BANNENBERG & ROWELL DESIGN

DICKIE BANNENBERG AND SIMON ROWELL

“From the perspective of interior design, the field widens hugely with craftsmen and women out there able to tackle anything a designer can imagine.”

Bannenberg & Rowell is an award-winning superyacht design studio based in Fulham, the direct descendent of the Jon Bannenberg studio established in the early 1960s. Headed by Dickie Bannenberg and Simon Rowell, the studio is renowned for its creative, contemporary and approachable design – both in interior and exterior. In addition the team undertake residential, aircraft and furniture design. We had the pleasure of catching up with Dickie Bannenberg, who revealed that his father used to say that nobody needs a yacht. However, Dickie looks at his work as a position of amazing privilege, because “as a designer you are creating something bespoke for clients who are accustomed to the very best.” The designer admits that the studio has no typical client. “But they are connected by seeking progressive and interesting design. Some have a pretty advanced idea of what they want, others less so, and look to us for setting out the design map.”

When it comes to yacht trends, Dickie believes that “there is an unmistakable momentum towards creating better exterior spaces which interact with the sea. Think balconies, terraces, beach clubs. Elsewhere, glazing technological advances allowing larger windows and more natural light. At a certain size of yacht, you might see thick glass panels in the hull, above and below the waterline.” Regarding craftsmanship, Dickie admits that the custom yacht industry supports many craftsmen, artisans and specialists. “From the perspective of interior design, the field widens hugely with craftsmen and women out there able to tackle anything a designer can imagine.” The studio has won multiple World Superyacht and International Superyacht Society awards and was included by Architectural Digest in their Top 100 Designers. Yacht projects have been completed at almost every leading yard, including nine new builds at Feadship, seven at Heesen and projects at Abeking & Rasmussen, Lürssen, Benetti, Trinity, Baglietto, Palmer Johnson and Admiral Technomar. For the future, the designer expects an equally diverse nature of yacht design due to the diverse range of clients, claiming that “explorer yachts are certainly becoming more prevalent. You could say that privacy is the new luxury and in that sense, owners like to venture further afield, away from the rather familiar waters of the Cote d’Azur and Caribbean. For my part, I’d like to see a much deeper environmental commitment on the part of everyone involved in yachting. Tighter standards, tougher regulations and a pivot away from some of the materials viewed as rare and luxurious finishes.”

KEN FREIVOKH

KEN FREIVOKH DESIGN

Working from his studio based on the River Hamble on the south coast of the UK, superyacht designer Ken Freivokh actually started life as an architect. Raised in Los Angeles, he studied engineering and architecture in Peru before moving to the UK to study at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1972 with a Masters in Design. It was while working as an architect that Freivokh first encountered yacht design, and as an experienced sailor it was when buying his own yacht – and asking for some changes to be made – that he started to make the transition to the industry.

“There will always be a role for bespoke craftsmanship, even in the most simple and minimalistic designs, and such skills are essential and reflect the quality and intricacy of the design.”

Today, Ken Freivokh Design is a multi-disciplinary team renowned for creating unique “out of the box” design solutions. Among the most relevant list of core services that this form provides, aside from interior design, we can include external styling, project management and supervision, as well as CAD and 3D design. The company has these services applied to luxury yachts as well as to other projects of architecture, residential interiors, private jets and industrial design. The innovative design team’s methodology involves a careful analysis of the client’s brief, examination of first principles, lateral thinking and formulation of very special designs, always aimed at raising the bar of excellence. Freivokh himself revises himself in those feature, and has stated that designing yachts is definitely his lifelong goal and and achievement.

“Designing yachts combine my fascination and life long involvement with design, with my love of yachts. There is amazing scope for innovation, combining technical issues with space and aesthetic treatment, offering the opportunity to create a floating ‘world’ with its own individual and unique character. “ Perhaps most famously, Ken Freivokh design the exterior and interior of US venture capitalist Tom Perkins’ superyacht Maltese Falcon, at 88 metres notable for its innovative Dynarig and still one of the largest private sailing yachts in the world. That is set to change with the Freivokh-designed superyacht Dream Symphony, a striking 141 metre contemporary wooden schooner that is currently under construction at the Dream Ship Victory yard in Turkey. Some of Freivokh’s most relevant vessels can also include high performance yachts such as Leopard and Ocean Phoenix and also some more classic yachts such as Atlantide, Spada, Saga and Sycara. When it comes to the type of clients that Ken Freivokh Design usually has under their wing, they all have one thing in common: success. The designer stated this word ad a common denominator for the customers, seen as they have achieved notorious success each of them within their particular sphere of activity. Thanks to the victories in their career and in their lifetime, they are people that dream high and manage to achieve that very same vision. That matter also ends up being a factor that, for Ken Freivokh, defines a lot of the features of many current yacht owners. “I find that current yacht owners are more prepared to accept innovation, and to allow designers to create a yacht which is totally unique and personal, and expression of the owners tastes and interests.” When it comes to projects, aside from some aforementioned superyacht designs, Freivokh has also had a series of relevant collaborations with several production yacht builders which includes names such as Sunseeker and Discovery Yachts. Aside from developing several interior design styles with these two companies, Ken Freivokh has also developed tender designs with Pasoe. In all of his work it’s evident that quality and bespoke craftsmanship has a relevant role in the quality that is reflected on each of his company’s projects, and the designer knows this.

