WELCOME

Publication sponsored by the Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission

News bulletin!! Alexandria was named “Best Town” in Minnesota by Minnesota Monthly magazine this year. So, what more do you need to know? Let me fill you in on some particulars that make us a great – no, an incredible place to live, work, visit and have fun! What a privilege and honor to be able to introduce you to the Alexandria Lakes Area! As Mayor of Alexandria I have the pleasure of watching, learning, participating, and helping facilitate the growth of Alexandria. I can tell you Alexandria is all about partnerships, collaborations and teamwork. That is what sets us apart from other communities. We pride ourselves on gathering people around the table and getting things done! If you are fortunate enough to live here OR are thinking about making the Alexandria area your home, you will find activities year-round in the lakes area. People love residing here and it shows! We were also voted in the top 10 small towns to live in by livabililty.com. We have festivals and entertainment almost every weekend from early spring to fall, trails that wind for miles and quaint shops that will keep you interested and entertained. The Andria Theatre, Theatre Le Homme Dieu, Legacy of the Lakes Museum, golfing, dining, extraordinary parks and the historic Runestone and Runestone Museum are just a few fun things to do while in the area. Want a fun winery experience? Carlos Creek Winery offers wine, music and a brewery called 22 Northmen. They also host the annual Grape Stomp every September. Prefer beer? Copper Trail Brewery has moved right downtown and is a fan favorite of beer lovers far and wide. They too offer entertainment. What makes this a fantastic work environment is that you can be at work, and in minutes (any season of the year) be on any one of our many lakes relaxing and enjoying yourself: ice fishing, waterskiing, boating or just touring the chain of lakes. Don’t want to be on the lakes? This area has a plethora of golf courses. It is home to the Alexandria Golf Course, which Tom Lehman grew up playing on, and the Geneva Golf Course has a 27-hole golf course – yes 27 holes. Arrowwood Resort has an 18-hole golf course and there are several other golf courses in the area. Still not convinced? How about a bike ride, hike or go on a walk on one of our trails that will lead you right downtown for some shopping? We also have plenty of parks and recreational activities. Did I mention our state-of-the-art schools? We have the most wonderful schools from pre-K to our state recognized high school. Alexandria Technical and Community College offers a wide variety of classes for all ages, including Senior College. I would be remiss if I did not mention our hospital system, Alomere Health, which is an incredible state recognized award-winning hospital and clinic system that offers excellent health care, specialized services and allows you to participate in your health care. The hospitality of the people of the Alexandria area will make the Alexandria Lakes Area feel like home in no time – this is an amazing place to work! A remarkable place to visit! An incredible place to call home! Join me in the Alexandria Lakes Area – I guarantee you will find a friend here and you will like our lifestyle! Mayor Sara Carlson

the TAYLORS MANY HATS

Kevin wears many hats. He has been the Equity and Inclusion Liaison for Alexandria Public Schools since 2006. He is also the Director for the Youth for Christ organization and is the Youth Pastor at Reach Church. His wife, Nicki, is an entrepreneur who manages Torched, a company that upcycles furniture and dĂŠcor. She also owns a pet care service company with her mother and sister called Paws Plus Pet Services.

ABOUT THE FAMILY

Kevin and Nicki were married in 2002 and have two children. Lexi is a junior at the high school. She is also an artist who recently had her artwork displayed in New York on a billboard. The drawing was to raise awareness for climate action and the dying coral reefs. Lucas is a freshman who has interests that range from NASA to snowboarding. They also have extended family in the community.

THEIR ADVICE TO OTHERS

MOVING TO THE COMMUNITY

There are several reasons the Taylors decided to move to the community in 2005. They had visited Nicki’s mother and thought the Alexandria area was a nice community that felt like “home.” The family had been residing in Maryland. The idea, however, of living in a small and safe community led them to make the decision to send Nicki and the children to Alexandria while Kevin finished his one-year military commitment in DC. The family has never regretted their decision, and Kevin says that it’s a “God -fearing community where I can walk in obedience and be the me that God created me to be.”

Get out of your silo and get to know people. You can’t isolate yourself – let people come alongside you. There may be disappointments and missteps, but that lets you meet new people. Invite people in to meet you. If it’s in your power and ability to fill a need, then fill it. Be a life giver.

It’s about community... we love this community, relationships, and God... He hasn’t pulled us anywhere else. But when He moves us to ‘move’, we won’t fight it.

the downings working the dream

Since May of 2018, Adam has been the finance manager at Juettner Motors, a family owned business started by Jessica’s grandfather and father over 50 years ago. He recently became part owner, alongside Mark Juettner and Mark’s sons, Joe and Jake Juettner. Previously he was in management at United Health care in Minnetonka, working in the insurance industry for over 14 years.

