The world's greatest value investor, Warren buffet, likes to use the word "franchise" a lot. However, in the strict dictionary definition one must understand that a franchise doesn't necessarily mean its a franchising company. The word franchise can also be replaced with the word brand name in a way to Warren Buffet uses the term most often when he talks to shareholders, and does interviews at college campuses, or with the mainstream financial news media. This does not mean that Warren Buffett is against franchising companies, far from it. After all, he does own Dairy Queen, and Berkshire Hathaway is heavily invested in many companies that use franchising as a business expansion model to move their goods and services. Interestingly enough, franchise companies work very hard to prop up their brand name and this is why franchising companies and brand names are so synonymous in today's business world. Indeed, the franchising industry has gotten quite a big boost from Warren buffet use of the word over the last couple of decades. Therefore, everyone is involved in a franchise, as a franchisor, vendor to the industry, or a franchisee of an independently owned franchised outlet, should thank Mr. Buffett for all of his comments. Especially for all those appearances in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Business News, Business Week, Forbes, MSNBC, CNBC, Financial Times, the Economist, and Investor's Business Daily. So, to answer your question; "why does Warren Buffett like franchises?" The answer is he likes stronger brand names which are well respected by the consumers, customers, and clients. Because he realizes that there is value in a strong and loyal customer base. It might be worthy to add that Warren buffet is a big fan of Dairy Queen and McDonald's, as he himself is a loyal customer. Thus, he knows from both experience, and observation that strong brand names in the market place equate to you stronger shareholder's equity and quarterly profits. And quite frankly, you should too, so please consider all this.