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 35.

“There will always be a role for bespoke craftsmanship, even in the most simple and minimalistic designs, and such skills are essential and reflect the quality and intricacy of the design.” It’s very evident that Freivokh, alongside his team, throughout many years have been responsible for the creation of a variety of stunning yacht exteriors and interiors. The studio has gained a reputation very notable for showing a common element to their projects: cutting edge and often futuristic concept designs. However, the designer stated that he believes that the industry can still move forward a lot faster through the adoption of other more creative and advanced design methods. He believes that the designers in the industry are more than ready to take on the challenge of adapting to that change, and it’s only a matter of preparing the other groups inserted in the community for this eventual change. “I believe that yachts could still move forward adopting more creative and advanced techniques, three dimensional structural solutions such as space frames and geodesic structures, much greater use of structural glass to achieve amazing panoramic views from all key areas of the yacht. The designers are ready, the owners can be made ready, the shipyards have to brace themselves to be ready!”

“There will always be a role for bespoke craftsmanship, even in the most simple and minimalistic designs, and such skills are essential and reflect the quality and intricacy of the design.”

MARK TUCKER

DESIGN UNLIMITED Mark Tucker is a man with an over 30-year-old-experience in the yacht interior design world, being also known for projects such as the 64.68-metre Shemara, 53-metre Mirage and 46.2-metre Pink Gin VI, as well as for being the creator and managing director of another relevant company within the industry: Design Unlimited. This company was created precisely in the beginning of the new millennium and it quickly became a turning point in Mark’s career. He had the previous advantage of having worked for two major players within the yachting community: he was involved with Camper & Nicholsons (Yachts) Ltd as an interior design specialist and also within Ken Freivokh Design as an associate partner. Thanks to these previous jobs, he earned a valuable reputation for his “fresh” interior and exterior design stylings in the production of yachts and superyachts, be them either sailboats or motorboats. When it comes to the remarkable projects of the studio we can indicate their take on vessels such as Visione, Sojana and Pink Gin V, as well as some relevant projects for companies such as Sunseeker International as well as Bavaria Yachtbau. The team of this incredible design firm has been awarded with some relevant awards such as the ShowBoats Best Refit award for Elisabeth F, and a World Superyacht Awards commendation for Karia. JONNY HORSFIELD H2 YACHT DESIGN Jonny Horsfield is the Owner and Creative Director of the prestiged company H2 Yacht Design, considered as a veteran among the yachting industry. Jonny started giving his first steps within the area after having graduated from Coventry University in a period during which he studied car design. Ironically fate would lead him away from cars and approach him to the wonders of superyacht styling. This happened due to his first professional experiences which have allowed him to work alongside Martin Francis, and then spending five years under the professional wing of Donald Starkey. After having created H2 Yacht Design, during the first steps of the business they’ve worked mostly on superyacht refits. In 2005 a new opportunity came forward for the company with a proposal of working on the interior design of the 54 metre Proteksan superyacht Talisman C. This would be the

company’s first new-build, and an event which would propel them into trying the areas of exterior styling and interior design of many amazing luxury yachts. Jonny has five key factors that he still takes into account while doing his job in approaching design: creating a relaxing ambience, focusing on functionality and flexibility, and cost effective solutions, while maintaining the highest quality and using the most exquisite materials for a quality job. Among some honors H2 Yacht Design has received throughout the years, we can definitely point to the ShowBoats Design Award they’ve won in 2013 thanks to their take on the interior layout design of Proteksan superyacht Vicky. Aside from some bespoke luxury vessels, the firm has also been involved with the interior design of several private residences.

ANDREW WINCH WINCH DESIGN

“It’s great when the client is fully involved and there is a creative dialogue between them and our designers as it means that we are able to understand their dreams in their entirety.”

