Foreword

RE:DEFINE 2014

JOYCE GOSS & KENNY GOSS We are truly honored to be the chairs for the third annual MTV RE:DEFINE and to introduce the new dynamic partnership between The Goss-Michael Foundation, the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, and Dallas Contemporary. Over $1.8 million has been raised since the inaugural MTV RE:DEFINE held at The GossMichael Foundation in 2011. Once again, the MTV Staying Alive Foundation is bringing international awareness to the forefront of the deadly but preventable HIV. We are proud to be a part of this remarkable effort that began sixteen years ago with the award-winning documentary hosted by George Michael and now has become the world's biggest

mass-media HIV awareness campaign targeted at young people. We look forward to continuing to help the MTV Staying Alive Foundation achieve their vision of an HIV-free generation. We are longtime supporters of Dallas Contemporary, one of MTV RE:DEFINE’s beneficiaries tonight, and its dedication to student art and education programs that provide the means for every student to learn. This is a crucial mission in today’s challenging social and economic climate. This evening, with your help, we will underwrite the brilliant enterprise of young people around the

world in their fight against HIV and AIDS as well as champion the vital art and education programs for youth and adults in our community. Our sincere gratitude goes out to the brilliant artists, generous sponsors, valued patrons and supportive host committee for their continued generosity. And to our advisory chairs, Jessica Nowitzki and Anna-Sophia van Zweden, we are extremely grateful for their passion and enthusiasm, all in support of two causes we care for so deeply. Introduction

RE:DEFINE 2014

THE FUTURE TENSE With the debut of MTV RE:DEFINE in 2011, Paul Missing and I worked with the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and The Goss-Michael Foundation to bring something different to the traditional art benefit. We wanted to deliver an event with a nod to the rebellious, avant-garde ‘rock ’n’ roll’ sensibilities that characterised early MTV, whilst ensuring that the resulting exhibition and gala remained ‘fine art’ in nature. We wanted to create something with the integrity of an institutional exhibition, which contributed to the local community, and that the artists and galleries could be proud of being involved with beyond simply the money raised for the cause. We knew from our first

visit that Dallas was the perfect home for a project like MTV RE:DEFINE, and the overwhelmingly positive results from the previous events has helped shape our thinking for future iterations. Fast forward to 2014, and the chance to work with an institution like Dallas Contemporary brings with it a whole new range of opportunities, challenges and pressures. A dramatic increase in the number of artists involved makes the thematic consistency achieved in previous years orders of magnitude more complex, and yet thanks to a combination of the groundwork done in previous years plus the decades of experience in the team, we are confident that both collectors and the

public at large will be surprised, challenged and engaged by the artists and works on offer. We are very much looking forward to working with Peter Doroshenko and the rest of the Dallas Contemporary team, and of course Richard Phillips’ involvement in the music on the night will further help to cement MTV RE:DEFINE as the most exciting event of its kind on the art calendar. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation

RE:DEFINE 2014

GEORGIA ARNOLD I’ve been at the helm of MTV Staying Alive for over 15 years and I’ve witnessed many changes in the HIV landscape during this time. We’ve seen effective HIV treatments turn what was once a death sentence into a manageable disease. However, the threat of HIV stills looms large, especially now that it has found a new ally—complacency. People are starting to let their guards down when it comes to this disease.

Alive joined forces with one of its greatest supporters, The Goss-Michael Foundation. Together we created MTV RE:DEFINE—an art-auction with a difference. What made this event truly unique was that all of the funds raised were channeled directly into the fight against HIV. This year, Dallas Contemporary has also joined forces with us to help us deliver an even more spectacular event.

enabled us to reach millions of young people around the world with life-saving HIV-prevention messaging. I truly believe that the best way to communicate with young people is through young people. That’s why MTV Staying Alive invests in the young leaders around the world, so that they can go into their communities and teach their peers how to protect themselves against HIV infection.

