École Saint-Joseph Les filles de l’école Saint-Joseph sont initiées aux différents métiers de la construction Les 22 et 23 mars, des filles de la 9e année de l’école secondaire Saint-Joseph (Wawa) ont participé avec leur enseignante, Mme Lynne Burnham aux Ateliers Home Depot à Sault-Ste-Marie. Cette activité avaient pour but d’introduire les femmes aux métiers.

Lors de leur participation à cette activité, les filles ont été initiées à certains métiers du domaine de la construction. Afin de se familiariser avec le magasin et les nombreux produits, les élèves ont participé avec une chasse aux trésors et devaient trouver une variété d’articles.

Trois ateliers étaient au programme: apprendre à faire une cloison sèche (dry wall), bâtir une boîte à fleurs et la plomberie. Dans l’atelier de plomberie les élèves se sont amusés à bâtir un porte I-pod (holder).. Les filles sélectionneront leurs outils ainsi que les produits appropriés aux tâches et appliqueront des connaissances élémentaires en matière de la santé et la sécurité.

L’objet de cette activité d’apprentissage est de démystifier les métiers spécialisés pour les filles et de permettre aux étudiantes de prendre connaissance des carrières valorisantes qui sont possibles dans ce secteur de l’économie. Les statistiques démontrent que les femmes sont sous-représentées dans les secteurs de la construction, de l’industrie, des services et de la force motrice. Par le biais d’activités de ce genre, le CSCNO souhaite rehausser

la confiance des filles tout en les initiant aux carrières non traditionnelles.

Le CSCNO remercie Home Depot de son appui en offrant cette première initiative d’ateliers pour les filles du secondaire.

A Learning Activity At Home Depot To Initiate École Saint-Joseph Female Students To Careers In The Trades On March 22nd and 23rd, grade 9 female students from Wawa’s École secondaire Saint-Joseph travelled to Sault Ste. Marie with their teacher Mrs. Lynne Burnham to take part in Home Depot Workshops. The activity was offered to initiate the students to various building trades During their workshop experience, the girls will be initiated to various building trades. They will learn to apply drywall, build a flower box and were initiated to plumbing. They also has the opportunity to build an I-pod holder. The trainees, who took part in a storewide treasure hunt to become familiar with the layout of the store, chose the tools and the products needed for the job, and applied basic knowledge of health and safety measures.

The purpose of the learning activity was to demystify specialized trades for girls and enable female students to learn about rewarding careers in this sector of the economy.

Statistics reveal that women are under-represented in the

construction, industrial, service, as well as the motive power sector. By participating in this type of activity, the CSCNO is seeking to raise the level of girls’ confidence while initiating them to nontraditional careers.

“The CSCNO thanks Home Depot for its support in providing this initial workshop initiative for Wawa female high school students.

The greatly students enjoyed this learning experience,” stated Mrs. Lynne Burnham, teacher at École secondaire Saint-Joseph.

You may recall that my last column focussed a great deal on the current and future circumstances facing the younger segment of our province. In the Legislature, New Democrats called on the Wynne Liberals to keep a 14 year old election promise they made to protect vulnerable tenants from outrageous rent increases. Landlords with buildings constructed since 1991 are free to increase rent without limit. We even provided some examples where tenants have been told their rent is going to double what they paid the previous year.

When I look at my own sons, nieces and nephews I can’t help but think of their futures.

It almost seems impossible for them to imagine a day when they can afford to buy a house, pay off their student loans or realistically plan to one day afford to live in this province without working two or even three jobs.

I heard from some readers who said that this only affects the young folk down in Toronto. So let’s bring this closer to home with a more local example. On Monday we shared with Premier Wynne that a senior couple in Sault Ste. Marie just informed us they too are facing a 31% increase in their rent. They live on a pension and are pretty sure their pensions are not going to go up by 31%.

Neither Kathleen Wynne nor the Conservatives would support an NDP motion this week that would have closed up this loophole and end this nightmare for tenants in Ontario.

Still thinking of our youth, I also recently shared with you about the rampant trend of school closures under this Liberal government. New Democrats recently discovered by accessing documents through Freedom of Information that the Liberals have knowingly been closing schools across the province that are actually operat-

ing at full capacity. Here in the north our schools play an especially important role, they support neighborhoods and they bring the community together. Since 2011, the Liberal government has closed 277 schools province wide, with more currently on the chopping block. This week NDP MPP Peggy Sattler announced that figures released on Wednesday show that Kathleen Wynne now plans new cuts to classrooms.

These cuts will mean fewer supports for students, more layoffs, and even more school closures across the province.

Even worse, some of our most vulnerable students, those with special needs, will suffer disproportionately because of deep cuts to the education services that thousands of families depend on.

Fifteen school boards across the province will see special education cuts totaling more than $4.6 million.

Just to compound problems for those of us who live in the north, further cuts to geographic circumstances grants are planned. The result of cuts to these grants, which are used to help keep smaller rural and northern schools open, will be that more schools in our northern and rural communities will be closed - and the Liberals do this at a time when Ontario families need investments in education and kids. Once again the Wynne Liberals are cutting critical programs and putting the future of our students at risk.

