A Small Piece of Heaven in the Country of Contrasts, Cyprus
The synergy between tradition and ingenuity allows the main cities in Cyprus to rise and shine in the eyes of its inhabitants and visitors. One of such shimmering cities is Lemesos, known also as Limassol. The Bond to the Past
Built between two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, Limassol is now a modern city located on the southern coast of contrasting Cyprus. Known for its incredibly rich and large cultural tradition, amazing nightlife, and touristic as well as industrial importance, Limassol is what many people might call a “small piece of heaven”. Even though there is evidence that it was inhabited in antiquity, the city is considered new. However, the rich past of the area fascinates all local and foreign history lovers who are intrigued by the beauty of its authentic landmarks, especially the old port castle. Romance enthusiasts are also attracted by the beautiful castle since it was the place where Richard the Lionheart married and crowned as Queen of England, his love, Queen Berengaria of Navarre. King Richard was also the one who de-
stroyed Amathus and transferred everybody to Limassol. It is obvious how British culture contributed to the development of both artistic and intellectual life in Cyprus, and why its influence meant a great deal to the manner Limassol created itself. But the French, as well as Venetians and the famous Ottoman Empire also contributed to making the place what it is today, an intriguing mixture of beautiful cultural influences.

On Memory Lane with Cyprus: 15 Millennia of Ancient History Remembered Small in the area, big in history. That is how this beautiful Island located in the North-Eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea is best described. The meaning behind its name is actually still a bit of debate for some historians.

ne theory is based on the
mythology suggesting that Cyprus was coined for the name that was given by the goddess Aphrodite. Another theory suggests that the country was named after its abundance of copper. Furthermore, the Greek word for the Mediterranean cypress tree

could also be the reason that this island got the name Cyprus. This debate has not been resolved up till now and remains a fascinating mystery to both its inhabitants and tourists. Cyprus has its own fair share of famous historical and archaeological sites. Neolithic villages, medieval castles, and ancient Roman ruins are found easily around the country. Thanks to its colorful past, the land
has transformed into a sought-after destination, attracting a number of tourists every year. And what is one of the common reasons for tourists to come flocking to a country? Food, of course and Cyprus promises to make you want more every single time. With its mouth-watering cuisines to its refreshing drinks, it is said that Cyprus is one of the finest in the Mediterranean when it comes to

HISTORY gastronomy. The only way to actually experience that is to visit and treat your taste buds with food that has been evolved, improved and passed down through a number of generations. Tourist spots such as Baths of Aphrodite, The Tombs of the Kings, and Paphos Archaeological Park are only but a few of the vast places that would surely attract history aficionados. And all these were not built overnight. Traveling back to this country’s captivating history is indeed well worth the time.
CYPRUS BECAME AN INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC ON AUGUST 16, 1960, AND BECAME A MAJOR TOURIST DESTINATION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN. IT HAS BEEN A PART OF THE EUROPEAN UNION AS WELL SINCE MAY 2004.
Ancient Cyprus
Cyprus is known as the “Island of Love”. One would wonder how this came to be, but actually, the reason behind this is plain and simple. According to mythology, Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty was born from the foam of the sea on the South-Western coast of Cyprus. During 7000-6000 BCE, there had already been inhabitants on this island. During this Neolithic era, a flourishing trade in copper was established and although

Classical Cyprus
Around 546 BCE, the Persians curiously arrived on the island. Cypriot kings were astonishingly friendly to the Persians when they heard that King Cyrus of Persia was sailing towards the west. They willingly surrendered their land and kingdom to the Persians which marked the start of their long peaceful time in Cyprus. It wasn’t until the arrival of Alexander the Great that the island of Cyprus got liberated from the Persians once again. This led to the next era in Cyprian history which is the Hellen-
istic period. This was when arts blossomed, culture flourished, and people's lifestyle changed.
Roman Cyprus
The Romans came and turned Cyprus into their province in 58 BCE and this occupation lasted for three long centuries. This is one of the reasons why Cyprus has remains of vast Roman influence in its culture which of course, includes religion. Christianity eventually spread and got accepted by the Cypriots all over the country through the works of the apostles Paul and Varnavas. Eventually, after the division of Roman Empire, the Eastern Roman Empire took over Cyprus, and thus happened the birth of the Byzantine Empire. Cyprus was looked after by the Byzantine Empire fairly well, but the Arabs decided to invade this beautiful island shortly after this. It was in the 650’s when the Arabs waged destructive raids

