SMALL TOWN LIVING WITH BIG CITY AMMENITIES When asking residents - or visitors – to describe the area in one word, it is “community.” You not only can connect with nature, but with people you meet, and friends you can make. Living in the Alexandria area, one can have the best of both worlds with a close-knit community with supportive and friendly connections, opportunities for career growth, outdoor recreation for all seasons to fit your active lifestyle, big-city amenities without the metro-city traffic and congestion, all while still having that relaxed smalltown feel. The Alexandria area has been called the “Top Micropolitan in Minnesota” & the “7th Best Small Town in America,” both describing the area perfectly. There’s so much to do and see in the Alexandria area. Home to over 350 lakes, with miles of bicycle and walking trails, public beaches, and beautiful parks, you will be able to find many adventures and outdoor activities to explore and keep family busy each season. Whatever your style, there’s many retail stores with the latest fashions and home décor, a wide selection of dining and entertainment from unique restaurants, pubs, and wine bars. You can also enjoy touring the Carlos Creek Winery (voted the “Best Winery in Minnesota”), Panther Distillery (Minnesota’s very first “legal” whiskey distillery), or Copper Trail Brewery Company (Alexandria area’s first brewery in 70 years). The amount of care and support that this community puts back into the area is ten-fold. The Alexandria area community has always, and continues to, play a crucial role in the success of education development and workforce training. A fitting example is the new development of the Alexandria Area High School (AAHS). The Academy Model that AAHS has implemented, prepares students for their future, whether they continue their education or directly enter the workforce. Engaging students earlier and to a deeper level, allows them to be more excited about school, and to discover their passion and find possibilities in future careers.

Meet the
Auran Family
y husband Nathanael and I were born and raised in Minot and Maxbass, North Dakota. We had planned to live there forever, but with the oil boom came more traffic, higher prices, and more crime. We wanted to relocate somewhere that had the small town feel where we could raise our family. We both worked from home, I as a childcare provider and my husband a web developer, so we could essentially choose anywhere to live.
M
We had never been to Alexandria, but my parents had been many times and they loved it! Upon their suggestion, we came here to visit in April 2014. As we explored the area, it became very clear that Alexandria was the perfect fit for our family. We packed up and moved to Alexandria in June 2014 with our son Tai (13), and our daughters Savannah (11), Adeline (7), Emory (5), and Cambree (3). My parents also moved here a week later! We had a few requirements we wanted from our new town; excellent schools, four distinct seasons, a small town feel but with lots of action in the community, a great church, closer proximity to a large metropolis and Alexandria met every item on the list! We recently opened a new business in Alexandria in December 2016 – Escape Room Alexandria. Every week, we get to see people come together and use their communication and problem-solving skills to successfully escape! It has been so much fun for us! We are so thankful we live in a place like Alexandria, where the community is growing and thriving. It’s the perfect place to become an entrepreneur and it has been the perfect fit for our family.
We LOVE so many things about Alexandria. We love having so many beautiful lakes to play and fish on. We love spending winter Friday nights snowboarding down the runs at Andes Tower Hills. We love biking and rollerblading on the Central Lakes Trail. We love spending Thursday evenings on the courthouse lawn listening to local musicians. We love the Douglas County Fair. We love camping at Lake Carlos State Park. We feel so lucky to live in a beautiful place where it feels like you’re on vacation every day.

DEVELOPMENT & GROWTH The decision to relocate a business or move a family is a big decision. Finding a community with a proven record of success is important. If you’re in search of a great community to start or move a business, there is no better choice than the Alexandria area. Our local officials are doing their best to make Alexandria and Douglas County the best place to open a business, and offers a pro-business environment with an overall lower tax burden. Alexandria has received several top business awards, including being named the “#10 Best Place to Start a Business” in Minnesota by Nerdwallet, and “City of Excellence” by the League of Minnesota Cities.
Douglas County’s business community has seen incredible growth during the past few decades, and across various sectors. Alexandria area is home to a vibrant destination, retail and lifestyle centers, and state-of-the-art manufacturing companies, but also transportation, education, and healthcare, that results in a diverse economy.
The Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission works collaboratively to facilitate job growth in our region, and offers numerous programs for businesses to move or expand operations within the state. Our office provides the support needed to assist in business and community growth with such tools as tax increment financing, tax abatement, and industrial bonds. We also provide financial assistance through our revolvingloan funds for business startup, growth, and expansion. Tax credits and competitive incentive programs can be a piece of the puzzle, but one of the finest incentives available is offered through Alexandria Technical & Community College (ATCC). As part of the Minnesota State College and Universities System, ATCC can provide expanding companies access to customized training programs that will prepare a company’s workforce from the start.

