Welcome back. Back to work, back to school, back to college, back to the hum drum. Hope you all had a good summer break. I managed a few days in Paphos; stunning! I refuse to leave the island for my holidays until I get to see everything this beautiful island has to offer first. We Skaliotes (People of Larnaca) are famous for not setting foot outside of Larnaca and I have to say I have been guilty of that myself in the past, but its not for the want of trying. But when there is so much to do in Larnaca its hard to venture out of it. If you don't believe me take a look at the Larnaka Municipality's events page for September.

We have dedicated a section to the events and projects of the municipality this month and it really is jam packed with cultural events such as opera, theatre and folk music. Proposed future projects to improve the Town are on the way with detailed information about when they are to commence and the areas to benefit from the face lift will be featured in our next issue. Another thing I have learned recently is that the municipality refer to themselves as Larnaka Municipality with a 'K', therefore in such cases we have complied with their request to keep said spelling.

I would also like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone that sent in emails, passed on messages and called us to say thank you and well done for producing our best issue yet. I would like to convey all these kind words to my team and thank them for their amazing efforts. I trust we will be as informative, if not more so, this issue. Happy reading!

World News UK Riots

Y

ou will most likely have heard that pandemonium struck parts of England from 6th August as riots spread across the country in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and other areas. David Cameron has recently stated that the rioters in England will ‘pay for what [they] have done’ after over 3000 arrests, with over 1000 from London alone and over 1000 being charged. Of course in Cyprus we are many, many miles away, but so many of us have families that were involved.

Our eye witness told LN how over 30 people from various different shops along the road banded together to ‘protect’ their businesses because they did not feel there was enough ‘protection' given by the police.

“Eventually my business partner had to go home to his family and when it got to 6 a.m. in the morning I had had enough too. I had to make a decision, and from all the phone calls from friends telling me about the violence happening everywhere, I decided that it wasn’t worth the risk,” he said. “I called a friend, told him I wanted all our stock out of the shop and into a secure lock up, and I needed it done there and then.”

With so many shops and business chains looted across England, the damages and insurance claims have totalled hundreds of millions of pounds. With that in mind it seemed an astute decision by the shop owner to remove his stock straight away.

“It was probably one of my best business decisions ever,” he commented. “Only a mile down the road is a centre full of shops and they were all looted by these people. And just down the road from that is another shop selling similar goods to us and he was looted for over £200,000 in stock.”

Our anonymous witness told LN that he closed the shop with the lights on and left bits littered around the floor and shelves before restocking and reopening the shop five days later after the ‘country had calmed down.’

The consequences of the riots that ravaged England for four days and nights can still be seen in the burned out shells of shops and homes. Not only that, but the economy was dealt a blow in a time when things are already shaky and maybe worst of all people’s lives were destroyed; the riots ended with deaths on some rare occasions. The riots have been directly connected to five deaths and sixteen injuries whilst the rioters battled from city to city against a struggling UK police force. The riots have since instigated furious debate amongst top figures in the UK over why the riots occurred, how they were dealt with by the police and the Government, and what effects it will have on the country if something is not done to prevent similar events in the future. LN spoke to an eye witness of the crimes perpetrated by so many in North London.

He said, “What you’ve seen on the TV and internet isn’t even the half of it. It’s so much worse.”

Asked about the effects that riots had on his business and if his business was targeted he replied quite positively. “To be honest we were lucky with the decisions we made and the security we have in the shop.”

He continued after explaining his business, informing us that his clothes shop’s alarm went off just after midnight and he rushed to his shop with his business partner to find ‘kids’ trying to break through the metal shutter.

Disaster Strikes Cyprus: Accidental Annihilation

I

t was the worst peacetime military ‘accident’ ever recorded in Cyprus. Continually described as a military accident in the news, there are however many differing opinions that exist in Cyprus on exactly what happened and why. Certainly many believe it to be ignorance that led to the explosion on July 11, 2011 and a lack of responsibility on the part of the high ranking officials in the country.

The explosion at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base near Zygi killed 12 people instantly and injured 62, with one dying later from his wounds, and included the death of Cyprus’ Naval Commander Andreas Ioannides. It will go down in history as a preventable disaster that severely damaged the island in a time when businesses and people alike were already finding it tough in a world of troubled economies.

And the disastrous aftermath didn’t stop there. The explosion knocked out the island’s largest power station that was responsible for half of the country’s electricity supply and resulted in the resignation of many top Cypriot officials, including the Cypriot Defence Minister and the Commander-in-Chief of the Cypriot National Guard.

Demonstrations swept the island from the very next day, mainly in Nicosia and Limassol where people can still be seen until 5 and 6 in the morning outside the Presidential Palace, showing the displeasure, disappointment and, in many cases, anger of the populace.

After the devastating explosion, Cyprus requested

aid through the European Civil Protection Mechanism asking for foreign electricity generators to help with the burden of the 50% loss in electricity across the island. An assessment team was deployed to Cyprus to gauge the situation and Cyprus received the generators so badly needed over the strenuous weeks following the blast, thanks to the assistance of the Greek Public Power Corporation. Rolling blackouts across the country were certainly not helping the financial state of the island and it is a blessing that 24 hour electricity is back up and running.

Over the course of the aftermath to the blast, Cyprus did relatively well to sustain electricity to the main tourist areas so as to have a minimal effect on one of the biggest contributors to Cyprus’ economy, tourism. All businesses were requested to limit their use of air conditioning units to try and minimise the strain on the overloaded power plants and generators, and with the help of the public, Cyprus seems to be coping well with the disruption, at least for the foreseeable future. Going Green Energy Explained

Energy; it encompasses everything we do and everything that we are. In Cyprus we have recently discovered just how much our country depends on electricity after the disaster on July 11 that took out the largest power plant on the island.

Energy consumption across Europe has rapidly been given greater and greater attention by Governments and the EU, but the main concern, discussed for many years now, is our reliance on fossil fuels and rising CO2 emissions (over 90% of Cyprus’ total energy consumption is oil-based).

