QUEEN’S PARK –NDP MPP Michael Mantha demanded that the Wynne government stop risking the lives of Ontarians by refusing to allow White River’s fire department to transfer its radio, an essential service for the region, to a planned new tower after MNRF takes down its tower in two weeks. “The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has refused to let the White River fire department radio be transferred to the new tower,” said Mantha, MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin. “We are two weeks away from the dismantling of the tower. Is this government ready to help the Township of White River to protect an essential service for the region?”
Mantha told the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) that the fire department radio helps provide a safety system to call out for fires, as well as for automobile extrication service to the Ministry of Transportation through the White River section of the TransCanada highway in Northern Ontario. “By not transferring the fire department radio to the new tower, this government is putting at risk the life of Ontarians passing through this section of the TransCanada Highway,” Mantha said. “How is this government going to protect Ontarians if they don’t transfer the fire department radio?”
QUEEN’S PARK— Algoma-Manitoulin NDP MPP Michael Mantha said that winter highway road closures are continuing to disrupt the lives of northern Ontario families, adding that on two occasions in the last month, major northern highways had to be closed because of broken or faulty equipment. Mantha said that the experience with private contractors has proven the more expensive privatized system is letting Ontarians down, and risking their safety. It's time to reverse the privatization, he argued. “On February 25, Highway 17 – the TransCanada Highway – was closed from Wawa to White River. Highway 101 between Wawa and Chapleau was also closed due to the absence of snow plows available, as too many had broken down,” said Mantha. “This situation is becoming more and more frequent and people can’t access the roads allowing them to get to the doctor, to work, see friends and family or go to school. I received a call from Sue Cauchy -- a Chapleau resident -- describing her ordeal regarding the road conditions who told me she was thankful to be alive. Ross Joyce from Manitoulin Island contacted me last night describing an incident that his wife had experienced on roads on Manitoulin Island. Enough is enough.” In question period at Queen's Park on Wednesday, Mantha said that private contractors aren’t addressing broken plows and faulty equipment, resulting in highway closures throughout northern Ontario. The private contractor, Broadspectrum,
which used to be known as Transfield before changing its name after a shocking human rights scandal, has racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in penalties for poor performance in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma region. “Broken down snow plows and lack of back-up equipment in good operating condition are getting so frequent that it also happened just last week in the Hornepayne on Highway 631,” said Mantha. “The plow had been tagged as unsafe by one of the employees; however the plow was put back on the road where a mechanical failure happened with the wing of the plow hitting the cab of the truck. People in the Northern Ontario depend on access to main roads, and snow removal employees deserve safe working conditions.” “When is this government going to fix the Winter Road Maintenance Program in Northern Ontario? If the private sector is not able to deliver, why doesn’t the government return the Winter Roads Maintenance Program into public again?” asked Mantha.

Over 40 households participated in the Wawa Thermostat Challenge and on March 24, 2018 Debbie Banks was selected from a random draw as the winner of a gift certificate for a smart thermostat equaling $200.00. For each degree a thermostat is adjusted up or down for the season a family, school, or business can save 1% of the cost. More important, this action stops wasting energy and reduces greenhouse gas pollution. You can make a difference by challenging yourself to make better choices on your own at home. For example, you can take the “Power Down Challenge.” When you have electronics that are not in use, unplug them or if they are plugged into a power bar – shut the power bar off. By doing this, you are not wasting energy on what is called phantom power. By challenging yourself to make these small changes in everyday life, you are making a difference in your energy consumption. The Wawa Economic Development Corporation would like to thank all participants who took the pledge for the Wawa Thermostat Challenge. For more information on programs available that can help you to save energy and money, call Jessie Labonte, Green Project Coordinator, EDC of Wawa – 705-856-4419.
