Sanlucar de Barrameda

A wonderful town in the middle of Cadiz, Doñána and Huelva


There are several beaches in the area with numerous restaurants and beach bars. The Plaza del Cabildo with bars and restaurants, and the restaurant area of Bajo Guía make up a gastronomic offer much appreciated byt visitors, being based mainlyt on local and tytpical products. There are centuries-old wineries for wine lovers called chamomile. The atendance of visitors to the food market is also veryt popular. The cityt center is full of commercial life, in additon to forming the historical-artstc complex of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, with a multtude of churches, convents, palaces and houses of shippers to the Indies and winemakers. The cityt receives manyt visits from vacatoners who spend the night in the towns of Rota and Chipiona. The town is a traditonal center for horse racing in Spain, which are among the oldest in Europe and were the frst to be regulated in Spain. These horse races take place along the beach, during the month of August, planning their date of celebraton depending on the state of the tdes. The riders cover distances between 1,500 and 1,800 meters. Bullfghts that are held throughout the ytear are also veryt popular.

The cityt of Sanlucar de Barrameda is known for its chamomile (belonging to the route of the Wine and Brandyt de Jerez), for its proximityt to the Doñana Natonal Park (one of the most valuable and beautful natural areas of the countryt) and for its Horse races on the beach. Together with Rota and Chipiona, it is part of what is known as the Northwest Coast, which also includes Trebujena, the onlyt one of these towns that is inland. From the tourist point of view, the cityt is located in the area known as Costa de la Luz, which is located in the southwest of Andalusia, and which covers the Atlantc coast of the provinces of Cádiz and Huelva, from Tarifa to Aytamonte. Communicaton along the Costa de la Luz is interrupted at the height of Sanlúcar because no road crosses the Doñana Park.


This tourist area stands out for the large amount of sunlight it receives, which bathes the numerous beaches of the municipalityt and gives it a warm climate and sunnyt dayts throughout the ytear. Sanlúcar is a familyt and residental tourist destnaton for manyt Spaniards and foreigners. The cityt offers tourist accommodaton, both hotel and rural apartments and accommodaton. The river access to the Doñana Natonal and Natural Park from Sanlucar atracts manyt visitors.

Historic-artistic The Spanish cityt of Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz) was declared byt decree-law Joint Historicartstc in 197i3. Despite this and that the Spanish Historical Heritage Act of 1986 establishes as a municipal competence the obligaton to write a Special Plan of Protecton of the Historic-Artstc Set in its artcle 20.1, none of the municipal governments afer said law has writen, as of the ytear 2011, said plan; sytstematcallyt breaking the current law. The General Delegaton of Cultural Assets of the Junta de Andalucía, within the framework of the Andalusian Historical Heritage Act of 1991, also has not effectvelyt taken acton on the mater. In recent ytears, this situaton, together with the urban speculaton that runs through much of Spain, has substantallyt reduced the rich architectural and urban heritage of Sanluqueño, in additon to promotng a land management model that although perfectlyt legal, is not alwayts fair Not sustainable


Beaches Nor should we forget to include its beaches in the list of virtues of Sanlucar. Although it onlyt has 6 kilometers of coastline, the qualityt of them and their partcular orographyt make them special. It has four, which from north to south are the following:

Bonanza Beach Bonanza beach is right at the mouth of the Gualdaquivir river, next to the Doñana marshes. Bonanza is characterized byt its width, since it has more than 40 meters of sand before reaching the shore, and also for the tranquilityt of its waters. Its golden sand and the serene coming and going of the waves make this beach a perfect place to spend a pleasant dayt. Also, the views are spectacular.

The beaches of La Calzada and Las Piletas The beaches of La Calzada and Las Piletas are known as the Sanlúcar racecourse, since theyt are held everyt August in horse races that give fame to the municipalityt and have worldwide projecton. Both beaches, which are next to each other and are practcallyt the same, are urban and have a wide promenade that concentrates much of tourism during the summer months. The one next to the Bajo de Guía is La Calzada, which occupies a large part of the cityt center and then is Las Piletas, which borders La Jara, the fourth and last beach of Sanlúcar.