Specialising in interior and exterior yacht design, Andrew Winch started in Jon Banneberg’s pioneering yacht design studio in 1980 having been mentored by the legendary designer as a student. After six years, Winch set out on his own, forming Andrew Winch Designs in 1986 with his wife, Jane. In 2015 the firm was re-branded as Winch Design.. The Winch Design Yachts Studio has been established for over 30 years and is currently led by Jim Dixon. Alongside interior design and exterior styling for luxury yachts and yacht refits, Winch Design also has an architecture studio since 2009, with a team of around 30 architects and interior designers and an aviation studio that, since 2002, has expanded its portfolio with an array of aircrafts and helicopters. When it comes to their work, according to Jim Dixon, the current Director of Yachts and Aviation at Winch Design, he loves the flexibility and variation that comes every day with every new challenge they are handled. They have a habit of nurturing and and developing each of their client’s individual dreams until it culminates in a final result that can be seen as a milestone for the team and the client. The team adores seeing their clients’ reactions. “The knowledge that everyone’s hard work has yielded something entirely unique and above all, technically faultless and beautiful, is a wonderful and very proud moment for us all.”

Speaking of their type of clients, most of them are billionaires, many of whom come from industries such as fin-tech and e-commerce. Aside from looking for something unique and suiting for their lifestyle, they are very detail-oriented in their vision of a dream yacht. The team at Winch Design has a good habit of getting to know their clients, more specifically their tastes, preferences and habits, and from there initiate a collaborative conversation which will be an essential base step towards achieving an incredible final result. “It’s great when the client is fully involved and there is a creative dialogue between them and our designers as it means that we are able to understand their dreams in their entirety.” The team shares a passion for delivering designs imbued with the Winch ethos for beauty, uniqueness and perfect proportion. The work created by the Studio over the last 33 years speaks for itself and current projects continue to push boundaries and expectations of design. They’ve also managed to create some relevant relationships with many of their suppliers, each of them being a master in their own craft. Craftsmanship, for that matter, is a matter that the team gives a great amount of emphasis to, seen as they invest in it for the final results. When it comes to trends in the yachting world, Jim points to the increasing popularity that explorer yachts are gaining throughout this period. According to him, these vessels have features such as robust hulls, higher crew capacity and superior storage space, alongside with the fact that are vessels equipped with the tech, durability and propulsion power which allows the owner, guests and crew to enjoy travels across a variety of extreme environments. As a matter of fact Winch Design has been working on three projects directed toward that sense, seen as these yachts are taking over many sea lovers. “Clients are expecting a flow and consistency between their spaces on land and at sea and want their yachts to be multi-functional and capable of functioning in the same way as a home on land. Some clients are choosing to spend extended periods of time on board, some are even choosing to live permanently on board. “

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 43.

When it comes to some possible changes in the yachting industry, Jim Dixon predicts a dramatic change in the superyacht industry in this upcoming decade. There are a series of rules which are being applied to help the the move towards carbon neutral methods of propulsion, in order to help control the levels of pollution in several areas at risk. He predicts a huge increase in Hydrogen fuel Powered Yachts, a type of vessel which will be protected from loss of value and produce no harmful emissions, as well as a resurgence of interest in sailing yachts, which are boats that can be very luxurious, and also help on the ecological matter. In Norway, for that matter, certain fjords have banned combustion fuelled liners and yachts from entering in a bid with the goal of eradicating the high levels of pollution detrimental for the local environment. Jim manifests a hope that the yachting community will start to turn to discussions regarding ecological and sustainable matters through which the boating industry can help protect the environment.

“I would like to see other luxury industry leaders promoting the conversation about sustainability, publicly supporting and financing conservation charities as well as making small changes from the bottom to the top. “

STEVE GRESHAM GRESHAM YACHT DESIGN

He was always very noticed thanks to his particular sketching and drawing abilities, as well as his sharp understanding of 3D form, which he can easily manage to create some of the most amazing models seen in the yachting industry in the present. Regarding current yacht trends, the designer says that “looking at the interior, we are seeing more requests for large open spaces and relaxed, easy to maintain interior finishes.” Steve Gresham is the creator of Gresham Yacht Design and a good example of a person who’s had a long background of experience which would culminate in his initiative of creating his own business within the boating area. Ironically, his path didn’t begin in the boating industry alike many other top players in the industry, but now his favourite part about his work is “the process of translating an owner ’s ideas onto paper and to see that idea grow and develop”. According to the designer, the typical yacht client is “varied and comes to us from all over the world. While there is much we could share about them, we take their privacy very seriously and can’t discuss anything about them, except to say that they are very successful. If it weren’t for these individuals, our industry would cease to exist and with it, hundreds of thousands of jobs. They play a crucial role in the superyacht market and beyond.”

