Timeless landmarks of Cyprus:

AVAKAS GORGE Avakas Gorge is one of the most spectacular sites in Cyprus, but is toured by only a handful of tourists and holiday-makers. If you are a lover of vivid impressions, walking, hiking obstacle trails, nature riddles and rare plants, then Avakas is just the spot you need to visit!

VAKAS is a trekker’s paradise. Here, you will plunge into breathtaking views of the endless diversity of local flora and fauna, including the endangered spices — Centaurea akamantis, which is endemic, has violet flowers and is unique to this gorge. You can recognise it by the nameplate attached to it as are all rare species in this wildlife sanctuary. Apparently carved from the limestone in the area, the gorge rises to about 30 metres and then becomes too narrow at one point, making it quite the challenge to get across. The signposted serpentine trail snakes along the river which created the natural wonder

thousands of years ago. In the rainy season, it can turn into a rush. Do not be afraid, as there is a special route in the gorge, traced by the Forest Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus. The equipped trail is 3 km length, but you can go out of its track, that is, if you are a daredevil and adrenaline junkie. For the most curious tourists, you could test your endurance by penetrating inland, climb the rocks in some sites, and wade through the fallen trees. Entering the gorge, you go through the nature, then the rocky path, before continuing deeper into the narrowing interior. At some points, the rocks dangle just right above

your head. This spectacular view is scary yet it excites and enchants with its beauty and rush. If you pay closer attention to Cyprus postcards, you’ll notice that Avakas is one of the views printed on them. The gorge walls are “wavy” and if you are a Kodak enthusiast, then you will have a full time and some of the most fantastic pictures. The gorge is rich in species, amongst the variety of trees, you’ll find pines, cypresses, juniper, fig trees, ferns, and oaks, and also, lots of wildflowers. Fauna runs wild in the form of foxes, hares, falcons, ravens, night owls, reptiles and amusing wild mountain goats, which you can see always near, or atop the mountain rocks!

USEFUL TIPS WHEN PLANNING TO VISIT THE GORGE • Take precautions! respect the signs, especially warning of the dangerous sites and possible rock falls. • Choose comfortable footwear, without any heels, with reliable shoe sole, preferably secure and quick dry. It is prohibited to wear shoes or flip-flops: lots of slippery stones in the area. • It is not allowed to enter the gorge when the weather is overcast. In a matter of minutes, rain can turn a brook into a powerful stream, which will ravage every and anything in its path. • It is not recommended to enter the gorge alone without first informing someone of your plans. This site is not only beautiful; it is also dangerous! • Make sure to take a lot of drinking water! • Be prepared to meet… wild goats. If these animals appear on the trail, they can scare you nuts. Just in case, take a stick or some protective equipment with you in order to fend off aggressive animals. • The gorge is not far from Paphos but you can reach it only by car, buses do not go there.

Not all wonders and secrets of the gorge are accessible to us yet. One of the most astonishing and enigmatic places of Avakas is closed to tourists and holiday-makers, it is impossible to get there without a special pass and equipment. Some years ago, local shepherds discovered a door in the rock. The scientists still have not completely mapped out the area, but at the moment, a narrow path has been discovered which leads down to a dungeon, and at 70 metres deep, there are ancient catacombs, paths to rooms and underground halls forming a labyrinth. This mystery dungeon has not been fully explored yet, but arrowheads and pottery have been found inside. Indeed, Avakas Gorge is one of the pearls of Cyprus. Although you’d have to spend a day to explore it, you definitely won’t lack for excitement, thrill, and pleasure, as you see Cyprus from a new perspective. 7

– What vision did you have when you imagined/ thought of Edge Boutique? – A vision of a completely new proposal in the field of modern fashion. Both my team and I personally, are very happy and proud of the boutique and the impressive response we experienced during the first months of its operations. Our feelings and emotions are mixed; On the one hand is the stress and the anxiety during the preparations all those months before the opening and then the great thrill when we faced the very positive response of the audience which surpassed all our expectations. It was then that my vision became a reality!

How has fashion influenced your personal life and image of yourself? What inspired that idea of EDGE boutique? – Fashion has always been a part of my life, everything around us is fashion — The colours, the sceneries, our feelings and emotions… All those little things around us 8

SPORTMAX SPRING 2018 SPORTMAX spring 2018 collection is true to the theme of the brand. It’s functional clothes meeting a refined style with elements of the 1940s. Moreover, it’s athleticism and a subtle elegance all in one. It’s kind of basic from a color perspective, including typical sporty colors of white, black, navy blue and tan. Green and light blue were done as accentuating shades accompanied with stripes and a floral print. Skirts, dresses, jackets and tops were in center of attention when talking specific clothing pieces. The silhouette is quite the 1940s with a subtle inverted triangle being present in every other look. The waists are slightly accentuated, often with a striped belt or a same colored one. Except the belts used as details, placement of pockets, flow of fabric, marked hemlines and stripes were used to create the look. The belts, pockets, stripes, materials and marked hemlines all contributed to the functional and sporty look whilst the silhouette, flowy fabrics and style of clothes were slightly reminiscent of the 1940s fashion.

MY REVIEW I’m head over heels for this collection, or close to it. I often promote statement fashion, but I do appreciate minimalism as long as it’s presented with a clear idea as well as executed favorably.

Now I don’t state that SPORTMAX spring 2018 is a collection of minimalism, but it’s simple. It sticks to its basic colors with a few highlights. The prints are centered to mainly stripes and a few looks of floral. It should and could be just another collection embracing the urban, functional, minimalism — but it isn’t. The mix of sportswear and 1940s elegance is not new, but geniusly done here. Where a look lacks interesting colors or prints, it’s compensated by nicely placed pockets or details of stripes. The clothes are designed with wearability in mind, yet with the twist of SPORTMAX. It’s fashion with the designer’s style. I’m always specific with my colors and focus a lot on them, the colors in SPORTMAX spring 2018 collection is no exception. The mix of basics, green, blush and light blue is well done where all the colors balances one another. The m. v. p. of the collection is the stripes though. The randomly placement of the stripes, sometimes done on the clothing piece but other times as an accessory, is what makes the collection different from other collections within the same genre. Is this Atlantis on Cyprus? The disputes about the legendary island of Atlantis, where the Atlantean city was, have dragged on for two millennia since the great Plato described it in his dialogues “Timaeus” and “Critias”.

he answers to the questions, where was Atlantis and where can you find the relics of this fabled Island, are still anybody’s guess. The search for Atlantis has led to hunts in the Atlantic near Morocco, in the Andes, in Brazil, in Ireland, in Romania and even in Antarctica! Many researchers have sought Atlantis in areas around Balearic and Canary Islands. One researcher proposed that Atlantis was on the current British islands and Ireland, drowned because of melting glaciers. The famous diving researcher Jacques-Yves Cousteau almost proved that the remnants of the Minoan civilization found at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea belong to the lost city of Atlantis. Researcher Robert Sarmast discovered a rectangular stretch of land under water in 11 km from Cyprus, which extends to the North-East towards Syria. He insists that it is Cyprus that was the top of the hill and the part of Atlantis. Why did Robert Sarmast seek Atlantis on Cyprus? Some observe that above all, descriptions of Atlantis resemble both the relief and

natural conditions of the Mediterranean Sea Islands. Plato claims Atlantis was rich in metals, and though such a feature is not common to the Mediterranean Sea Islands in the ancient time, it was inherent to Cyprus. Many researchers assume that the Mediterranean Sea Islands are the debris of the lost civilization. As an example, there is an advanced Cretan civilization that mysteriously disappeared when the horrible earthquake occurred. What did Plato know about Atlantis? In his dialogues, he narrates that Atlantis disappeared in one day— “in a horrible twenty-four hours”. Starting on Atlantis, Plato warns that the name of the island itself, like all the other names in his story, is not authentic but translated into Greek. The Egyptians, who first wrote the story about Atlantis, translated Atlantean names in their own way. Solon (Athenian statesman, lawmaker, and one of the “Seven Wise Men” of Greece) told Plato of the island, and he did not see the need to leave the names in their translated Egyptian form and so translated them to Greek. The actual story of the island, according to the legend, begins with the story about the Earth’s separation between three brother Gods: Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. Poseidon, who became the lord of seas, by the lot, received the island of Atlantis, where that time only three people lived: “one man named Evenor, who was born of the Earth at the beginning, his wife Leucippe and their daughter, the beauty Cleito”. He fell in love with Cleito and she married him and bore him five pairs of male twins, who are the first ten kings of Atlantis. The god Poseidon was a caring father and shielded the island with the water rings and two rings of land to protect his family. The Atlanteans then built bridges across the rings and dug canals so that ships could pass into the city or directly into the central island with five stadia (in total about one kilometre in diameter). According to the legend, he also drew hot and cold springs from the land, out of which flowed sweet

waters with healing powers, and fertile land produced a variety of nutritious food. On the island, Poseidon erected temples for Cleito and himself, decorated with silver and gold and surrounded by golden statues and also a luxurious royal palace. It is considered that the island of Atlantis was at a considerable elevation above sea level, with a very steep shore. Around the capital city, the flatland stretched out, surrounded the mountains, which reached the sea. There were legends about this flatland as it was the most beautiful and fertile place on the Earth. It was populated with settlements, separated by the lakes, rivers, meadows, where many wild and domestic animals pastured. In Plato’s dialogue “Timaeus”, Critias, who is an Athenian political figure, narrates the war between Athens and Atlantis, the story is from his grandfather Critias senior’s narration, who, in his turn, retells the story from Solon, who heard it from the wise men of Sais, in Egypt. The plot of the story goes thus: those times, when Athens was the most glorious, powerful and virtuous state, the main adversary was Atlantis. On the island, a kingdom so amazing in its size and power appeared, spanning the whole of Lebanon all the way to Egypt and Europe to Tirrena (western part of Italy). All the forces of the kingdom were aimed at enslaving Athens. Before long, however, the devastating earthquake happened, severe flooding followed it, and one day the island was absorbed by the sea with all its inhabitants, Atlanteans. Plato puts the time of the disaster as “nine thousand years ago”, which is around 9500 year BC. If there is any chance to find Atlantis, did it die twelve thousand years ago? It is highly possible that during the time the walls and the buildings of the city if they are conserved, have changed dramatically by the sea, becoming muddy, and overgrown with algae, anemones and corals; metal and copper have dissolved and wooden constructions disappeared in some centuries after the disaster. Moreover, in the Mediterranean area, for these millennia, several severe earthquakes have happened, and as a result, they may have completely erased the ruins of the enigmatic island.

