Larnaka Tourism Board Meets the Mayor

A

meeting was held recently between the Larnaka Tourism Board’s Chairman, Dinos Lefkaritis, and the New Mayor of Larnaca, Mr Andreas Louroutziatis.

During the meeting they discussed various issues concerning the development of Larnaca’s attraction to tourism, as well as the utilisation of the various opportunities open to Larnaca at the present time. Specifically discussed were practical suggestions for immediate action to improve the image of the city such as fighting illegal parking, the placement of uniform umbrellas on the Phinikoudes strip, improving the look of the Larnaca-Dhekelia road by planting flowers, shrubs, etc. Furthermore, they discussed issues concerning medium-term infrastructure projects that will help develop tourism in the city, including the creation of the Sailing Centre in order to hold international sailing competitions, the relocation

of tennis courts to highlight the important ancient port area, the conversion of the former Turkish Cypriot neighbourhood into a thematic area and the construction of the Environmental Centre at Salt Lake. Regarding the latter, the Larnaka Tourism Board expresses its full support to Larnaca Municipality’s request for the immediate commencement of the construction of the Salt Lake Environmental Centre, where all the projects and studies are ready. The implementation of the reference centre will assuredly attract tourists from abroad and highlight further the importance of the unique wetland of Alykes. Mr. Louroutziatis has shown a great willingness to resolve issues that directly and/or indirectly affect the tourism of Larnaca and has promised to work closely with society to highlight the various problems which hamper the further development of tourism in the city. The Larnaka Tourism Board gratefully thanks the Mayor and appreciates his active interest. LN

Larnaca Developments Larnaca-Dhekelia Road Dispute

T

he Larnaka Tourism Board has congratulated the Community of Oroklini for a very innovative meeting held in recent weeks on "Spatial Planning and Community Development for Oroklini."

Larnaka Tourism Board is extremely unhappy about the unacceptable delay because there have been discussions and plans surrounding the issue for the last 15 years, at least. The Chairman of the Larnaka Tourism Board, Mr. Dinos

The meeting took place in order to increase the involvement of social partners of the Community and to formulate a rational policy through sustainable design and development projects, including examining the issue of tourism activity in the region. All attendees agreed that the Oroklini Community has significant comparative advantages and potential for recovery and that the area should be established as a quality tourist destination. However, an obstacle to the whole development is the huge delay in implementing the Larnaca-Dhekelia road (Phases 'C' and 'D'). Although the Master Plan has been prepared by the Department of Building and Housing, according to the Ministry of Communications the actual construction of the road is not expected to take place before 2014. The

Lefkaritis said, "The completion of the LarnacaDhekelia road is considered essential for the upgrading of the tourist area. While the Community of Oroklini has made strides in recent years in its development and is a major tourist and holiday resort of the Larnaca District, the long delays in starting construction work of the road in front of the hotel units is not only an obstacle to any further development, but also to the improvement of the image of the region." Mr. Lefkaritis suggested that the Ministries of Finance and Transport reintegrate the funds concerned into their budgets to avoid further delay in construction of this important project. Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency Meets with President of the Republic

Contract for Conference Centre Management Signed

The President of the Republic met recently with the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA).

The contract, worth over three million euros for a period of eleven months, was signed by the Director of the Department of Public Works Alecos Michaelides on behalf of the government and by George Michael on behalf of IMH G.S.C. LTD - PHC Franchised Restaurants Public Ltd Joint Venture, in the presence of the Minister of Communications and Works, Efthymios Flourentzos.

After the meeting, the Government Spokesman Mr Stefanos Stefanou said that it was a very constructive meeting during which views were exchanged on how Cyprus, with even more determination, can continue to promote and attract foreign investment in Cyprus. “As you know, Cyprus is a regional investment centre. It is also a fact that the international environment is very competitive and there are several countries, especially in recent years, which have come on the investment map very dynamically, so Cyprus, as well, should continue to work in the same intensive manner, upgrading its efforts even more, in order not only to remain on the investment map, but to transform itself into a modern investment centre”, he said. "This is what the President of the Republic has said to the Chairman and the Board of Directors of CIPA, which was created by the Government precisely to constitute an important armrest of the Government in an effort to further promote and attract investments in Cyprus. The President of the Republic has said that he trusts CIPA, supports CIPA and of course he will contribute so that CIPA’s cooperation with the competent Ministries and the state’s competent authorities can become more effective, for the fastest completion of the various procedures that are needed every time we have to deal with investments in Cyprus. We are pleased to say that, especially lately, there is an increased activity and interest from foreign investors to invest in Cyprus. This, of course, also has to do with the fact that the existence of natural gas reserves in Cyprus has been confirmed, but at the same time it also has to do with the trust shown by foreign investors in the economy of Cyprus, which is based on very solid foundations. The foreign investors trust the infrastructure that Cyprus has. They trust the educated and capable staff that Cyprus has. These are the positive points that the Government, also in cooperation with CIPA, wants to strengthen even more, so that Cyprus can continue to be a point of reference for foreign investors”, Mr Stefanou added.

The contract for the management of the Conference Centre in Nicosia, for the purposes of the Cypriot presidency of the EU during the second half of 2012, was signed on Wednesday at the Ministry of Communications and Works.

Education Minister Notes Importance of Francophone Cyprus' decision to join the International Organisation of La Francophonie was dictated mainly by the appreciation of the prospects for Cyprus from participating in such an important forum, which promotes dialogue, solidarity and peace among its members, Minister of Education and Culture George Demosthenous said on Wednesday. He noted that learning French is a valuable opening to the modern world. Speaking at a press conference for the International Francophone Month in Cyprus, Demosthenous referred to the events to be organised during the Francophone Month, stating that for the second time Cyprus will be participating in the International Sports and Cultural Francophone Games to be held in Nice, France, in September 2013. The year's events are titled ''Le francais est une chance'' or ''French is an opportunity''.

easyJet Pledges Support for European 112 Emergency Number Campaign

easyJet, operating Europe’s No 1 air transport network, has pledged its support for the European 112 Emergency Number campaign. 112 day is celebrated every year across Europe on 11 February and is dedicated to raising awareness for the 112 European-wide emergency number. There are currently dozens of emergency numbers used across the European Union, however 112 is the only emergency number that can be used to reach emergency services (ambulance, firefighters and police) in any EU country, free of charge. European Commission V i c e Presidents N e e l i e Kroes and Siim Kallas, t o g e t h e r with the 112 Foundation, launched a yearlong campaign calling on dozens of transportation companies (airlines, trains, ferries, etc.) to publicise the 112 number. Last year easyJet was the first airline to pioneer the use of inflight services to help promote the number and will continue doing so on a regular basis with increased visibility via its website, corporate activities and the inflight magazine "Traveller". easyJet will also introduce a rolling programme of onboard announcements ahead of major holiday periods on its more than 600

European routes. Carolyn McCall, Chief Executive of easyJet, commented, "easyJet flies 55 million people around Europe every year and the safety and welfare of our passengers is our highest priority. Three out of four European citizens are still not aware of 112 and that's why we are actively supporting this important plan to raise awareness." European Commission Vice Presidents Neelie Kroes and Siim Kallas added, "This is the start of a year-long campaign to make people travelling in, or visiting, the EU aware of these three numbers that could save their life: 112, Europe's single emergency number. We are delighted that easyJet has joined the European Commission in this initiative".

