MSA President’s voice:
It gives me great pleasure to speak to all of Med Time’s loyal readers at its new onset this semester. I would like to congratulate all of Alfaisal family and all on the occasion of Eid Aladha and I hope everyone had a pleasant vacation. I extend my congratulations to all the MSA election winners. I am sure that the medical students have chosen the best of the best to represent them.
I thank my great medical family for renewing their trust in my leadership by choosing me to lead them. It is a huge responsibility and I hope that I can, with MSA and your support, to rise to your expectations. Insh Allah, everyone will notice a lot of improvements and new surprises in the coming days!
The Development Committee
Alfaisal Leadership: Dr. Connie Bowe, “You’re going to make a difference insh’Allah.” Partners Harvard Medical International (PHMI) Senior Consultant
“Each time I feel a little more at home”
■ PHMI Senior Consultant Dr. Connie Bowe (left) interviewed by The Press ■Who is Dr. Connie Bowe? ■“Professionally, I’m a pediatric neurologist by training, who got very interested in medical education about fifteen years ago be-
cause of the frustration of trying to teach a subject that’s complicated but feeling like it’s important especially for physicians to learn and finding it difficult to communicate the major concepts. Personally, I have been married to a psychiatrist for almost thirty-nine years and have three sons and four grandchildren.” ■How do you find the program of this college compared with other programs of other universities? ■“Each time I feel a little more at home: I start to recognize students and the faculty I’ve come to know. We’re still involved even
when we’re not physically here, but it doesn’t translate the same. And obviously what I’m most interested in watching is sort of how the students are learning.” ■What are your future plans for the College of Medicine? ■As the number of students and faculty is instantly increasing, future plans for the College of Medicine are being observed in or-
der to detect any obstacles caused by this increasing number that could lead to changes in plans. “Between talking to the faculty and talking to the students, we’re now embarking on a kind of thorough re-assessment of the curriculum and other things that we’re going to want to change and can change.” ■Since you are a neurologist, how would you evaluate the way we are learning the nervous system? ■As the curriculum of several phases was developed, there essentially was the basic science faculty who were teaching medical
students, added to them the clinical faculty who came from different hospitals in the kingdom. This combination of faculty, who know where the students are coming from and also where they are going to, helped cover all aspects a future medical doctor needs to learn. “I think everyone agrees that the curriculum will be richer if we have the experience and sort of the perspective of people that are using the medical facts and information on day-to-day basis.” ■On every interview, we have a “voice yourself” category. So, could you please voice yourself and say whatever you want to the
students and faculty? ■“I’m hoping that this curriculum will certainly provide you with everything you need to know in terms of basic and clinical sci-
ences, but I hope I’ll preserve the best reasons why you came to medical school, so that when you get out of here you’re going to make a difference in the way medicine is practiced, inshallah.”
The Convocation Ceremony: “Faith, Knowledge, and Performance” Reinforced “make use of all the possibilities”
“it is an honour to be on the dean’s list”
■ Medical student Bara Almakadma (left) giving his speech
■ All those who attended the convocation
■ On Wednesday October 14, a convocation ceremony at Alfaisal was held, and will continue to be held as an annual occasion
Insha’Allah, where all administration members, faculty, staff and students attended to welcome new faculty members, new students, and honor current ones. Students who achieved a GPA of 3.75 or higher out of 4 the year prior were placed on the Dean’s list. As such, they received appreciation and acknowledgement certificates by Acting Provost, Dr. Ronald Bulbulian, for their triumphs and great academic performance. “You might be able to do little with faith, but you can do nothing without it” Mr. Rami K. Alturki Each year, Alfaisal University invites unique guests to attend and talk about their achievements and voice to all students, especially prospective ones, the keys for success and tips for college life. This year, Mr. Rami Alturki was our guest speaker. Mr. Rami is the President of “Alturki Group”, a leading family investment company which has been operating in Saudi Arabia for over thirty five years. King Faisal, the symbol of our Alfaisal University, had wisely set for us our university’s motto: Faith, Knowledge and Performance as he saw these are the foundations to raising our youth. After Mr. Rami’s speech, he had reinforced King Faisal’s ideology. Bara Almakadma, second year medical student, gave a speech following Mr. Rami’s. Here’s what he had to say: “Mr. Alturki has faith in that ‘once you follow your passion without compromising your values, you will be unstoppable!’ He had a strategy of acquiring knowledge by experiencing change, pushing him to learn more, and by surrounding yourself by smart people. Organizing your time gives the chance to make use of all the possibilities that our university provides by achieving as much knowledge as possible, as well as being active in the Alfaisal community.”