Whether Atlantis was a reality or just Plato’s fantasy, an attempt to describe the ideal state, we are unable to ascertain this, but possibly his disciple Aristotle was right when he said: “The one who invented Atlantis, then sent it to the bottom of the sea”. 25

Every Orthodox Christian should visit the Holy Land, bow to its shrines, and spend at least a few days praying. This is the land chosen by God, the place of the Lord Jesus Christ and where he lived his earthly life, the Mother of God, Mary, holy prophets, apostles and martyrs of the faith. The shrines of this land are countless and keep growing each year with new discoveries, each of them holding a piece of great holy history. We will try to tell you about the most significant places worth visiting.

Despite numerous raids, the Church of the Nativity of Christ was not destroyed and it is considered one of the most well-preserved temples in Palestine.

BETHLEHEM The Church of the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem is one of the two greatest Christian world shrines. It is built on the very place, where the Saviour of the World was born. The construction of the Church over the Grotto of Nativity was commissioned by St. Queen Helen in 330, and the building was completed by the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. The Holy nativity scene of the Nativity is the underground basilica, which is 12 metres long and 4 metres wide. There is a Star beneath an altar, along the circle in which it is written:” Here Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary”.

JERUSALEM With no doubts, the heart of the Holy Land lies in Jerusalem. It is the very place, where the main shrines of the Christian world stand. Here, the redemption was accomplished by Christ the Saviour. Lots of prophecies and promises from the Old and New Testaments are associated with this city.

The first thing, which every pilgrim always wants to do when coming to the Holy Land, is to bow to the main shrine of the Christian world — the Holy Sepulchre. There are some functioning monasteries in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre territory. The Church is divided between six confessions of the Christian church, each of which has its own chapels and hours for prayers. In the time of Christ, this place was out of the city and after the destruction of Jerusalem, pagan temples were built here by the Romans.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is a huge architectural complex, which consists of Golgotha which is the site of the Crucifixion, the Saviour’s tomb, the Cathedral of the Saviour, the underground Chapel of the Invention of the Life-giving Cross, the Chapel of St. Helena and some other chapels.

GUIDE TO THE HOLY LAND Only in the IV century, during the reign of the St. Emperor Constantine, when the persecution of Christians ceased, did the St. Equal to the Apostles queen Elena, destroy the temples of the idolaters, find the Holy Sepulchre of the Lord, the site of the crucifixion of the Saviour, and the tree of the Life-giving Cross. The erection of the church in honour of Christ’s resurrection took 10 years. At the Temple entrance, there is the Stone of the Anointing, where the body of the Saviour was laid. Under Golgotha, there is the chapel of Adam, who, according to the legend, was buried here. Behind the glass, there is a rock with a cleft appeared in it. The split in the rock appeared at the time of the Saviour’s death on the cross. It is seen that the rock is split not following the biological layers. There is the Chapel of Angels before the Holy Sepulchre, where the angel, who announced the resurrection, sat. Ein Karem is the western end of Jerusalem. Two important events are linked with the place; the birth of John the Baptist and the meeting of the Virgin Mary with Elizabeth, who is the mother of John the Baptist, after the Annunciation. There is a Russian Gornensky nunnery, founded in 1871, in Ein Karem. North from the Garden of Gethsemane, there is the Orthodox Church of the Assumption with the tomb of the Virgin Mary, which was built in the 12th century, and wherein, in 326, St. Helen erected the first church. Here the tombs of the parents of the Virgin Mary Joachim and Anna, and Mary’s husband St. Joseph lay. In the lowest part of the Church, there is a tomb, in which the apostles buried the Virgin Mary. She was taken to the sky in her body, so, after the tomb was opened, only the belt and funeral veils were found inside. On the Mount of Olives, there is a Russian church, dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene. It was built by Emperor Alexander III. Within lies the relics of St. Elizabeth the Great Martyr and Nun Barbara. The miraculous image of the Mother of God “Gethsemane Hodegetria” also sits in there, this icon was presented in 1939 to the monastery by Metropolitan of the Mountains of Lebanon, Elijah, who was visited three times by St. Catherine, the Great Martyrs and Barbara, and said that the Mother of God demanded that the icon which represents her, should be given to Palestine and must remain there. The icon became famous in Lebanon for many miracles. The icon was completely black and darkened at the time but as soon as the icon was delivered in Gethsemane and the service was completed, the mortally sick priest of the monastery was healed the next day, and the icon was miraculously renewed.

Gethsemane is in East Jerusalem. Here, you’ll find the Garden of Gethsemane, which is now a small garden, the place of Jesus Christ’s praying on the detention night (Matthew 26: 36–57, Mark 14: 32–53, Luke 22: 39–53, John 18: 1–13). Eight very ancient olives grow here, the age of them according to some data exceeds two thousand years.

The significant route to any pilgrim in Jerusalem is Via Dolorosa (“Sorrowful way”), the street along which Jesus Christ walked into Golgotha. Here are nine of the fourteen stops of the Stations of the Cross, also known as Way of the Cross. (The last five stops are in the territory of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.)

JORDAN RIVER. Primarily, Jordan is linked with the preaching of John the Baptist and the Baptism of the Saviour. The place of the baptism of the Lord (Bethawar) is located opposite Jericho, it is where Saint John the Baptist taught and baptized people. This site shares a border with Jordan, and the entrance there is often closed. The immersion in the sacred waters of the Jordan is now in Galilee, in an equipped place, called Jardinite.

At the top of the Mount of Olives, there is the place of the Ascension of the Saviour on the 40th day after the Resurrection. In the 12th century, the Christian church was turned into a mosque. Now there is a small chapel inside which houses a stone upon which at the moment of the Ascension the imprint of the Saviour’s foot was left. Christian worship takes place here only during the feast of the Ascension. Nearby there is the Saviour-Ascension Monastery and a bell tower, called “Russian Candle” (it is the tallest building in Jerusalem!) To the right, from cathedral entrance there is a stone from the site where the Mother of God stood during the Ascension of Christ. Behind the Ascension church altar, there is a chapel, which is built on the site of the ancient church. Inside of the chapel, there is the place of the 1st and 2nd Findings of the head of John the Baptist.

JERICHO Jericho is one of the most ancient cities in the world. Here, there are places linked with the prophets Ilya and Elisha. The spring, which the prophet Elisha turned into drinkable water, has survived till now.

GUIDE TO THE HOLY LAND icon printed on the newsprint became famous by many healings. On the day of the Orthodox celebration of the Transfiguration of the Lord (August, 19), a cloud appears every year in the sky above Mount Tabor, even if the weather is clear. It descends to the Orthodox Church and covers both the Church and people, who are inside.

MONASTERIES OF THE JUDEAN DESERT

The modern Jericho road links Jerusalem with Jericho and follows the same route it did during the time of the Saviour. One of the most famous Gospel events is the meeting of the Lord with Zacchaeus, happened in Jericho, Zacchaeus was an extremely rich man, the head of tax collectors for the Romans. He was a sinner but driven by an inner desire for spiritual revival, he longed to see Christ, and therefore, climbed a tree knowing it was his best chance. The Lord passing by knew the turmoil in Zacchaeus soul and so said to him “Zacchaeus! Come down quickly, for today I must be at your house”. The tree of Zacchaeus, which he climbed, can be seen in the courtyard of the Greek Church dedicated to the prophet Elisha.

GALILEE Galilee is the most blooming and beautiful part of the Holy Land. The Lord gathered his followers, taught them and performed most of his miracles here. Apart from Judas Iscariot, who was from Judea, all the other apostles were Galileans. Nazareth is an Israeli city, and one of the most significant sacred places in Christianity. It is in Nazareth that Archangel Gabriel brought the good news to Virgin Mary, and Saviour lived here for 30 years before His entry into open service. Now in the place of the Saviour’s childhood home, stands the Catholic Church of the Annunciation, and on the water spring, where the Virgin Mary drew water from, there is the Orthodox Church of the Archangel Gabriel. The Cana of Galilee is the place where the Lord performed the first miracle, turning water into wine, and later healed the son of the courtier, saying to him: “Go, your son is healthy” (John 4: 46–54). The Orthodox Church was consecrated in 1886 in honour of George the Victorious, the Great Martyr, and it was built on the means of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society. Here there are two stone water-carriers from that time. To the right from the Church entrance, there is a stone, which has been brought from Abkhazia from the place of the Martyr death of the Apostle Simon. Mount Tabor. For now, on the top of Tabor, there are two monasteries: Orthodox and Catholic. The Orthodox one was renewed here in the XIX century by Archimandrite Irinarkh, who is a follower of the Monk Paisius Velichkovsky. In the Church, under the glass window there is a stone from the very top of the mountain, on which, according to the legend, the Lord stood during the Transfiguration. Also, there is the miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin “The Unfading Flower” in here. This simple

The Monastery of Temptation is an Orthodox Greek friary, which is on a mountain at the edge of Jericho. It is the place of the temptation of Jesus Christ by the Devil. The main relics of the monastery are; a cave where, according to the legend, Christ prayed, and the stone, on which the Lord sat. For the past 30 years, only an elderly monk, alongside his assistant have lodged in the monastery. The mountain is a real challenge for the cenobites who come here, because of challenges in climbing the mountain.

Mount Tabor is a 600-meter-high mountain, which is visible for many miles and is marked in history as the node of many significant sacred history events and above all, by the fact that it is atop of the mountain that the transfiguration of the Lord occurred.