upon Cyprus. However, in the year 688, the emperor of the Byzantine Empire and caliph Abd al-Malik of Arabia finally agreed to jointly rule Cyprus. This lasted for another 277 years.
Modern Cyprus
Now, take a look at the harmonious ambiance surrounding Cyprus today. Who could have guessed that this peaceful place was once a battlefield for conquerors from different nations? It has indeed aged gracefully. Cyprus became an independent republic on August 16, 1960, and became a major tourist destination in the Mediterranean. It has been a part of the European Union as well since May 2004. The years of history that this island has endured, have made modern Cyprus very enriching.. From arts to music to culture and cuisine, this country has surpassed many challenges that have moulded Cyprus into what it has become now. ■

Queen, the quartet from London took the crowd by storm when they first started making hits during the 1970’s. This British band was formed in London in 1971 and signed their first recording contract in the year 1973. This first album was named QUEEN and from there, the rest was history.

Meet The Band Members
Queen has been known for their exceptional style in making music throughout the years. And this undeniable fame would not have been possible if not for the four band members who contributed their skills to the fullest. On lead vocals and piano is Freddie Mercury, whose real name is Farrokh Bulsara, Brian May on lead guitar and vocals, Roger Taylor is on vocals and also took over the drums, and finally, John Deacon rocking the bass guitar. These guys were the people behind the hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock you, We Are The Champions and a lot more. How these four men found each other has also been a fascinating story. Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor were from a 1967 band called Smile. Their lead vocalist was Tim Staffell. In the end, Tim decided he was not that interested in making music anymore, so he recommended his flatmate to take over who has also been a fan of the band Smile. That flatmate of his happened to be Freddie. Smile disbanded a while after that and Brian and Roger took Freddie to form a
new rock group. The band was then completed with the recruitment of John Deacon right before their debut album. It was Freddie Mercury’s suggestion to call the band QUEEN, which they all accepted. He stated in one interview, that he finds the title Queen to be very regal, strong, universal and immediate. He also said that he was well aware of the gay connotations, but stressed that it was just one facet of it. Their band logo was designed by Freddie and he incorporated the band members’ astrological signs. This was a bit of surprise to fans since Freddie emphasised that he does not believe in astrology.
Sadly, all good things come to an end. It was in 1991 when the band had to put their music making to a full halt. Freddie Mercury, the band’s iconic lead singer died on 24th of November 1991 from AIDS-related pneumonia at the age of 45. Queen has been given the 2207th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002 and in 2006, Freddie Mercury was featured in Time Asia Magazine as one of the most influential Asian heroes of the past 60 years. The band’s net worth in 2016 has risen to a whopping $3 million despite the members not being together anymore. Indeed, they have left a legacy through their songs and unique style. Their songs are still being played on the radios, still being bought online and are still being sung in different renditions. ■

After more than four decades since their debut in 1971, Queen has become an important symbol in the music industry. They even made it to the Guinness Book of World Records thanks to their supporters. Platres Herb Festival
Travelling Stage Paphos This is a multicultural program created by Pafos 2017 that takes place in different places in Paphos with ensembles from Greece, France and Spain and the Balkans. The Stage that travels is a tool for transporting and presenting events at conventional and unexpected places, aiming to reach a mass audience.
The Platres herb festival takes place at the Cultural Centre of Platres and Platres’ Main Square. Its purpose is to demonstrate the beneficial properties of the Cypriot herbs, which are in abundance in the Troоdos area (674 different species), to people’s health through herbal exhibitions, herb tasting, educational seminars, an entertainment show & organised herbal walks and visits to botanical gardens.

Larnaca Summer Festival Summer in Cyprus is festival season, with Cypriots celebrating festivals of culture, like music and performing arts. This annual event provides outdoor/ indoor concerts and entertainment including dance, theatre and music, film screenings and poetry by national and international talents at various town venues throughout July.