Cyprus has recently put a lot of effort and money into successfully producing wind farms capable of producing a portion of the island’s required electricity. Solar Water Heaters have long been used in Cyprus and over 90% of homes now have them installed (the highest in Europe), but larger Solar Photovoltaic panels (PV) are not used to their potential. Bearing in mind that, according to www. greenpowergroup.org, solar radiation level averages in Cyprus are up to 2000 KWh/m2, one of the highest in Europe, it is a wonder why a major chunk of Cyprus’ electricity is not powered by the sun and other renewable sources. The use of PV in Cyprus 14 I LN Magazine

is helped by grants provided by the Government; however it is also hindered by the Government at the same time. Cyprus subsidies for renewable energy systems, specifically in the case of PV, can be as high as 55% of the eligible costs, with maximum monetary caps in place. However, due to ‘bureaucratic delays’ with these grants being produced, people tend to steer away from choosing PV in the construction of a building. The real problem arises when you see other countries in Europe with similar solar radiation levels as Cyprus, such as Portugal, install a solar power plant in 150 acres of land at the cost of €58 million, to provide over

8000 homes with electricity and save over 30,000 tons a year in greenhouse gas emissions.

Currently Cyprus has a feed-in tariff, a policy mechanism designed to accelerate investment in renewable energy technologies, for large wind power plants.

This resulted in the production of Cyprus’ first wind farm at the end of March 2011, at a cost of roughly €170 million, which will reportedly produce 8% of the country’s required electricity, a big step towards

meeting Cyprus’ national target of 13% of total Energy Consumption by 2020 and already meeting the target of 6.8% of total Electricity Consumption by 2020.

As you can see from the above, Cyprus has great potential for using renewable energy, but can that potential be reached?

LN hopes Cyprus can achieve and surpass its renewable energy targets for 2020, and until it does there are many ways that you can still save energy (and money) in your own home. LN Magazine I 15

Here are some energy saving tips just for you: Heating in Winter: ►If you do use heating during the winter months in Cyprus, try to make sure the heating goes off 30 minutes before you leave your home and turns on 30 minutes before you expect to return. This is one of the most efficient ways to save money on heating without spending any more money on gadgets and gizmos, and applies to timing your air-conditioning units as well. ►Turning the thermostat down by just 1 degree can save you nearly €50 a year, so do it! ►Draught proofing can help too.

Water ►Regular showers can use 40% less water than having a bath. It might not be as relaxing, but there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself to a bath only once a week and showering the rest of the time. ►When boiling water in the kettle, don’t put in more water than you’re actually going to need. ►Use washing machine programmes relative to your wash loads. Half loads should have a half load programme and wash full loads whenever possible.

Electricity ►Change the lights in your home to Energy Saving light bulbs. They were at one time given out for free at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (AIK) offices, so try there first if you plan to change your bulbs. They are cheaper to run and last longer. ►Turn off your household appliances, such as TVs, Microwaves, Kettles, Toasters, the Oven and Hob, Computers, Sound Systems, Air Con Units, etc. This is a must if you want to save on your bills. These appliances can use anything between 5% and 30% power on Standby Mode. ►Use your air-conditioning units only when you have to. It is obviously difficult to not use them at all in Cyprus, especially in the sizzling summer, but bear in mind they use a lot of electricity and could cost between €3 and €7 to run one A/C unit for 24 hours.

Use your timers wisely and make sure the A/C units are fully switched off when you leave your home. ►Don’t leave the fridge door open for too long and avoid putting hot or warm food in it as this requires more energy for the fridge to stay at the correct temperature. ►And lastly, surprisingly, many modern dishwashers actually use less energy and water than washing up by hand!

As you can see, we as individuals can contribute to saving energy by being more aware of the energy that we use. In a WWF energy report (www.energy. eu), James P. Leape, Director General of WWF International, states that he believes by 2050 ‘we could get all the energy we need from renewable sources.’ What do you believe?

LN Featured Interview Beat the Recession LN spoke to a CTO official to find out exactly how the Cyprus Tourism Organisation has coped with the recession and its strategies over the past year to encourage tourism to our beautiful island.

Q. From a business perspective what have you observed that has occurred in the market place as a result of the recession?

A. Consumers are now careful and selective with their spending and decision making process and consider their options more thoroughly before making a decision on what choice is best for them to spend their money on.

Q. What changes in consumer confidence & spending habits have you noticed?

A. People compare value for money and the quality of the service or product on offer. They are sensitive as a result of the crisis and are definitely more conservative.

Q. What impact has this had on your business?

A. For the CTO there has been NO impact, we have had a good year. For example: From the UK tourist holiday makers market place there has been an obvious drop in the numbers visiting Cyprus in the past few years, which has been due to the pound (ÂŁ) exchange rate. This declining trend level has now been stabilised.

On the other hand other market places such as Russian visitors have dramatically improved with a 50% increase of numbers inbound to the island. The Russian tourist market also falls into our top 1 or 2 categories of high spenders.

Q. What strategy have you implemented to combat the effects of the recession and changes in consumer spending?

A. We have kept prices stable and most importantly not made them any more expensive, especially with this recession and with consumer spending behaviour during these times.

We have implemented 2 key elements into our marketing and business strategy: a. We have invested a lot of finance into attracting new airline companies, ones of low cost flights and destination routes. Not just for inbound flights, but also to give people on the island of Cyprus the opportunity to easily visit other destinations at low cost. We are still working on new flights and other available routes as well as making them more frequent. b. We have also worked very closely with Tour operators increasing our levels of co-operation and support to bring even more people into Cyprus; not just focusing purely on the summer season, but also opening up and increasing traveller numbers during the winter period of November through to April.

Q. How did your advertising campaigns and budgets change as a result of the business plans you have put in place to beat the recession?

Our Marketing and Advertising spending dramatically dropped in budget to an extent of â‚Ź20 million.

As a result we had no option but to reduce some of our key activities and focus on a specific market sector: countries with a proven track record of high levels of travel and spend. We have 3 market categories – high, medium and low with all of our budgets and efforts currently solely concentrated into our high market category group.

In the future when the market place regulates we will return to working and promoting into all the three high, medium and low sectors to continue to improve awareness levels of Cyprus as a choice destination to visit. To work on changing the classification of people from countries classed in the lower category and convert them to a higher level, goes hand in hand with continuing to increase the number of visitors to the island and the amount of spend.

Q What results have you achieved as a result of this strategy?

We have had a good year. We have increased visiting tourist levels by 12% and revenue by €250 million; 17%.

Q What would be the best advice you could give to other businesses?

Quality - Invest in Quality – do not try to save money by cutting back in service levels or increasing costs to the consumer.

Consumers are demanding and comparing quality, value and what they get for their money. A crisis can easily prompt businesses to look at trying to save money and cut costs. This would be the worst thing to do where the reputation of the business and establishment could be damaged.