Between the 4th‑7th centuries in the Holy Land, there were dozens of monasteries with thousands of monks. These are the abodes of the Sts. Euthymius the Great, Theodosius the Great, Sabbas the Sanctified. St. Sabbas the Sanctified Orthodox Monastery exists to this day in perfect condition and structurally intact, it is in the Judean Desert on the slope of the Kidron stream dating back to the 5th century. Among those who lived in the monastery, are dozens of glorified saints (John Damascene, Andrew of Crete, etc.), and not excluding the Martyrs who suffered during the Muslim raids. The main shrine of the monastery holds the relics of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. Nearby, there is the abode of Theodosius the Great. Monastery of St. George of Choziba is in the valley of Wadi Qelt. It was once all green, but now it is hard to tell, looking at the stern bare rocks. The abode is next to the cave in which the Prophet Elijah lurked for three years and six months, eating the food that was brought to him by ravens. In the middle of the 20th century, an amazing ascetic, Venerable John the Romanian (1913– 1960), worked in the monastery. His relics and clothing are imperishable and now rest in one of the monastery churches, in a glass shrine. Monastery of St. Gerasimus of Jordan was founded by St. Gerasimus in the 5th century. His life remarkably stands out due to the story about curing a lion, who then served the saint humbly all his life. On the icons of the monastery, the Venerable Gerasimus is depicted with the lion. In this monastery, the Venerable Zosima also worked and met the Venerable Maria of Egypt in the desert. On the left of the monastery entrance there is a small cave temple, in which the relics of the Martyrs and the miraculous fresco-icon of the Mother of God, The Nursing Madonna rest. According to legend, in this cave, the Holy Family lived here for a while, on the way to Egypt. The city of Lidda is the homeland of St. George the Victorious. St. George was a Roman warrior and he suffered in Nicomedia at the beginning of the 4th century. His relics were brought to his homeland, Lydda. His tomb is in the crypt of the Arab Orthodox Church.

FIGHTING BREAST CANCER Behind skin cancer, breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in women. Though it can attack both sexes, it is much more common in women, and while it is calculated that 1 in every 1000 men may have breast cancer, 1 out of every 8 women is projected to develop one form of invasive breast cancer in her lifetime.

ile this paints a horror picture for women, h recent years have seen an increase in the survival rates of breast cancer patients. A widespread and substantial support, awareness and research have seen the death rate of breast cancer decrease at a steady pace while new forms of treatment and more personalised forms of treatment are making it easier to handle the disease. Early detection also plays a huge role and goes a long way in making treatment more effective and successful.

Without wishing the fear and worry that breast cancer ushers into people’s lives, the statistics of 1 out of every 8 women developing the ail, and that 85% of women with breast cancer have no prior family history of the disease, makes it necessary to address healthy women, and more than anything, create an awareness and an assurance that breast cancer, while it may be a very real danger, is no longer the great unknown and life ending disease it was a couple of years ago.

THE STORIES

It should come as no surprise that as the death rate of breast cancer decreases, so too have the survivor stories increased. These inspirational stories by courageous, strong and beautiful women, show how much control we, you, can wield over the situations of life. All the stories share similar final messages, and one, in particular, stands out; The fight and victory over breast cancerstart with you. Beth Carlock, now 36, remembers the dreaded day of December 15, 2015, when her identical twin Sarah was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, breast cancer that affects the milk ducts. Recounting the whole process from discovery, to fight, and victory, Beth recalls the strength of her sister, during radiation, chemotherapy, losing her job, then a double mastectomy, and finally reconstruction surgeries on her breasts. Being twins, and sharing identical DNA meant that Beth was also in very great risk, and feeding off her sister’s strength and courage, she decided to undergo a hysterectomy, to reduce her hormone production, and the risk of breast cancer. Sarah is now cancer-free and moving on with life.

A STORY OF COURAGE, STRENGTH, AND FAITH FOR WOMEN Bernan Shaw was also just 33 in 2007 when she discovered tumours in her breasts. Opting instead for radiation, all seemed finished, until two years on, when she was again diagnosed with now stage four breast cancer, with a few months to live, and all this just two weeks before her wedding. Shaw refused to let cancer or the diagnosis define her life, and she set out to face her challenge head-on. Its been almost 10 years today since the doctors gave her just nine months to live, she is now cancer-free, and based her survival to three pillars; prayer, positive affirmation, and adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate and is no respecter of persons, yet the response to it is the same, courage and strength, even for the stars.

Actress Angelina Jolie decided to undergo a double mastectomy, at the age of 37, when she discovered that she had a high chance of developing breast cancer. These are only a few stories, but they are evident that breast cancer cuts across every social sphere and circle, and has the same terrifying effects, but all the survivors have determination, strength, courage, and resilience in common, they didn’t let cancer defeat them

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

Normal and the little everyday things such as watching your weight, limiting consumption of alcohol, exercising regularly, not smoking, will go a long way to reducing a person’s risk of developing breast cancer.

BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 are genes that produce tumor-suppressing proteins in the human body. A mutation or anomaly in these genes most likely means the person is most likely going to develop cancer. Nowadays, tests can be carried out to know if these genes are mutated or not, so asto determine the amount of risk an individual is exposed to, and it can also help know whether it is a genetic issue, that is passed on, so you can take precautions for your children, or be rest assured they are safe.

The fear of cancer is one of the biggest things that destroys the human immune system and resistance when they are initially diagnosed. There will be a moment of pain, fear, and doubt, but it should be followed by resolve and a determined attitude because breast cancer is no longer the fatal disease it once was. After diagnosis, the individual can decide to take an Oncology DNA test. This relatively new development does an analysis of an individual’s genetic composition and the results help doctors to know what treatment will be best for you and your system.

HOW DO FOREIGNERS FIND LIFE IN LONDON? OUR REPORTER, AMRITA BOSWAN, HAS SHARED HER EXPERIENCES ON THE CAPITAL OF "MISTY ALBION".

…D REAMS COME TRUE! WELCOMED OR STRANGERS...??? – Did you come to London from Cyprus? What was the first difference you felt? – London, by itself, is a unique city, almost a State of its own, with 70% population represented by foreigners. Any ethnic group or nationality you can imagine will most likely be in London. People, however, treat each other with greater respect than in Cyprus. For example, think of the traffic lights turning green and you are caught in the thick of it, with motorists signalling you from behind. Well, that’s not the case in London, or at least speaking for myself, I am yet to experience any form of 40

vulgar or anti-social behaviour, like the kind I see in Cyprus. There are, however, some Brits who dislike London, complaining that all the bad people have left the villages for London. Foremost, I was amazed by the architecture and the tidiness of the place, the City is green with huge parks in almost every area. London is home to the biggest park in England, Richmond Park, where one can see free-walking deer, foxes, and even wolves! People cycle there, family life looks thrilling and exciting, with moms and dads with their children of all ages all cycling, wearing helmets and followed by the family

pet, which will most likely be a dog, or a father pulling a baby-cart attached to the bike behind him with a new-born. The core of British culture is the family. My positive opinion of London is based on me living in the centre of it, in one of the affluent areas of the city — Kensington and Chelsea. It is popular with Russians, Arabs, and the people who love comfort, beauty and clean areas. It is surrounded by parks — Holland Park, Hyde Park, Green Park, dotted with flowers and neatly cut lawns. Posh areas are almost totally free of crime as the city is filled with CCTV and the police are always on guard. The police in England

LONDON is my secret love, they are "sweeties" with a brutish appearance complemented with friendly and smiley attitude, always politely answering questions with a hint of that famous English humour. London, however, has its bad neighbourhoods which are dirt, filthy and even dangerous. All sorts people live there, including migrants. London is a small global village with Spanish, Italians, Romanians, Polish, Greeks, and Lithuanians, etc. Every nation of Europe is most probably represented. Being from less developed countries or just by their status as migrants, social benefits are paid to most of these foreigners per British law, and they live in plain luxury, sometimes even more than the Brits. Even the wealthy areas have 'social flats' — cheap apartments, which Council provides to people on low-income. They pay only 20%-25% of the rent, the rest is subsidised by the government. Their salaries are lower, but as a rule of law, they work for the civil service.

PROPERTY – In comparison to Cyprus, how big is the difference in property prices? – The difference is "cosmic"! Prices in London do not fall, on the contrary, they rise and do vary across England. For instance, in Kent, closer to the English Channel, which connects Great Britain with France, everything is much cheaper, both living accommodations and properties. A one-bedroom flat for a family of three can be rented for £500–600 a month, but in London, this is an insufficient sum for a dwelling of any kind. We live in a two-bedroom flat, 75 square meters, without a veranda but in a good area and pay £450 weekly. Rent payment in London is calculated on weekly basis and not the usual monthly cut. We have also faced moments were money in your account didn't guarantee a house to rent, especially if you're unemployed, you must provide a regular payslip or an advance deposit worth 6 months of rent. Local authority charges are paid separately for each area (for instance, we pay £110 a month), there is also a TV license which is paid annually, electricity and gas are cheaper here than in Cyprus (£80 for two months on gas and £50 for electricity). Everything is processed by an agency. You can still write an advert in the local newspaper or internet sites where people self-promote themselves (for example zoopla.co.uk) but there are a lot of 'cat in the bag' proposals, where lovely photos and captivating headlines and ads are published

but then upon inquiry, you discover that the flat is either unavailable or you are offered something different and less than what was advertised. That is the game of estate agents, but it is a market, and advertising is the driver of the trade. Out of experience and monopoly, they never get over-excited about clients, for example, when we were searching for a flat, no one paid any attention to us because we had an elementary budget according to London standards (£2000 pounds a month). The City is huge and loud. Unlike Cyprus, where you need 15 minutes to see the whole of Limassol, you'll need quite a bit of time to cover the great distance of London, with numerous beds areas in the old city without lifts. You will manage to check on only 2–3 flats a day. The parking is a killer, a very expensive affair, averaging £6–9 p/h in the centre, and that is if you are lucky to find one. So, get in shape, because walking may well become inevitable at some point. A monthly parking fee (£60–80 p/m), grants you the right to park for free in your area. Car parks are chargeable from 8:30 am till 6:30 pm but in the evenings and on weekends, parking is free. In Central London, where all monuments, museums, and landmarks are, you have to pay an entry fee of £11 from 9 am to 8 pm on weekdays. It is much faster to move by underground. For travelling purposes, you will be issued an Oyster Card, which you top up every time and scan at the various entrances and exits of underground or a bus; the cost of the journey depends on the distance travelled and the number of journeys you make. It was introduced as a measure to curb traffic in the city and to free the main roads. Oyster cards are a must when using the underground. Insurance is very expensive, especially for 'newcomers' just entering the country. For instance, we pay £1500 for car insurance annually. Though initially expensive, avoiding an accident in your first year means the initial price drops by two-thirds and all you'll have to pay subsequently is £500.