To take on a global threat like HIV and to protect the millions of young people who are at risk of infection, we need our own allies, and in 2011 MTV Staying

To date, MTV RE:DEFINE has raised over $1.8 million for MTV Staying Alive and our global fight to protect young people against HIV. MTV RE:DEFINE has

Aiming to significantly increase visitor traffic and to attract growing and more diverse audiences, Dallas Contemporary’s exhibition program encompasses work by a variety of artists from the local emerging to the international blockbuster. Innovative learning programs, which appeal to a wide range of audiences, further reinforce our position. While sustaining an established North Texas audience, Dallas Contemporary proudly maintains its international position as the largest

non-collecting contemporary museum of its kind in North America. With a strong team and active board of directors, we are well on our way to forging an amazing future for Dallas Contemporary. By strengthening and developing income streams and delivering a creative and innovative exhibition program, we will further our long-term financial stability. I encourage you to browse and invite you to bid on the array of unique and enticing auction items including curated art, luxury fashion and exclusive travel packages. The intersection of art and rock ‘n’ roll

RE:DEFINE 2014

RICHARD PHILLIPS My inspiration for MTV RE:DEFINE is based on my love of rock’n’roll and its strong connection with art beyond the limits of established culture. Since MTV RE:DEFINE benefits the MTV Staying Alive Foundation I wanted to unite anew the presence of pure rock’n’roll with MTV and art in a way that draws a connection with its founding spirit. When it comes to the unity between rock’n’roll and art the Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol remain the ultimate examples.

When I was approached to curate the music for this year's MTV RE:DEFINE event it was in the lineage of the Velvets that I immediately thought of the band Starred, whose authentic embodiment of all that is rock’n’roll is resetting the terms of this generation’s music. Thinking further to those who occupy the vaunted position of icons of hardcore rock’n’roll, Jennifer Herrema of the Black Bananas and formerly of the Royal Trux came immediately to mind.

I invited Jennifer to perform at MTV RE:DEFINE with her partner Kurt Midness, thinking that with Black Bananas and Starred in tandem we could create an evening where ground destroying rock’n’roll provides the energy to inspire change through philanthropy and open up creative channels much in the way that the MTV Staying Alive Foundation does for the communities it serves. RE:DEFINE 2014

MICHAEL CRAIG-MARTIN LCD PORTRAIT COMMISSION

During the late '60s and '70s, Michael Craig-Martin established a reputation as one of the leading British conceptual artists, and is considered a key figure in the emergence of the Young British Artists in the early '90s, having lectured the likes of Damien Hirst and Gary Hume whilst teaching at Goldsmiths College in London. The winning bidder will join an exclusive group of distinguished collectors, including the Countess of Burlington (the future Duchess of Devonshire) and Zaha Hadid – the former for inclusion in the collection at Chatsworth House and the latter commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery – to have the artist create a computerized digital portrait of up to 2 people.* Working from high-resolution digital photographs, the artist will create a 2-dimensional portrait of you in his internationally recognized iconic style. The final work consists of custommade hardware using a 52" monitor, mounted vertically to hang like a framed painting. The software for the piece divides the portrait into nine different areas of color: skin, hair, lips, teeth, eyebrows, shirt, etc.

Each of these areas slowly and independently fades through a palette of 44 colors chosen by the artist. Each color appears for between five and 15 seconds. As there is no loop, no tape, and no CD or DVD used in this work, there is no repetition. The computer portrait is 'live' – programmed to randomly make all decisions concerning color choice and duration. As there are millions of possible combinations, there is virtually no possibility that anyone will ever see again the exact combination visible at any given moment, and thus the work is rendered transient and elusive. Value: Priceless Starting bid: $100,000 49.5 x 29.5 x 4 6/8 in *Please note that the price is for one portrait. However the artist has kindly agreed to donate a second commission to allow the opportunity for a joint portrait for you and a friend, partner etc. Please note that the price for the second commission will be the same as the winning bid for the first, should you choose to go ahead.

RE:DEFINE 2014

Profile

THE MTV STAYING ALIVE FOUNDATION The MTV Staying Alive Foundation’s mission is to stop the spread of HIV among young people before it starts. We have a two-pronged approach to HIV prevention: we produce ground-breaking mass-media campaigns that deliver vital HIV-prevention messaging to a young audience worldwide, while funding and training young leaders around the world so that they can deliver locally relevant HIV-prevention projects in their communities.

Today, MTV Staying Alive is the world’s largest global HIV-prevention media campaign aimed at young people. Our programming consistently reaches hundreds of millions of households across the globe, in 100% of the top 50 countries most affected by HIV. Since the establishment of our grant-giving programme in 2005, we have given out 488 grants in 66 countries distributing nearly $4.5m and reaching hundreds of thousands of young people at a community level.