Ancient Greek Drama Festival

Every year in July & August, ancient theatres in Cyprus host one of the greatest festivals of ancient Greek drama recreating stories written by prominent ancient playwrights such as Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes in modern times. The month-long festival welcomes several international theatre companies to present one performance each, either in Ancient or Modern Greek. A short description of the plot is provided in English as well. Every year, the festival attracts thousands of Cypriot and foreign audiences. Events take place in Limassol, Paphos and Nicosia under the aegis of the Cyprus Tourism and the Cyprus Theatre Organisations. Koumantaria Festival The Koumantaria or Commandaria Festival is celebrated in Laneia village, one of the 14 villages in a small area in the Troodos Mountains producing the signature Cypriot Commandaria Wine. Commandaria is a sweet amber-coloured dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes using the Xynisteri and Mavro varieties. It is thought to be the world’s oldest named wine still in production, dating back to 800 BC. The annual week-long festival draws many crowds each year, both locals and tourists alike to Laneia. The Amathusia Festival This festival takes place among the ruins of the Agora, of the lower city kingdom of Amathus, 10 km east of Limassol. It was once among the strongest and most powerful kingdoms of antiquity and had a great sanctuary of Aphrodite. This weekend festival includes performances by Cypriot contemporary dance groups, top string quartets and Greek and Cypriot singers of both traditional and modern styles.
This 10-day long annual event of evening fun and frolic in August and September is open to one and all. 15,000+ visitors come to the Festival, pay an entry fee, and drink as much free wine as they wish. Transportation from other major cities is free. Local transportation can be made available by 4VIPTour. The site is dominated by the 7m tall ‘The Vraga Man’, a Cypriot winegrower. Festivities include traditional music, bouzouki, singing, dancing, Cypriot food priced cheaply, fireworks displays and treading of the grapes.

Greetings My name is Kyriacos Soteriou and I am the executive chef of Louis Hotels in Cyprus. My aim as executive chef is to constantly upgrade and improve the quality of the food served through motivated diligence. I strongly believe that cooking is a source of inspiration and passion as well as an innate need to create and enjoy. Cyprus being an island in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, has been influenced by many different cultures. Roman, Greek, Italian and Ottoman to name a few, which can be seen as a direct reflection in the diversity in Cypriot food. Being formed by an assortment of different societies throughout history the cuisine has developed it’s own personality.

Lemon: You can’t go into a Cyprus house without this being part of it. Traditionally enjoyed around Easter, Avgolemono has a frothy lemon flavoured broth. Egg-Lemon Soup is prepared with many different meats including; Lamb, Beef, Chicken, and even fish. The chicken version is preferred. • Fasolada: Fasolada translates to “bean”. This is a Greek bean soup which comes prepared with dry white beans, olive oil, celery, carrots, tomatoes, parsley, onion, and bay leaf. Lima beans are sometimes substituted for white beans.

Cypriots traditionally make their sweets and desserts with turunc or bergamot, figs, aubergines, walnuts and honey. Watermelon and pumpkins are processed into something like a jam but without over-cooking it. The fruit is then soaked, depending on the fruit, or as long as two weeks. Then the fruit is boiled with sugar until proper texture is attained. Loukoum, Ravani, Tulumba and Baklava are well-known local desserts.

Triantafyllo. It is made from the extract of the Cyprus rose. Once extracted it becomes a thick pink concentrate, add milk or water and the drink becomes refreshing as it is sweet. Coffee is often made strong and has its own characteristics that mirror the island’s diverse history. When served, the locals will accompany coffee with demitasse cups filled with dissolved sugar, known as Glyko or medium sweet (“metrio”); only a select few will brave unsweetened (“sketo”). Iced drinks in Cyprus mainly consist of Frappe. Much like the coffee Cypriots enjoy their Frappes with sugar (Glyko, metrio, or Sketo) but it can also be served with milk. All milk (Olo Gala), Miso, miso (half milk, half water), or Mavro (all water). Brandy and zivania are, without question, the most popular drinks on the island. Beer is also a favourite among Cypriots. Zivania is made with pomace, the residue of grapes when pressed for wine making. ■

