight away for you. If you are planning a vacation, book your accommodation in advance. It is lovely as an adult to turn up somewhere new and find somewhere you like the look of to stay. But when you have children tagging along the urgency of the situation takes away any pleasure, especially as not all accommodation providers are family-friendly.