RE:DEFINE 2014

MOVE AHEAD WOMEN, INDIA Move Ahead Women works in rural areas of Kerala State, India, to educate and inform school girls and young women about HIV prevention through peer-to-peer education. Many factors discourage women and girls from using health services—these services are often too expensive for young people to access, especially young women, and are not available to unaccompanied minors and unmarried women. A combination of social and economic factors put young women at heightened risk of HIV infection. In 2013, Move Ahead Women reached over 10,000 college girls with their activities helping to raise awareness of HIV and also improve access to HIV-prevention services for girls and young women.

MTV Staying Alive Projects

MOONLIGHT LADIES, KENYA Everlyne, founder of Moonlight Ladies, and a former commercial sex worker launched the Young Empowered Ladies project with the support of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation. As part of this project, commercial sex workers are trained to become educators and counsellors; lead HIV awareness and prevention and referral services; and develop alternative livelihoods. Many young people are attracted to the opportunities that large towns in Kenya have to offer. Some young, vulnerable girls who migrate to these towns can easily end up in commercial sex work and are at high risk of becoming infected with HIV. The stigma and irrational fear that surround the sex trade mean these commercial sex workers have no HIV/AIDS education or access to reproductive health services. Between 2011 and 2012, Moonlight Ladies reached over 3,000 women and over 2,500 men through their public outreach work. They have distributed over 30,000 condoms and have encouraged sex workers and their clients to practice safer sex.

TERMS + CONDITIONS

RE:DEFINE 2014

GUIDE FOR PROSPECTIVE BUYERS

BIDDING IN THE SALE

The Staying Alive Foundation and Dallas Contemporary are referred to collectively hereafter as ‘The Hosts’, ‘We’, ‘Us’, ‘Our’.

Bidding at Auction

Bidding Online

Payment

Bids may be executed during the auction in person by paddle, via the Internet or by telephone, or prior to the sale in writing by absentee bid. Proof of identity in the form of government-issued identification will be required, as will an original signature and a pre-authorization of your credit card. We may also require that you furnish us with a bank reference.

MTV RE:DEFINE will support online silent auction bidding until 11 PM CT on Friday, April 4th. Online bidding on live auction lots will conclude at 3 PM CT and will be transferred as starting and proxy bids for the live auction that evening.

Buyers are required to pay for purchases immediately following the auction unless other arrangements have been agreed in writing in advance of the sale. Winning bidders will receive full payment details from Paddle8 upon completion of the sale.

Visit http://paddle8.com/auctions/redefine to view the catalogue and sign up to place bids online.

Collection

Conditions of Sale The Conditions of Sale which appear later in this catalogue govern the auction. Bidders are strongly encouraged to read them as well as the Terms and Conditions of Business at http://paddle8.com/about/terms as they outline the legal relationship between The Hosts and the buyer and describe the terms upon which property is bought at this auction. Buyer’s Premium There is no buyer’s premium payable on any of the lots. Sales Tax

Bidding in Person To bid in person, you will need to register for and collect a paddle before the auction begins. All lots sold will be invoiced to the name and address to which the paddle has been registered and invoices cannot be transferred to other names and addresses. Please do not misplace your paddle. In the event you lose it on the night, inform a staff member immediately. At the end of the auction, please return your paddle to the registration desk.

There is no sales tax payable on any of the lots.

Bidding by Telephone

Pre-Sale Estimates

If you cannot attend the auction, you may bid live on the telephone with one of our staff members.

Pre-sale estimates are intended as a guide for prospective buyers. Any bid within the high and low estimate range should offer a chance of success. However, lots may also achieve prices below or above the pre-sale estimates. Condition of Lots Unlike most art in a commercial auction, all works included in this benefit sale have been sourced directly from the artist studios and their galleries, and the majority are brand-new works exhibited here for the first time. As such, the condition of each lot is ‘as the artist intended’ unless otherwise specifically noted. However, we encourage all prospective buyers to inspect the property at the pre-sale exhibition and recommend, particularly in the case of any lot of significant value, that you retain your own restorer or professional advisor to report to you on the property’s condition prior to bidding. If a lot is sold framed, The Hosts accept no liability for the condition of the frame. Pre-Auction Viewing Pre-auction viewings are open to the public and free of charge. Our specialists are available to give advice and condition reports at viewings or by appointment.

