PERMANENT

In the branch of ephemeral architecture I have developed and specialized in the production of music festivals, in the city of Monterrey leading as Founder and Creative Director of ROMA 212 Creative House a unique architecture firm in Mexico with this design approach. In the segment of permanent architecture, a primary focus is presented in education and community service with both traditional and advanced proposals in manufacturing and technology processes. The Univeristy Campus and the Community Center are the only projects that contruction was led by other companies, with a controlled supervision of the design teams. Work has tought me that 1 to 1 material build up inspires the designer to think with his hands.

VENUE MASTER PLANNING

EPHIMERL

Over the past few years, I have sought to shape people’s dreams through the art of creating spaces. My work is based primarily on the experimentation of design in ephemeral architecture supported by digital manufacturing for the entertainment business, together with permanent architecture for fashion and education industry in Mexico. The story of my work presented in this portfolio is described in different projects from multiple scales and typologies where I have developed as an architect.

VENUE MASTER PLANNING This plan shows the layout for Pa’l Norte Music Fest, the 3rd leading festival in México with 170,000 attendees on its 6ºth edition in a 2-day event. In show business and massive events venue master planning is fundamental for logistical operation. A wide range of parameters have to be taken into consideration such as a contingency plan, food supply, toilets, service roots, power supply, mass spectators flows, etc. To make this happen additional infrastructure needs to get build to create a differential consumer experience. The list of images below show a preview of the common interventions and structure typologies I get to design, D & G are detailed in further content on this portfolio.

STAGE -CLUB SOCIAL ESCENARIO

The stage is the heart of a music festival where the show is presented towards an audience. The Social Club stage was one of the 7 main stages that Festival Pa’l Norte had in 2017. The structure had a rounded scheme with a central tower that served as a control cabin or “Front of House”. The tower worked as support for the cover that shaded the enclosed space for an average of 7,000 attendees per function. The platform was covered by a cantilever structure of 4.8m where the audio and screen was suspended.

WELCOME ARCO ARCH

The welcome arch in music festivals is a phenomenon similar to a triumphal arche. These installations resemble a sense of brad empowerment of the events and had become a traditional check in spot with the popular selfie. My evolution of this temporary and abstract installation throughout multiple events has been a constant experimentation with alternative materials in search of an artistic and spatial expression. Inspired strongly in the concept of catenary as a design process employed by Antonio Gaudi exposing gravity and movement into the design. These series of spaces are a result of the use of lines, colours, densities of solids and voids that create a memorable scene for the attendees.

The installation of the Pa’l Norte 2017 welcom arch was consisted in a suspended grid with about 4,000 meters of polypropylene cord with a combination of colours form the festival identity of red, blue and yellow. The manufacturing process consisted of 43 axes of asymmetric curtains cut by hand using a sliding mold on the floor previously cutted on CNC. The variation in heights of the curve generated a void from a fragment sphere. By nightfall light and colours gave life together with the movement of the wind.

ITINERANT INSTALATIONS Since 2015 a series of festival tours has been commissioned. A complex breif consisting in a series of instalations to be prefabri-

cated TIJUANA , transported and producced such as a stage, bars, vip hospitality, welcome arch, etc. The main challenge was to mount an event per city of an average of 5,000 asistance in a lampse of 5 days and dismantle in 2 days. An important problem to solve was MEXICALI storage space in trailers to save budget in transportation together with build and tear down in a shorter laps of time.

ELEVEN PEOPLE BOUTIQUE This store merchandise display has a peculiar custom made system with a modular function that allows change in position of the presented garments. This gives variation for alternative fashion concept without requiring any tools. The project has a wide range of precise design detailing in other fixtures such as the chandelier, curtains, mirrors, high end carpentry and digitally CNC fabrication furniture like the central table and the dressing room bench. The store was inaugurated in mid of August of 2013, designed and build in collaboration with Industrial Designer Emilio Alvarez. The following year the next eleven people store was build.

HARMONY SCHOOL

This parametric permanent art installation consisted in an interweaved structure from over 200 plywood sections previously laser cuted and labelled individually. This project was conceived in one-month time considering design, prefabrication previously done in Monterrey and assembled in Saltillo in 5 days. The form follows a three-dimensional Fibonacci pattern creating a siluet of a tree that links the school values and vision of learning from nature. The sculpture has over 80 coloured origami and laser cut birds that hang on the ceiling and are oriented with the rotated lighting fixtures. The building was officialy open the 13th of August of 2016, designed and build in collaboration with Architect Alejandro Arcos and Industrial Designer Veronica Rodriguez.

UNIVERSIDAD CAROLINA MASTER PLAN

The project forms part of the university campus of Carolina University in the center of the city of Saltillo, Coahuila. A 6.7 hectares terrain with irregular topography and steep slopes that form part of the only hill in the metropolitan area of Saltillo. This forest functions as the only green lung of the city center, populated mainly by evergreen oak, oak and walnut oak, some of them over 100 years old with a natural stream crossing from one side to the other. An initial schematic master plan was commissioned to create an alternative space for learning. Overall urban planning tends to be at slow pace in Mexico, but this project was the exception. After the first milestones the new University came up with a high demand of admissions and the need for an immediate new classroom building was born. Architects Javier Leal and Ernesto Marroquin campus master plan where part of the design team.

The building consists of two volumes; each with 4 and 3 modules both of 2 levels, divided and articulated by the core of services and the stairs to the center. Ideally, and according to the general vision of the university that seeks to cement citizens’ values based on an ethic that understands the human being as a social being, urban and in co-existence with its natural environment, the building moves to save all Trees that spreads on the site. As a monastery or medieval castle, the modules are deployed according to the topography and are offset to save the totality of trees. This gap allows us to generate an experience that is enriched by the light that is filtered in a particular way for each module. That is, each room has an experience and a space of its own. The structure of the building is apparent concrete, the facade uses red brick that is characteristic of the region, and enclosures, arcades of frames and railings of steel, industrial materials, alluding to the industrial past of the city of Saltillo. The building was inaugurated in August of 2015, designed in collaboration with architects, Manuel Martínez and Yolanda Ceballos.

COMMUNITY CENTER TThe Independencia Community Center, inaugurated in September 2011, was a non profit social project designed by professors and students of the “Catedra Blanca” a specialized design unit of Tecnológico de Monterrey, professors Agustin Landa, Manuel Martínez, David Benítez and Roberto Romero; Students Abelardo González, Adbel Reséndiz, Alejandro Saldaña, Alejandro Madero, Carla Celis, David Martínez, Enrique de la Concha, Lorena Darquea and Rocío López. The Community center is a building of 7,100 square meters located in the Colonia Independencia, at the same time one of the most traditional and conflictive of the city of Monterrey. It provides services to the inhabitants of the area and promotes social development actions. The building is organized in four orthogonal volumes around a garden, articulated by modules of services and vertical circulations. Formally, the four volumes are composed of concrete structural frames that function as louvers. In the outer perimeter, one of every three spaces between the frames is intended for hydraulic, electrical and air conditioning installations. The frames and the order of the installations allow the interior spaces to be easily subdivided and respond to different needs. The center program consists in a library, closed basketball court, gym, a kitchen for lessons, and music classrooms. and a space of its own. The structure of the building is apparent concrete, the facade uses red brick that is characteristic of the region, and enclosures, arcades of frames and railings of steel, industrial materials, alluding to the industrial past of the city of Saltillo.