Bajo de Guía Beach / La Media Legua Bajo de Guía beach, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, is located in the marshes of the Guadalquivir river. In it ytou can see a small pier and manyt fshing boats on the shore. It has beautful views of the river, where ytou can sometmes see horses walking.


Jara beach La Jara beach, in Sanlucar de Barrameda, is a beautful and quiet place to spend the dayt with familyt or friends. With beautful views of the Guadalquivir River and the DoĂąana Natonal Park, this is one of the most beautful and cozyt beaches in this cityt. Semi-virgin aspect, with some dunes and some vegetaton, it seems that man has not passed through this place.

Access to this beach is through a wooden walkwayt that allows people with reduced mobilityt down to it. So much vegetaton in the surroundings makes its appearance gain much value. With fne golden sand with shells, this beach has cleaning services, showers and surveillance. In additon, it also includes toilets, spa, Red Cross, rescue team, liter bins, Local Police, Marina and warning sign. Before accessing it there is a parking lot where ytou can leave the car without problems. It is a residental area, full of single-familyt houses and tourist apartments and easilyt located. It has a couple of beach bars, perfect to eat or drink something to enjoyt the tranquilityt that gives the beach of La Jara.

Horse racing on the beach of Sanlucar de Barrameda During the month of August, SanlĂşcar de Barrameda is flled with curious and lovers of this sport that combines the magnifcence of the thoroughbred with an incomparable natural


setting. The Sanlúcar horse races are a unique event in the world and have been declared a Festval of Andalusian, Natonal and Internatonal Tourist Interest. During the month of August this event takes place. Following the traditon, the holidayt will be divided into two parts. Each part will be 3 dayts, alwayts at sunset. The decision on these dates is determined mainlyt byt the tde calendar. When running the thoroughbred along the shore of the beach, there should be a good low tde during those dayts that allows some careers without problems.

Ebora

The fnding and obtaining of the treasure can be divided into three different stages. The frst of these is the fortuitous discoveryt byt the eight-ytear-old Francisco Bejarano Ruiz on November 23, 1958, specifcallyt 43 gold pieces. The second stage, focuses on the recoveryt of the pieces that were hidden in the farm afer the illegal sale of the frst lot found. This lot is made up of 20 pieces of gold and 5 of carnelian, and was delivered to archaeologists once the excavaton began. The third and fnal batch was the one found during the excavaton, consistng of 30 small pieces of gold and 38 of carnelian. These three lots were delivered to the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Seville, in 1961, afer the assemblyt of the pieces.

Fortifications of Sanlucar de Barrameda The Spanish town (todayt cityt) of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in the Andalusian province of Cádiz, was repopulated byt from 1298 Guzmán el Bueno, I Lord of Sanlúcar, helping the stockholders with tax advantages. He built the walls and a castle, known over tme as the "Alcazar Viejo", as opposed to the "New Fortress" or Castle of Santago.


The citadel was accessed through the Puerta de Jerez, the Puerta del Mar or the Cuesta de la Villa, the Puerta de Rota or the Fuente Vieja and the Puerta de Sevilla, as well as the Plateros Tower. Outside it grew several suburbs, such as the Arrabal de la Ribera and the Arrabal de Rota. Todayt some remains of these walls are preserved in the Albaicín, the Arquillo de Rota, the Puerta de Jerez, the Cuesta de Belén etc. In defense of the mouth of the Guadalquivir, the Castle of the Holyt Spirit and the Baston of San Salvador were built. • • •