Под именем Венеры ей поклонялись в Древнем Риме, где она считалась прародительницей римлян через своего сына — троянского героя Энея. На Кипре признание Афродиты пришло на смену богине плодородия, которая в период поздней бронзы была богиней Бронзы. Доказательством служит маленькая статуэтка богини Плодородия, которая наступает ногой на бронзовый талант. И Бронза, и Афродита отождествлялись в древности с Кипром. В эпоху эллинизма особой популярностью пользовались Адонии — праздники в его честь, связанные с распространением греко-восточного культа Осириса. Во времена Птолемеев множество паломников из Греции, Ассирии и Египта каждую весну приезжали в Пафос для участия в жертвоприношениях Афродите. Император Август восстановил заново храм Афродиты в Пафосе, пострадавший во время землетрясения в 15 году до н. э. Посередине храма Афродиты в Пафосе находился предмет конической формы, который изображен на монетах римских императоров. Этот предмет отождествляли с черным коническим камнем, найденным вблизи храма богини. Ученые считают, что он заменял статую Афродиты. Сейчас этот камень находится в музее в Кукля. С появлением на острове христианства Богородицу стали называть именами, имеющими прямое отношение к Афродите — Богородица Афродитисса. Богине любви и красоты посвящено множество произведений искусства, особенно многочисленны скульптурные изображения. остались только руины времен Древнего Рима и расцвета Византийской культуры, разбросанные по известняковому мысу, который тянется вдоль побережья залива Эпископи. Этот потрясающий археологический памятник, который входит в список памятников Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО, раскинулся в 13 километрах от Лимассола. Во время раскопок было найдено много памятников древней культуры. Римский форум. Римский форум или Агора — это впечатляющее сооружение начале III века н.э., в котором разместились общественные бани и просторный зимний сад, окруженный с обеих сторон портиками с мраморными колоннами.
Это самый запоминающийся памятник современного Куриона. Историки выяснили, что однажды этот театр был разрушен землетрясением и восстановлен во втором или третьем веке нашей эры. Бани Эвстолия. Банный комплекс в юго-восточной части Куриона, когдато был резиденцией городского богача. утратило статус элитной резиденции и превратилось в общественную баню. Святилище Аполлона Гилата. Расположенное в двух километрах к западу от Куриона святилище было одним из важнейших храмов Древнего Кипра, в котором поклонялись Аполлону. Этот храм был заброшен в 4 веке нашей эры. Стадион. Руины древнего стадиона воздвигнутого во 2 веке нашей эры раскинулись к востоку от святилища Аполлона. Когда-то построенный в форме буквы U стадион с легкостью вмещал 6000 зрителей. Сооружение функционировало до конца 5 века нашей эры.

Ущелье Авакас Ущелье Авакас — одно из красивейших мест острова, мало посещаемых «классическими» отдыхающими. Однако если вам по душе яркие впечатления, движение и преодоление препятствий, загадки природы и редкие растения, то Авакас — именно то, что вам нужно!

поистине рай для любителей походов. Именно здесь вас ждут захватывающие дух виды и бесконечное разнообразие местной флоры и фауны, включая исчезающий centauria akamantis – растение-эндемик с фиолетовыми цветами, которое растет только в этом ущелье. Узнать его вы сможете по табличке, ведь в этом заповеднике все редкие растения отмечены специальными знаками. Будто высеченное из известкового камня, ущелье поднимается на высоту до 30 метров и резко сужается кверху, так что преодолеть его непросто! Пешеходная тропа здесь вьется вдоль реки, которая и сформировала это природное чудо много сотен лет назад. В сезон дождей она может превратиться в бурный поток. Однако пусть вас это не пугает, ведь в ущелье проложен специальный пешеходный маршрут, разработанный Лесным департаментом Министерства сельского хозяйства, природных ресурсов и окружающей среды Кипра. Протяженность оборудованной тропы – 3 км, однако на свой риск можно пройти дальше. Особо любопытным туристам придется пробираться вглубь, в некоторых местах карабкаться по камням, перелезать через поваленные деревья. Входя в ущелье, вы сразу оказываетесь в природном коридоре из скал и далее идете вглубь по сужающемуся проходу. В некоторых местах скалы нависают прямо над головой. Это зрелище немного пугает, но завораживает своей красотой. Именно Авакас является одной из основных тем