Do not be afraid to spend money investing in advertising, quality products and service levels. Use special promotions, low cost, etc., to attract customers old and new, focusing your priority on your known consumer group who will spend and buy into your product and service that is on offer to them.

Outcome Figures show that tourism levels are actually up by nearly 12% in total from all countries visiting Europe and tourist arrivals from countries such as Russia, Romania, Czech Republic and Ukraine have all increased by more than 50%. For actual figures, tourist arrivals from United Kingdom numbered over 400,000 and over 130,000 from Russia.

As you can see, CTO have been busy and seem to be coping very well with the economic troubles and there is no reason why your business can’t do the same. One tip they have is to keep up your level of quality; that of your product or service, your reputation and your marketing campaigns.

Give promotions to attract the right consumers to spend money with your business, and focus your advertising so that you are reaching your intended consumer. Don’t just go for something because it’s cheaper. Don’t cut all the way back. Be clever about it. What you spend on advertising should be able to give back a good return either in money, customers, reputation or market share. Larnaca On Mobility: EU-Project PIMMS Capital

T

welve regions in Europe, some of which have already worked together in projects with PIMMS and PIMMS Transfer came together for good practice exchange and the capitalisation of mobility management ideas for transport such as bus lanes, bicycle lanes, traffic systems, etc. The 17 partners have identified fourteen good practices that will be exported between the regions, a total of 32 imports.

This project runs under the INTERREG IVC programme for 26 months. INTERREG IVC supports the coherence of Europe through interregional cooperation and transfer of knowledge and PIMMS Capital will produce an Action Plan for each region, setting out how the key stakeholders will commit to adopting the selected good practices. The project started in October 2010 and is funded by the European Commission with €1.4 Million.

The PIMMS Capital objective is to stimulate modal shift towards more sustainable forms of transport by increasing the implementation of high quality mobility management techniques and policies in European regions, and thus capitalise on the experience of PIMMS and PIMMS Transfer. This will involve an extensive range of related stakeholders at municipal and sub-regional level and involve other sources of good practice and expertise, notably other EU-funded projects demonstrating how Mobility Management adds value to the ERDF-funded capital investment in ‘hard-works’, especially Public Transport in Convergence regions.

Each partner in this project has identified local or regional specific problems which could be solved by PIMMS Capital. This includes the development of Public Transport, Mobility Management solutions, new approaches to IT based information, passenger 24 I LN Magazine

safety and promotion of sustainable Mobility.

The practices are ‘Bus Priority Corridors, Bicycle Lanes, Park and Ride' and a 'Traffic Monitoring System’.

Delegations from the Municipality visited Limerick, Ireland in May 2011 and Frankfurt, Germany in June 2011 where they were briefed by local experts on the good practices. An import workshop is scheduled for mid October 2011 in Larnaca where experts from the two regions will explain and elaborate, to local stakeholders and key decision makers, on the implementation of the good practices in Larnaca.

It is worth noticing that during the Ireland visit, Larnaca and its policies and actions on the promotion of sustainable Mobility was presented at a National conference in Dublin in the presence of the Irish Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation.

16-22nd September: European Mobility Week

S

ince it began in 2002, and every year since, from the 16th until the 22nd September, hundreds of cities across the whole of Europe take part in the European Mobility Week; the largest global event dedicated to sustainable mobility within a city. The aim of the week is to encourage local authorities to promote alternative solutions to cars, and to highlight their positive consequences for public health and the environment.

The excessive use of vehicles in cities, especially of private cars, creates many problems for the health of the residents. Among these are the injuries and deaths which are caused by traffic accidents, respiratory infections and diseases from the atmospheric pollution, as well as chronic diseases, such as obesity and heart diseases which are due to an increase in an inactive way of life. In terms of the fat-related risks for physical and mental health, these include social isolation and the fragmentation of society, which cause traffic congestion and the restriction of public space, as well as sound pollution, which in turn induces sleep disorders and stress.

The aim of the Mobility Week is to change the physical behaviour of the public, offering eco-friendly, alternative solutions to the usage of cars. It gives the public the opportunity to taste alternative methods of transport, while providing the local authorities with the chance to test their transport and infrastructure policies. Also, it is a chance for the participating cities to prove how much environmental issues concern them, and for the residents to show their support, through their interest and involvement, for a better life in their urban environment.

Larnaka Municipality, due to its participation in European Programmes that revolve around the theme of sustainable development, places particular importance on this initiative, and has participated continuously for the last eight years with a rich programme of activities for the whole duration of the week. This year, therefore, the Municipality will build on the experience gained from previous years to push for more effective actions, which will contribute to the gradual change in behaviour of the residents and the adoption of the alternative methods of transport, as recommended by this year’s Mobility Week theme.

A meeting held recently at the Municipality (with the aim of coordinating the efforts for the organisation of the events for the Mobility Week), was attended by members of the European Commission, the Press and Political Correspondent of the European Commission in Cyprus, Mr. G. Heliopoulos, who expressed his satisfaction at the overall efforts of the Municipality in terms of sustainable mobility. He informed the attendees of the intention of the European Commission to organise this year’s main events for the Mobility Week in Larnaca.

The Mayor of Larnaca invites all citizens to take part in this year’s scheduled events for the Mobility Week, which will include cycling trips and a bike ride in the city, cycling competitions, lectures, cycling demonstrations, exhibitions, drawing competitions at various points in the city, etc (relevant information will be posted on the internet website of the Municipality: www. larnaka.com).

The Ministry for Communications and Works, in cooperation with the Environmental Department are coordinating the events for all the Municipalities and Communities, and have agreed that Saturday, 17th September will be a day of free transport by bus in the city.

Larnaca has all the prerequisites to become an easily accessible city by alternative methods of transport, and to offer to its citizens the pleasure and satisfaction of making transport in the city enjoyable, healthy and safe.

Years of History: On the 7th of October Larnaca Nautical Club celebrates 60 years since its creation.

T

he roots of Larnaca Nautical Club go back to 1934 when sailing began in Larnaca. The founder was the then Larnaca harbourmaster, the late Paul Rossides (also known as Captain Paul).

He designed a small sailing boat 16 feet long with a mast and two triangular sails, the big sail was type "Bermuda" and the smaller sail jib. He then instructed Dimitras Skeparnidi, a local boat builder to construct the vessel.