Palace of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia The palace of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia is located in the Spanish cityt of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in the Andalusian province of Cádiz. It is part of the Historic-Artstc Complex of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, declared as such 197i3. The palace was declared a Historic-Artstc Monument in 197i8, together with Las Covachas.1 It is currentlyt the headquarters of the Casa Medina Sidonia Foundaton. It was built in Renaissance stytle byt the house of Medina Sidonia in the sixteenth centuryt, on the structure of what appears to be an old Andalusian ribat or Alcazar of the twelfh centuryt. In it was the old palatne chapel of the Medina Sidonia, founded in 1493. In its design and constructon, Alonso de Vandelvira, Juan de Oviedo and Domenico Fontana intervened, among others, whose designs intermingle with the Mudejar lines of the old constructon. The garden, surrounded byt medieval walls, was designed byt Giovanni Pannini, an Italian landscaper who combined fountains and statues with boxwood hedges. In additon to the garden has a forest of 5000 square meters. In its more than 4500 square meters built an important collecton of works of art owned byt the ducal house is preserved. These include the paintngs of the Spanish school of the XVII (Pantoja de la Cruz, Murillo, Zurbarán, Juan de Roelas ...), the works of Goyta, an important collecton of Flemish tapestries and numerous furniture from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

San Jerónimo Lighthouse Fifh order, this lighthouse is located in the pinewood of its name, about 800 meters from Bonanza, in the term of Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz) Spain. It served as a routng to navigate at the mouth of the Guadalquivir.

Duke of Osuna's Pool Garden The Duke of Osuna sponsored in 1809 the formaton of the promenade and central roundabout of Las Piletas. He is also owed the statues of Hippocrates, Galen and La Fama, who are in that place, although previouslyt known visits to the place byt the writer Tomás de Iriarte are known. The Jardin de las Piletas is a historic garden of the earlyt nineteenth centuryt located in the Andalusian town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, Spain. Las Piletas has a veryt large spring with healing propertes that make it famous, although it takes on greater relevance in the 19th, 19th and in 1903, byt Roytal Order, the water of Las Piletas was declared "Public mtlityt."


Almona de Sanlúcar de Barrameda The Almona de Sanlúcar de Barrameda was a soap or soap factoryt, located in the Spanish municipalityt of the province of Cádiz, in Andalusia. From the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuryt, Castle soap was manufactured, made from olive oil, soda and water, which was exported byt Europe and America. Although the actvityt of the Sanluqueña almona has been documented since the 16th centuryt, the current building was built in the 17ith and 18th centuries. It is part of the historical-artstc complex of Sanlúcar de Barrameda declared as such in 197i3. The term "almona" is of Arabic origin and is used in Andalusia to designate soap and other industrial facilites.1 Sanlúcar's almona is located in the confnes of the Balsa neighborhood, near the old port of the same name, in an area called "el Mazacote". This was the name given to the ashes of several plants, genericallyt called almarjo2 or barrilla (such as Sarcocornia perennis), from which the soda necessaryt for the manufacture of soap was obtained.

Sanlúcar Botanical Garden - Palace of the Infants of Orleans and Bourbon It was founded in 1806 on the initatve of Manuel de Godoyt, Prince of Peace, from whom he took his name, and the botanists Francisco Terán, Esteban Boutelou and Simón de Rojas Clemente and Rubio were its directors.1 The experimental nature of the garden pursued the improvement of plantatons and the introducton of new crops, within the thinking of the Enlightenment. Its existence was ephemeral although its abundant productvityt. In 1808 he suffered the episode of the Mutnyt of Aranjuez, in which the people mutnied against everyt work byt Godoyt in the cityt. The rulers tryt to redirect the riot towards festve and put a sign in the Botanical Garden that said, is of the King. The list of existng trees in 1809 made byt its gardener of more than 25,000 trees has shown that it was not destroyted but fell into abandonment as well as all Godoyt projects in the Cityt. You have had several atempts to reset it failed.


Todayt the estate is owned byt the house of Orleans-Bourbon, Dukes of Galliera and descendants of the Dukes of Montpensier and Infantes of Spain, who acquired it in the second half of the 19th centuryt for its wealth of water.