Emmanuel Paul, president of the 112 Foundation, a Brussels based organisation dedicated to the promotion of the European emergency number commented, “Each year, more than 150 million people travel all over the EU, they should all know 112! Now it is time to go ahead; we cannot wait five more years to make European citizens aware of such a vital number!” LN LN Magazine I 11

the I world, as is the logo for Apple. Another very important Promotion tool at your disposal is Internet Marketing. In the current climate and business world, the Internet cannot be ignored as a place of huge potential for Promotion. You can promote and sell your products and services on your own website, or via placed banner advertisements, online directories, videos and through social media. In fact owning your own company website is almost an imperative nowadays if you wish to survive in the business world. The most effective Promotion for a business is often to use a mix of all the Promotion tools available, but of course is influenced heavily by the product/service itself, your budget and the product life-cycle stage, which we will discuss in following issues. These of course are in turn affected by the Pricing strategy you choose, as well as the Placement and Product aspects of the Marketing Mix. It is a business circle seen the world over! Antonis Loizou Writes: A Bright Future Ahead

W

e wish to express our envy of the active locals (including of course foreign residents) that will be around in Cyprus in 2-4 years. There are so many developments going on that in 2-4 years’ time there will be numerous options to keep one busy and happy living on the island.

We already have 4 golf courses in operation (all in Paphos regrettably), but out of the remaining 7 serious applicants, even if we are to presume that only 4 will be constructed within the next few years, the total of 8 is quite satisfactory, bearing in mind the small distances. We expect that the Shacolas Group (the Doer) will carry out its project of 2 golf courses at Limni (Polis area), as well as say one by Aristo and another one by the Lanitis Group (in Limassol). The Ayia Napa golf course is not progressing and nobody knows where it stands, and the remaining golf courses are still in search of finance. The marinas are under way, but only the Limassol one is actually under construction. It is quite impressive and has successfully sold 40% of the apartments and 5% of the beach villas (launched a month ago) and this is only the initial stage. We are expecting the Larnaca marina (under negotiation), whereas the Ayia Napa marina is still in debate (notwithstanding its progressive management) as to the timing of its execution. The various fishing harbours/marinas are also under way. The Zygi one, just completed, is a new attraction, as is the Four Seasons one at Ayios Theodoros. We are expecting the Pissouri marina in say 3-4 years and the Latchi one has just been completed too. The Paphos marina is still up in the air! Many UK universities are interested in setting up their own branches (not corresponding) here. Two very large UK universities are under negotiations at the current time in search of suitable properties and this will give a boost to the economy providing alternatives to all sorts of people including foreign students to attend. Casinos are coming sooner rather than later. Let’s estimate a period of 3-4 years (one of the “good things” of the recession…it caused the Government

to give in to considering 4-5 casinos all over the island). The water dams Mr Antonis Loizou FRICS, the (at long last) are Managing Partner of Antonis being considered Loizou & Associates for entertainment/ sports. The objections of the Water Development Department (W.D.D.) that we are in trouble are now being reconsidered to allow sailing, rowing and other sports to take place. The mountain snow is far from being a satisfactory level (compared to 10 years ago when international ski games took place), but it is coming, at least this year. Let’s hope that this will continue (it is beyond me why we don’t have dry ski slopes around the island like so many other countries). Through sheer politics and gas, Israel is coming closer to Cyprus. Let’s hope that we will have Israeli hospitals set up here to serve locals as well as Arabs (who will not visit Israel) as well as others. Bearing in mind the lower costs in Cyprus this could be a bonanza. Our natural trails as well as cycling routes are improving considerably. Have you taken the Trooditissa-Foini route? Don’t miss it and its waterfall, which is a 1 hour walk down hill. We are also expecting a car racing track at Larnaca airport, as part of the Qatar deal, as well as the Russian Moni investor (possibly turned down) for a conference hall and many others. What is more important for us, however, is that we have come back down to earth (Cyprus as a whole). For the first time in Cyprus we have an unfortunately high 8% unemployment rate and a disaster in real estate and business, and interest rates are “killing” just about everybody. This is a lesson for all of us to remember, but this situation has also caused business ventures of some size to turn towards foreign investors, which appear now to be one of the few sources of finance. The politicians, at long last, have realised that what sounds good to people’s ears is not necessarily correct. The last elections taught them a lesson and they have finally realised the importance of development. Moreover the “spoilt since 40 years ago” civil servants have adopted new approaches, which we hope will result in much better levels of management. So, for those of us who will be around in 2-4 years and still be active, the quality of life in Cyprus is expected to change for the better. Keep your fingers crossed! LN Magazine I 21

