RESTORATION COFFEE & BOOKS flow

Light flows gently, guiding the viewer, as if following a river of literature. As one gets deeper into the space, the ceiling light coves define spaces to gather below the ambience. The space flows through expressive curvilinear elements on the walls that offer the soft suggestion of circulation, subtle touches of color emphasize important zones, create hierarchy, and personality within each space to define different functions and helps add to the creative productivity within each space.

Restoration Transition House + Coffee & Books “Restoration,” is a universal approach to the issue of homelessness in Transitional Age Youth, youth ages 18-24 who have aged out of the foster care system. This new model for transitional living suggests that by providing living resources, community support, educational tools, and life and job skills within the transitional facility, through implementation of the design theories of self-actualization, change theory, place-attachment, design for healing, and the ecological color theory, the well-being of the transitional age youth will produce more positive long-term outcomes. The overall outcome goals are a decreased youth homeless population, job retention, continued education opportunities, and independence. Revit, Photoshop, Hand Sketching

CONCEPT

4

Restoration Coffee and Books was conceptualized through the stages of metamorphosis, of which a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. The term metamorphosis is a greek word, meaning transformation. Like a butterfly, the youth will enter as an egg, new to the facility but ready to grow. Next, the youth will be in the caterpillar stage where the youth begin to engage in their community, attend workshops, tap into resources, and commune with peers. The chrysalis or transition stage, happens when the youth are now starting to achieve those goals they made and are working towards achieving well-being for when they transition out of Restoration. Lastly, the youth become adults in the butterfly stage. At this point, they are equipped with all the resources and tools they will need to have independence outside of Restoration. The journey doesn’t end here though, as self-actualized adults, the former foster youth are encouraged to come back and mentor those in earlier stages of development. Self-actualization happens when an individual realizes their potential, self-fulfillment, and personal growth. This is the desire to become everything one is capable of becoming.

1102 West Ave is located in Central Downtown Austin in the Historic neighborhood of Judges Hill. The house for this project was built in 1900 and is made up of 4 floors, including a basement that was unfinished.

The location was chosen due to the biking and walking scores of 90, close proximity to public transportation, a block away from the capital, parks, a community college, a book store, and a grocery store.

The mural (below) is within the coffee shop, reflecting on the historic roots of Austin and the building, itself.

NEXT Office The design for NEXT was conceptualized through relationships of the architecture in combination with the golden spiral found in nature. Once different zones were established, the diagrams were interpreted literally and as fractals within the spaces. Different zones were established to aligned with the spatial typologies to meet the needs of the NEXT office. The result is a space built on an innate human response to nature and the peace, harmony, and balance that comes with that bond.

Communauté Communauté is a shared housing complex in France for people and their dogs experiencing social isolation. The design strategy of architecture d’origine controlee takes advantage of the local environment and community to drive material selection, design, and construction techniques. Passivhaus design strategies turn the independent elements of the site become a single, well-articulated system. Humancentric design gives residents value to their stay in the community and helps connect them with other residents. Revit, Photoshop, Fresco, Illustrator, InDesign, Hand Sketching

Eden Retail Store Eden’s brick and mortar location sells products for a sustainable lifestyle. Eden prioritizes social, environmental, and community well-being over everything else. Eden’s design features framed spaces that elegantly show circulation through delicate, clean lines. As a tree can frame a landscape, Eden frames the natural products within the store to promote the natural composition. Sophistication and freshness are amplified through French style interiors, incorporating simple natural finishes and sustainably sourced materials. Eden features elaborately coffered ceilings to elegantly frame each unique space within the store, while the floor displays frame each product. The products will be displayed in reusable pastel glass containers in back-lit displays that transfer a filtered glow to the interiors. Sophistication is implimented through rich finish materials, including natural wood flooring, bold textiles, and touches of gold. Revit, Lumion, Fresco, Hand Sketching, Photoshop

Togetherness The “Togetherness” exhibition features Rani Ban’s most inspiring works. The exhibit focuses on human connections that bring communities together and drive for change. The anchor piece for the exhibit is a playful screen print which shows figures dancing and floating around freely. This captures Rani’s approach to her free flowing designs. For this project, a logo, typeface, iconography, and signage system were created to be displayed within the museum. InDesign, Photoshop, Fresco,