открыток, которые туристы привозят на память с Кипра. Стены ущелья имеют «волнистую» поверхность, и если вы любитель фотографировать – именно здесь вы получите самые удивительные снимки. В богатом растительностью ущелье кроме прочих деревьев растут сосны, кипарисы, можжевельник, дикие фиговые деревья, папоротники и дубы, и, конечно же, здесь изобилие диких цветов. Животный мир представлен лисами, зайцами, соколами, воронами, ночными совами, рептилиями и забавными дикими горными козами, которых – если не вблизи, то на высоких скалах вверху – вы точно увидите! И все же не все красоты и тайны ущелья нам доступны. Одно из самых удивительных и таинственных мест Авакаса для отдыхающих закрыто, а пройти туда без специального разрешения и снаряжения невозможно. Несколько лет назад местные пастухи обнаружили дверь в одной из скал. Ученые еще не до конца исследовали это место. На данный момент известно, что вниз под землю ведет узкий лаз, а далее, на глубине 70 метров, были обнаружены древние катакомбы, представляющие собой проходы, галереи, подземные залы, образуюшие огромный лабиринт. Загадочное подземелье до конца не изучено, но в нем уже были найдены наконечники стрел и глиняная посуда. Ущелье Авакас – настоящая жемчужина Кипра. И хотя посвятить его исследованию вам придется почти целый день, вы никогда об этом не пожалеете, ведь остров откроется вам с новой, неожиданной стороны! ■

Следите за табличками, предупреждающими об опасных местах и возможных камнепадах. • Выбирайте удобную обувь — без каблуков, на утойчивой подошве, желательно фиксированную и быстросохнущую. Туфли и шлепанцы надевать нельзя: вы не сможете в них идти по скольким камням. • Нельзя ходить в ущелье в пасмурную погоду. Дождь может за несколько минут превратить ручей в мощный поток, который сносит все на своем пути. • Не рекомендуется ходить в ущелье в одиночку, предварительно не известив кого-нибудь о своих планах. Это место не только красиво, но и опасно! • Обязательно возьмите с собой запас питьевой воды! • Будьте готовы к встрече… с дикими козами. Появившись на пешеходной тропе, животные могут вас изрядно напугать. Монастырь Киккос
Этот монастырь, построенный в 6 веке нашей эры, считается одним из самых известных на Кипре — он пользуется особым почетом у туристов и паломников со всего мира. Его полное название звучит так: Священный царский ставропигиальный монастырь Кикской иконы Божией Матери. Ставропигиальным его называют потому, что храм по легенде крестоположенный: в его основании заложен Святой Крест. Многие едут сюда только ради того, чтобы лично прикоснуться к известнейшей православной святыне — иконе Божьей Матери, которую, если верить преданиям, апостол Лука написал еще при земной жизни Богородицы и по ее просьбе. Легенда гласит, что когда чудодейственную икону привезли из Константинополя на Кипр, все с ликованием встречали ее на берегу и сразу пошли крестным ходом туда, где предназначено было заложить монастырь. При этом, приветствуя Пресвятую Деву, головы склоняли и люди, и звери, и птицы, и деревья. С тех пор икона благословила весь остров. Все чудеса, сотворенные иконой, отражены в летописях монастыря Киккос. Один из самых известных случаев — избавление от саранчи в 1760 году. С давних пор икона покрыта бархатной пеленой, чтобы никто не дерзнул увидеть сияющих ликов Пресвятой Богородицы и ее Божественного Младенца: считается, что у иконы настолько сильная энергетика, что нельзя, чтобы она смотрела на человека. Рассказывают, что в 1669 году Патриарх Александрийский Герасим приподнял пелену и тотчас ослеп. Прощение и исцеление были дарованы ему лишь после долгого покаяния и многих лет молитв.
Четыре раз полыхали пожары в монастыре, но ни один из них не нанес вреда иконе Божьей Матери, к которой всегда стоит очередь прихожан, желающих приложиться к святыне. Монастырь Божьей Матери Троодитисса
Главная святыня монастыря — чудотворная икона Богоматери — едва не была утрачена в эпоху иконоборчества. Ее спас монах, имя которого история не сохранила. Икона знаменита многими чудесами и тем, что хранит легкую улыбку на устах Царицы Небесной. Сюда приезжают, чтобы попросить божественной помощи в избавлении от бесплодия — кроме чудодейственной иконы, в монастыре хранится кожаный пояс, украшенный золотом и серебром. По легенде он помогает женщинам забыть о бесплодии. Но, если поговорить с местными монахами, можно услышать и о других чудесах, сотворенных иконой. Совет: ни в коем случае не покидайте монастырь, не отведав местных яблок, которые считаются самыми вкусными на Кипре.
Монастырь Божией Матери Трикуккя
На одном из диалектов Кипра, «Трикуккя» — это боярышник с тремя косточками. Как связан боярышник с небольшим женским монастырем никто не знает. Точная дата основания монастыря тоже затерялась в веках — есть только упоминания в летописях, что он появился раньше знаменитого Киккоса. Главная святыня монастыря — чудотворная икона Пресвятой Богородицы Трикукотисса, перед которой молятся с просьбой предотвратить стихийные бедствия. Эта украшенная золотом и перламутром святыня знаменита своим тридцатидневным «плачем», который случился в 1997 году. Монастырь выполняет функцию музея: здесь много византийских икон, исторических документов и старинных предметов утвари. Сестры обители известны на весь мир своим гостеприимством: гостей и паломников всегда угощают чаем, хлебом и вкуснейшим джемом собственного приготовления. ■