U3A Larnaca Book Group

by Lesley Lawrence

“No! I Don’t Want to Join a Book Club” by Virginia Ironside…what? This woman doesn’t know what she’s missing! As an avid reader I welcomed the opportunity to join the U3A Larnaca Book Group when it was formed in 2007. We meet monthly and quarterly and further enjoy each other’s company by socialising over lunch following the meeting. This book group is so much more than a group of people reading a book for discussion. Our ‘book for the month’ is chosen by consensus from suggestions put forth by the members and we choose our books a number of months in advance to facilitate us being able to obtain them. The person who has chosen the monthly selection gives the first review. This sets a starting-off point for each of us to give our individual assessments of the book, which then leads into further in-depth discussions between us all. These discussions are always lively and often can provide us with a better, or even new, understanding of something in the story from someone else’s perception. We discuss the book for varying lengths of time depending on how much the book was liked or disliked, or how discussion-worthy the book is. Another strong suggestion is to “read” and “finish” the chosen book. This has proven, on more than one occasion, to have been a good suggestion as some of us have said “I couldn’t get into it for the first fifty odd pages, but then I couldn’t put it down!” To my mind, even if you hated the book, that is part of the enjoyment of meaningful discussions and one good reason to be part of the group. What type of books do we read? All types, fiction, nonfiction and the books that are now referred to

as faction, described by Wikipedia: “The genre is sometimes referred to as faction, a portmanteau of "fact" and "fiction". We have discovered that the faction books particularly have not only provided a good read, but have led us to develop a further interest in expanding our knowledge regarding the factual settings and circumstances of these books. Once a year we choose a classic to discover or in some cases revisit. This brings to mind our choice for this past year of “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. This not only brought back memories for some, of school literature assignments, but inspired us to acquire the film production starring a very young Gregory Peck! There are a number of benefits derived from belonging to such a group: •Reading a book you may never have heard of or even considered reading. •Discovering new authors. •Developing an interest in a subject that you may not have even thought about before being introduced to it in a book choice. •A sharing of ideas and knowledge. •We now lend books to each other, thus expanding our reading scope. •The new and interesting people we meet. As for Ms. Ironside’s book, to date we have not read it, but I think I might pick it up anyway as it states it’s a “Diary of a Sixtieth Year” and I want to see if there is anything I might have missed out on doing that year! In the meantime if you would like to find out more about us we can be found on the U3A Larnaca website at www.u3alarnaca.com.

YOUR LETTERS

Have Your Say A Letter To The Editor Campaign against Cyprus Electricity Monopoly and for Fair Energy Prices 29/2, 12:30pm, marked the start of peaceful protests in all towns at EAC offices to demand our Democratic Rights as citizens and residents of Cyprus to a fair pricing deal on our electric bills, and positive changes in policies that will not leave the population of Cyprus penniless, homeless and starving.

being forced to pay out of their own strained pockets for the mistakes of these incompetent individuals who blew up Mari. Where is the justice?

Imagine the positive influence the People of Cyprus will have on bringing forth these necessary changes when everyone makes a stand together, united as one voice...

The State run EAC is exploiting and abusing the fact that they are a monopoly and charging unfair, extortionate prices in the form of taxes and fines which amount to a shocking 30% of our electric bills.

Electricity is a basic necessity that we all rely on for...well for everything. Electricity has been taxed at 15% instead of 3-5% VAT and the government will raise VAT to 17% from March. Needless to mention that Cyprus is already in the top 7 most expensive countries in the world, and sadly these increases in VAT (as well as increases in prices of oil, water, etc.) will make Cyprus the most expensive country to live in.

Our goal is to get our demands met immediately... and until the government meets our demands, we will not stop protesting and putting pressure by other means.

What will happen then: Businesses will close, unemployment will rise, poverty will rise, homelessness will rise, hunger will rise, disease will rise and crime will rise...

Take pride in being a part of this movement, your voice will make a difference. Be present at the protests with your family, colleagues and friends. Thank you! Sign our Petition link: http://www.petitions24.com/end_unfair_electricity_ authority_of_cyprus_effective_monopoly

The repercussions of the Mari disaster have been severe for all sectors of society and the economy. There is no one who has been left unaffected.

Thank you for signing the petition. They will be presented to the EU Peti., amongst other orgs.

The criminal negligence, stupidity and complacency of certain careless individuals in the current government, which resulted in the explosion that destroyed the Mari power plant, have compounded the already dire economic situation in Cyprus. The Mari blast singlehandedly did a lot more harm to the economy, costing the whole country billions in damages!

Have Your Say Book Review: Gweilo by Martin Booth

A

s always, when a book appeals to me, I struggle to find exactly why it is attractive, especially in its content and its style of writing. What is the vital element that makes me think of recommending this book to others?

This book, a remembered autobiography, is a delightful portrayal of the end of an era. Martin Booth describes the years he spent in Hong Kong as a small boy with his parents with a clear recall of events and people. He paints with nostalgia the very vibrant expat community of a colonial outpost, as it emerges from the traumas of the still recent Second World War. There is a vibrant, multicultural, warm and essentially welcoming community, which seems to embrace the small boy. Booth also portrays the confused, and confusing, social traditions of those times. “Gweilo” means “ghost” in Cantonese, and thus by association all Caucasians, and this is the name that the Chinese give Martin as he drafts into their life and shares so much of their daily occupations. With the exuberance and nonchalance of youth, this inquisitive, rather lonely little boy sets out to discover the fascinating new world in which he has found himself, escaping parental supervision and control. Booth’s father emerges from the story as a rather pathetic figure; a weak, self-opinionated little man, who yearns for some sort of recognition. One reviewer thought that Martin Booth had carped on somewhat about this character in his book, but perhaps it could be seen from a different perspective. In many ways, one senses that the writer, in his portrayal of his father, was still that small

A Book Review by Jill Sherwood, Larnaca Writers' Group

boy, being flogged unjustly whenever his father felt aggrieved or -in his mind- had been ignored. One feels that Martin Booth never fully came to terms with his relationship with his parent, and perhaps did not truly realise that his father was also perhaps still frozen within his own childhood. The character of Martin’s mother is a delightful one; she is funny and adventurous, accepting of those around her, and in every way a lover of people. There is niggling disquiet in her passive silence when her son was beaten, often quite unjustly, however, these were different times to our own, and perhaps she realised that to do so would only increase her husband’s resentment of the boy. Martin is, in his own words, “a walking, talking talisman” with his golden hair (gold and all things golden are highly prized by the Chinese). On his very first day in Hong Kong he is advised, “Whenever anyone offers you something to eat, accept it” and he carries through this injunction virtually to the letter, trying out everything from boiled water beetles to hundred-year eggs. He learns Cantonese, and even finds his way into the impenetrable and notorious Kowloon Walled city, the abode of the infamous triad gangs. I particularly loved it when he tried out the bum pinching technique he had witnessed between a soldier and a young Chinese prostitute, on the family servant, eliciting a somewhat different reaction to that shown by the prostitute. This delightful book was written essentially as a record for his children, shortly before Martin Booth died, leaving us with a sense of huge sadness that we may not have the pleasure of reading any further exploits of this author’s later youth.