Jessica has been in the fitness industry for over 20 years as a master Trainer and Instructor. She became the owner of Vital Fit Club in July 2018, where she is pursuing her dream of having her own fitness boutique. She continues to maintain her education and passions in the industry, commuting a few times a month to work at Lifetime Fitness Plymouth. Jessica learned about the opportunity to own Vital Fitness through her friend and fitness guru Heather Godfrey, who also introduced her to an amazing community of likeminded fitness enthusiasts. Jessica believes the health and wellness industry in this town continues to grow as they have so much to offer here for living a healthy lifestyle.

on the personal side

Adam and Jessica are parents to not only 8-year-old Ella, but also to 6 year old triplets Sofia, Mia, and Aiden. With Alexandria being Jessica’s hometown and the place where most of her family resides, they felt a strong pull to move here for family support as well as career opportunities to pursue lifelong dreams of business ownership. They had both been working in corporate America for 20 years, commuting 30 plus miles daily and wanted more time to spend with loved ones. They are excited they get to be a part of a small community where it’s a quick drive to attend sports and activities. Currently their kids attend Lincoln Elementary School where they have been thrilled with the staff and support. They love spending time on the lakes, biking trails and playing at the parks during the summer months, and skating, sledding and outdoor winter sports the rest of the year. They spend most of their time outdoors as a family.

in our community

Jessica says, “After moving away for 20 years, it is such a blessing to be back in a small, family orientated community. I feel like you can truly plant roots here and watch them grow. It was an amazing place to grow up and I am so happy that my children will have the same opportunity. This town continues to grow and change, and I am eager for what the future holds here. I believe this town is one of the most magical places on earth.

the DEITZ’S OUR WORK DAY

Scott has been an employee of ALP Utilities, the municipal utility of the City of Alexandria, for 45 years . He worked his way through several positions and is currently the Operations Manager. Renee Deitz has worked for 45 years for the Alexandria Veterinary Clinic PetCare Center in Alexandria and is currently the practice manager. Having attended school in Waseca for Veterinary Technician, Renee’s first job was with the clinic, but she left the practice to look at other interests such as figure skating coaching. Having never skated prior to meeting Scott, she took up the hobby after their marriage. Finding she enjoyed it, she expanded that into coaching and ice dancing.

FAMILY AND INTERESTS

Renee and Scott have two boys – Matthew and Micah. Matthew Deitz is the owner of Bright Ideas Construction in Fargo. He’s married to Dawn and they have two children- Landon and Nora. Micah is an architect in New Port Beach, California. Growing up, the family was involved in nearly every activity in the area. When Scott began waterskiing, Renee and the boys joined his hobby and supported him by learning to slalom, trick and jump alongside him. The family helped develop the first waterskiing club in the area. They also founded a Junior Camp in the mid-1990s that allowed area youth to come to Alexandria to attend their clinic and learn more and compete in the sport. The family doesn’t believe in sitting still – they enjoy road biking, mountain biking and hopping on their motorcycles in their downtime.

COMMUNITY LIVING

Scott has always lived in Alexandria, and he remembers hearing his school friends say they "can't wait to get out of this town," but he never felt that. Although he didn’t know it growing up, he looks back now and knows this was a good choice to live here and make it their home.

Scott points out that he found success working at ALP Utilities without attending college (and racking up tuition bills). He was motivated to learn on the job, and found he was good at it. Being mechanically minded, he found his way of learning was hands on, and had he been a student currently, he probably would have done very well learning in Alexandria Public School’s Academies.

16

Renee came to the area after graduating from college and felt at home. She believes it’s a community that is pulling in the same direction. People in the area work together on things to make it a great community. They both point out that they really have lived here their whole lives, but they hear from people moving into the area that it’s a great place to live. The community has a Christian vibrancy that makes it unique, and there are so many great people within the community that puts the area on a good trajectory. Competing businesses work together for the benefit of the good and you don’t often see that in other cities.

The area has changed with population growth. Forty years ago, everyone knew everyone that lived here, but it’s not the same now. There are more retail and service options in the area. Technology has really changed what the community can offer to someone wanting to live here.

TOP THREE REASONS

With so much to choose from, this was the toughest question for the couple, but they finally settled on their answers after giving it some thought.

Renee responded with friends, recreational opportunities, and the people, whereas Scott chose the lakes, people and outdoor recreation.

MARZOUK COMING TO THE AREA

Marzouk has been attending Alexandria Technical & Community College and is enrolled in the Registered Nursing program. Although originally born in Ghana and raised in Togo West Africa during his younger years, he moved to Minneapolis when he was nine to live with family. After graduating from high school in 2013, he decided to follow in his cousin’s footsteps and move to Alexandria, where his cousin was attending ATCC for diesel mechanics.