The boat was named 'Mersin'. Within 6 weeks the vessel was built, equipped and ready to sail proudly into the blue waters of Larnaca Bay.

Around the same time the then British deputy director, Kordingkton Smith, of the Telegraph, a 26 I LN Magazine

Larnaca newspaper of the time, was preparing a similar boat to 'Mersin'. Once ready, the two sailing boats began competing in friendly races almost every afternoon in the waters of Larnaca bay.

From 1936 onwards races were organised with a prize of a pennant, or blue tape of Larnaca.

The 'Mersin' was then bought by Andreas Evriviades Wideson who renamed it 'Argo', and who then sailed every day in the summer around the bay of Larnaca.

In the following years with the exception of a small break during the second world war, races continued in the bay of Larnaca.

After the second world war in 1947 Paul Rossides designed a new and improved version of the 'Argo', with Dimitri Skeparnidi once again as the builder.

From 1947 to 1950 Dimitri Skeparnidi and Antonis Kyriakides continued building boats, until there were approximately ten vessels taking part in races at the time.

In the late 1940s early 1951 the decision was taken to officially establish the Club and it was named 'Larnaca Nautical Club Flamingo'. The logo was designed by Renos Evryveiadis (Wideson). It depicts a flying flamingo and the colours were deep blue, white and red. The Club became an official member of the International Yacht and Sailing Clubs Association and the first President was Paul Rossides, alongside Vice-President Dimis Demetriou and Secretary Andrew Evryveiadis (Wideson).

Regattas were organised on the weekends and the citizens of Larnaca enjoyed watching the exciting races. The organisation of the games did not go unnoticed by the Cyprus government, who then decided to give the Club a building, the now Foreign Immigration and Cyprus Police building, as well as a small dock at the Salt Lake. With the club firmly

established in their first building, regattas were organised continually; sometimes the British soldiers even took part. In the winter of 19521953 after a torrential rain storm the Salt Lake overflowed and the opportunity was taken up to organise races throughout the winter months.

As the years went by the club moved around to many different locations and had several Committees and presidents. The club has endured a lot of hard times, but because of the voluntary work provided by the dedicated club members with their strong love of sailing and sponsorship from a few generous individuals and companies, the Club continues to flourish today.

Larnaca Nautical Club is currently situated on the Larnaca Dhekelia road.

Our Club offers many different sports for the young generation and our goal is to teach the children what a sports activity can offer.

Exercise is important in an era of television, computers and computer games; sports help to get kids moving again. Organised sports can help children develop important social skills and they learn to socialise together. Sports offer a fun way to learn about taking turns and following rules. For children of all ages, sports provide important lessons in how to work as a team and be a 'good sport' whether they win or lose and children come to understand that practice, patience and persistence are an important part of life. At present the Club offers Sailing, Canoeing (Kayak), Swimming, Water Polo and is currently working to establish Windsurfing and Triathlon teams. LN

Larnaca Regeneration: Kition Buried Treasure

The Geography of the Ancient World made Kition an important Trading post into Europe. The Ancient empire was smelting metals with much of the very precious gold and copper passing through Kition into the rest of the world. Cyprus itself was the most famed source of copper; indeed the Romans called the island Cyprium, which literally means copper.

The regeneration of Larnaca includes a new set of excavations, which will initially be under the tennis courts of Larnaca, opposite the AEK fans' club.

What lies beneath the ground could be a treasure of ancient knowledge and artifacts. The discovery of precious metals and pottery as well as the remains of the ancient structures are enough to give us an idea of how the ancient people lived.

There is a large museum there today with much of the site partially excavated, which has yielded large vases, on display in and around the museum. There is also a little known park to tourists within a short walk from the site, which is sign posted as Kition.

The Archaeological park is open to the public and has a large site, which displays the majority of a footprint of a building complex with the base of the walls of the ancient structures intact, enabling us to understand the scale of the buildings of antiquity.

The regeneration will provide visitors with a change to their routine from beach combing to experience the rich historical heritage Larnaca has to offer, a stone's throw from the Finnikoudes promenade. A new museum and Archaeological park has been proposed with a completion date scheduled for 2013.

PGA Golf & ATP Tennis: Tersefanou & Alethriko

Larnaca is scheduled to tap into the long established professional golf tourist market, with a new 18-hole par 71 golf course, which will be Cyprus' only PGA standard golf course.

The project has been suffering delays and doubts, but the developers who have built new housing in the area have kept the pressure on to push the project through as close to schedule as possible. The village is set to be transformed with an elevated club house and training centre, which will provide instruction within a water featured park. It will also provide spa and banqueting, as well as conference facilities. It is due for completion in 2014.

The nearby village of Alethriko is also being developed for sports with a scheduled sports centre to cater for professional tennis tournaments as well as indoor sports.

The new sports centre will be a 5 minute drive from Tersefanou Golf complex. The tennis courts will house 5,000 seated visitors as approved by the International Tennis Federation for world-class tennis tournaments like the ATP 500 and the WTA. There will also be facilities for hockey, basketball, mini football, volleyball, boxing, Olympic standard gymnastics and ice skating within a large scale sports centre next to the tennis courts. It is also due to be completed in 2014.

Some events, such as the “Festival of Classical Music” with international participation, the “Kataklysmos Fair”, the biggest folkloric festival with a duration of six days, the “World Famous Musicals” with authentic productions from the London West End Stage, the “Larnaca Festival” every July and the “European Cultural Winter “ (November – March) featuring famous artists from all over the world, are known beyond the frontiers of Cyprus and attract groups of tourists who combine these cultural highlights with their holidays on the Island.

Octapodi Done Right

Go to a good restaurant, order fresh Octopus (cooked, I don't mean wriggling on your plate) and you'll get food that's tender and tasty. Go to a bad restaurant and you'll get Octopus that's rubbery to the point that you might as well be eating the sole of your boot. That really is how Octopus is. When it's cooked well, it makes for a gorgeous meal. When it's cooked bad, it's horrible.

Greece is famous for beautifully tender Octopus and many Cypriot fishermen have picked up the same tricks of the trade, but do you know how they actually tenderise and prepare an Octopus before throwing it on the grill to cook? If you don't, it's not the most ceremonious event you'll ever read about, but it is enlightening. We at LN decided to find out how it's done from the Editor's relative in Greece, who often helps a friend that frequently catches fresh Octopus and cooks it beautifully.