LN Exclusive Interview With A Crime Writer: Linda Stratmann

L

inda Stratmann is a renowned true crime writer of nineteenth and early twentieth century murder cases, violent crimes, scandals and frauds. Her popular history books include: ‘The Greater London Murders’, ‘The Essex Murders’ and ‘Chloroform: The Quest for Oblivion.’ She is the author of a successful Victorian murder mystery series, featuring heroine Frances Doughty. Linda is also a biographer and a member of the Crime Writers' Association, The Biographers' Club, The Society of Authors and The Historical Writers' Association. With her murder mystery series growing steadily in popularity, I was delighted to have the opportunity to ask her a few questions on behalf of LN Magazine. When did your interest in crime begin – was there a particular story which caught your interest? I have been interested in crime ever since I was about 10, when my mother and I watched Edgar Lustgarten’s true crime programmes on the TV and used to shake in our shoes at his stories! I loved reading and would read anything in the house, including newspapers, classics like Dickens and my father’s American cop thrillers. The first crime book 28 I LN Magazine

I wrote was about the murder of Edwin Bartlett who was found dead in 1886 with liquid chloroform in his stomach. No one could work out how it had got there. His wife was tried for murder and found not guilty, but afterwards a famous surgeon said that now she had been acquitted she ought to tell how she had done it. But she never did. Although that book was not published it was on the strength of it that I was asked to write my first published book Chloroform: the Quest for Oblivion – the fascinating and sometimes shocking history of chloroform. You have written several bestselling True Crime History Books, set in different areas and eras of England such as Essex, Greater London, Kent, Gloucestershire and Middlesex. Do you have a personal favourite? It would be hard to pick one – the History Press does produce such lovely books and they are crammed full of illustrations! My biggest challenge was Greater London Murders as I had to do 33 stories, one for each borough, and I am very pleased with that achievement. Were you pleased when the British Library commissioned Cruel Deeds and Dreadful Calamities: the Illustrated Police News 18641938, an illustrated history of the notorious newspaper? Oh that was such a thrill as it was a project that had been dear to my heart for many years! I love the Illustrated Police News, the sheer vibrancy of its pictures, and the way it got right to the heart of the story. It was also great to be asked to do the British Library podcast. I felt as if I was chatting to friends and it seemed to be over in no time – we did it in one take. Last year I was delighted to be able to give an illustrated talk about the book at the Whitechapel Society conference. You are also writing a biography of the controversial Marquess of Queensberry for Yale University Press. Do you find writing nonfiction to be a very different process from novel writing? Historical fiction and nonfiction are more similar than one might think. Both need research, and both exercise creativity – in fiction one has to devise a story that makes sense, with people that feel real, and places that work convincingly as an environment. In nonfiction one starts with the facts and the process is one of trying to understand them, explaining why events happened, and why people acted in the way they did. In both cases there is a narrative that has to be entertaining and engage the

reader in the story. Was the transition from true crime to fictional mysteries an easy one for you? It was very hard, not from the writing point of view, but getting it published. I had a huge amount of fun writing the first novel; it was a real pleasure to do. Even though I already had five or six nonfiction books out, it seemed for a long time to be impossible. I don’t have an agent for my nonfiction, but realised I would need one for fiction. However I couldn’t get one! Fortunately the History Press introduced a fiction imprint with the Mystery Press and was happy to publish the Frances Doughty series. The Poisonous Seed, your first novel to feature Frances Doughty was set in 1880; did you do a lot of research into life in London at that time? I had already done a huge amount of research into the Victorian period for my earlier nonfiction so I had something of a head start. Even so, more was required and do you know I loved every minute. I am always finding out new things and when I do that I am never happier! When you are writing about a historical period you have to be a little bit in love with it. Why did you select Bayswater as your setting for your first Frances Doughty novel? In Whiteley’s Folly I wrote the story of William Whiteley who founded the big Bayswater store and was murdered in 1907, so I had a lot of material on that location and realised what a wonderful place it was to set a murder mystery. It is London, but at the same time it is like a small town with local characters and concerns and gossip. Its population comes from all strata of society and many countries. There is a beautiful Greek orthodox cathedral there, St Sophia, which was consecrated in 1882 and the Archbishop of Cyprus preached there in 1889.

novels? Yes, her second adventure The Daughters of Gentlemen is out in April and this is her first real case as a consulting detective. This and all my books are available on Amazon, and the fiction is downloadable on kindle. I am currently writing her third adventure A Case of Doubtful Death, and I have many plans for her in the future.

Frances has proved to be a popular Victorian heroine, is she going to appear in any further

ART & CULTURE

An Interview with Sarah Hoskins The Beauty in the Discarded by Margarita Drosopoulou

Sarah Hoskins is a British artist from the South West of England. After establishing herself in the art community of Devon, exhibiting her work widely throughout the country and internationally, including entering the US borders, she decided to take a step forward and reach new sources of inspiration and stimulus. Going back and forth from Cyprus for the last decade, in the end fate caused her life to take a turn, keeping her in the Cypriot territory for good. Sarah, what brought you to Cyprus? Originally, I came to Cyprus in 2001 to do a postgraduate Diploma at the Cyprus College of Art in Lempa, Pafos. I had had a difficult time trying to continue making art since finishing my Degree at Wimbledon School of Art in 1996. That year in Cyprus transformed my work and my life. I was so creatively invigorated by the environment of the island that I returned to the UK with a new confidence and professional momentum that carried me forward into a career as a working artist. 32 I LN Magazine

Why did you come back? In Jan 2010 I found myself at a crossroads in my life and was rescued once again by an offer of a residency at the Cyprus College of Art, this time in Larnaca. I made a leap of faith; I quit my job as a part time upholsterer’s assistant, sublet my flat and once again immersed myself in my art. My mission was to find my own language as an artist. I was doing fairly well, I was exhibiting regularly and had a growing number of collectors but I was not quite satisfied with my work. Something was missing...but I couldn’t tell what. Cyprus proved once again to be the rejuvenating creative catalyst that I needed. I set myself the task of investigating the language behind my work, and set myself simple formal exercises. It was like Alice Down The Rabbit Hole! Once I began these visual games I was forever finding another one to do! It was like I had been swimming, well, drowning really, in an ocean of possibilities and at long last I had found dry land. Now, I had my island to explore.