Афродита — покровительница острова
Как рассказывает Геосиод в «Теогонии», Крон разрубил тело своего отца Урана на куски и бросил их в море. Тогда вспенилось синее море, а из пены его вышла прекрасная златокудрая дива. Земфир нежным своим дыханием на морской волне и пене вынес Афродиту на Кипр в Пафос — так была описана история Гомером. Когда Афродита ступила на землю, на ней распустились прекрасные цветы анемоны и капори, которые и по сей день цветут на камнях в Пафосе. Встретить Афродиту вышел сам Зевс-громовержец и его дочери. С тех пор Кипр стал любимым островом богини любви, на котором она и предпочитала проводить все время. Как-то раз красавица Афродита игралась с малышом Эросом, богом любви, который пускает стрелы свои в каждого кто ему приглянулся, и нечаянно укололась Афродита о его стрелу. Тут из зарослей смоковницы вышел юный прекрасный Адонис, сын Царя Кинира. Влюбилась Афродита в красавца без памяти. Да и он не смог быть равнодушным к неземной красоте Богини.

Но прознал о случайной страсти супруг Афродиты, воинственный Бог Арис. В гневе, превратился он в дикого вепря, и когда Адонис охотился в лесах Акамаса, подло напал на него и запорол острыми клыками. Из ран Адониса брызнула кровь, упала на землю Кипра. Бедная Афродита, почуяв беду, побежала в лес, но нашла своего возлюбленного бездыханным. Долго горевала прекрасная Богиня, слезы ее лились ручьем. Из капель крови Адониса взошли на Кипре маки алые, а из хрустальных слез Афродиты — белые анемоны. Образ Афродиты-ее красота, нежность и величие, передается в мифах и легендах сквозь призму прошлого так хорошо, что будто ты с ней знаком. По мимо своей красоты богиня имела доброе сердце. В этом легко убедиться окунувшись в еще один миф о Пигмалионе.