He said, "To catch them is easy; we just put out some jars in the sea and the next day we check them to see if any Octopuses have made a home in one. If we're lucky, we have an Octopus sitting there waiting for us!"

It's the next bit that the Editor of LN was a bit shocked about, but the rest of us weren't really that fazed. Meat eaters should generally have learned to accept the way their food is created.

The LN relative continued with long winded taletelling and bravado, but the most important part was, "To tenderise a larger Octopus we take it by the head and throw it against the floor or a flat rock. Then we rub it around a bit on the rock to get rid of the slime that comes out. We do this again a few times, because although the Octopus isn't alive, the muscles will still contract.

Once we throw it down and the tentacles just flop and don't contract, we stop, rinse it off and hang it up until we're ready to cook it."

The Editor of LN paled a bit during the story, but that is, according to our new friend in Greece, and probably the Editor's now least favourite relative, the traditional Greek way of tenderising and preparing a freshly caught Octopus! LN 42 I LN Magazine

Octapodi Facts

The well armed octopus has a secret weapon. Concealed in the folds of its body lies a sackful of ink, which the octopus secretes to ward off or confuse its enemies. However, its main defence is to not be seen, either by hiding, or using camouflage.

Octopuses have two eyes and four pairs of legs and make their home generally in a hole or rock crevices in shallow water, particularly in coral reefs and the ocean floor.

Octopuses have a short life expectancy; depending on the species, an octopus can have a natural life expectancy of between 6 months and 5 years. Octopuses actually often have genetically programmed deaths; males can only live for a few months after mating and the females die shortly after the hatching of their eggs. They also, interestingly, have three hearts, show problem-solving skills and the capability for short and long-term memory.

Word Facts Octopus comes from the Greek word Octapodi. Pronounced Ochta-podi, Octo in Greek is eight and Podi translates to leg. Hence an eightlegged creature!

TRADITIONAL RECIPE

For the Enthusiast Halloumi cheese or Halloumi is a traditional Cypriot cheese popular in the Middle East and Greece, and now made in many countries and regions around the world. Traditional artisan Halloumi cheese is made from unpasteurised goats milk, sheeps milk or a combination of the two.

Similar to Mozzeralla the cheese is white, with a distinctive layered texture, and has a salty flavor which is much stronger, saltier and drier when left to age in brine solution. Halloumi is often garnished with mint to add to the taste, but traditionally this was added as a preserve.

The Halloumi cheese is made with only two ingredients: goat milk and rennet.

The lack of cultures causes this cheese to be rather bland, and mint leaves are used to impart flavour to it.

Some modern recipes also call for the addition of a mesophilic starter culture to add more flavour.

Method: Warm the milk to 90°F. Add the rennet to the water, and stir into the milk. Continue to stir for 30-60 seconds to distribute the rennet evenly.

Let the milk rest for 10-15 minutes until the surface has gelled. You can check for gelling by lightly touching the surface of the milk with the flat side of a small spoon. If the spoon leaves an indent, it has gelled.

Multiply the amount of time until surface gelling by 2, and wait that much longer before cutting the curd into 2″ pieces with a long knife.

Let the curd pieces rest for a further 10 minutes, then cut them into smaller, 1/2″ pieces. And finally let the smaller pieces rest for 10 more minutes. Now, stir the curds gently for 10-15 minutes to encourage the whey to separate.

Pour the curds into a cheese cloth-lined colander placed over a pot (you will be using this pot of whey later), and let it drain for several hours until no whey is left standing with the curds.

At this point, you can add about 1/2 tsp. chopped mint into the curds, or wait and place mint inside the folded pieces of cheese at the end of the process.

Fold the cheese cloth over the curds and press with your hands to remove any excess whey and to fuse the curds together. If the curds are still very loose and moist, place a weight on top and continue to let drain.

When the curds are dry enough to stick together well, cut them into approximately 2″ wide strips. Bring the pot of drained whey almost to a boil (around 195°F), and drop in the cheese strips.

Let cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until the strips float to the surface. Remove the strips from the whey, lightly salt each side, and let cool for 1-2 hours.

How to store Halloumi To store the Halloumi, you can make a brine solution of 1/2 cup salt dissolved in 1 quart water. It is traditional to fold the cheese slices in half, making a “U” shape Add mint leaves inside the folded portion), before storing in the brine.

The brine will keep your Halloumi good for several months, and the flavour will increase with storage time.

For Parents: Cooking For Little Ones Cooking for toddlers and growing children presents some unique challenges. While you want to provide them with those ever so important nutrients, it is often difficult to get them to eat those foods that are best for their growing bodies. We are all probably well aware of the food pyramid and the number of servings our children need of healthy grains, proteins, fruits, vegetables, and calcium products. However, getting them to eat these nourishing products is another matter entirely.

The good news when cooking for children is that you do not necessarily need to incorporate all the important nutrients into dinner food.

The truth of the matter is that raw cucumbers, which are thinly sliced and sprinkled with salt make a much healthier snack than potato chips and many little ones love this healthy snack.

You get a vegetable in their system and they are getting a treat at snack time. The same holds true for melon and cantaloupes. These make excellent snacks and are a much-needed fruit in the little ones’ diets.

When it comes to cooking for little ones, however, man, woman, and child cannot live on macaroni and cheese alone. It’s been tried

easier than ever before too. Fresh fruits and vegetables are best whenever possible and luckily there is a great range to choose from in Cyprus. However, if you cannot manage fresh, you should avoid canned fruits and veg (fruits especially as they are often swimming in sugary sweetness) whenever possible. Frozen is far preferable to canned food when it comes to both fruit and vegetables, as there are often fewer additives.

If you need some great meal ideas that are kid friendly and easy on the budget, you can often find recipes readily available in books and online. You can meet your child’s calcium and dairy product needs by adding milk as the drink

It is important that you try to introduce whole grains, proteins, and vegetables whenever possible at meal times in your home. Beauty Tips: Make-Up Application Made Easy

The Four Steps to Flawless Skin 1. To apply perfect looking foundation, start by moisturising well and leaving your skin for 5 minutes or so to allow the moisture to absorb into the skin.

Now prepare your skin by using i - prime, which will allow your foundation to glide on more smoothly and help your make-up stay on all day!

2. Now apply i - perfect foundation. To choose the right colour, test along the jaw line to find a colour that will easily blend with your neck colour and avoid obvious lines. Now apply the foundation area by area starting with the forehead, cheeks, chin then nose.

Start in the middle of each area and blend outwards.