When it comes to craftsmanship, Steve Gresham believes that “the role of craftspeople in our market is very important. Without the specialist tradespeople we have within our industry, the yachts you see today just wouldn’t have been possible. We work with a number of interior outfitters and artisans that are able to translate our drawings and ideas into reality in ways that wouldn’t otherwise be viable.” For the future of the yacht design world, Gresham says it is a “very slow-moving sector and so changes take a long time”. Since the world is focused on sustainability and being environmentally friendly, the designer believes that “we are likely to see more design ideas that revolve around new technologies to achieve these goals. It would be good to see more superyachts fitted with equipment that can help clean, map and monitor the health of our seas, coral reefs and ocean life, in a bid to help improve all of it for future generations.”

MARTIN FRANCIS FRANCIS DESIGN

Martin Francis can definitely be considered as a veteran in regards to luxury yacht designing. After being a Furniture Design graduate of Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London, he started a bespoke career in the design industry all the way back in 1988, which he successfully maintains to this day in the luxury yacht design area. After graduation, one of the most notable parts of his professional path led him to work with architect Lord Norman Foster for 20 years, after which he founded the construction and engineering firm RFR (known for being a pioneer of the the use of glass walls in architecture) alongside Peter Rice. However, his work was able to adapt to other different areas, including luxury yachts seen as he’s known for being the mind behind some notorious superyachts, among them being the vessel Senses, and the most notorious Enigma (now known as Zeus, previously renamed

Katana and Enigma, for Emilio Azcárraga), which was first delivered all the way back in 1991. Aside from naval architecture, Martin is very passionate about other subjects such as photography and fine arts. His present company, Francis, Design Consulting Ltd., specializes in both the design and architecture of many superyachts, relying on a unique vision and technology. Thanks to his varied and complex professional background the designer knows how to handle a variety of styles in regards to the architecture and interior design of a project. Martin himself has stated that he finds an advantage in not being formally trained in boating design, seen as it allows him to have a similar approach to any problem, treating the matter as a pure “design problem”.

GO BY H2

DESIGN

The exterior design of GO was in essence an evolution of My Vicky, the previous 73m collaboration between H2 and Turquoise yachts launched in 2012.

The soft lines and distinguishable midship arch and balconies are somewhat of a trademark feature recognisable in other designs. This stunningly beautiful yacht is as equally impressive on the exterior as she is on the interior. There is an increased level of attention to detail not typically seen on vessels of this size, especially on the exterior deck furniture, where maintenance is a concern. The fluidity and continuous lines of the exterior styling are harmonious with the yacht’s natural environment, resulting in a truly holistic design. There is a uniqueness and individuality to areas of the exterior superstructure; from the open aft corners of the swim platform to the distinctive square design of the gym, with its tubular polished stainless decoration flanked by symmetrical stairs up to the sun deck. The bold turquoise hull reinforces a connection with the sea and this colour theme carries through onto a number of the loose exterior deck furniture pieces, reinforcing the narrative from the interior. With massaging water jets and outdoor TV, the pool location offers unrivalled views from this elevated position. The ‘piece de résistance’ is a cleverly disguised waterfall integrated into the forward part of the mast, providing entertainment for all ages. These are the details that make it a truly unique vessel.

WATCHES Baignoire Allongée by Cartier The Baignoire is a watch of many faces. Born in Paris in the late 1950s, its perfect oval shape underwent a transformation in 1960s Swinging London, stretching its forms to adorn women’s wrists with a mix of elegance and extravagance. Renamed Baignoire Allongée, it continues to prove that nothing succeeds like excess, when in expert hands. Its latest asset? A pink gold bezel whose sculpted spikes borrow from Cartier ’s, one of the biggest luxury brands, jewellery idiom and the Clous de Paris hobnail design. Lange 1 “25th Anniversary” by A. Lange & Söhne A. Lange & Söhne, a sounding name in the luxury brands world, made its triumphant return in 1994 with the Lange 1 – instantly recognisable by its large jumping date display and off-centre hours and minutes dial. Twenty-five years on, the brand celebrates the advent of this now iconic watch with a special collection. While the Lange 1’s characteristic design has remained virtually unchanged throughout these years, this edition in white gold stands out for its argenté-coloured dial printed with blue numerals, blue numerals for the date display, and an engraved hinged back that opens to reveal the intricacies of the movement – namely the L121. Star Legacy by Montblanc Montblanc continues to stride forth with a fusillade of new models and a particular focus on ‘vintage’ styles: the new Star Legacy collection, which takes inspiration from the company’s Minerva manufacture and, in particular, its pocket watches from the late 19th and early 20th century, with retro touches including ‘onion’ crowns and stepped lugs. Watch Winders by Boca do Lobo A watch winder is the perfect place to store your most prized possession. These pieces by luxury brand Boca do Lobo feature a contemporary design that combines functionality with a sense of fantasy, with rich colour combinations with gold, silver and black.