На Кипре жил царь. Звали его Пигмалион. Был он человеком творческим и, в свободное от царских хлопот время, ваял из камня скульптуры. Однажды скульптура прекрасной девушки так удалась ему, что как живая смотрела на него белоснежная холодная дева. И влюбился Пигмалион в творение рук своих. Нарек он статую Галатея, что переводится, как молочная богиня, так как высечена она была из белого мрамора. Не мог встретить в реальной жизни бедный царь девушки похожей на свою мраморную возлюбленную. И взмолился он богам, просил оживить бесчувственный мрамор. Но боги лишь посмеялись над глупым царем. Только Афродита, покровительница острова сжалилась над бедолагой Пигмалионом. Однажды, вернувшись в царские покои, вместо мраморного изваяния увидел он молодую прекрасную девушку. — Кто ты? — удивился царь — Я — твоя Галатея! Ни ужели не признал ты меня, любимый мой! Пал на колени царь. Не мог он поверить своему счастью. Стал целовать он теплые ладони прекрасной Галатеи и конечно, сразу же сделал ей предложение. Прекрасная дева родила царю двух дочек. Старшую из них они назвали величественным именем Пафос, которое в те далекие времена давали только девочкам царского рода. Когда она выросла, превратилась в красавицу и умницу. И женился
на ней герой Троянской войны Кинир. И построил он в честь своей обожаемой супруги прекрасный город Пафос. А в нем, 100 зальное святилище, посвященное Афродите, благодаря которой стал возможен союз Пигмалиона и Галатеи и рождение их дочерей. Большое количество кипрских легенд и мифов обращено к богам горы Олимп. И каждый знает о главном и великом среди остальных богов, покорители грома и молнии-Зевсе. О нем по устам бродит много рассказов, но одна легенда показывает нам как важно быть открытым и добрым человеком.
Гостеприимства щедрая душа. Легенда о Зевсе
В стародавние времена, когда Боги жили рядом с людьми, на вершине горы Олимп была резиденция Зевса-громовержца. Любил Зевс обратиться в добро-молодца и гулять по острову. Все были рады молодому красавцу, не догадываясь, что перед ними сам Зевс, наперебой киприоты зазывали в свои дома желанного гостя. Кормили, поили, на ночлег мягкие перины стелили. Хвастался Зевс среди Богов — Олимпийцев, какие гостеприимные люди на Кипре живут, как встречают его радушно. Тогда мудрая Гера посмеялась над своим мужем-простаком. — Конечно, молодому, богатому мужчине каждый рад будет, обратись в старца нищего, посмотришь, нужен ли ты людям — сказала Гера. Призадумался Зевс. Обратился он в старца, больного, нищего и спустился с Олимпа к людям. Злыми оказались те, кто еще вчера был к нему так добр. Кто просто захлопывал дверь, видя убогого старика, а кто и камнем кидал вослед. Разозлился Зевс не на шутку. «Ах, вот какие двуличные вы, островитяне!» -подумал всемогущий Зевс. Вернусь на Олимп, спалю остров молниями, нашлю на них громы страшные. Но тут в конце дороги заметил он лачугу. На пороге сидели два старичка, муж и жена. С улыбкой приветствовали они путника, позвали в дом. Угостили не хитрым угощением, водицей родниковой, да краюхой хлеба. Предложили свою постель путнику, отдохнуть, ибо только одна скромная лежанка была в бедной лачуге. Отлегло с души у Зевса. Не такие уж плохие киприоты! Обратился он в свое божественное обличие.
— За доброту вашу, старики, помилую я киприотов. И любое ваше желание исполню! — Одного только мы желали бы. Не расставаться никогда, даже после смерти. Исполнил Зевс свое обещание. Когда пришло время старикам умирать, заснули они в объятиях друг друга и превратил их Зевс в оливковое дерево. Переплетен узлами ствол векового исполина. Как будто в объятиях друг друга стоят два человека. Еще много легенд хранит маленький остров. Каждая из них — драгоценный самоцвет в короне истории Кипра и ключ, для понимания характеров островитян. Каждое сказание несет в себе поучающий урок, характер тех времен, а также четкое осознание того, что киприоты уважают и ценят историю своего родного края. ■

КАПО ГРЕКО: там, где небо сливается с синевой моря
Мыс Греко — это место, где можно забыть обо всем на свете, где нет никаких проблем, никаких забот, только бескрайнее море и ощущения полной свободы и счастья. Здесь нет шумных дискотек, много свободных мест на пляже, а на улицах редко встречаются толпы прохожих.

литературе мыс Греко на Кипре называют по-разному. Чаще всего на греческий манер его величают Каво Греко или Капо Греко. Мыс удачно расположен между двумя курортными городами, Айя Напа и Протарас. Однако подчиняется он муниципальному ведомству Айя Напы. Мыс находится на расстоянии всего семи километров от города. Многие путешественники берут напрокат горные велосипеды или квадроциклы и отправляются вверх на мыс, любуясь местны-
ми ландшафтными красотами и встречающимися на пути растениями. Живописная природа мыса богата разнообразием флоры и фауны. Тонкий аромат цветов и чудесная красота будут преследовать туристов на протяжении всего путешествия. Скалистый обрыв завораживает видом и привлекает своим пейзажем, поэтому этот мыс очень любят романтики и многие гости Кипра выбирают это место для своей свадьбы. Церковь Agioi Anargyroi, находящаяся на мысе, является одним из популярнейших мест Кипра. Но далеко не всех туристов привлекают свадьбы на мысе Греко. Кипр — рай для любителей экстремального отдыха.