Meet
Andres Rodriguez
am originally from Bogota Columbia. After attending high school and undergrad there, I applied for, and was accepted into a graduate program at the University of Missouri. Bogota has roughly 10 million people in the City, so I was looking for a community that I could be part of that would allow me to fully immerse myself in. I wanted to know what it was like to be Minnesotan. This area is so rich in culture – I mean, seriously, who says uff dah and eats lutefisk?
I
After graduating from graduate school, I looked for a position that would fit my job skill set. I wanted a larger “small” community, and Alexandria was that fit. I have a husband that works in television in the Cities, so we do split our time, but the small town feel of Alexandria is what I was looking for. I have been in the Alexandria area for three years now as an associate scientist in genomics with LGC Douglas Scientific. We are a global leader in delivering genomic solutions for R&D, diagnostics and applied markets. The focus of the LGC Alexandria site is the development, manufacturing and servicing of laboratory instrumentation and consumables. My role touches almost every department with our company – from marketing to customer support. I love that LGC Douglas Scientific started off as a very small company in the Midwest, but we are now part of a larger company that employs over 2,400 people, operating out of 22 countries worldwide. We have a very family friendly environment and are a close-knit organization.
What I really love about living in the Alexandria area is experiencing the culture. Of course, the winters are a challenge – they can be quite miserable, but you make do. I ice fish in the winter, and I love all our beaches and outdoor recreation in the summer. I run on the trail and enjoy the many parks we have. Everyone knows everyone, so once you find your group that you fit with, you make many friends.

LEADING IN MANUFACTURING Alexandria is home to four of the world’s leading manufacturers of automated packaging machines, marking the region one of the leaders in technology development and innovation in the manufacturing industry. Equipment that is designed, engineered, and manufactured by Alexandria area companies is utilized by businesses across the United States and around the world. The area has a diverse set of manufacturing businesses and organizations ranging from packaging, aluminum extrusion, to genomic solutions. Having the second largest payroll among business sectors in Minnesota, manufacturing provides $20 billion in wages to its employees. Employing 19% of the population, manufacturing is an integral part of the community, and provides a stable and consistent economy for future growth and expansion. Providing highly skilled, high-paying jobs, manufacturing significantly contributes to the area’s high standard of living and economic vitality. Alexandria area manufacturers are also involved in partnership with the surrounding high schools and Alexandria Technical & Community College to provide speakers, mentors, and hands on experience to students and instructors, realizing that a link between future workforce and manufacturing businesses in the area is important to help give insight to potential job opportunities in the community.

Meet the
Beckman Family
H
ello! We are Samantha and Rory Beckman. We were Born and raised in west central Minnesota, Fergus Falls and Wendell. We always had dreams of establishing our careers and starting our family in the Alexandria area.
After my graduation from the University of Jamestown, we soon became engaged. This journey led us to begin our lives in Jamestown, ND. I began a full-time role as the marketing manager at Jamestown Regional Medical Center and Rory began a new career as a driver at UPS. In 2014, while working fulltime, I enrolled online to the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND, where I earned my Master’s in Business focused in Healthcare Administration. This was a personal goal of mine to open doors to a future in healthcare administration.
We loved Jamestown, but there were a few major pieces that were missing. One being close to family, and second the proximity to the hobbies we love to do including dirtbike racing, horseback riding, volleyball leagues and tournaments and lake/farm activities. With the arrival of our daughter, Payton, in 2015, moving back to Minnesota became a high priority. With moving, there is always risk involved so following many discussions, we knew a move would not be easy, but the sooner the better with beginning our careers and starting a family.
In July 2016, with help from local Alexandria friends, we learned of a position at Knute Nelson in Marketing was available. It must have been a sign. After researching more about Knute Nelson, this was a perfect career fit for what I was looking for. I accepted the Vice President of Marketing role in 2016. Timing is everything. Soon after, Rory accepted a position with Ollies Service as a service mechanic. Both amazing family orientated organizations that couldn’t be more fitting for what we love to do.
We are living our dream! We purchased 30 acres on a lake near Brandon, Minnesota where we are currently building our new home and small hobby farm. We are also expecting our second child in January and couldn’t think of a better place to continue growing our family. 14