Why Cyprus? What is it about the “discarded” world? I am constantly inspired by Cyprus, but not in the way you would expect. I find beauty and inspiration in the things others would most likely find ugly. My passion lives with the piles of rubbish in the street, the discarded boxes, and the jumbled telephone wires. For me, the short walk from my apartment to college is a visual feast. Cyprus has had a powerful transformative effect on me. I have changed in so many ways. Some even say that my face has changed. I have felt the most at peace with myself here that I have ever felt. I came to Cyprus as a figurative painter wanting to tell narratives and have found myself becoming an abstract painter. I still do portrait commissions, if asked, but my passion is the purity of the relationship between things and the beauty in their own particular natures. Tell me more about your work, what are you trying to achieve? I want my work to be simple, dumb even, yet a little mysterious. My way of working balances between the almost mathematical scientific approach, and the visionary. I like to set myself formal boundaries to react to, and then I almost allow the painting to grow itself. How easy do you find it to make a living as an artist? It is a difficult choice to be an artist. You are taking a gamble with your life, especially as a woman. I believe there are many things in life that have passed me by and I know that if I had chosen another profession, my life would be much more comfortable, however I have never felt I had any

alternative. Making a living is almost always an uphill battle for artists. I am lucky that the job that I do to pay the rent is so fulfilling. I am at present, the head of the Foundation at the Cyprus College of Art. I feel very lucky to be a part of the college and to work alongside its inspirational founder, Stass Paraskos. I am very passionate about students of art receiving adequate formal training, like life drawing, colour theory, and correct use and understanding of their materials. All too often, these days, Art colleges do not value the basic skills. I have also designed and adapted my own ‘Shape Workshops’ in which I share some of my own techniques and approaches to idea generation and what I call ‘particularisation’. Some of my students call me (I hope affectionately) ‘the particulariser!’ I quite like it! What are your feelings about the art world in general today? It is both an interesting and a difficult time to be a painter. In much of the Western world, the focus has moved towards the conceptual. The skill of the application of paint has become less important somehow, even dismissed as craft. I believe though that everything is about to change, perhaps unrecognisably. I’m not saying that I don’t like conceptual art or any of the ideas based work being celebrated today; I just feel that those who say what is of value have become a dogmatic dictatorship. If there is one area of thinking that should be free, it should be art. Sarah Hoskins is having her first personal exhibition in Larnaca, under the aegis of the Cornaro Institute and the Cyprus College of Art, on April 5th, 2012. LN Magazine I 33

History is the Gossip of the Winners Art is Its Guided Tool

by Margarita Drosopoulou

“history”

comes from the Greek word

“ιστορία”,

which

denotes the inquiry; the knowledge

In Ancient Egypt, enormous imposing statues were created to present the Pharaohs as Gods, aiming to influence and direct people’s decisions and actions in the name of God. Pharaohs, as the incarnations of the God Horus, had the absolute power over the Egyptian people (Fig. 1).

through investigation. Art was always one of history’s tools, narrating stories, conveying

ideas

and

ideals

and

spreading fear and awe. The question is who discovers, collects and organises the information of the past? To answer this question we don't have to go far. Since we were children we have been taught that “good” always overpowers and wins over “evil”. And when it comes to telling the story, the central narrators of history are those in power; those who rule, control and take the decisions, in other words, the “winners” in the name of “good” and in a sense far wider than the simple war perspective. From time to time the “winner’s side” is personified in the face of the wealthy and rich aristocracy, the church, the sovereigns or tyrants, or even -in contemporary contexts- the various political unions or confederations who control money and conscience. From its foundations, Art was always a guided tool, serving religious, social, financial and political circumstances. 34 I LN Magazine

The Hellenistic kings and Roman emperors realised the extensive power of Art and exploited it to the

maximum, so as to evoke fear in their enemies, awe and respect in their allies. We don’t only find striking sculptures of the glorious emperors, but also of their fallen in battle enemies, who served as the counter-image of the winners’ success; as the stepping stone for the winners to visually establish their success and grandeur. A perfect example is the Dying Gaul (Fig. 2), a sculpture that commemorates the victory of the Hellenistic King Attalos in 230BC over the Gauls, representing the defeated enemy in agony and pain. Even during the Byzantine times when everything revolved around religion, Art was used yet again to convey the message of God, depicting scenes of his life and miracles, along with the Holy companions who supported his faith. Guided messages were spread throughout the empire, imposing on people the acceptable moral attitudes. And the story goes on in the Renaissance period, when the Art-tool was in the hands of the wealthy aristocratic families at first. The Florentine Medici family widely funded the arts and tried to create marvellous artworks, in order for their city to be seen as renowned and remarkable among the rest of the world. The imposing sculpture of David created by Michelangelo at the beginning of the 16th century, which represents the ancient myth of undersized David defeating Goliath, was initially placed in front of the Palazzo della Signoria, a central square in Florence, symbolising Florentine defiance against any aggressor (Fig. 3).

ART & CULTURE Later on power passed into the hands of the greatest of them all, the Catholic Church, which not only shaped the political world at the time, but also introduced and enforced its own moral and belief system. And history has repeated itself throughout the centuries, giving us infinite examples. The question is what is happening to the “defeated”; to the “weak” and “powerless”? Do they ever join the game? The “Others” joined the game when they realised that they can use the same tool to express their repressed emotions, ideas and needs. Things were never easy for the courageous and rebellious “weak side”, which raised its stature through the Arts, being paid back with imprisonment, exile, or even death, along with the destruction of their pieces of “bad faith and attitude”. But as all revolutions go, it started slowly and gradually gained ground. We can find abundant painters and sculptors opposing the ruling classes through their artwork. Michelangelo’s Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City, was criticised by Biagio da Cesena, a papal master of ceremonies, who said that nude figures had no place in such a sacred place, and that the paintings would be more at home in a public tavern. Michelangelo included him in the Last Judgment as Minos, one of the three judges of the underworld, while a serpent is biting his genitals (Fig. 4), illustrating Michelangelo’s disdain towards da Cesena. During the 17th century, Pierre Puget was commissioned to create a piece for the French court of Louis XIV. He decided to depict Milo da Crotona (Fig. 5), an old athlete who wanted to try his powers in a late age, by splitting a tree trunk that he had found already cleft. Out of vanity and denial of his weakness, he found himself caught in the stump, being devoured by wolves in the end. Having decided to create such a piece destined to a King, Puget tried to manifest the audacity of the aristocratic life. In contemporary contexts artists fight racism, 36 I LN Magazine

sexism, capitalism, exclusivity and inequality, through the Arts. Banksy, a pseudonymous graffiti artist creates satirical works of political and social commentary, spreading anti-war, anti-capitalist and anti-establishment messages. He has been widely chased and his artwork is created over a night and destroyed the following night. But still, the effort is made and the messages are slowly but gradually spreading as attitudes change. Or even Barbara Kruger, an American conceptual artist, who has joined the battle against sexism and inequality through her sharp and aggressive phototext collages, involving the viewer in the struggle for power and control. As she stated, “I’m interested in how identities are constructed, how stereotypes are formed, how narratives sort of congeal and become history”. Returning to the starting point, which is “history” as an interpretation of facts, we should all consider the fact that messages are subjective, variable, in flux and able to change. Art is the tool and we are the handlers. Consequently, we should see Art as the reflection of the universal order, as the visual manifestation of the invisible spirit, and use it as such, accepting that objectivity is only achieved through the art of the “winner” and the “defeated”, gossiping side by side.

