Seniors Info & Active Living Fair

Article and photo by Barb Fisher   Yes it's true, our community is aging and what a wonderful time of life. It's great being a senior in Wawa. The Seniors Fair held last Wednesday in the Community Centre was a buzz with more than 26 exhibitors offering information and innovation making life enjoyable in our senior years....not to mention the great eats and hilarious "entertainment".   Representatives offered great information and friendly assistance in many areas.   - Ontario Ministry of Seniors Affairs - a handout booklet was available describing all the seniors government programs available: active living, caregiving, finances, health and wellness, housing, long-term care homes, safety and security, and transportation.   - Regional Employment Help Centre - helping people to continue their work earning years with a job that suits their present living status.   - Canada Revenue Agency - helping seniors to navigate the income tax and benefit return which even though you have no income, may qualify you for benefits, credits and tax deductions that you may be entitled

to.   - ARCH Hospice - palliative care supporting people living with life-threatening illnesses. It provides care for the patients' every need, and those of their loved ones, whether medical, psychological, social, spiritual, or practical.   - Alzheimer Society Alzheimer disease is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain. An early diagnosis is essential in order to receive the proper treatment, information and support.   - Lady Dunn Health Centre - displayed a wide range of health benefits for seniors and helping in making health care decisions in all aspects of the aging process.   - Wawa Family Health Team offer a wide range of healthy activity programs: "Stand Up" fall prevention exercises, chairbased fitness programs, walking program, and total fitness programs. Chris Rask invited us all to take a movement break either sitting or standing and demonstrated how easy it is to keep the blood fowing and the muscles toned.   - Community Paramedicine - focuses on illness and injury prevention working towards healthier residents who are

able to remain living in their homes for longer periods with decreased hospital admissions and crises events requiring 911 calls for emergency help.   - Elder Abuse - "It's Not Right" is a program whereby one can identify abuse and help older adults at risk. You may be the neighbour, friend or family member who can make a positive difference in the life of an older adult experiencing abuse. It is everyone's responsibility to recognize the warning signs and learn how to be supportive and safe. Look for other national events happening as every year at this time the "World Elder Abuse Awareness Day" brings universal recognition to this accelerating problem.   - North Algoma Diabetes Education Program - sponsored by the Lady Dunn Health Centre. If you are 40 years of age or over, you are at risk for type 2 diabetes and should be tested at least every three years. If not treated or properly managed, diabetes can result in a variety of complications, including: heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, eye disease, erectile dysfunction and nerve damage. Good diabetes management can help to prevent or delay these complications - talk to your health care provider.   - Canadian Red Cross - offers many community assistance programs: Priority Assistance to Transition Home (PATH) helping patients make the transition from hospital to home safely, smoothly and comfortably, Disaster Services, Meals on Wheels, Transportation, Home Maintenance, and Friendly Visiting programs. By phoning 2-1-1 information on many pro-

grams can be accessed: social clubs, recreation, seniors' centres, computer classes, home care services, utility assistance, chronic disease programs, elder abuse advocacy, grocery help, retirement homes, volunteer centres and much more.   - Wawa Goose Seniors' Club - designed for persons 55 or older and interested in socializing occasionally or regularly. They offer organized activities such as bridge, bingo, euchre, cribbage, mah jongg, pot luck dinners for special occasions and special fundraising events.   - NE LHIN Home and Community Care Services. Services include home nursing services, personal care support including bathing and dressing, physiotherapy assisting with physical problems arising from pain, illness, accident or injury, occupational therapy assisting with problems due to physical or cognitive challenges, speech language therapy, helping with nutritional difficulties, and maximizing social and emotional functioning.   - Reiki and Meditation with Tina - Reiki is a Japanese technique for relaxation and stress reduction that also promotes healing. ety, fear, and negative feelings.   - CHS/SCO Canadian Hearing Society - promotes and supports community services to be accessible to culturally deaf, oral deaf, deafened and hard of hearing consumers.   - North East Community Care Access Centre - provides a variety of professional and support services to assist and support patients at home or in a clinic setting.   - Flu and Shingles Vaccine Info - Certain vaccines are very important for people in their senior years and at 50 years or over, you are at increased risk. Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about the flu and shingles vaccine.   - Wawa's EDC Green Project - In keeping the momentum of protecting our environment, information on energy savings programs with rebates, and low-income energy assistance programs were offered.   - Victim Services - specially trained crisis responders will provide short term confidential, emotional and practical assistance to victims of crime and tragic circumstance.
