THE “O” HOUSE PROJECT DESCRIPTION

SITE PLAN

P roj ec t : House O Y ea r : 2007 Lo c at i o n : Chikuracho Kotsuto, Japan ARC H ITECT : Sou Fujimoto Architects Designed for a couple that intended to use it as a weekend getaway, then settle permanently in the future. The site is a rocky stretch facing the Pacific Ocean. The freeform-ness derives from the cliens’ desire to have their home permeated with the presence of the ocean. Fujimoto achieves this effect through an arrangement of rectangular blocks, as independent as they are connected. Borrowing the logic of a tree branch, the plan accommodates all programs within one continuous space. All concrete and inscrutable

SINGLE HOUSE 03

A single house project inspired by nature

DIAMOND BRANCH PROJECT DESCRIPTION

SITE PLAN

P roj ec t : Diamond Branch C L IENT : Sou Fujimoto and Wife Lo c at i o n : Urban suberbia M ANI F ESTO : Branching The principle concept manifesto that this project revolves around is branching. The idea was to utilize this concept of branching and creating a house using the voids created by the branching. Generally, branching is visualised as being rooting out in a two dimensional manner. However, this project extends on this by creating a branching system which roots in a three dimensional manner, branching up and down & right and left.

CLIENT

DESIGN CONCEPT Designed for Sou Fujimoto and his wife, the cleints intend to use it permanent house. The freeform-ness derives from the clients desire to have their home permeated with the presence of the close interation with nature and the community. This is achieved through an arrangement of branching corridors and the void, as independent as they are connected. Borrowing the logic of a tree branch, the plan accommodates all programs within one continuous space and continues branching to the roof which is accesible to the public and from the inside of the house.

DESIGN APPROACH

CIRCULATION The owners of the house have dynamic access to the interior and exterior spaces of the house. This diagram highlights the circulation paths in which individuals of the community move around

SUNLIGHT Multiple entry points for sunlight including a large walkable glass panel on the top. Openings in the side of the house of the hills allow the interior spaces to be bright
