The 2019 edition of the Bucharest International Print Biennale, organized by the Union of Visual Artists in Romania, in partnership with the National Museum of Romanian Literature, the Romanian Cultural Institute, Galateca Gallery and the National University of Arts in Bucharest had some novelties compared to previous editions. First of all, the presence in the exhibition of two great graphic artists and engravers, who disappeared from us, but who left their mark on the generations they prepared: IOAN ATANASIU DELAMARE and IURI ISAR, two different and extremely personal artistic universes. Graphics, a field increasinglywithdrawn from the interest of artists, becomes a superior form of artistic expression. The return to the simes of the two artists is in itself a manifest gesture by which the organizers wanted to show that the interest in traditional forms of engraving leads to authentic creation and often exceeds the threshold of the experiment. The curatorial concept - the presentation of only the invited artists, awarded at previous editions, produced a superior quality of the exhibition, a fact noticed by all those who spoke at the opening. So, although multiple techniques and themes were presented inmany countries, the common denominator was that of aesthetics, semantics and mastery of graphic art regardless of the area from which they were sent. I congratulate the organizers for choosing this joy of sight to take place at the National Museum of Romanian Literature. Prof. Dr Ioan Cristescu / Director of the National Museum of Romanian Literature

Bucharest International Print Biennale - BIPB 2019 / Crossing borders was an event organized by the Union of Visual Artists in Romania in partnership with the National Museum of Romanian Literature, the Romanian Cultural Institute from Bucharest, Galateca Gallery and the National University of Arts in Bucharest. The event created imaginary routes engraved between artists from all over continents and all areas of expression of traditional techniques of printing and aims to continue to restore the connection between craftsmanship, tradition and the one who reinvents the print and places in the multitude of contemporary art galleries. Bucharest International Print Biennale brought together, for the third time, important names of the international and national community of engravers. This year’s edition has exhibited over 100 artists from all generations and all globes’s meridians, ensuring the project an important and great diversity, both conceptually and from a perspective how to use printing techniques. The 2019 edition had three important events, the central exhibition opened on November 26th at MNLR together with the event - IN MEMORIAM-, Ion Atanasiu Delamare / Iuri Isar and the exhibition -Engraving Lesson- with artists guests, participants in previous editions, at Galateca Gallery. IN MEMORIAM

Calul, Aquafort, Aquatint, 35x26 cm, 2008 10 | BIPB 2019

„Ioan Atanasiu Delamare creates a good quality narrative graphics - each work is required to be “read” because it carries a story in it that proves the richness through the multiple possibilities of interpretation.”(Adrian-Silvan Ionescu, Cotidianul, Tuesday, July 25, 1995.)

IURI ISAR 1961 - 2015

IN MEMORIAM

Dinner, Engraving / Color, 50x70 cm, 2014 12 | BIPB 2019

Iuri Isar, graphic artist, stage designer and professor, a graduate of the Bucharest Academy of Arts and member of the Union of Visual Artists in Romania, is recognized for the value and authenticity of his art works. His compositions combine the imaginary with the real. The artist creates a distinct show, marked by the features of a prominent artistic personality. He develops a fabulous imaginary, in which the elements of reality combine with those of a dream or a story. In Yuri Isar’s engravings we can see in the foreground the human figure, as a simplified portrait and mirrored in a multitude of expressions. Iuri Isar searched and explored all the ways of expressing printing techniques, and the art works made between 1993-2014, offer us a real lesson about aquatint, mezzotint, colored engraving, soft varnish and colograv