3. For the under eye area use i - conceal fluid concealer. Apply with the built in brush and pat dry with your finger. Apply a little more to any areas that might need more attention like red cheeks or blemishes.

4. For a slightly more matt finish use i - finish loose powder. Apply in light circles along the T-zone with a Large Powder Brush. This will also give your foundation some real staying power.

Creating the Perfect Smoky Eye Look 1. To create dramatic smoky eyes, begin with the i - smoulder pencil in Charcoal. Use the pencil end inside the lower lash to draw a subtle line and blink hard a few times. Repeat this process to build the colour up inside the eye. Now sketch along the top 54 I LN Magazine

lash line. This doesn’t need to be really neat at this point. Now using your finger (or a Small Eye Shadow Brush) blend the eyeliner up over the moving part of the eyelid.

2. Using the eye shadow end of i - smoulder apply the cream eye shadow over the top of the blended eyeliner and all over the moving part of the eyelid.

3. For a more dramatic look use i - shadow in Laguna. With an eye shadow brush apply the darkest colour to the outside corners of the eye and blend inwards through the socket line. Now apply a little of the same colour under the lower lashes. Use the Blending Eye Shadow Brush for a smooth finish.

4. Now apply plenty of mascara.

Tip Smoky eyes can be a very striking look. It works well to use a natural toned lip colour like i - pout in Nudity or i - define in Rosie to maintain the balanced look.

Choosing Eyeliners Choosing the right eyeliner for you can be tricky.

Here is a guide to choosing the right product and application technique to achieve the look that suits you best. i - line is a professional length, triangular shaped kohl pencil. Pencil eyeliners are perfect for a softer smudgier look and can easily be blended using the Angled Eye Shadow Brush. Apply in dots in-between

the lashes for a more natural look or inside the lower lashes to create drama. i - flick is a double ended waterproof liquid liner and pencil. This product is perfect for women who like a stronger ‘flicky’ retro style line. Pull your eyelid slightly to the side to create some tension and then gently draw along the lash line as close to the lashes as possible. To create a flick lift the line slightly toward the outside edges. i - gel is a creamy gel eyeliner that dries to a long wearing finish. It is perfect for blending to create smoky eyes, but will also give an intense line if applied with the i - gel liner brush. For soft smoky lines that really will last all evening, use i - gel along the lash line and blend upwards using a Blending Eye Shadow Brush. For a more intense line, carefully line along the upper lash line with the brush provided and allow to dry.

Beach Camping: Beach Camping can be fun too. It’s a little more out of the way than your back garden of course, but it’s not so far that it should be a big task to undertake. More preparation is needed and you should be taking everything that you could possibly need to camp out on the beach. There are of course two options though in Cyprus. Thousands of people all over the island each year take to the beaches with their tables and chairs, quiet music, night lights and barbecues. They enjoy a night full of song and stories

and then when everyone is full and fatigued, they head home for a good night’s rest, waking the next morning with some funny stories of the previous night.

However there is also the option of going to a designated beach campsite where you can pitch a tent on the beach and sleep there overnight. The prices are cheap too; you can pay anything between €1 and €6 per person per night. Some things to take, include: pillows and sleeping bags for those not accustomed to hard ground; insect repellent (a definite must unless you have an unusual attraction to bug bites); a small gas camping stove for heating up your food (baked beans are a camper’s bread and butter, although bread and butter is nice to bring along too!); plenty of drinking water to sustain you through the day and some plastic/paper plates, cups and cutlery along with a rubbish bag to put them in; as well as sun screen to protect your precious skin from UV rays. As a note for camping enthusiasts, the Cyprus Forestry Department has 3 campsites open all year round (though the extra facilities are likely closed during the winter) if you prefer a forest camping trip. Tech Tips: Automating Photo Editing at Home...

G

et rid of that time consuming hassle that occurs after every bout of photo taking. Even many professionals don’t realise that a common concept back in the MS-DOS days of computers is still usable today to automate editing pictures on your Computer for printing later on.

If you ever used MS-DOS you might remember that to perform a function you would have to type in a command including all of the directory paths until you got to the file you wanted. As you can imagine, if you had to do this every time, it would be rather bothersome. Thus the inception of batch files. The batch files contained these commands on their own lines so that executing the batch file would then prompt all of these commands at once; nice and simple.

Of course this was not required once Windows’ point and click Operating Systems came along, but batch files are still used for various computer tasks today. And this is where photo editing comes into play. I’ve also got a heads up tip at the bottom for those of you who’ve come back from the photo printing shop upset that you can’t get your pictures printed because they’ve told you the DPI is too low (when in fact they mean PPI(pixels per inch))!

Using the latest Photoshop, which can be downloaded on a free trial basis from their official website, you can automate photo editing using what they have called a Batch, for editing that you regularly do to your pho-

tos. Here are some step by step instructions to help you along the way: 1. First of all, always make backups of your pictures before you edit them because they cannot be replaced if something goes wrong. I can’t stress this enough. I learned the hard way and I’m letting you know so that you don’t have to.

2. Open a photo in Photoshop and then have in mind what it is you want to have automated. It could be changing the resolution of the image, the DPI of the image, lighting, changing RGB to Greyscale, etc.

3. Click on Window at the top and then Actions (or Alt+F9). You’ll have to create the action you want to automate once and then you won’t have to do it again. There are default created actions in this panel, if you’d like to try using those just skip to Point 8.

4. The Actions panel should come up now and here you click the button in the bottom right of the panel to create a new action.

Then name your action, e.g. Lighting, and then click Record.

5. Photoshop is now recording your every click. This is important; only once you click to confirm an action will it be recorded. So if, in my case, I want to make my picture brighter using lighting effects and then press OK, it will be recorded in my new action ‘Lighting’.

6. Once I’ve done that I want to save over my backed up photo (which is a JPEG), so I click File and then Save.

7. And lastly I click the stop button on the Action Panel (next to the currently highlighted record button).

8. Now create a folder and put all the photos you want to perform an automated task on inside it.

9. Now click File – Automate – Batch… then choose your Action, in my case ‘Lighting’. Then I choose the Folder I created with my photos in as my source: Folder and Click OK. Now just watch the magic happen! Photoshop will automatically apply that Action to all of the pictures inside your chosen folder and eliminate all that time that you spend doing the same old task to your hundreds of photos. Enjoy! Motoring Madness MotoGP 2011

he MotoGP 2011 started on the Losail Circuit in Qatar in March 2011 with a 22 lap race that saw Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner come out on top with a thrilling race, finishing 3.440s ahead of reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha Factory Racing. And since then Casey Stoner has put in some great performances and superb effort to maintain his position at the top.

