Article and picture by Barb Fisher Wawa's Economic Development Corporation (EDC) works tirelessly with Town Council and the Municipality's staff, local businesses, corporations, organizations and hard working community members to bring positive change, innovation and progress in helping make Wawa the best little community in Northern Ontario. At its Annual General Meeting, EDC members and their community connections outlined a very progressive and positive outlook for the future due to much hard work by many in the past few years. EDC Chair Andy Stevens welcomed everyone and was pleased to bring together guest speakers to explain the many successful projects past and present that have propelled us forward. He noted that although administrative personnel took a few
detours with Jessie Labonte taking maternity leave and Maury O'Neill accepting a position with the Municipality, Silvia Lesage stepped in very easily to help in the seamless transition in her role as Business Administrator. Mayor Rody next addressed the gathering thanking the EDC personnel and congratuated them on another successful year, and is looking forward to the continued collaboration in understanding the changing economy and how Council can help in their successful progress. There are many exciting projects on the horizon and by working together Wawa's economy is destined for great things to come. With just a hint of triumph he welcomed the addition to the municipal team of Maury O'Neill who changes her title from EDC - CEO to our Municipalitie's CAO. No matter what hat Maury wears the Municipality of Wawa is
fortunate to have her expertise and determination. Guest speaker Matthew Jackson, Manager Community & Indigenous Engagement representing NextBridge next spoke on the developments on the East-West Tie Transmission Project which is poised for start-up in June of this year. The project involves the construction of a 450 km doublecircuit 230 kV transmission line connecting Wawa Transfer Station to Thunder Bay, and is identified as a priority project to provide a consistent supply of electricity that supports economic growth, job creation, and resource development in North Western Ontario. NextBridge has finished the preliminary work necessary to complete the project with full support of local communities and First Nation and Metis partners. The lands involved cover the traditional territory of the Michipicoten First

Nation people and Matt gave thanks to them for enabling this partnership. The project planning began in 2013 and with the Ontario Government's final approval of the "Leave to Construct" and "Environmental Assessment" construction is set to begin this June. The construction process includes 11 work fronts along the rightof-way involving equipment mobilization, construction of access roads and culverts, foundation and anchors, tower assembly and reclamation of the land to its natural state. General Contractor Valard is well respected in their field and are partnering with Supercom Industries, a 100% First Nation owned business comprised of the six First Nations along
the northern shore of Lake Superior, and whose collective territories comprise the EastWest Tie route. Supercom's purpose is to balance regional prosperity, a responsible approach to the project with the environment, and successful project delivery with the understanding that success in any one of these areas relies on the other. Matt concluded his presentation by emphasizing that this project will bring much economic growth to our community by employing local labour, contracting services, and the increased inflow to retail outlets, service businesses and motels.
