Sofia Kovalevskaya Performance Note Sofia Kovalevskaya was written in Glasgow in January of 2014, for treble reed instrument, violoncello and two pianos. The piece should last approximately six minutes, and should be performed without a conductor. Notated rhythmic values should be interpreted as durations. These durations (including rests) are intended merely as suggestions, and at no time should a pulse be felt. Rests and ‘silences’ may be extended in a particularly reverberant space. All sounds should be very quiet, and should be completely without vibrato. The treble reed instrument part is written in concert pitch and may be performed by any instrument capable of producing the notated pitches (e.g. Bb clarinet, alto saxophone, oboe). The lower octaves of each of the piano keyboards should be depressed throughout to allow those strings to resonate freely. The violoncello should use a mute throughout. Harmonics are notated where fingered. Each sound should ideally be played in one bow. Performers may arrange themselves anywhere in the performance space so long as each can see and hear the others.