I have met with people, who are independent estate agents like I am, and we communicate, exchange information, share the news, etc. There are a few places where all estate-agents meet and socialise — estate-agents bar or pub, so to speak. From an administration point of view, English system operates just fine. If you want to work, and you are capable you just have to operate according to the law and everything will be fine, the sky will be your limit. Everything is explicitly explained and detailed, making for a well-oiled machine that runs smoothly. You are issued with a number, you have allocated time and don't wait in queues. They value the time, both theirs and yours but everything must be "by the book" and taxes most definitely must be paid.

THE WORK – Were you able to find employment in London? – I operate in the property market here, same as in Cyprus, but it most certainly isn't easy. I lived 10 years in Cyprus and everybody got to know me within that period of time but I am an outsider here and nobody seems to trust me, yet. I also have to be very cautious when dealing with people because the London Property Market is male-dominated, with the top positions occupied by men who are young, active and very ambitious: they will "break your spine and won't ask your name" in a very gentle way. 41

LONDON WAGES – What is the acceptable wage-rate in London, to live an ok life? – Minimum wage in London is £9.15 p/h, and the minimum wage across the rest of UK is £7.83 p/h but these are for lowskilled workers; waiters, retailers, service personnel, specialist services cost more. Case in point; my washing machine broke down and the fridge was acting up, so I called an engineer. here, they charge separately for the first 20 minutes and additionally for the call (around £60) so, if an engineer stays longer than 20 minutes, then every additional 20 minutes would rate at £30. In the end, he fixed my fridge, opened my washing machine then closed it saying "That’s not my speciality, call the plumber" yet charged me for both the washing machine and the fridge, £120. When I asked, "Why is it so?" And he promptly replied "have opened it, so I worked on it" The epic story follows; The plumber arrives, charged separately for the call again and spends the next 4 hours fixing the washing machine overflow. Basically overcharged us, and after a month and a half, the sewers got blocked and we had to call him again. That’s how people make their money… A lot of young people come to London, first, to study, then search for work, accepting minimum wage as they start their careers. You will never be proposed a good salary unless you are a high-grade specialist. First, you are offered a small salary and then a raise as your experience and tenure increases, and be rest assured you will get a raise, they reward hard work. One of my friends started off with £1500 in her bank account, she now earns £5000.

From an administration point of view, English system operates just fine. If you want to work, and you are capable you just have to operate according to the law and everything will be fine, the sky will be your limit. However, with a wage increase comes tax increase as well, my friend's husband is earning around £12000 a month with almost 40% shaved off by taxes as he hits the high-earners threshold, and his family is not eligible to claim any state-benefits except for free healthcare. If you are employed, you can apply for credit to purchase a property, paying a deposit of 5% off the total! and if this is your first home, there are further discounts such as credit APR of 0.5% to 2–2.5%.

ABOUT PRICES AND SHOPS I am more of a spender, but in my first two months, I had to save on everything. When you start earning in pounds, your take on everything changes, you gradually start getting used to cucumbers and tomatoes costing £6 — and that is the standard price. If you are shopping in supermarkets like Tesco or Sainsbury — (equivalents of our Carrefour and Lidl) then it is cheaper. Delicious and relatively cheap local lamb, ham, poultry and fish (Scottish Salmond) can also be found easily. There are street stall markets here, which sell organic products from the farms and can be expensive. There are also chains of stores like "Whole Foods" which sell only organic products of good quality, but their prices 42

are three times above what you'll find in the supermarkets, we only go there on big occasions. There are also daily markets which the British love and always visit with great enthusiasm, the pleasure of buying from "grannies" in the market, rather than from the shop. Living out of the city — one may find numerous beautiful villages, well preserved, quiet, verdant, with local farms surrounded by forests and prices there are tolerable but London, especially its central parts is very extremely expensive! Many British are unhappy with the government because of the high prices and taxes, and to this effect, we see protesters quite often. Residents of Central London are demanding wage hikes by 4–5 times the current amount and the building of social housing for local low-earners because even most native Londoners can't afford to buy a flat. Estate Agencies here only look out for property owners and those who are willing to buy are very small in number.

LEISURE If you have free time you can find lots of things to do, and things you'll love too. Almost all museums are free and open all day long from 9 am till 7 pm, and you can find paid events almost everywhere and every day, music festivals, jazz fringes, etc.

LONDON You can find anything in London, anything your heart desires, just have to look for it. London is just as the village as Cyprus but divided into districts. Walks in the park are bliss and it is granted you'll meet polite strangers, everything is right before your eyes, little shops, restaurants… We have a bar close to our home, I visit there sometimes to have a glass of wine and chat with neighbours. What's impressive, you can talk to a man without feeling lured into something like: "Hey beautiful, jump into my ride", the men are very civil and friendly, usually without expectations or obligations. I want to highlight Cyprus' London Diaspora, the whole district called Southgate. Being there is like being back home in Cyprus; over-hanging sign VoS, "Vilton" bakery, kebab shop, barber store "Kostas'", Pizza Hut, etc. The Cypriot dialect can be heard everywhere, and it made me feel right back in Cyprus again.

Another pride of Ayia Napa is a monastery from the 16th century, built in the honour of Virgin Mary dating back to the era of Venetian rule in about AD1500. The monastery is also famous for its marble fountain and a chapel of the Latins. Since 1978 it functions as a conference centre proudly serving the churches of Cyprus and the Middle East.

Once upon a time, Ayia Napa was a small fishing village laid among hills near the cape of Kapo Greko. Its inhabitants jealously guarded their traditions and heritage, staying, in the shadow of one of the most popular resort areas of the Mediterranean — the Famagusta district. Since Turkish occupation of Famagusta in 1974, the once beautiful and brisk city became a ghost town. Later, when life on the island improved, the travel agencies turned their attention to the small village — Ayia Napa. Its pristine white beaches and calm, relaxing atmosphere preserved for centuries was all of a sudden the primary attraction for tourists. Ayia Napa mainly attracts young people. The original wreckage of this ship can stands in Kyrenia in the museum of ships.

Unlike the closest neighbours of Ayia Napa and Protaras, life in Paralimni does not stop in the winter, it is bubbly all year round. Here you can find lots of shopping centres, fashionable restaurants as well as boutiques. So, if you came to rest in Ayia Napa or in Protaras and still plan to do shopping, then Paralimni is the best place for you to visit. Not far from Paralimni is the village Dérigne.This village is most famous for its strawberry festival. Despite its small size, there are several historical and religious heritages such as St. George’s Church which was built in the 17th century, St. Mary’s Church of the 15th century and the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary built in the 17th century. Also, there is a local Museum of Folklore. It is located in an old town and represents the economy and life of the Cypriots. Those who are interested in the modern history and political life of the island can visit the cultural centre in Ammochostos (Famagusta). At the top of the observation deck, there is a pair of binoculars through which you can see the whole of the Famagusta district and even the abandoned district of Varosha.

Once upon a time, all its walls were decorated with frescoes, but unfortunately, only small fragments remain to this day. The church is a national heritage and attracts a lot of tourists worldwide.

УЩЕЛЬЕ АВАКАС Ущелье Авакас — одно из красивейших мест острова, мало посещаемых «классическими» отдыхающими. Однако если вам по душе яркие впечатления, движение и преодоление препятствий, загадки природы и редкие растения, то Авакас — именно то, что вам нужно!

то ущелье — поистине рай для любителей походов. Именно здесь вас ждут захватывающие дух виды и бесконечное разнообразие местной флоры и фауны, включая исчезающий centauria akamantis — растение-эндемик с фиолетовыми цветами, которое растет только в этом ущелье. Узнать его вы сможете по табличке, ведь в этом заповеднике все редкие растения отмечены специальными знаками. Будто высеченное из известкового камня, ущелье поднимается на высоту до 30 метров и резко сужается кверху, так что преодолеть его непросто! Пешеходная тропа здесь вьется вдоль реки, которая и сформировала это природное чудо много 50

сотен лет назад. В сезон дождей она может превратиться в бурный поток. Однако пусть вас это не пугает, ведь в ущелье проложен специальный пешеходный маршрут, разработанный Лесным департаментом Министерства сельского хозяйства, природных ресурсов и окружающей среды Кипра. Протяженность оборудованной тропы — 3 км, однако на свой риск можно пройти дальше. Особо любопытным туристам придется пробираться вглубь, в некоторых местах карабкаться по камням, перелезать через поваленные деревья. Входя в ущелье, вы сразу оказываетесь в природном коридоре из скал и далее идете вглубь по сужающемуся проходу. В некоторых местах скалы нависают прямо

над головой. Это зрелище немного пугает, но завораживает своей красотой. Именно Авакас является одной из основных тем открыток, которые туристы привозят на память с Кипра. В богатом растительностью ущелье кроме прочих деревьев растут сосны, кипарисы, можжевельник, дикие фиговые деревья, папоротники и дубы, и, конечно же, здесь изобилие диких цветов. Животный мир представлен лисами, зайцами, соколами, воронами, ночными совами, рептилиями и забавными дикими горными козами, которых — если не вблизи, то на высоких скалах вверху — вы точно увидите!

