Pub’s heritage bid is rejected CAMPAIGNERS last night learned they had failed in their bid to protect a pub from the bulldozers. Members of the Potteries Pub Preservation Group (PPPG) applied for the second time to English Heritage to secure listed building status for the Coachmakers Arms. But the organisation claimed the building, in Lichfield Street, Hanley, had undergone too many alterations to be protected. The traditional four-room pub is earmarked for demolition to make way for the planned City Sentral shopping and leisure precinct. A campaign to save the pub was launched in 2008. It is believed the building was built in the early 19th Century and was originally two homes. It became a beer house between 1860 and 1870. English Heritage said last night: “A pub of this common type and date would need to retain an almost complete interior and sufficiently intact façade to justify inclusion on the list.” Mervyn Edwards, spokesman for PPPG, said: “We thank everyone who has supported the campaign, but the pub’s fate is now in the lap of the gods.”
