CHILDRENS PLAYGROUND

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The studio project calls for the design of a compact vertical building in the dense urban context of the Sydney CBD. Located on a narrow site on Clarence Street, the building is to host two architectural programs that will be assigned randomly from the list below. The intention is for the project to be conceived as a ‘conversation’ between the two idiosyncratic and not necessarily compatible architectural programs—in line with the focus of the studio on ‘communications’. Much like a conversation between two people, the communication between the two programs might be convivial or fraught, cooperative or confrontational. The programs might each hold to their own and remain completely separate, they might partially overlap, or they might even become entirely integrated. In any case, they must be conscious of, and respond to each other in a deliberate and carefully considered manner, and come to an accommodation in an architectural project that is imaginative, conceptually rigorous and technically adept.