И все же не все красоты и тайны ущелья нам доступны. Одно из самых удивительных и таинственных мест Авакаса для отдыхающих закрыто, а пройти туда без специального разрешения и снаряжения невозможно. Несколько лет назад местные пастухи обнаружили дверь в одной из скал. Ученые еще не до конца исследовали это место. На данный момент известно, что вниз под землю ведет узкий лаз, а далее, на глубине 70 метров, были обнаружены древние катакомбы, представляющие собой проходы, галереи, подземные залы, образуюшие огромный лабиринт. Загадочное подземелье до конца не изучено, но в нем уже были найдены наконечники стрел и глиняная посуда. Ущелье Авакас — настоящая жемчужина Кипра. И хотя посвятить его исследованию вам придется почти целый день, вы никогда об этом не пожалеете, ведь остров откроется вам с новой, неожиданной стороны! 51

Споры о легендарном острове Атлантида, на котором располагался город атлантов, не умолкают вот уже два тысячелетия — с тех пор, как великий Платон рассказал о нeм в своих диалогах «Тимей» и «Критий».

том, где находилась Атлантида и где искать то, что от неe могло остаться, гадают до сих пор. Атлантиду ищут в Атлантике возле Марокко, в Андах, в Бразилии, в Ирландии, в Румынии и даже в Антарктиде! Многие исследователи искали Атлантиду в районе Балеарских и Канарских островов. Один из исследователей выдвинул версию, что Атлантида располагалась на месте нынешних Британских островов и Ирландии, а утонула в результате таяния ледников. Знаменитому подводному исследователю Жаку-Иву Кусто почти удалось доказать, что найденные на дне Средиземного моря остатки минойской цивилизации принадлежат именно погибшей Атлантиде. Исследователь Роберт Сармаст обнаружил под водой в 11 км от Кипра прямоугольный пласт земли, простирающийся к северо-востоку в сторону Сирии. Он утверждает, что именно остров Кипр был вершиной холма и частью Атлантиды. Почему Роберт Сармаст решил искать Атлантиду на Кипре? Можно заметить, что, прежде всего, описание Атлантиды напоминает

Многие исследователи считают, что острова Средиземного моря — это осколки затонувшей цивилизации. В качестве примера приводят и высокоразвитую критскую цивилизацию, тоже погибшую внезапно при сильнейшем землетрясении. Что было известно об Атлантиде Платону? В своих диалогах он сообщает, что Атлантида исчезла в течение одного дня и одной трагической ночи — «за одни ужасные сутки». Приступая к описанию Атлантиды, Платон предупреждает, что название самого острова, как и все другие имена в его рассказе, не подлинные, а переведенные на греческий язык. Египтяне, которые первыми писали историю Атлантиды, перевели аланские имена на свой лад. Солон (афинский политик, законодатель и один из «семи мудрецов» Древней Греции), который и сообщил Платону сведения об этом острове, не видел надобности сохранять египетские названия и перевел их на греческий язык. А сама история острова, по легенде, начинается с рассказа о разделе Земли между тремя богамибратьями: Зевсом, Аидом и Посейдоном. Посейдону, ставшему повелителем морей, по жребию и достался остров Атлантида, на котором тогда жили только три смертных человека — «один из мужей по имени Евнор, в самом начале произведeнный на свет Землею, с женой Ливкиппой и их дочерью — красавицей Клейто». Посейдон влюбился в Клейто, она стала его супругой и родила пять пар близнецов — первых десятерых царей Атлантиды. Как заботливый отец, Посейдон для защиты обнeс остров тремя водными и двумя сухопутными кольцами, атланты же перекинули через эти кольца мосты и прорыли каналы, так что корабли могли по ним подплывать к самому городу или, точнее, к центральному острову,

имевшему 5 стадиев (немногим менее километра) в диаметре. Также, по преданию, он источил из земли тeплый и холодный родники с удивительной на вкус и целительной по силе водой, а плодородная земля давала разнообразное и достаточное для жизни пропитание. На острове Посейдон соорудил для Клейто и себя храмы, украшенные серебром и золотом и окружeнные золотыми статуями, а также роскошный царский дворец. Полагают, что остров Атлантида находился на значительном возвышении над уровнем моря, а берег был обрывистым и высоким. Кругом столицы простиралась равнина, окруженная горами, доходившими до моря. Об этой равнине ходили сказания как о самом красивом и плодородном месте на земле. Она была густо усеяна селениями, разделенными озерами, реками, лугами, где паслось множество диких и домашних животных. В диалоге Платона «Тимей» афинский политический деятель Критий повествует о войне Афин с Атлантидой, якобы со слов своего деда Крития-старшего, которому, в свою очередь, пересказал историю Солон, услышавший ее от жрецов в Египте. Суть рассказа такова: в те времена, когда Афины были наиболее славным, могущественным и добродетельным государством, главным их соперником была упомянутая Атлантида. На острове возникло удивительное по величине и могуществу царство, владевшее всей Ливией до Египта и Европой до Тиррении (запад Италии). Все силы этого царства были брошены на порабощение Афин. Вскоре, однако, произошло грандиозное разрушительное землетрясение, за которым последовали сильнейшие наводнения, в результате которых остров был поглощен морем в один день вместе со своими жителями — атлантами. Платон указывает время катастрофы как «9 000 лет назад», то есть около 9500 г. до н. э. Есть ли шансы найти Атлантиду, погибшую примерно 12 тысяч лет тому назад? Дальше всe по расписанию — банк, магазин…Срочные дела по работе: пара-тройка электронных писем, звонки, презентации. Дальше — проведать бабушку в больнице. У мужа на работе вечеринка. Дети смотрят мультики. Тихий вечер в одиночестве. Но почему-то не получается им как следует насладиться. Много беготни, устала, одиноко… Часто так бывает, что очень сложно вырваться из круга привычной рутины. День проходит за днем, дела и события пролетают, похожие друг на друга. Оглядываешься назад — нечего вспомнить. Какая-то серая масса времени. Где взять силы разорвать этот порочный круг? Как осмелиться на перемены? Почему день прошел, а ничего важного так и не произошло? Сегодня, завтра, послезавтра… Кто я? Где моя жизнь? Где мое счастье? Кто виноват, что дети уже выросли, а оно — все еще «за горами»? Во-первых, «в заполненный кувшин чистой воды не нальешь», а мы все живем в потоке собственных иллюзий, страхов, обид на ближних и дальних, претензий и самокритики. Нам бы подумать, поплакать, простить всех и начать все заново, а вы говорите: «Творчество»… Во-вторых, мы все страшно напуганы, еще с детства. Как бы ни пришел кто-то взрослый и мудрый и не отругал нас. Ведь если я начнутаки слушать свое сердце и что-то менять в своей жизни, то кому-то это может не понравиться! Страх лежит в основе практически любой негативной эмоции, он обладает суживающим сознание эффектом, в таком состоянии очень сложно дышать, не то, что творить! У нас крепко-накрепко засело: «У тебя нет ни слуха, ни голоса! Делай, что хочешь, только не пой!» Нам сложно признаться, что эти слова и по сей день много для нас значат. В-третьих, в творчестве, как и в любви, невозможно оставаться неуязвимым. Вот вы нарисовали, к примеру, картину, подруга увидела и говорит: «На что ты время свое тратишь!» На подобных суждениях мы строим свою самооценку. Важно помнить, что мы всегда творим из нашего уязвленного ребенка внутри нас. Это нежное существо обладает огромной силой. Но для этого надо уметь защитить его от множества «камней», летящих в его «огород». В-четвертых, мы сами в себя не верим! Мы твердим сами себе: хорошо рассуждать тем, кому 21, вся жизнь впереди! А если мне уже за 30, 40, 50..? Я уж как-нибудь доберусь до финиша «по суше». На самом деле нам непросто признаться, насколько мы привя-

заны к тому, что имеем: комфорту, партнеру, окружению. Нам страшно, что если мы вдруг услышим и твердо поверим в желания нашего сердца, то нам непременно придется сделать решительный шаг в новую жизнь, отказавшись от «некачественного сопровождения». И, наконец, мы, по своей природе обладаем огромным потенциалом, но в противовес этому мы развили такое же по масштабам чувство лени. Сложно выбирать то, что само не приходит на ум, не сулит мгновенного наслаждения уму и телу. Творчество — всегда высшая альтернатива нашего с вами каждодневного выбора. Это совсем несложно, но для начала нам надо этого захотеть. И наши жизненные трудности почти всегда становятся нашим благословением. Не надо бояться исследовать себя и собственные рамки представлений о себе и о жизни. Только тогда наш личностный рост будет продолжаться, жизнь будет по-настоящему приносить удовольствие, а глаза — блестеть! Не стоит страшиться крушения того, что поддерживает в нас иллюзию вечности, неуязвимости, собственного бесстрашия и объективности. Все это лишает нас дыхания жизни, радости вдохновения, искренней теплоты от близости с любимыми. И тогда в один момент мы, может быть, не будем бояться одиночества, а будем находить в нем целительную силу, не будем винить себя за слабость, а станем рассматривать ее, как неотъемлемую часть нашей способности чувствовать и любить. Вдохновение неминуемо придет и в вашу жизнь. Важно лишь осознать, что «творчество — это нормально и естественно. СВЯТЫЕ МЕСТА ИЗРАИЛЯ И ПАЛЕСТИНЫ

Каждому православному христианину нужно побывать на Святой Земле, поклониться ее святыням, провести здесь в молитве хотя бы несколько дней. Это земля богоизбранная, место земной жизни Господа Иисуса Христа, Божией Матери, святых пророков, апостолов и мучеников за веру. Святыни этой земли можно перечислять бесконечно, потому что каждая ее пядь хранит великую святую историю. Мы же попробуем рассказать о самых значимых местах, которые стоит посетить!

ПУТЕВОДИТЕЛЬ по Святой Земле ХРАМ РОЖДЕСТВА ХРИСТОВА, несмотря на многочисленные набеги, не был разрушен и считается наиболее хорошо сохранившимся храмом в Палестине.