ВЕ ЛИЧИЕ ПРИРОДЫ С целью получения небывалого экстрима у туристов очень популярны прыжки в воду с двадцатиметрового обрыва. Морские пещеры, расположенные на мысе Греко удивляют своим видом. Одна из береговых пещер напоминает раскрытую пасть акулы, за что ее по праву и назвали «Акульей». Она устрашающе раскрывает пасть полную острых каменных зубов и встречает подплывающие корабли, как бы показывая, что не даст эти места в обиду. В других пещерах, по преданию, пираты прятали свои награбленные богатства. А судя по количеству дайверов у берегов мыса Греко, можно сделать вывод, что многие в эту легенду верят и до сих пор пытаются разыскать припрятанное золотишко в подводных каменных замках.

ПЕРВАЯ ГЛАСИТ, ЧТО ОНО ПРЕДСТАВЛЯЕТ СОБОЙ СМЕСЬ МОРСКОЙ СВИНЬИ С ДРАКОНОМ. СОГЛАСНО ВТОРОЙ ЛЕГЕНДЕ, ЧУДИЩЕ ОПИСЫВАЮТ В ОБРАЗЕ ПОЛУЖЕНЩИНЫПОЛУСОБАКИ, КОТОРАЯ НАПАДАЛА НА КОРАБЛИ И УБИВАЛА МОРЯКОВ. СЕЙЧАС МЕСТНЫЕ ЛЮДИ НАЗЫВАЮТ ЧУДИЩЕ «ФИЛИКО ТЕРАС», ЧТО ОЗНАЧАЕТ ДРУЖЕСТВЕННЫЙ МИРНЫЙ МОНСТР ИЛИ ОБИТАТЕЛЬ, КОТОРЫЙ НЕ ПРИНОСИТ ВРЕДА. НИКТО НЕ ЗНАЕТ, ДЕЙСТВИТЕЛЬНО ЛИ СУЩЕСТВУЕТ ЧУДИЩЕ, НО НЕКОТОРЫЕ МЕСТНЫЕ ЖИТЕЛИ ИНОГДА ПОКАЗЫВАЮТ ФОТОСНИМКИ, НА КОТОРЫХ, КАК ОНИ УТВЕРЖДАЮТ, ЗАПЕЧАТЛЕНО КИПРСКОЕ ЧУДОВИЩЕ ПО КЛИЧКЕ «СЦИЛЛА».
Мост грешников
Еще одна уникальная достопримечательность острова — «мост грешников», официальное же название — Kamara tou Koraka (в дословном переводе с греческого «воронья арка»). Эта арка — висящая над водой скала, которая выглядит как настоящий мост. В центре которого хорошо видна трещина, созданная природой. Из-за высокой опасности разрушения территория вокруг природной достопримечательности огорожена, и проход закрыт, что, впрочем, не останавливает любителей ярких фотографий. По местной легенде, мост разрушится в тот момент, когда на него ступит нога самого большого грешника на земле.
Национальный парк Капо Греко
На территории мыса Греко расположен Национальный лесной парк «Капо Греко», где все желающие могут самостоятельно исследовать окрестные пешеходные маршруты и достопримечательности. Парк занимает огромную территорию и может предложить туристам различные виды развлечений и времяпрепровождения начиная от прогулки по живописным местам

Цифры и факты 1. Парк занимает площадь 384,9 га. 2. Из 36 разновидностей орхидей, растущих на острове, большинство встречаются именно в парке Капо Греко 3. Национальный парк включен в природоохранную программу «Natura 2000» Европейского союза. 4. Береговая линия залива Коннос Бэй, протяжностью в 200 метров и шириной в 35 метров, покрыта золотистым мелким песком.

Имеется в парке и смотровая площадка и зона для пикника, что делает отдых в парке приятным, комфортным и незабываемым. С северной стороны мыса Греко расположен один их самых знаменитых пляжей Кипра — Коннос Бэй и Голубая Лагуна, получившая свое названия благодаря ярчайшему голубому цвету прибрежных вод. Гуляя по парку можно выйти к храму Афродиты, а поднявшись на самый верх перед вами развернется великолепная панорама средиземного моря, а вдали можно увидеть город-призрак — Фамагусту. ■