AFTER THE AUCTION

Bidding Increments Online silent auction bidding increments increase at the following intervals: Below $1,000: $50 Between $1,000 and $1,999: $100 Between $2,000 and $4,999: $200 Between $5,000 and $9,999: $500 Between $10,000 and $19,999: $1,000 Between $20,000 and $49,999: $2,000 Between $50,000 and $99,999: $5,000 Above $100,000: $10,000 The auctioneer may vary the increments during the course of the live auction at his or her own discretion.

It is our policy to request proof of identity on collection of a lot. A lot will be released to the buyer or the buyer’s authorized representative when The Hosts have received full and cleared payment and we are not owed any other amount by the buyer. We reserve the right to levy industry standard removal, interest, storage and handling charges on uncollected lots. Loss or Damage The Hosts accept liability for loss or damage to lots for a maximum of five days following the auction. Transport and Shipping

This service must be arranged at least 24 hours in advance of the sale and requires a pre-authorization of your credit card. Telephone bids may be recorded. By bidding on the telephone, you consent to the recording of your conversation. We suggest that you leave a maximum bid in advance, which we can execute on your behalf in the event we are unable to reach you by telephone or the connection is lost during the call.

Please note that we do not provide packing, handling or shipping services directly. However, we do have a partnership with a reputable handling and logistics company who can provide preferential rates for works purchased as part of this event. We will coordinate with shipping agents instructed by you in order to facilitate the packing, handling and shipping of property purchased at this sale.

To register for telephone bidding please email benefit@paddle8.com with MTV RE:DEFINE in the subject line.

Export and Import Licences

We recommend that you download Paddle8’s free iPhone app from the App Store. You’ll be able to register, bid, monitor auctions, and follow specific works directly from your phone.

Before bidding for any property, prospective bidders are advised to make independent enquiries as to whether a licence is required to export the property from the United States or to import it into another country. It is the buyer’s sole responsibility to comply with all import and export laws and to obtain any necessary licences or permits. The denial of any required licence or permit or any delay in obtaining such documentation will not justify the cancellation of the sale or any delay in making full payment for the lot.

CONDITIONS OF SALE The Conditions of Sale set forth below govern the relationship between bidders and buyers on the one hand, and The Hosts on the other hand. All prospective buyers should read these Conditions of Sale as well as the Terms and Conditions of Business at http://paddle8. com/about/terms carefully before bidding. 1 INTRODUCTION Each lot in this catalogue is offered for sale and sold subject to: (a) the Conditions of Sale (b) additional notices and terms printed in other places in this catalogue, including the Guide for Prospective Buyers, and (c) supplements to this catalogue or other written material posted by The Hosts in the saleroom or at http://paddle8.com/auctions/redefine, in each case as amended by any addendum or announcement by the auctioneer prior to the auction. By bidding at the auction, whether in person, through an agent, by written bid, by telephone bid, by online bid or any other means, bidders and buyers agree to be bound by these Conditions of Sale, as so changed or supplemented. These Conditions of Sale, as so changed or supplemented, contain all the terms on which The Hosts contract with the buyer. 2 BIDDING AT AUCTION (a) The Hosts have absolute discretion to refuse participation in the sale. All bidders must register for a paddle prior to bidding, supplying such information and references as required by The Hosts and/or Paddle8. (b) When making a bid, whether in person, by absentee bid or on the telephone or Internet, a bidder accepts personal liability to pay the purchase price, plus all other applicable charges unless it has been explicitly agreed in writing with The Hosts before the commencement of the auction that the bidder is acting as agent on behalf of an identified third party acceptable to The Hosts and that we will only look to the principal for such payment.

3 CONDUCT OF THE AUCTION

5 REMEDIES FOR NON-PAYMENT

(a) The auctioneer has discretion at any time to refuse any bid, withdraw any lot, re-offer a lot for sale (including after the fall of the hammer) if he or she believes there may be error or dispute and take such other action as he or she deems reasonably appropriate.