ВИФЛЕЕМ Храм Рождества Христова в Вифлееме — одна из двух самых великих святынь христианского мира. Он построен на том самом месте, где родился Спаситель мира. Храм над пещерой Рождества начала строить святая царица Елена в 330 году, а закончил в 6 веке император Юстиниан. Святой Вертеп Рождества — подземный храм базилики 12 м длиной и 4 м шириной. Под престолом находится Звезда, по кругу которой написано: «Здесь от Девы Марии родился Иисус Христос».

ИЕРУСАЛИМ Несомненно, сердцем Святой Земли является Иерусалим. Именно здесь находятся главные святыни всего христианского мира. Здесь совершился искупительный подвиг Христа Спасителя. С этим городом связано множество пророчеств и обетований Ветхого и Нового Заветов.

Первое, что стремится сделать каждый паломник, прибывший на Святую Землю — поклониться главной святыне христианского мира — Гробу Господню. На территории Храма Гроба Господня расположено несколько действующих монастырей. Храм разделен между шестью конфессиями христианской церкви, каждой из которых выделены свои приделы и часы для молитв. Во времена Христа это место находилось за пределами города. После разрушения Иерусалима римлянами здесь были построены языческие капища.

ХРАМ ГРОБА ГОСПОДНЯ — это огромный архитектурный комплекс, включающий Голгофу с местом Распятия, Кувуклию с Гробом Спасителя, Кафоликон (соборный храм), подземный храм Обретения Животворящего Креста, храм святой равноапостольной Елены и несколько других приделов. 61

И только в IV веке, в годы правления святого императора Константина, когда гонения на христиан прекратились, святая равноапостольная царица Елена, разрушив капища идолопоклонников, нашла Святой Гроб Господень, место распятия Спасителя, обрела древо Животворящего Креста. Возведение храма в честь Воскресения Христова продолжалось 10 лет. При входе в Храм находится Камень Помазания, на который было положено тело Спасителя. Под Голгофой находится придел Адама, который, по преданию, был здесь погребен. За стеклом видна скала с образовавшейся в ней расселиной. Раскол в скале произошел в час Крестной смерти Спасителя. Видно, что скала расколота против биологических слоев. Перед Гробом Господним — придел Ангела, где сидел ангел, возвестивший о воскресении. Эйн Карем — западная окраина Иерусалима. С этим местом связаны два важных события: рождение Иоанна Крестителя и встреча Девы Марии с Елизаветой, матерью Иоанна Крестителя, после Благовещения. В Эйн Кареме расположен русский Горненский женский монастырь, основанный в 1871 году. Севернее Гефсиманского сада находится православная церковь Успения с гробницей Богородицы, построенная в 12 веке на месте, где в 326 году св. Елена воздвигла первую церковь. Здесь также находятся гробницы родителей Богородицы Иоакима и Анны и Иосифа Обручника. В самой нижней части храма стоит гробница, в которой апостолы похоронили Деву Марию. Она в теле была взята на небо, поэтому после вскрытия гробницы в ней были найдены только пояс и погребальные пелены. На Елеоне стоит русский храм, посвященный св. Марии Магдалине. Он построен императором Александром III. Здесь находятся мощи препмч. Елизаветы и инокини Варвары. Также здесь находится чудотворный образ Божией Матери «Гефсиманская Одигитрия». Эту икону в 1939 году подарил обители митрополит Гор Ливанских Илия, которому трижды являлись святые великомученицы Екатерина и Варвара и говорили, что Матерь Божия просит отдать Ее икону в Палестину и что там она должна оставаться. В Ливане икона прославилась многими чудесами. Икона была совершенно черной и потемневшей от времени. Как только икона прибыла в Гефсиманию и отслужили молебен, исцелился смертельно больной священник обители, а на следующий день икона чудесным образом обновилась.

ГЕФСИМАНИЯ. Здесь расположен Гефсиманский сад — в настоящее время небольшой сад, место моления Иисуса Христа в ночь ареста (Мф. 26:36–57; Мк. 14:32–53; Лк. 22:39–53; Ин. 18:1– 13). Здесь растут восемь очень древних олив, возраст которых, по некоторым данным, превышает 2000 лет.

ВИА ДОЛОРОСА («ПУТЬ СКОРБИ») — улица, по которой шел Иисус Христос к Голгофе. Здесь находятся 9 из 14 остановок Крестного пути Христа. (Последние пять остановок находятся на территории Храма Гроба Господня.).

РЕКА ИОРДАН Главным образом, Иордан связан с проповедью Иоанна Крестителя и с Крещением Спасителя. Место Крещения Господня — Вифавар — находится напротив Иерихона. Здесь учил и крестил народ святой Иоанн Предтеча. Это место является пограничной зоной с Иорданией, вход туда часто закрыт. Погружаются в священные воды Иордана сейчас в Галилее — в специально оборудованном для этого месте, называемом Иарденит. 62

На вершине Елеона находится место Вознесения Спасителя в 40-й день после Воскресения. В 12 веке христианский храм превратили в мечеть. Сейчас здесь небольшая часовня, внутри которой находится камень, на котором в момент Вознесения остался отпечаток стопы Спасителя. Христианское богослужение здесь совершается только на праздник Вознесения Господня. Неподалеку стоит Спасо-Вознесенский монастырь и колокольня «Русская свеча» (самое высокое сооружение в Иерусалиме!) Справа от входа в собор — камень с того места, на котором стояла Божия Матерь во время Вознесения Христова. За алтарем Вознесенского храма — часовня, построенная на месте древней церкви. Внутри часовни — место 1-го и 2-го Обретения главы Иоанна Предтечи.

ИЕРИХОН Иерихон — один из самых древних городов мира. Здесь есть места, связанные с пророками Ильей и Елисеем. Источник, воды которого сделал пригодными для питья пророк Елисей, сохранился и поныне.

СВЯТЫЕ МЕСТА ИЗРАИЛЯ И ПАЛЕСТИНЫ бумаге икона прославилась многими исцелениями. В день православного празднования Преображения Господня (19 августа) каждый год на небе над горой Фавор даже в ясную погоду появляется облако. Оно спускается на православный храм, покрывая и храм, и людей, находящихся в нeм.

МОНАСТЫРИ ИУДЕЙСКОЙ ПУСТЫНИ

Современная Иерихонская дорога, соединяющая Иерусалим с Иерихоном, проходит по тому же пути, что и во времена Спасителя. Известное Евангельское событие — встреча Господа с Закхеем — произошло тоже в Иерихоне. Закхей был очень богатым человеком, начальником сборщиков налогов для римлян. Будучи грешником, но движимый внутренней потребностью в духовном возрождении, он настолько захотел увидеть Христа, что влез на дерево. Господь, проходя мимо знал, какой перелом произошел в душе Закхея и сказал ему: «Закхей! Сойди скорее, ибо сегодня мне надобно быть у тебя в доме». Дерево Закхея, на которое он влез, можно увидеть во дворе греческого храма, посвященного пророку Елисею.

ГАЛИЛЕЯ Галилея — самая цветущая и красивая часть Святой Земли. Здесь Господь собрал своих учеников, учил и совершил большинство чудес. Кроме Иуды Искариота, который был родом из Иудеи, все остальные апостолы были галилеянами. Израильский город Назарет — одна из самых значимых для христианства святынь. В Назарете Архангел Гавриил принeс благую весть Деве Марии, здесь Спаситель жил 30 лет до Своего вступления на открытое служение. Сейчас на месте дома детства Спасителя стоит католический храм Благовещения, а на источнике воды, из которого черпала воду Дева Мария, построен православный храм Архангела Гавриила. Кана Галилейская — место, где Господь сотворил первое чудо, претворив воду в вино, а позднее исцелил сына царедворца, сказав ему: «Иди, сын твой здоров» (Ин. 4:46–54). Православный храм, освященный в 1886 году в честь великомученика Георгия Победоносца, был построен на средства Императорского православного палестинского общества. Здесь хранят два каменных водоноса тех времен. Справа от входа в храм находится камень, привезенный из Абхазии с места мученической кончины апостола Симона. Гора Фавор. В настоящее время на вершине Фавора соседствуют два монастыря: православный и католический. Православная обитель была возобновлена здесь в XIX веке архимандритом Иринархом, учеником преподобного Паисия Величковского. В храме под стеклом находится камень с самой вершины горы, на котором, по преданию, стоял Господь во время Преображения. Также здесь находится чудотворный образ Пресвятой Богородицы «Неувядаемый цвет». Эта простая напечатанная на газетной

МОНАСТЫРЬ ИСКУШЕНИЯ — православный греческий мужской монастырь, расположен на горе на окраине Иерихона. Здесь место искушения Иисуса Христа дьяволом. Главные святыни монастыря — пещера, где по преданию молился Христос, и камень, на котором сидел Господь. В обители уже 30 лет живет единственный пожилой монах с помощником. Гора становится настоящим испытанием для приходящих сюда иноков. Подъем на гору крайне сложный.

ГОРА ФАВОР — 600-метровая гора, которая видна за многие мили и отмечена в истории как узловой пункт многих важных событий Священной истории. Прежде всего, тем, что на вершине этой горы произошло Преображение Господне.

В 4–7 веках на Святой Земле насчитывались десятки монастырей с тысячами монахов. Это обители святых Евфимия Великого, Феодосия Великого, Саввы Освященного. Лавра Саввы Освященного существует до сего дня без перерыва! Она стоит в Иудейской пустыне на склоне Кедронского потока с 5 века. Среди насельников обители десятки прославленных святых (Иоанн Дамаскин, Андрей Критский и др.), не считая мучеников, пострадавших при мусульманских набегах. Главная святыня обители — мощи преподобного Саввы Освященного. Недалеко от Лавры стоит до сего дня обитель Феодосия Великого. Монастырь преп. Георгия Хозевита стоит в ущелье Вади-Кельт. Когда-то здесь было много зелени, во что сейчас трудно поверить, взирая на суровые голые скалы. Обитель находится рядом с пещерой, в которой Пророк Илия скрывался три года и шесть месяцев, питаясь пищей, которую ему приносил ворон. В середине 20 века в обители подвизался удивительный подвижник — преподобный Иоанн Румын (1913–1960). Его мощи и одежда абсолютно нетленны. Сейчас они почивают в одном из монастырских храмов в стеклянной раке. Монастырь св. Герасима Иорданского — основан св. Герасимом в 5 веке. Житие его примечательно историей о том, как святой вылечил льва, который потом всю жизнь кротко служил ему. На иконах преподобного Герасима изображают со львом. В этой обители подвизался преподобный Зосима, встретивший в пустыне преподобную Марию Египетскую. При входе в монастырь слева расположен небольшой пещерный храм, в котором почивают мощи мучеников и чудотворная фреска-икона Божией Матери Млекопитательница. По преданию, в этой пещере жило Святой Семейство по пути в Египет. Город Лидда — родина Георгия Победоносца. Святой Георгий был римским воином и пострадал в Никомидии в начале 4 века. Мощи его перенесли на родину в Лидду. Гробница находится в крипте арабского православного храма.