Easter Kid’s Recipes: Decorating Naturally D ec

oratin gN at

What you will need: • A whole bunch of onion peel (you can get it from your local fruit shop, or just start stocking up from now) • The day you plan to do your eggs, go out to your garden, the park or a field with your kids and collect clovers, flowers and leaves with delicate detail. The more detail it has the better it will be because that is what will show. You can use parsley, dill, rocket, even rosemary! Anything really. • Stockings (any ripped ones you’ve got will do perfectly!) • Needle & thread • Eggs

With Easter around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about fun ways to decorate. Eggs are a big part of that decoration. There are so many options out there, from a myriad of colours to a multitude of stickers, but with two small girls in our household, I always still choose the natural way. The whole process is a lot of fun, and the kids can so easily be involved in this . 48 I LN Magazine

Egg tastic Method: 1. Position the leaf on a raw egg as you like. Wrap it in a cut out piece of stocking and tighten with thread. Make sure it doesn’t move as you are wrapping. 2. Once that’s done, put the onion peel in a pot of water at room temperature and some salt. By then the eggs should also be room temperature. 3. Place them in the pot and boil as you would usually to get hard boiled eggs. On low heat.

4. Once the eggs are boiled, place the whole pot under running water. Let the water run until the eggs cool down. Take each egg out one at a time, carefully remove the stocking using scissors and clean completely. It’s always such a pleasure when you unwrap your eggs to be surprised by wonderful shapes and colours. Polish with olive oil and that’s it! Your naturally decorated, hard boiled Easter eggs are ready for display (and consumption!). LN Magazine I 49

While dough is rising prepare the Easter eggs: 7. Fill a medium saucepan with water and bring to a boil. 8. Add dye and vinegar. 9. Add eggs to cover, and simmer for 20 minutes, or until eggs are coloured. Alternately, if using food dye (not paste), hard boil eggs, and place food colouring and vinegar in a bowl large enough to submerge eggs. Add eggs and allow to soak until desired cover is reached. Remove eggs and allow to dry on a cooling rack over an aluminium foil lined baking sheet. Some people have even been known to use fabric dye in lieu of Greek dye in order to achieve the traditional deep red colour!

Tsourekia Dough:

Glaze:

10. Knock back the dough once it has risen, cover, and allow to rise for another hour. 11. Once it has risen, transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and divide into 3 parts. 12. Roll each one into a 12 inch log of equal thickness. 13. Plait one end together and braid log. 14. Place 1 egg in each of the holes. 15. Transfer bread onto a baking sheet, cover with a kitchen towel, and allow to rise for another hour, or until doubled. 16. Preheat oven to 350F degrees.

17. Whisk egg yolk with honey and water. 18. Once bread has risen, brush glaze over the entire surface except for eggs. 19. Blot olive oil onto a paper towel and use it to shine eggs. 20. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until golden.

Psychology, Psychiatry, Psychotherapy & Counselling I have found in my clinical practice here in Cyprus, more often than not, clients frequently ask me: "What are the differences between psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy and counselling?" Very good question! Nite White) with accurate custom-fit trays supplied by a dentist and performed at home over approximately two weeks.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance. Many dentists use the analogy that dental veneers are for your teeth what false fingernails are for your nails. There has been a lot said about porcelain veneers in the past; some amazingly successful stories, as well as some terrible horror stories. So what is the truth about veneers? They are certainly a fantastic treatment as they can produce tremendous results. They can often be done without local anaesthetic. Personally, I always prefer the ultra-thin veneers as they are so thin that very little removal of tooth structure is required, as

opposed to veneers that wrap around most of the tooth and require considerable preparation of the teeth. Other advantages of the ultra-thin veneers are that as you are bonding onto the outer enamel layer of the tooth, the bond is much stronger and there is no sensitivity after they are fitted. The reason one sometimes hears some horror stories about veneers is that not everybody is a suitable candidate for them. It is important that you have a proper examination by a dentist who is comfortable with placing veneers so that the correct diagnosis can be made. If your teeth meet in a manner that will cause the opposing teeth to fracture the veneers, then they will not work. The same applies to people who have a habit of grinding their teeth. It is also important to be aware that porcelain veneers are not reversible. If a dentist tells you that they can be drilled away leaving your tooth in its original state, be very wary. Motoring Madness' Galactic Brilliance

ast issue discussed the amazing attributes of the fastest road legal cars in the world, so where do we go from there? Well with the use of a familiar phrase "there's no way but up". Spaceport America is the world's first

Virgin Galactic recently completed their new spaceship (SpaceShipTwo, VSS Enterprise) and carrier craft (WhiteKnightTwo, VMS Eve), developed by Scaled Composites. Now, space flight isn't something new, it's been happening for a long time, but Virgin Galactic has done something special and completely redesigned the way space flight takes place. Here's how it works: The carrier craft WhiteKnightTwo, as its title

Traditionally, for those of you who have seen live footage or watched various space sci-fi genre films, space ships take off from the ground, but not so with Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo. So why change this decade long approach. It's very simple... Safety. According to

www.virgingalactic.com "Safety is Virgin Galactic's North Star." Burt Rutan, founder of Scaled Composites, calculated that 50,000ft is the safest, most efficient height at which to launch a spacecraft. This means also that the rocket motor has to burn for only a short time compared to the usual bomb blast of traditional vertical space ship take offs. This has allowed SpaceShipTwo to use a hybrid rocket motor that can be shut down by the pilots any time during its operation. And the design of SpaceShipTwo, as well as the fact that it is launched at 50,000ft means it can glide safely back to the runway at any time. With the unique ability to rotate the entire tail by 65 degrees, SpaceShipTwo glides back down to Earth much like a badminton shuttlecock. Safety is definitely the key. WhiteKnightTwo is also the world's largest all composite air craft ever built. And the brilliance of the Carbon fibre composite used, is that it is 4 times stronger than steel and a quarter of its weight, as well as having