The latest race at Brno again finished with Casey Stoner keeping his position at the top of the 2011 World Standings with an average speed of 164.8km/h on the Czech Republic circuit built with fast corners in mind to test rider talent and bike engineering to the limit.

With that win Casey Stoner rises to a 32 point lead after his victory at Brno, his sixth so far this season, and goes into the famous Indianapolis circuit with wary confidence. Stoner told the press, “You’ve got to put race wins together and a lot of points together to win championships. The way everything’s going, ye, it couldn’t be working out much better.”

Stoner looks good to carry on his excellent year and the rest of the MotoGP calendar is set to be a tough affair. The World Standings before the Indianapolis GP 2011 currently have Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo sitting in 2nd place, 32 points behind Casey Stoner on 186 points, Honda’s Andrea Dovizioso in third with 163 points and Ducati’s Valentino Rossi a way behind in fourth with 118 points.

hen was the last time you cycled?

I’ve always enjoyed cycling.

Maybe it’s because I’ve always had a bicycle, even when I was studying abroad. I remember when we were still children and we only felt free when we rode our bicycles even for the shortest of distances. I am no longer a child but I still feel the same rush every time.

You don’t need to spend a fortune on a bicycle. If you do your proper research and go to the appropriate shops they will help you get the bicycle you need at a price you can afford. It’s the easiest way to exercise without realising it. Every owner of a bicycle shop should know how to help you get back into cycling.

Publish Your Articles in the LN Magazine...

Images At LN we can’t stress enough how important it is to send in pictures along with your articles. No matter how interesting your article, if it doesn’t have a nice layout and good pictures to go with it, then the eyes of our readers won’t be enticed into your great piece of writing. They say a ‘picture is worth a thousand words’, so if that’s the case then I will allow a word limit of 4700 words as long as 4000 of those words are taken up by 4 pictures!

Also read through the magazine for the photo editing article, because unless you send in high resolution pictures roughly 1800 pixels by 1200 pixels at 72 DPI your lovely looking pictures won’t be of a high enough quality for us to print once they have been changed to the correct DPI. If after reading the article, you still can’t manage to change your photos to the correct size and PPI, then send in your pictures and I’ll get our graphic design team to have a look at them and see what they can do, but no promises!

Make it Relevant Keep your articles as up to date as possible.

Articles on current events happening around the world, not necessarily just in Cyprus, will stand a better chance of being published than something that happened two years ago. However if your article is a history piece then by all means send it in and stipulate its historical content.

Just keep it relevant, keep it concise and make it interesting for other people to read.

Have Your Say: A Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, RE: July 11, 2011 We can all agree that July is a cursed month for Cyprus; the coup and the Turkish invasion of 1974; the explosion in July, just to name a few.

This year due to the explosion of July 11, 2011, 13 people died. 61 were injured and an entire nation is mourning. No, let me correct myself, some of us are mourning. The rest still prefer their coffees, maybe not realising that this affects all of us! It's not just the people that died or those who were injured. It's our economy as well. And this for sure affects every single one of us.

The saddest part of all this is that by now, months after the explosion, no one has been or is even remotely close to being punished. One of the things that bothers me a lot is that Larnaca is sleeping.

Either people don’t care or don’t want to show they care. We are the only city that does nothing. Larnaca has only walked twice from the Finikoudes to St. Lazarus church and that’s it. I understand that not everyone can travel to Nicosia or Limassol every night, but I’m sure once or twice a week we can all do it, with people currently staying until 5-6 in the morning.

We, the people that are outside the presidential palace every night, are not there just because it's ‘in fashion’ like some people say. We are not there because we are members of a political party. We come from all backgrounds, are of various ages and would be there no matter who was president. And I repeat that to make myself clear. We would be there no matter who was president! Because, as we say in Cyprus, "Το ψάρι εν που την τζεφαλή που βρωμεί" (The fish stinks from the head).

I was talking with some English-Cypriot friends of mine and they said that they don't feel that they belong there, it's not for them. Talking with other people that are there every night, we all say the same thing, “We are outside the presidential palace and the headquarters in Limassol every night fighting for all of us.” We all live in this country. We all have to live by the rules and regulations. We all pay taxes and bills. If no one is there to say we disagree and are not satisfied by what goes on then what will become of us?

We invite everyone there on Mondays when media attend, since they have been marked as black Mondays due to the explosion. However, if you want to see what really goes on there I would suggest you join us on any other night as well, at least once.

If you think about it though, we should feel proud.

We managed to create the third biggest explosion 70 I LN Magazine

in the history of the world after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki explosions, and the biggest one using unconventional weapons! So I would personally like to thank everyone responsible for actually putting us on the map. No longer will people ask us, 'Cyprus?

All I’m saying is get off your couch. Do something.

Anything! If you don’t know what to do, then join us and we will all think of something to waken our city, and the rest of our country too.

As Cyprus is such a small island, the explosion has affected the majority of the island in different ways and people are coping with it in every way they can. However some people will do more than others and it seems that you are trying to make a difference with your efforts. LN enjoys hearing its readers’ opinions, even over such sad circumstances. It helps us hear and understand what the people of Cyprus think and believe, and shows our readers how you and many others view the country and events taking place. Hopefully many more will be encouraged by you to write in and voice their opinions on this and other recent hot topics in Cyprus.

That was the last day the girls pressed their lips on the mirror.

Now you may think that isn’t very nice, but in actual fact all those insects like mozzies, aphids, flies, etc. that ‘bug’ you in the summer will be eaten if you have a praying mantis nearby. NASA's Wise Mission Discovers Coolest Class of Stars Scientists using data from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) have discovered the coldest class of star-like bodies, with temperatures as cool as the human body!

Astronomers hunted these dark orbs, termed Y dwarfs, for more than a decade without success.

When viewed with a visible-light telescope, they are nearly impossible to see. WISE's infrared vision allowed the telescope to finally spot the faint glow of six Y dwarfs relatively close to our sun, within a distance of about 40 light-years.

The Ys are the coldest members of the brown dwarf family. Brown dwarfs are sometimes referred to as "failed" stars. They are too low in mass to fuse atoms at their cores and thus they don't burn with the fires that keep stars like our sun shining steadily for billions of years. Instead, these objects cool and fade with time, until what little light they do emit is at infrared wavelengths.

