Sometimes it's hard to write reviews of common chain restaurants because the assumption is that everyone has tried everything there already. Given that I'm sitting in a Panera writing this, I thought a brief review of their offerings at breakfast would be appropriate. As many of you know Panera was started in many ways as a bakery and it stays true to its roots in the morning with a variety of pastries available as well as the daily breads that originally made them famous. It's worth pointing out that Panera offers free high speed internet which makes it a preferred place for many people to work in the mornings, they do ask that you not use their free internet service from 11am-2pm which are their busiest hours and generally find most tables full of lunch customers. Some of the outstanding offerings at Panera in the mornings include their cinnamon crunch bagel, which is unique in that they are able to have a sweet underside of the bagel unlike all the others I've tried in which the bottom of the bagel is nothing more then a plain bagel. This is an outstanding offering and everyone I've spoken with agrees that it hardly needs cream cheese or butter to make it an enjoyable breakfast. The second set of solid offerings are their scones and muffins. The scones are able to have the unique aspect of being slightly crunchy on the outside while being soft and chewy on the insider. I'm told that the blueberry scones are the best sellers, how the cinnamon chip scones are also popular. Perhaps the most interest breakfast entrĂƒŠe at Panera is their pumpkin muffie. Yes, muffie. A muffie for those whom aren't familiar (I wasn't) a muffie is for all intensive purposes the top part of the muffin cut apart from the bottom (what's inside of the wrapping). I realize most people are like me and don't really like the inside part as much as the top, so these are interesting. Especially when considering the price which allows you to purchase two muffies for the price of one standard muffin, I can understand why it is a popular option. Lastly the only downer with Panera when it comes to their breakfast options is the coffee. Although they offer a light roast, dark roast, hazelnut and decafe option as well as a refillable mug....the quality of the coffee is much worse then I'd expect. I find it largely bland and lacking in flavor which is disappointing considering the number of great coffee franchises currently available, many times in the same shopping centers that Panera resides.