This isn't a fantasy book or a future possibility, these brilliant technological advances are in place now. Take a look at the fabulous pictures and see for yourself. You could of course book your own ticket on a commercial space flight, once everything has been tested to the limit,

and the starting price for flights is currently a 'mere' $200,000 with a $20,000 refundable deposit! The system includes the franchise debut of co-operative multiplayer, as well as two iOS-exclusive apps, the cover-based, third-person shooter, Mass Effect Infiltrator, and the Mass Effect 3 Datapad. ASTRONOMY NEWS

Astro News European Astronomy Festival 2012

By George Troullias Director of Kition Planetarium & Observatory

The European Astronomy Festival (Astrofest 2012) once again took place in the heart of London, at Kensington Conference and Events Centre. The KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY was there, represented by George Troullias. A two-day conference and exhibition, the largest of its kind in Europe, with participants from all parts of the world; scientists, exhibitors and visitors attended a conference which covered all the latest issues in the field of astronomy. It was the “Universe under one roof”. The coolest stars and the warming Earth, black holes and the bright Sun, and many other astronomical topics were presented by leading scientists to astronomers who attended the conference. Highlights included lunar scientist Dr. Noah Petro of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre, cosmologist Professor Carlos Frenk of Duham University discussing dark matter and Hanny van Arkel telling the story of the most famous citizen science discovery yet. A brief synopsis of the conference Planets and pulsations-the new Keplerian revolution – Kepler is a telescope for detecting planets orbiting stars. It has so far discovered more than 1700 of them closing on its goal to find another Earth. Climate change on Earth and planets - the Sun’s role discussed - Our Sun is near the end of its 11-year cycle (Solar Maximum). Sudden drops in Sunspot numbers since 2008 suggest the first hints of climate change on Earth in the near future and a possible “Little Ice Age” in approximately 20 years in Europe. This suggests that there is the possibility that rivers and lakes in Europe will freeze during winter time in Europe. The coolest stars – Discovery of star-like objects with temperatures from about 2000 degrees down to a few hundred degrees, well below those of normal Red Dwarfs (Spectral type M), has led to the creation of three new Spectral types: L, T and Y, termed Brown Dwarfs and have masses less than 7% of the Sun.

74 I LN Magazine

The lure of the Northern Lights – Spectacular images and videos of the stunning phenomenon “Aurora Borealis” were presented during this talk. This wonder of the natural world is caused by subatomic particles from the Sun hitting the Earth’s upper atmosphere and making it glow. As solar activity rises towards its maximum, the number of Aurorae and their intensity is on the rise. Secrets of Superstars – High-mass stars with short periods of life. In dense interstellar clouds, forming stars compete for the available gas through their gravitational attractions and a few of them end up with vastly more mass than a typical star. In some cases, over 100 times more than the mass of the Sun. They affect their environment with the radiation and winds they emit, before exploding as spectacular supernovae after a few million years. Lunar basins, the Moon’s big bangs – In the first 500 million years of the Moon’s history, dozens of large impacts formed large, deep basins on the Moon, shaping the surface we know today. The largest and oldest of them all, the south-pole Aitken Basin, lies on the far side of the Moon. The Allan Chapman lecture: “The Drapers and the birth of astrophotography” – Astronomical photography was pioneered by self-funded, independent “Grand Amateur” scientists. The Drapers (father and son – academic physicians) had astronomy as their passion. They had advanced technology so fast, that by the year 1840 the firstever photograph of the Moon was taken. By the year 1884, they were obtaining spectacular photographs of nebulae and deep-space objects with giant camera telescopes. After Henry Draper’s death, his wife used their fortune to fund the now-standard “Henry Drape Catalogue of Spectral Types” which was produced at Harvard and named in his honour. The Sun from both sides - A fleet of spacecraft is now showing us the full 360-degree sphere of the Sun. Theses space missions include STEREO, Hinode and the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Seeing the complete Sun provides a new perspective on how its magnetic field varies over long and short time scales, driving the Solar Cycle and leading to energetic events such as coronal mass ejections.

Black holes and galaxies – the heart of matter – Supermassive black holes are known to reside at the centre of nearly all galaxies and they have a mass that is usually 0.2% that of their hosts. This is most surprising, since supermassive black holes are tiny in relation to their host galaxy. Their relative diameter is comparable to that of a DNA molecule in the human body. In search of the dark – “Dark Matter” – Most of the mass in the Universe is invisible. Evidence for the existence of this so-called “Dark Matter” comes from the motion of stars in galaxies and from gravitational lensing. Computer simulations show that “Dark Matter” is essential for the Universe to make galaxies, stars, planets and people. However, we do not yet know what “Dark Matter” is. All indications point to it consisting of exotic elementary particles created in the early Universe. Credits: Michael Johnson NASA Ames Research Center http://www.nasa.gov/kepler

Something Crafty Fun With Mosaics

Tools and Materials:

● 30cm diameter Wooden or ceramic Bowl, plate or circle ● 50 black/dark brown with gold thread glass tiles for border & olives ● 5 mid brown/gold thread tiles for branch ● 30 green tiles (mixture of 3 shades) for leaves ● 100 orange glass tiles for background ● 1 small glass bead ● Mosaic adhesive or thick pva/wood glue ● Beige Grout approx. 700g ● Mosaic Tile cutters ● Pattern & Carbon Paper ● Sellotape ● Pencil

Method

1. Prime your bowl surface using a mixture of pva glue and water, leave to dry, & repeat. 2. Place the olive picture pattern on top of carbon paper, secure in place with Sellotape where you want olive branch to go and draw round picture with pencil, repeat on opposite side of bowl, picture should now be visible on bowl. 3. Starting with the border, glue whole tiles onto edge of bowl, be careful not to put on too much glue, just enough to stick the tile securely without excess spreading from the side. Leave a small gap between the tiles approx. 2-3mm. Glue small glass bead in centre of bowl. 4.. Main Pattern - Start with the olives, cut the 4 corners off your tile then nibbling a little of the tile at a time smooth the edges and make it a round shape. Repeat till you have 10 circles. Glue these in place. Cut the brown branch tiles into thin long pieces and stick on the branch, then cut the various green shaded tiles into long triangular leaf shapes, stick these in place. 5.. Take the orange tiles and cut each one twice to make 3 random shapes. This makes the crazy paved effect of the background. 6. Once tiling has finished leave for 24 hours to dry before grouting. 7. Mix grout with water till you reach a thick toothpaste consistency (be careful not to add too much water, little at a time). 8. Smooth over mosaic making sure all gaps are filled including the edge tiles. 9. Leave for approx. 20 mins for grout to start to dry a little, then take slightly damp (not wet) sponge and wipe over tiles, this will smooth the

grout and clean off any excess. 10. Leave to dry then polish tiles with a duster or soft cloth. Cost for tiles for this project is approx. €11 using tiles displayed. Can be created with cheaper tiles for less than €6. Fun for Kids Easter Bunny Craft This is a simple craft to do with your child and can be easily adjusted for any age. It adds a lovely Easter touch around the house.