Astronomers study brown dwarfs to better understand how stars form and understand the atmospheres of planets beyond our solar system.

The atmospheres of brown dwarfs are similar to those of gas giant planets like Jupiter, but they are easier to observe because they are alone in space, away from the blinding light of a parent star.

So far, WISE data has revealed 100 new brown dwarfs. More discoveries are expected as scientists continue to examine the enormous quantity of data from WISE. The telescope performed the most advanced survey of the sky at infrared wavelengths to date, from Jan. 2010 to Feb. 2011, scanning the entire sky about 1.5 times.

Of the 100 brown dwarfs, six are classified as cool Ys. One of the Y dwarfs, called “WISE 1828+2650”, is the record holder for the coldest brown dwarf with an estimated atmospheric temperature cooler than room temperature, or less than 25 degrees Celsius. The brown dwarfs previously discovered had more or less the temperature of a house oven.

The Y dwarfs are in our sun's neighbourhood, from approximately 9 to 40 light-years away. The Y dwarf approximately 9 light-years away, “WISE 1541-2250”, may become the seventh closest star system, bumping Ross 154 back to eighth. By comparison, the star closest to our solar system, Proxima Centauri, is about 4 light-years away.

Images: Courtesy of Kition Telescope to narrow their list. To definitively Planetarium & Observatory confirm them, the WISE team used some of the most powerful telescopes on Earth to split apart the objects' light and look for telltale molecular signatures of water, methane and possibly ammonia.

For the very coldest of the new Y dwarfs, the team used NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The Y dwarfs were identified based on a change in these spectral features compared to other brown dwarfs, indicating they have a lower atmospheric temperature.

World Space Week 2011 4-10 Oct: 50 Years of Human Space Flight

What is World Space Week?

It is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events:

Astronomy Calendar for September and October 2011 ►October 4, 1957 -- Launch of the first humanmade Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration ►October 10, 1967 – The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

50 Years of Human Spaceflight The theme for World Space Week 2011 is "50 Years of Human Spaceflight."

The first human spaceflight took place on April 12, 1961, when cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made one orbit around the Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft, launched by the Soviet space program and designed by the rocket scientist Sergey Korolyov.

As of 2010, human spaceflight missions have been conducted by the former Soviet Union (Russia), the United States, the People's Republic of China and by the private spaceflight company Scaled Composites.

Several other countries and space agencies have announced and begun human spaceflight programs by their own technology, including India (ISRO), Ecuador (EXA), Japan (JAXA),Iran (ISA) and Malaysia (MNSA).

Currently the following spacecraft and spaceports are used for launching human spaceflights: ►Soyuz with Soyuz rocket—Baikonur Cosmodrome ►Space Shuttle—Kennedy Space Centre ►International Space Station (ISS)—Assembled in orbit; crews transported by the previous two spacecraft ►Shenzhou spacecraft with Long March rocket— Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre Historically, the following spacecraft and spaceports have also been used for human spaceflight launches: ►Vostok—Baikonur Cosmodrome ►Mercury—Cape Canaveral Air Force Station ►Voskhod—Baikonur Cosmodrome ►X-15—Edwards Air Force Base,[4] (two internationally recognized suborbital flights in program) ►Gemini—Cape Canaveral Air Force Station ►Apollo—Kennedy Space Centre (Apollo 7 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station) ►Salyut space station—Baikonur Cosmodrome ►Almaz space station—Baikonur Cosmodrome (Almaz was a series of military space stations under cover of the civilian name Salyut) ►Skylab space station—Kennedy Space Centre ►Mir space station—Baikonur Cosmodrome ►SpaceShipOne with White Knight—Mojave Spaceport As you can see, international collaboration has been key to the success of humans in space.

September 12 - Full Moon. This phase occurs at 09:27 UTC. This moon is also known as the Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the September equinox each year.

September 23 - September Equinox. The September equinox occurs at 09:05 UTC. The Sun will shine directly on the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This is also the first day of fall (autumnal equinox) in the northern hemisphere and the first day of spring (vernal equinox) in the southern hemisphere.

September 25 - Uranus at Opposition. The blue-green planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the best time to view Uranus. Due to its distance, it will only appear as a tiny blue-green dot in all but the most powerful telescopes.

September 27 - New Moon. The Moon will be directly between the Earth and the Sun and will not be visible from Earth. This phase occurs at 11:09 UTC. October 1 – “Astronomy Day”. Astronomy Day is an annual event intended to provide a means of interaction between the general public and various astronomy enthusiasts, groups and professionals. The theme of Astronomy Day is "Bringing Astronomy to the People," and on this day astronomy and stargazing clubs and other organisations around the world will plan special events.

October 4 - 10 – “World Space Week – 50 Years of Human Space Flight”. The KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY is the National Coordinator for Cyprus for “World Space Week”. On this week astronomy and stargazing clubs and other organisations around the world will plan special events.

October 12 - Full Moon. The Moon will be directly opposite the Earth from the Sun and will be fully illuminated as seen from Earth. This phase occurs at 02:06 UTC. This will be the smallest full moon of the year because it will be near apogee, its farthest point from the Earth.

October 16 - Comet Elenin. Newly discovered comet Elenin will make its closest approach to the Earth on October 16. The comet was discovered on December 10, 2010 by Russian amateur astronomer Leonid Elenin. It is estimated that the comet will reach 6th magnitude as it makes its closest approach. This will make it just barely visible to the naked eye. With a good pair of binoculars and a little determination, you may be able to get a good look at this new comet during mid October.

October 21, 22 - Orionids Meteor Shower. The Orionids is an average shower producing about 20 meteors per hour at their peak. This shower usually peaks on the 21st, but it is highly irregular. A good show could be experienced on any morning from October 20 - 24, and some meteors may be seen any time from October 17 - 25.

October 26 - New Moon. The Moon will be directly between the Earth and the Sun and will not be visible from Earth.

This phase occurs at 19:56 UTC. October 29 - Jupiter at Opposition. The giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the best time to view and photograph Jupiter and its moons. The giant planet will be as big and bright as it gets in the night sky. A mediumsized telescope should be able to show you some of the details in Jupiter's cloud bands. A good pair of binoculars should allow you to see Jupiter's four largest moons, appearing as bright dots on either side of the planet.