LIFE AND PLANS

Marzouk’s Uncle Faisale is a nurse, and he thought that would be a career he would enjoy. He attended ATCC for his generals and graduated with his AAS. He considered getting his Bachelor of Arts in Nursing, so he transferred down to St John’s University in St Joseph and called it home for the next year and a half. While there, he played soccer for the Johnnies and was a Teacher’s Assistant in anatomy.

His long-term plans involve a career in nursing. While he’ll graduate this Spring from ATCC’s RN nursing program, that won’t be the end of education for him. He plans to earn his nurse practitioner degree or attend St. Catherine’s doctoral program to specialize in pediatrics. His ambition is to open his own children’s facility, because he feels a connection to youth and believes, “children are precious, and you can really build a relationship at a young age to be an impact on that child for life”.

LIVING IN THE COMMUNITY

There are many opportunities open to Marzouk. After graduation, he will move to the metro to be with family, friends and his girlfriend, Sinloria Macrae. He doesn’t think that leaving Alexandria is forever, and the connections he made here are for life. Regrettably, the opportunities he’s looking for to further his education aren’t available here. He likes his experience at ATCC and found it easy to move back when he decided to study nursing here. There are great student resources on campus and the teachers are accessible. He finds living in Alexandria more affordable than other cities, and while he lived with a roommate, he never struggled to find affordable housing. He found good employment at Knute Nelson Grand Arbor as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) while he attended LPN school. He also had the opportunity to coach soccer at the high school and the Alexandria soccer association in the summers.

20

LivingAlexArea.org

CHANGES IN THE COMMUNITY

Marzouk has seen a change in the diversity of the Alexandria area since the first time he lived here in 2015. Although, he says that “diversity is difficult to coin”, he does know that the demographics are changing. He sees that the people living in the community not only understand that individuals are unique, but also are starting to recognize and appreciate those differences.

outdoors This has long been a destination for hunters, fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts. Historical documents left by early visitors note that it was the natural beauty of the landscape that brought them here. For decades, families have been attracted to the abundance of beautiful lakes that provide respite, recreation and relaxation, and sportsmen have celebrated successful hunts and fishing excursions. Bikers, hikers, bird and wildlife watchers and photographers also find a lot to appreciate here.

This 55-mile paved trail connects the communities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville, Melby, Ashby, Dalton and Fergus Falls. It was built on an abandoned railroad bed. The corridor is ideal for cyclists, walkers, runners and in-line skaters. It is closed to motorized traffic, with the exception of snowmobiles in the winter. The scenic trail passes through rolling countryside, hardwoods, wildlife areas, farmland, over bridges, and past waterways. Wildflowers and wildlife are a common sight. Communities along the trail offer restaurants, convenience stores, restrooms and shelters. Trail heads are located in Alexandria, Osakis, Garfield, Brandon and Evansville and include parking areas, restrooms and shelters. The trail connects to the Lake Wobegon Trail, which runs from Osakis to St. Joseph. An additional connection from the Lake Wobegon Trail to the Morrison County Trail has also been completed, resulting in 130 paved miles. www.centrallakestrail.com

Our Legacy of Hospitality For generations, the Alexandria area served as a summer retreat for some of America’s wealthy families. They arrived by railroad and were transported to luxurious resort-hotels where they were treated with world-class service. The first passenger train arrived here on Nov. 5, 1878. The Great Northern traversed Douglas County east to west, while the Minneapolis-St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie line ran north to south.

For the next half a century, the area was defined by elegant resorthotels featuring chauffeur quarters and American-plan meals, lawn tennis tournaments and lazy afternoons on the lake. Fishing guides, gourmet picnics, live bands, afternoon teas and leisurely rounds of golf were common.

With time, however, resort-hotels gave way to summer cottages and cabin resorts, and new summer traditions were established. But through it all, the Alexandria Lakes Area has remained a haven of relaxation and family entertainment, and is a splendid summertime destination!

In 1880, James Letson came to Alexandria on a fishing trip. He was so impressed with the area that he decided to construct the Letson House, the first hotel in Alexandria. It was built a block off Broadway and today operates as the Alexson Apartments.

The second lakeshore resort to spring up in the area was Hotel Blake, built by John Blake in 1903 between Lake Carlos and Lake Le Homme Dieu. This property is now home to privately owned condominiums.

After seeing much success with the Letson House, James Letson purchased property on the south shore of Lake Geneva where he built Hotel Alexandria in 1883. The hotel was renamed Geneva Beach Hotel in 1896. The structure burned to the ground in 1911 and was rebuilt in 1915 and named the Dickinson Inn. This property still houses a resort today – Geneva Beach Resort.