Meet the
Jenc Family
y husband Steve and I both grew up on a dairy farm, never thinking we would move off our 100-acre hobby farm near Belgrade, Minnesota. Soon after I started working in Alexandria as the Alexandria Public Schools Community Education Director, we began searching for a cabin or lake house. Our retirement dream was always to own property on a lake, so it made good sense that the purchase could also be an additional overnight option for me to stay on inclement weather days and late meeting nights rather than the 50-minute drive home.
M
We purchased a house on Maple Lake in March 2015 with the mindset of additional property but soon conversations started about moving. We put our farm site up for sale and within 4 days, 4 families looked and had an offer on the table. We knew then we were making the right decision! Steve works as the Corporate Service Support Manager at Midwest Machinery, traveling to their 13 Minnesota stores working with service departments. There were multiple reasons that made us consider moving to Alexandria. Two of our main considerations was Alexandria Public Schools and the community. We were excited about the options the district offered meeting the needs and interests of our kids. Our son Austin is a freshman and our daughter Ashlyn in a senior at Alexandria Area High School. We love the Maple Lake neighborhood where we purchased our house. People were so kind, compassionate and welcoming to us, soon feeling like part of our family. In addition, the people we have met through volunteering in church, service clubs, business connections and organizations has been wonderful.
We love the Alexandria area! Alexandria is large enough to offer quality professional, medical, and service needs, while still having the feel of a Greater MN small town. Our business community really speaks to the personalization, welcoming, small town feel. There is always something to do, be involved with and explore! Whatever passion your passion or lifelong learning journey may be, it’s here! We have enjoyed and taken advantage of the arts, shopping, wellness/fitness, flying, lakes, community events, and celebrations. 18

Remnants of old building foundations and the remains of an earthen dam constructed to power a sawmill are still visible. It has picnic tables, shelters, charcoal grills, electricity, restrooms, drinking water, softball field and interpretive, hiking and cross country ski trails. Visit www.co.douglas.mn.us/dc/parks. Inspiration Peak One of Minnesota’s best overlooks is north of Alexandria and west of Urbank.
It has an elevation of 1,750 feet, about 400 feet above the surrounding countryside. The walk to the top is about a quarter mile; benches are located along the trail. Those who make the trek are rewarded with an expansive vista of hardwoods, farmland and lakes. The scenery is beautiful anytime of the year, however the tapestry of fall colors can be especially breathtaking. Sinclair Lewis once called the view one of the most spectacular sights in the state. There is a picnic area near the parking lot.

Seven Sisters Prairie A panoramic view of Lake Christina and the surrounding countryside awaits those who venture to the top of Seven Sisters Prairie near Ashby. The seven knolls are 190 feet above the surrounding terrain and gravel prairie. The unusual flora has brought botanists to the area since the late 1800s, and Lake Christina’s abundance of water plants has attracted canvasback ducks over the years. Visit www.nature.org for more information. Staffanson Prairie Staffanson Prairie is located in the rolling hills of Douglas County northwest of Kensington. The 95-acre preserve is a dry prairie that surrounds a prairie pothole (a wetland area that supports breeding mallards and blue-winged teal). A butterfly of special concern, the regal fritillary, has been found at the preserve. The area is managed by The Nature Conservatory and is open to the public. Visit www.nature.org for more information.
