Site Concept

Looking at our site, we felt that there was a real need to bring back some of the historic qualities and preserve existing cultural spaces. The site had been cut off by the development of infrastructure, so we wanted to remove existing boundaries and increase connection with the surrounding urban fabric. By emphasise walkability and human scale, and through the placement of public programs and public spaces. We propose for this portion of Holesovice to become a new city center. It was important for us to also consider temporary and long term use of the urban space, as there would be a lot of through traffic from the transport hubs, as well as more permanent use by the locals. In mixing a myriad of programs and functions, we wanted to create a save city, with life throughout the day. All these activities and focused to the agora, acting as the public square, the place of culture, life and activity. Metaphorically, a thermometer of the culture and society.

Concept Statement

Finding an intricate balance between a dence downtown full of life, and an agricultural / human scale village of communities. We aim to meet a highly functional urban landscape where building becomes home and city becomes building. Where a path can lead through a library, or a farmer can look over the city. By setting up programs with almost opposing qualities, we are seeking to create a new breed of urbanisation. One where development and evolution are considered. Where diversity and individuality are celebrated, and where community and innovation can take place on a human level. Cities are for people to live in. all other activities must come second. Beginning with a new National Library as the heart of our site. We puzzled together all functions needed for a healthy happy lifestyle, from office and commercial space, to makerspaces and industrial space. All crowned by co-housing communities with human scale village like typology. Atop the library, there is placed the gardens and agricultural spaces. Growing physical nourishment atop an institution of cultural and intellectual nourishment. By dividing the site into three main levels, we were able to bring the urban fabric of public spaces, into the building. Creating a city as a building, where all parts come together symbiotically to create value equal to a product of the parts, rather than just a sum of the individual programs.

Scale and Time

+ Holesovice

+ Old Town

An urban fabric from industrial times, lending itself to commercial and industrial use.

Tight streets leading to a common square. Lively and human scale.

+ Karlin

+ Letna A tighter courtyard block grid. Inviting small shops and quiet streets.

Large blocks, with interesting inner life. Long distances between streets making less walkable. Greenery and large public space.

Typical “mixed use Urbanism

We wanted to bridge the scales, between the surrounding city and our development. Creating opportunities for speed changes from the high speed transport to our slow human scale spaces.

Vertical Streets and Connections

Typical “mixed use Urbanism

Cultural = 72,150.00 m2 Residential = 158,940.00 m2 Commercial = 11,395.00 m2

The greater diversity and life we can bring to cities, the more resilient and alive they will become. To compare, we studied how a typical prague block from Karlin or Letna might look on our site. With a horizontal division of

ground floor commercial and upper residential. And in comparison we would like propose a vertical diversity which is more porous and permeable. Creating many small opportunities for life and activity to take place.

Housing Typologies

There are four primary housing typologies that we introduced to our site. The stand alone cabin or family house, the typical stacked apartment with vertical core, the co-living invidivual rooms with shared common spaces and the co-housing community with private houses and shared community spaces.

Creating a tall building we considered that the connection to street life is still very important. This way the tower includes green parks every four stories as this is the maximum amount where children can hear what is going on outside and would be interested to go join the games and activities. Internally we created two story cores on each floor which bridge different functions and ac as mini public squares. Again considering that this space will encourage interaction and activity. The goal of the tower is to increase residential occupation of our site which will help fuel the business and cultural activities, while still creating good living conditions for homo sapiens.