Любые этнические группы, национальности, какие только можно себе представить, там есть! Но люди относятся друг к другу с большим уважением, чем, скажем, на Кипре. Допустим, на светофоре стоишь, зеленый свет только загорелся — тебе уже сзади сигналят. В Лондоне такого нет. По крайней мере, я пока ни разу не столкнулась с хамством или беспределом. 64

Хотя есть англичане, которые откровенно не любят именно Лондон: они говорят, что в английских деревнях нет плохих людей, потому что они все переехали — в Лондон! Конечно, в первую очередь, я была поражена архитектурой и чистотой. Город очень зеленый — огромные парки практически во всех районах. В самом большом парке Англии Richmond Park гуляют олени, водятся лисы и волки. Люди ездят туда на велосипедах. Смотришь: папа, мама и трое ребятишек мал мала меньше! И все на велосипедиках, в касках, еще и собака бежит следом. Или папа тянет за собой тележку с люлькой, в которой лежит младенец. Вот такие они англичане, семейные!

Конечно, мое позитивное мнение о Лондоне во многом связано с тем, что мы живем в центре, в одном из самых благополучных районов — Кенcингтон и Челси (Kensington and Chelsea). Он популярен среди русских, арабов, людей, которые любят комфорт, красоту и чистоту. Вокруг много парков — Holland park, Hide park, Green park — кругом посажены цветы, выстрижены газоны. В хороших районах почти нет криминала, так как город буквально напичкан камерами наблюдения и полицией. Полисмены в Англии — моя отдельная любовь, они такие «душки» — брутальные внешне, но очень доброжелательные и улыбчивые,

ЛОНДОН всегда вежливо ответят на любой вопрос и пошутят по-английски. Но есть в Лондоне и другие районы — грязные, неприятные и даже опасные, я сама там была только проездом. Люди самые разные вокруг. В том числе и иммигранты. Их так много! Лондон захлебнулся иммигрантами: Испания, Италия, Румыния, Польша, Греция, Литва — вся Европа там. Они приезжают и пользуются теми же благами и бонусами, что и жители Англии. И так как они приезжают из не очень обеспеченных стран, социальные отчисления, которые платят им здесь, для них — «небо в алмазах»! Кроме того, даже в благополучных районах есть так называемые «social flats» — дешевые квартиры, которые социальные службы города выделяют малообеспеченным людям. Я думаю, что от той суммы, которую платим мы, они выплачивают всего 20–25%. Но у них и зарплата меньше — как правило, они работают в государственных учреждениях.

КВАРТИРНЫЙ ВОПРОС, ИЛИ КАК МЫ ИСКАЛИ ЖИЛЬЕ – Насколько по сравнению с Кипром большая разница в ценах на аренду, недвижимость? – Разница — космическая. И цены не опускаются, а наоборот — растут. Хотя они отличаются даже в пределах Англии. Например, в районе графства Кент, ближе к подземному тоннелю Ла-Манш, который соединяет Англию с Францией, все намного дешевле — и жизнь, и недвижимость. Односпальную квартиру для семьи из трех человек там можно снять за 500–600 фунтов в месяц. В Лондоне конуру для собаки или гараж не снимешь за такие деньги! Мы живем в двуспальной квартире 75 квадратных метров, без веранды, но в хорошем районе, платим 450 фунтов в неделю — арендную плату в Лондоне считают понедельно, а не помесячно. Еще мы столкнулись с тем, что даже если у тебя есть деньги на счету, в Лондоне тебе никто не сдаст квартиру, если ты не работаешь. Необходимо представить справку о том, что ты регулярно получаешь зарплату в Англии, или платить за квартиру за полгода вперед! Также дополнительно оплачиваются муниципальные сборы — за то, что ты живешь в конкретном районе и им пользуешься (например, мы платим 110 фунтов в месяц). Есть налог на телевидение — он платится 1 раз в год. Электричество, отопление, газ — дешевле, чем на Кипре (за 2 месяца выходит 80 фунтов за газ и 50 фунтов за электричество). В Лондоне всe делают через агентство. Хотя ты имеешь право дать частное объявление в газету, есть интернет-порталы,

где люди сами рекламируются (например, zoopla.com.uk). Но много так называемой «кукурузки», когда выставляют дешевый объект, красивые фотографии, а на деле оказывается, что квартиру уже сдали и тебе предлагают другой вариант. Кстати, многие дорогие агентства также работают на «кукурузках». Это рынок, это реклама — двигатель торговли! За клиентов там не хватаются. Когда мы искали квартиру, на нас внимания никто не обращал, так как у нас считался очень дешевый бюджет для Лондона (2 тысячи фунтов в месяц). Город такой большой, шумный. Там не поездишь так, как на Кипре: 15 минут — и ты объездил весь Лимассол! Огромные расстояния, много жилья в старом фонде, где нет лифтов. Посмотришь максимум 2–3 квартиры в день. Припарковаться везде очень сложно, парковки дорогие — в центре, в среднем, 6–9 фунтов в час, и ты еще не всегда найдешь эту парковку! Поэтому много приходилось бегать пешком. В Лондоне помесячная плата за пользование парковкой (60–80 фунтов в месяц), что дает тебе право бесплатно парковаться в своем районе. Парковки платные с 8:30 до 18:30. Вечером и в выходные — паркинг бесплатный. Въезд в Центральный Лондон — в район, где находятся все памятники, музеи, достопримечательности, — платный для всех (11 фунтов) с 9 утра до 6 вечера в будние дни. Это сделано для того, чтобы снизить пробки и загруженность города. Гораздо быстрее передвигаться на метро. Для проезда в транспорте выдаются так называемые Oyster сards, ты кладешь на них деньги, и каждый раз при входе и выходе из метро и автобуса карты сканируются: списывается плата за проезд в зависимости от того, сколько ты проехал. Если не приложить карту на выходе, не откроется шлагбаум, и ты не выйдешь. Проездных абонементов нет. Очень дорогое страхование. Особенно для «новеньких» — тех, кто только приехал в страну. Например, мы платим за страховку автомобиля 1,5 тысячи фунтов в год! Это очень дорого, но если у нас не будет аварий, в следующем году мы заплатим уже всего 500 фунтов.

Я познакомилась с людьми, которые, как и я, работают независимыми риэлтерами, мы общаемся, присылаем друг другу информацию, делимся новостями. Там есть несколько мест, где все агенты собираются, общаются — такой «агентский» бар или паб. С точки зрения организации процесса, система в Англии построена очень хорошо. И если ты хочешь работать, у тебя есть на это силы и желание, нужно всего лишь сделать всe так, как они просят законодательно. Там нет такого: ткнулся — тупик. Там все объяснено, отлажено, организовано. Тебе дают талончик, ты пришел и не сидишь в очереди, не ждешь. Там берегут время — и твое, и свое. Но всe нужно подтверждать документально. И обязательно платить все налоги.

Лондон сам по себе – очень необычный город, это отдельное «государство», 70% населения которого – не англичане!

РАБОТА – Удалось ли тебе в Лондоне найти работу? – Я занимаюсь здесь недвижимостью — так же, как и на Кипре. Естественно, все непросто. На Кипре я жила 10 лет, меня все знают. Здесь меня никто не знает и не доверяет мне — пока. Точно так же и я отношусь к людям настороженно. А еще в плане работы в сфере недвижи65

ЛОНДОН ЗАРПЛАТА – Какая зарплата считается нормальной в Лондоне, чтобы на нее можно было прожить? – Минимальная зарплата по Лондону — 9,15 фунтов в час. A в остальной Англии — 7,85 фунтов в час. Но это самые низкооплачиваемые работники: официанты, продавцы, обслуживающий персонал. Услуги специалистов стоят дороже. Со мной был случай: сломалась стиральная машинка, и стал барахлить холодильник. Я вызвала мастера. А у них так: отдельно берется плата за вызов и за первые 20 минут (примерно 60 фунтов). Если мастер останется дольше, то каждые следующие 20 минут — еще 30 фунтов. В итоге, мастер починил мне холодильник, открыл машинку и закрыл ее со словами «Это не по моей части, вызывайте сантехника». Но деньги взял с меня и за машинку, и за холодильник — 120 фунтов! Я говорю: «Как же так?» А он мне: «Но я же ее открыл, значит работал!» Дальше — продолжение эпопеи! Пришел сантехник, снова взял отдельно за вызов и 4 часа чинил слив в стиральной машинке. В общем, содрал с нас по полной! А ровно через 1,5 месяца у нас опять забилась канализация и пришлось снова его вызывать! Вот так люди умудряются работать… В Лондон приезжает много молодых людей: они сначала учатся, потом, естественно, ищут работу и поначалу, пока набираются опыта, согласны на минимальную оплату. Тебе никогда не дадут хорошую зарплату сразу, если только ты не супер-специалист. Сначала тебе предлагают минимальные деньги, но говорят: отработаешь какое-то время, зарплату увеличим. И действительно повышают — не обманывают. Одна моя знакомая начинала с 1,5 тысяч фунтов в банке, сейчас она получает пять тысяч.