Movie and Game Nights By The Knights! ■ On October 28 and November 4, 2009, the medical students had a movie and
game night respectively! Both events were arranged by the social committee, better known as the Med Knights and had a great impact on the students’ social life as it broke the barrier between all batches! No more labeling of batches! We are all medical students!
“we want more of such events!”
Using the “smartboards” for blockbusters, staying awake in class rooms (for a change!), socializing in class (like usual!), and the abundance of popcorn! It would be surprising if the next movie night does not bring in the whole student body. As for video gaming, a total of about fifty students showed up. ■ Students playing cards
“It was an excellent idea as it will help us get rid of the stress; get to know each other better and for once we can hang out without having a book opened in front of us” Afsan Bin Farid - first year medical student
“this was a great idea!”
Games included were Wining 11, Call of Duty, Need for Speed, chess, several card games, and Counter Strike. Classical, up-to-date, and fun. At the end, the evaluation committee asked those present to fill out an evaluation form to see what they appreciated the most to bend future events to the students’ liking. Truly, feedback is key! Keep it up Med Knights! We all know we need more of these events! ■ Students playing “Call of Duty” on Xbox
MSA's Summer Research and Training Program: “You learn how to think”
■ Medical students at the Kingdom Hospital
Summer Research and Training Program (SRTP) is a student initiative program the MSA started on the summer of 2009. The program focuses on providing Alfaisal medical students with world class research and training opportunities inside and outside of KSA.
■ Medical students at the Kingdom Hospital
■ The Medical Student Association (MSA)
“I applied previous knowledge”
The project offers clinical training to familiarize students with the fundamentals of being a physician. It is a multidisciplinary training plan within several associated hospitals exposing the student to different medical fields each with their own unique environment. “You don't just learn the techniques, such as cell cultures and Flow Cytometry, you learn how to think. I think the great care we got from all the staff at the Stem Cell Therapy Lab was amazing, and meeting them in itself was a privilege." Ahmad Adi - Second year medical student
In terms of the scheduling and distribution of students, all were divided into groups depending on their field of interest, date of application, and their hospital of choice. As for research, two programs were set regarding a stem cell therapy program from July 25 to August 19 at KFSH&RC as well as a molecular biology lab training program from July 11 to August 5 at KACST.
■ Mohammed Al-Sibae at the Al-Habib lab
“I recommend this for new students”
"Signing up for summer projects such as the training program that I attended at the Kingdom Hospital is a great advantage that helps the student to enhance and support the information he has and familiarize himself with the topics that will encounter him later." Tawfiq Abou Assale - First year medical student
Further, clinical training was organized and conducted in two renowned hospitals: Al-Habib Medical Centre and The Kingdom Hospital within the months of July, August, and September. A total of forty -three students participated. Students were trained and exposed to lab work, radiology, microbiology, imaging techniques especially with MRI, in-patient data organization, and observing physician-patient interactions and communication in primary care hospital settings. Insha’Allah, this program will continue throughout the years to come to teach what textbooks generally lack; experience and inspiration.
■ Anas Al-Khani at the Kingdom Hospital lab
World Diabetes Day “stay up-to-date with modern medicine” ■ On Thursday, the 12
th
of November, many of the College of Medicine faculty as well as medical students participated in the 14th World Diabetes Day (WDD). The program was held at Hotel Al-Khozama, in the heart of Riyadh, 7:00 am-3:00 pm. The theme for the program was “Diabetes Prevention Ballet.” “Truly an insightful program on Diabetes in the KSA” Ammar Awaad second year medical student
Highlights of the meeting included talks by Dr. Khalid F. Al Habib on the SPACE Registry, a registry for cardiovascular problems. He pointed out that diabetes, here in the Kingdom, as well as elsewhere, is a major predictor of cardiovascular problems. But per“It was a great opportunity to be engaged in” haps the best part of the event was the talk given by Dr. Fahad Al■ Medical students that attended the WDD program at Al-Khozama Hussein whose clinic deals with a population of about 10,000 people. About 30% of this relatively young population was either pre-diabetic or had type 2 diabetes. Dr. Al-Hussein and his team managed to introduce modest lifestyle changes, including increased physical exercise and observed marked decreases in the symptoms of pre-diabetes. He emphasized the importance of the community members of the team that worked directly with the population in introducing lifestyle changes. “It is a great opportunity to be engaged in a worldwide symposium such as the WDD and to be able to understand how far medicine has progressed to treat one of the most dangerous killers in our society and to stay up-to-date with modern medicine” Tawfik Abou Assale first year medical student
“awesome presentations” ■ Students at WDD program entrance
Finally, The Drama Club is here! ■ “In Alfaisal University we will create arts,
for the art of Drama is indeed most joyful. In the Drama Club you can be artistic with your actions, and in the synchronization you'll attain with your friends. We will be creative, where a revolution in the definition of “drama” in our university will be.
