The desert in Tunisia - The vast dunes mark the horizon of the largest desert on the planet, the Sahara, which stretches across the width of North Africa. The part between Tunisia and Algeria is known as the Great Eastern Erg. The rich historical heritage of Tunisia is very varied: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs have left their legacy scattered throughout the territory: the Medina of Susa, the Amphitheater of El Jem, the great mosque of Keruan, but, just 20 km from the capital of Tunisia, there is a powerful find, the archaeological park of Carthage. An ancient city founded by the Phoenicians in the ninth century B.C. It came to have about half a million inhabitants and, today, its Roman remains can be visited, starting with the tofet, a sanctuary dedicated to the gods Tanit and Bâal Hammon, place of worship and sacrifices.