С точки зрения организации процесса, система в Англии построена очень хорошо. И если ты хочешь работать, у тебя есть на это силы и желание, нужно всего лишь сделать всё так, как они просят законодательно. Чем больше работаешь, тем больше зарплата. Но и выше налоги! У моей подруги муж зарабатывает 12 тысяч фунтов в месяц, почти 40% от своей зарплаты он отдает на налоги, так как считается высокооплачиваемым работником, при этом его семья не имеет права на помощь от государства, кроме бесплатной медицины. Если ты работаешь, можно взять кредит на покупку недвижимости, заплатив первый взнос всего 5% от суммы! А если это твоя первая недвижимость, то предусмотрены дополнительные льготы. Например, процент по кредиту — от 0,5 до 2–2,5% в год!

О ДОРОГОВИЗНЕ И МАГАЗИНАХ Я по жизни транжира. Но первые 2 месяца экономила на всем. Когда ты начинаешь что-то зарабатывать в фунтах, то воспринимаешь все уже по-другому, привыкаешь, что огурцы и помидоры стоят 6 фунтов — и это нормально! Если покупать продукты в супермаркетах (таких как Tesco, Sainsbury’s — вроде нашего Carrefour или Lidl), то выходит ненамного дороже, чем на Кипре, а какието продукты даже дешевле. Очень вкусная и недорогая местная баранина, говядина, курятина, рыба (лосось из Шотландии). Есть базары-минимаркеты, куда привозят экологически чистые продукты из фермерских хозяйств — там дорого. И есть целая сеть огромных маркетов Whole Foods — там продают только биопродукты. Хорошее 66

качество, все чисто, красиво, но цены — в 3 раза дороже, чем в обычном супермаркете. Туда ходим только по большим праздникам! Есть и обычные рынки — англичане их обожают и с большим удовольствием купят что-то у бабушки на рынке, чем в магазине. Если жить за городом — а в пригородах много красивых деревушек — ухоженных, спокойных, зеленых, с фермами, рядом с рощами-лесами — там еще цены вполне приемлемы. Но Лондон, особенно центральный, непомерно дорогой! Многие англичане недовольны правительством, высокими ценами и налогами. Мы периодически видим митингующих с табличками. Жители центрального Лондона требуют повышения зарплат в 4–5 раз, строительства социального жилья для местных малообеспеченных людей — сами лондонцы не могут себе позволить купить в городе жильe. А агентства здесь охотятся за владельцами недвижимости, а желающих ее купить — хватает!

ДОСУГ Если у тебя есть свободное время, можно найти себе массу занятий по интересам. Практически все музеи — бесплатные и работают очень долго: с 9 утра до 7 вечера! Повсюду есть какие-то платные увеселительные мероприятия, музыкальные фестивали, джазовые клубы — в Лондоне вы найдете все, что душе угодно. Вообще Лондон — такая же деревня, как и Кипр, только порайонно. Ты гуляешь

ЛОНДОН по парку — с тобой из 10 человек 5 точно поздороваются или улыбнутся! Здесь всe на виду — те же маленькие магазинчики, ресторанчики… У нас есть бар рядом с домом — я захожу туда иногда выпить бокал вина, поболтать с соседями. Что интересно, ты можешь с мужчиной общаться, и нет такого, как здесь: «Пойдем, красивая, кататься…» Там все проще и без каких-либо требований или обязательств. Пообщались — разошлись. Особо хочется сказать о кипрской диаспоре в Лондоне — это целый район под названием Southgate. Когда туда попадаешь, чувствуешь себя, как на Кипре: красуется вывеска BoC, кондитерская «Вилтон», кебаб, парикмахерская у Костаса, Pizza Hut… И всюду звучит кипрский диалект! Я была приятно удивлена, когда впервые оказалась здесь — словно вернулась на старый добрый Кипр!

и репутация и к которой трудно придраться. И если бы я могла заново прожить эту жизнь, то однозначно училась бы в строгой Англии, в этих вековых студенческих замках, где, как мне кажется, до сих пор летают призраки ученых, поэтов и писателей, людей искусства…

КУЛЬТУРА И ВОСПИТАНИЕ

Англичане знамениты своей интеллигентностью, манерами, приверженностью традициям и почитанием королевских особ — они, затаив дыхание, смотрят вслед проезжающим каретам Их Высочеств. Вообще, все, что связанно с аристократией и воспитанием, у них в почете! Случайно в парке я познакомилась с одной местной леди. Когда я назвала ей свое имя Татьяна, она с радостью сообщила мне, что знает о том, что в царской России была принцесса Татьяна (а я, к своему стыду, об этом даже не знала!) ОБ ОБРАЗОВАНИИ Люди очень воспитаны. Даже дети. Есть много разных мнений на тему Как-то я каталась на коньках и упала, и ко британского образования (к слову, многие мне эти малыши белобрысые подбежали, киприоты получают образование именно коленки обтрусили, смотрят снизу вверх в Англии). Сегодня мода на одно, завтра — на меня: “Are you alright?” Бровки домиком. на другое. Но у меня своя точка зрения И не отлипли ведь, пока я не улыбнулась по этому поводу. Здесь веками строилась и не сказала, что все хорошо. Фактически система, впользу которой говорят время поголовно все дети, будь то в ресторане

или в автобусе, вежливые, спокойные, опрятные… Никто истерики не устраивает, всегда «спасибо», «пожалуйста»… За этим следят родители, детей контролируют: «Ты поздоровался?», «Ты поблагодарил?»

О ДРУЖБЕ – Удалось ли найти в Лондоне новых друзей? – Я сужу по своим знакомым, у них так: если друг есть, то он, как правило, один или два. Они дружат очень «глубоко», часто со школьной скамьи. Мы пытались приглашать их в гости, общаться, но им хватает тех друзей, которые у них уже есть. При этом они всегда улыбаются, приветливы, глаза широко распахнуты и любят весь мир! Лично я обожаю Лондон с его дождливой погодой и своеобразным климатом — зато после дождя в воздухе всегда свежий запах травы и зелени! Я считаю, что жить можно везде. Главное — правильно настроиться. Зачем выискивать какие-то недостатки или проблемы? Они есть и в Лондоне, и на Кипре. Не могу сказать, что горю желанием прожить здесь всю свою жизнь, но лет 5–7 я в Лондоне с удовольствием проведу. А там — как сложится! Мечта сбылась — прекрасно, но пусть появляются и новые мечты!

ПРОФИЛАКТИКА И ЛЕЧЕНИЕ

Обыкновенные и незначительные повседневные действия, такие как контроль веса, ограничение потребления алкоголя, регулярные физические нагрузки, отказ от курения очень сильно влияют на снижение риска развития рака молочной железы. АЙЯ-НАПА — КИПРСКАЯ ИБИЦА

Тaкже предметом гордости АйяНапы является монастырь XVI века с мраморным фонтаном и часовней Латинов. Монастырь эпохи Венецианского правления, который был воздвигнут в честь Девы Марии примерно в 1500 году, с 1978 года функционирует как Конференццентр, обслуживающий церкви Кипра и Среднего Востока.

В недалeком прошлом Айя-Напа — небольшая рыбацкая деревушка, затерянная средь холмов близ мыса Капо Греко. Еe жители бережно хранили свои традиции и достопримечательности, пребывая в тени одного из самых популярных курортов Средиземноморья Фамагусты. Всe изменили события 1974 года, когда красивый и оживлeнный город на востоке страны в одно мгновение превратился в город-призрак — Фамагуста попала в зону турецкой оккупации. Чуть позже, когда жизнь на острове стала налаживаться, воротилы туристического бизнеса обратили внимание на маленькую Айя-Напу, вокруг которой раскинулись нетронутые белоснежные пляжи, а сама деревушка вдруг открыла взору свои сокровища, бережно хранимые веками. МЕСТО ПАРАЛИМНИ — ЦЕНТР ВОСТОЧНОГО КИПРА

Айя-Напа открыла единственный в своeм роде музей Таласса (Museum Thalassa). Главной приманкой этого музея служит выполненная в натуральную величину точная копия торгового парусника, который затонул 2300 лет тому назад возле северного побережья. Обломки настоящего корабля можно увидеть в Кирении в музее кораблей.

В отличие от ближайших соседей — Айя-Напы и Протараса — жизнь в Паралимни не замирает на зиму, а бурлит круглый год. Именно здесь расположены основные торговые центры, фешенебельные рестораны и многочисленные лавки и магазинчики. Если вы приехали отдыхать в Айя-Напу или Протарас и планируете заняться шопингом, то ваш путь лежит именно в Паралимни. Совсем рядом с Паралимни находится деревня Деринья, которая славится своим клубничным фестивалем. Несмотря на свои небольшие размеры, в Деринье есть сразу несколько исторических и церковных достопримечательностей: Церковь Святого Георгия, построенная в XVII веке, церковь Святой Марины XV века и церковь Пресвятой Девы Марии XVII века. Также интерес представляет музей народного фольклора. Он находится в старинном доме и наглядно представляет хозяйство и быт киприотов. Тем, кому интересна современная история и политическая жизнь острова, будет любопытно заглянуть в культурный центр оккупированной территории Аммохостоса (Фамагусты). Наверху на смотровой площадке можно в бинокль рассмотреть всю оккупированную территорию и заброшенный район Вароша.

В наше время одним из самых лучших курортов на острове является юго-восточный округ. Достопримечательности здесь настолько интересны и красивы, что район до сих пор не теряет своей красоты и величия.

В настоящее время центром Паралимни является так называемая церковная площадь «Три сестры». Она считается самой большой площадью на Кипре, на которой расположены сразу 3 церкви. Две из них посвящены Святому Георгию. Одна построена в XV веке, а вторая — современная, 1965 года постройки. Чуть дальше расположен древний византийский храм Пресвятой Девы Марии. Стены храма выложены из местного камня и датируются XIII веком. Изначально на этом месте была небольшая церковь, которую впоследствии надстроили и расширили. С размерами изменилось и название церкви. Многие местные жители называют этот храм ещe именем Святой Анны. Когда- то все его стены были украшены фресками, но, к сожалению, до наших дней сохранились лишь небольшие фрагменты. Храм является памятником архитектуры и привлекает большое внимание туристов.