Without prejudice to any rights the seller may have, if the buyer without prior agreement fails to make payment of the purchase price for a lot in cleared funds within five days of the auction The Hosts may in our sole discretion exercise one or more of the following remedies: (i) store the lot at the buyer’s sole risk and expense; (ii) cancel the sale of the lot, retaining any partial payment of the purchase price as liquidated damages; (iii) charge interest at 12% per annum from the date payment became due until the date the purchase price is received in cleared funds or (iv) commence legal proceedings to recover the purchase price for that lot, together with interest and the costs of such proceedings.

(b) The auctioneer will commence and advance the bidding at levels and in increments he or she considers appropriate. In order to protect the reserve on any lot, the auctioneer may place one or more bids on behalf of the seller up to the reserve without indicating he or she is doing so, either by placing consecutive bids or bids in response to other bidders. (c) The sale will be conducted in US Dollars and payment is due in US Dollars. (d) Subject to the auctioneer’s reasonable discretion, the highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer will be the buyer and the striking of the hammer marks the acceptance of the highest bid and the conclusion of a contract for sale between the seller and the buyer. Risk and responsibility for the lot passes to the buyer. (e) If a lot is not sold, the auctioneer will announce that it has been ‘passed’, ‘withdrawn’, ‘returned to owner’ or ‘bought-in’. (f) Any post-auction sale of lots offered at auction shall incorporate these Conditions of Sale as if sold in the auction. 4 PAYMENT (a) Unless otherwise agreed, a buyer is required to pay for a purchased lot immediately following the auction regardless of any intention to obtain an export or import licence or other permit for such lot. (b) Title in a purchased lot will not pass until The Hosts or their nominated processing partner has received the full purchase price for that lot in cleared funds. The Hosts are not obliged to release a lot to the buyer until title in the lot has passed and appropriate identification has been provided, and any earlier release does not affect the passing of title or the buyer’s unconditional obligation to pay the purchase price.

6 LIMITATION OF LIABILITY (a) Subject to sub-paragraph (e) below, the total liability of The Hosts and our affiliated companies to the buyer in connection with the sale of a lot shall be limited to the purchase price actually paid by the buyer for the lot. (b) Except as otherwise provided in this Paragraph 6, neither The Hosts or any of our affiliated companies (i) is liable for any errors or omissions, whether orally or in writing, in information provided to prospective buyers by The Hosts or any of our affiliated companies or (ii) accepts responsibility to any bidder in respect of acts or omissions, whether negligent or otherwise, The Hosts or any of our affiliated companies in connection with the conduct of the auction or for any other matter relating to the sale of any lot. (c) All warranties express or implied, including any warranty of satisfactory quality and fitness for purpose, are specifically excluded by The Hosts and our affiliated companies to the fullest extent permitted by law. (d) Subject to sub-paragraph (e) below, neither The Hosts or our affiliated companies shall be liable to the buyer for any loss or damage beyond the refund of the purchase price referred to in sub-paragraph (a) above, whether such loss or damage is characterized as direct, indirect, special, incidental or consequential, or for the payment of interest on the purchase price to the fullest extent permitted by law.

(e) No provision in these Conditions of Sale shall be deemed to exclude or limit the liability of The Hosts or any of our affiliated companies to the buyer in respect of any fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation made by any of us or in respect of death or personal injury caused by our negligent acts or omissions. 7 COPYRIGHT The copyright in all images, illustrations and written materials produced by or for The Hosts relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalogue, is and shall remain at all times the property of The Hosts, and such images and materials may not be used by the buyer or any other party without our prior written consent. The Hosts make no representations or warranties that the buyer of a lot will acquire any copyright or other reproduction rights in it. 8 LAW AND JURISDICTION (a) The rights and obligations of the parties with respect to these Conditions of Sale, the conduct of the auction and any matters related to any of the foregoing shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware. (b) For the benefit of The Hosts, all bidders and sellers agree that the federal courts within the State of Delaware are to have exclusive jurisdiction to settle all disputes arising in connection with all aspects of all matters or transactions to which these Conditions of Sale relate or apply. All parties agree that The Hosts shall retain the right to bring proceedings in any court other than the federal courts within the State of Delaware. (c) All bidders and sellers irrevocably consent to service of process or any other documents in connection with proceedings in any court by facsimile transmission, personal service, delivery by mail or in any other manner permitted by the laws of the State of Delaware, the law of the place of service or the law of the jurisdiction where proceedings are instituted at the last address of the bidder or seller known to The Hosts.