“we will create arts” ■ Bara Almakadma
Second year medical student Drama club founder
The Drama Club, aims to make us more active, to grow social and teamworking skills. In the club, we will learn the basics of Drama. We will grow friendships. To make an excellent performance, one must know how to perform well. You might be naturally good at acting, but through the Drama Club you can become an actor, who has all the necessary skills. Whenever the right skills are achieved, members can start organizing for plays. We will have miniplays once or twice every semester, and a major annual play. If you are an Alfaisal student, and you want to have fun, you can join us. We meet twice every week; on Saturdays and Tuesdays. More information about the skills we learn and the activities we do are on our blog: www.dramaclub.tk”
IFMSA + MSA Collaboration: A Medical Student Haven What’s the IFMSA?
“it was awesome showing them our home”
“Founded in 1951, the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) is an independent, nongovernmental and non-political federation of medical students' associations throughout the world. In 2009, the IFMSA had 97 National Member Organizations from 89 countries on six continents and represented more than 1.2 million medical students worldwide.” (http://www.ifmsa.org)
■ On November 17, 2009, the IFMSA—SA, the Saudi Arabian di-
vision of the federation, were invited to the college and met our Medical Student Association (MSA) to see what our college has to offer as we applied for a membership within their federation.
■ The IFMSA and MSA touring the campus
“future leaders gather for the greater good”
We introduced ourselves and Ayman Awad, the MSA President, gave them a tour of the college’s floors, facilities, labs, and classrooms. After that, we met with Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Abdulhamid Al-Abduljabar and the Dean, Professor Khaled Al -Kattan, as they gave them an overview of the special attributes our college has to offer both socially and academically. Finally, both the IFMSA and MSA toured the glorious King Faisal Palace and discussed in detail both our associations’ goals, tasks, and mission. After a great meeting of the leaders of tomorrow, we had a late lunch at the palace. Insha’Allah, MSA will continue to collaborate with many of the world’s great associations like that of the IFMSA.
■ The IFMSA and MSA meeting to discuss collaboration
“we believe in uniting of med-students”
The President of the IFMSA—SA, Dr. Adil A. Abbod, stated that he was “waiting for this meeting” to announce that applying for membership to their federation for Saudi Arabia would begin on January 10, 2009. Collaborating would further our synced goals and have a stronger impact on the community as whole. ■ The IFMSA—SA President (right) interviewed by the Press
“Participation in such events is crucial” ■“It was quite disappointing to see that very few students, virtually no-one from the college of
Engineering or College of Business, attended the presentation by Dr. Fahad Al- Sherehy, General manager of SABIC Technology and Innovation, and our guest speaker for the past month of November. The topic of his speech was “Sabic Global Technology & Innovation”. As we all know Sabic is the largest and most profitable non-oil company in the Middle East and one of the world’s five largest petrochemicals manufacturers. It is famous in Saudi Arabia as well as internationally for Chemicals, Fertilizers, Performance chemicals, Polymers, Metals as well as other innovative plastics. I am mentioning this is because the presentation was a great opportunity for all Alfaisal students, from all colleges, to show their interest in the field of research and present some ideas on how Alfaisal University could collaborate with Sabic in the future to organize various educational activities. Unfortunately, this research colloquium seemed to be limited to the faculty of Alfaisal University only, as very few students took advantage of this event. Participation in such events is crucial for the development as well as the reputation of our university and a good opportunity to show the international community the potential that Alfaisal students withhold.”