What you’ll need? 1 Styrofoam egg 2 googly eyes Scraps of pink, purple, white and yellow felt Small blue pompom Green ribbon White paint Glue Wooden skewer Scissors Paint brush

If your child is older, let them cut bunny features out of felt, otherwise do it yourself. 1. Take the pink felt and cut two circles for cheeks, one semi-circle for the mouth and two curved triangles for ears (about ž of the size of the egg). 2. Cut two rectangles out of the yellow felt and cut into each to make whiskers. 3. Cut two smaller curved triangles out of white felt and a bow out of purple felt. 4. Stick the egg onto the skewer and have your child paint it white. 5. Allow to dry and glue the bunny features. 6. Tie a ribbon into a bow around the skewer and glue the purple bow to it. You can use the bunny to decorate around the house by adding it to your tulip filled vase, sticking it into a plant or into the garden while the kids hunt for Easter eggs.

Easter Lessons The Easter Rabbit and Friends

by Katerina Iasonidou

What is Easter? The word ‘Easter’ was originally derived from the word ‘Eostre’. It was believed that Eostre was an ancient Greek goddess of spring who returned to Earth with the light and warmth of spring. Easter commemorates the rebirth of Jesus Christ. It also marks the start of the spring season and is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm by Christians across the world. Easter is an occasion that denotes life, rejuvenation, renewal, rebirth and restoration of all beings on Earth.

What The Easter Bunny Taught Me. "ALL I EVER NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT LIFE I LEARNED FROM THE EASTER BUNNY" ► Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. ► Walk softly and carry a big carrot. ► Everyone needs a friend who is all ears. ► There’s no such thing as too much candy. ► All work and no play can make you a basket case. ► A cute little tail attracts a lot of attention. ► Everyone is entitled to a bad hare day. ► Let happy thoughts multiply like rabbits. ► Some body parts should be floppy. ► Keep your paws off other people’s jellybeans. ► Good things come in small sugar-coated packages. ► The grass is always greener in someone else’s basket. ► An Easter bonnet can tame even the wildest hare. ► To show your true colours – you have to come out of your shell. ► The best things in life are still sweet and gooey.

Child Safety Online

Before she was even three years old, my Emma was using computers. Finding her playing matching tiles using a mouse one day at the Kindergarten got me thinking … How safe is the internet for our kids? How do we protect our children? At almost 3 years old they cannot do too much damage, but what happens once they are able to read and write? When they hear something someone says at school and instead of asking you what it means they look it up on the internet, only to be bombarded with who knows what kind of images? I know they’d probably talk about it with friends no matter what, but I think that’s a whole lot different than being shown images. And as they get older the dangers get deeper. What with online predators, cyber bullying, social networking, gaming, mobile phones and blogs. All these are mediums that can be used by unsavoury characters to gain access to our children. There is so much of it out there that it's really overwhelming, especially for us parents of pretty much the last parental generation that didn’t grow up wired as our children will be. So what is the solution? Move to the mountains and live technology free? I hardly think so. But we do need to be aware of the dangers of the internet, educate our children about them and have an open line of communication, but also most importantly take precautions. Educational resources for parents and children about online dangers are everywhere, a few of the ones I found useful are www.netsmartz.org, www.safekids.com, http://wiredkids.org. It is good to read through them to get a better idea of the dangers that lurk inside some internet doors. There are child friendly browsers like www.kidzui.com and www.kidoz.net which make the internet a more child friendly place. You can limit your child’s search options to only child friendly sites, games and videos. Parents space allows you to monitor their online activity. You can also customise the browsing experience to the age and gender of your child. Getting in touch with your internet provider and activating censoring is another option. For older than 6 you pretty much have to ensure that your kids are educated enough about these dangers. They should know what the pitfalls are and be able to stay clear as much as possible. They will, however, need your help, guidance and understanding. You may need to ensure that the people they “friend” on social networking sites are really people they know. I hope this was useful. I never thought that I’d have to start thinking about all this before my daughter was even three, but this is today’s world and these are our challenges. COFFEE BREAK RIDDLES Questions: What kind of running means walking? Answer: Running out of Petrol!

FASCINATING FACTS Did you know? ►More than ten people a year are killed by vending machines. ►President George W. Bush was once a cheerleader! ►The Yo-Yo originated as a weapon in the Philippine Islands during the sixteenth century. ►Donkeys are commonly used by the Iraqi Rebels to launch rockets!

JOKES ► A man, whose level of drunkenness was bordering on the absurd, stood up to leave a bar and fell flat on his face. "Maybe all I need is some fresh air," thought the man as he crawled outside. He tried to stand up again, but fell face first into the mud. "Screw it," he thought. "I'll just crawl home." The next morning, his wife found him on the doorstep asleep. "You went out drinking last night, didn't you?" she said. "Uh, yes," he said sheepishly. "How did you know?" "You left your wheelchair at the bar again." ► A man was sitting at the bar in a watering hole which had a selling point of being on top of the largest skyscraper in town. Another man walks in and asks the bartender for a Jack Daniel's. He downs it, and then takes a running leap out of the window. Much to everybody's surprise, he floats back up and climbs through the window back into the bar. The man at the bar is amazed and asks the man how he did it. "Easy," says the man. "Outside this window are some very strong wind currents, which can carry you back to the window." "Wow," says the man at the bar. "I gotta try this." He takes a running leap out of the window and falls to a horrible, bloody, and flat death. "Geez, Superman," says the bartender. "You can be a real a jerk when you're drunk."

FUNNY QUOTES