Our families absolutely deserve better. Remember, it doesn’t have to be this way.

Omnibus Budget Bill Misses The Mark A measure that was briefly mentioned in last month’s budget bill is going to take a big bite out of Canadian’s wallets when the government hikes fees for federal services like camp grounds, passports and fishing licenses. Those are just a part of the government’s new omnibus budget bill that will change almost 30 pieces of legislation at a rapid pace. The bill will also gut the power of the Parliamentary Budget Officer, create a bank to fund private, for-profit infrastructure, and make life easier for foreign investors who want to buy up more of Canada.

Part of what makes the bill surprising is the way the Liberals took issue with Stephen Harper’s use of omnibus budgets while they were in opposition. They argued the Conservatives were using bloated budgets to their advantage by stuffing them with measures important enough to be brought before parliament one at a time. While moving to adopt omnibus budget bills may sound out of character, the government is doing it at the same time that they are proposing rule changes for the House of Commons - incredibly, one of these would end the use of omnibus budgets.

If it sounds a bit crazy, it may well be, but the government doesn’t require new rules if they really want to follow their own advice.

In the meantime parliament will be dealing with a bill in excess of 300 pages that includes user fee increases, significant public investments, rule changes and omissions, all of which will be whisked through parliament in a matter of weeks but will resonate for years.

Canadians will be on the hook for the money the government is planning to stock it’s new infrastructure bank with. Up to 35 billion tax payer’s dollars will be made available for this venture that will fund infrastructure projects which will then turn a private profit in the form of tolls and user fees. The inclusion of profitability as a criteria for infrastructure spend-

ing limits the kind of projects that will be considered. That could amount to a tough sell for rural and northern projects that don’t promise big returns.

The costs might spiral for Canadians, but it could be more difficult to get information that shows this because of changes coming for the Parliamentary Budget Officer.

While provisions in the bill will make the PBO an official officer of parliament, which carries broad support, they will also hamper the office’s ability to conduct its business independently. New rules will force the PBO to submit their annual work plan for review by the Speakers of the House of Commons and Senate. In addition to that, the Speakers will also receive advance copies of any PBO reports.

Currently, the PBO delivers its reports without this kind of oversight. The government may not always like the outcome, but the transparency allows parliamentarians to perform their jobs better.

The theme of reduced oversight carries into changes that are coming for foreign investors who will find it easier to take over Canadian companies. This is because the government is raising the threshold amount that will spark a review to a billion dollars.

That’s almost double the current level and it allows bigger takeovers to escape the kind of oversight that can protect jobs in Canada and limits the ability of the government to step forward in the name of the public interest.

While the government is claiming all these changes are just natural extensions of last month’s budget one item from that speech that failed to make it into the omnibus bill is anything related to a crack-down on off shore tax cheats. It’s estimated that reeling those big fish in could net the government $8 billion dollar a year. At the same time, we are hearing that the cost of serving the Canadian public has increased and the shortfall is being pulled from our pockets as we pay for things like tent sites, fishing licenses, and passport fees.

Michipicoten Chronicles

Logging The East Shore Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the incredible spectacle of fresh melt-water rushing down Northern Algoma’s mighty rivers like the Goulais, Batchawana, Chippewa, Montreal, Agawa, Sand, Magpie and Michipicoten! If you were standing at the mouths of some of those rivers 100 years ago, the rush of water would have been overshadowed by the bonecrushing cords of pine and spruce forced down the flooded waterways to Superior destined for the pulp and lumber mills of Sault Ste. Marie.

Wood was first harvested in the northern reaches of the Algoma District on the Michipicoten and Magpie Rivers in 1900-1901. Pulpwood and railway tie logs were cut along the brand new ACR right of way between Michipicoten Harbour and the newly opened Helen Mine. Farmers and labourers from eastern Canada looking for winter work would travel to Northern Algoma to take up axe and saw in the remote logging camps scattered throughout the region. The main method of logging was to fell the trees by hand, haul the logs by horse on icy winter roads, and pile the harvested wood onto frozen lakes.

A series of dams were constructed on the outgoing streams of these lakes to ensure high water levels. Almonte and Mijinemungshing Lake in Lake Superior Provincial Park had as many as 15 dams constructed between their headwaters and the Michipicoten River. During the spring thaw, the wood would drift to the dams which would be opened in a particular sequence to ensure the swiftest flush of wooden debris down the rocky, river bed to its next

destination. Imagine the sound in 1918 when a dam on the Agawa River accidently burst, flushing 13,000 cords of wood through the river valley in 6 hours. Local families remember pulpwood scattered across Agawa Bay supplying them with the perfect building material for new upgrades and renovations to their homes.

Despite their best efforts, the rivers sometimes jammed and waterfalls became a mammoth tangle of pulpwood debris which took ingenuity, elbow grease and good old fashioned dynamite to clear the way.

Natural obstacles were sometimes removed ahead of time to ensure a smooth log run. In 1927, the Sand River was targeted for a substantial overhaul in order to eliminate the annoying chutes and gorges for the final 3 kilometres of the river. The cost was deemed too extreme and the plans were abandoned.

During normal log drives, the sure footed workers called Rodeo Hogs had the job of hopping and dancing across the floating logs near the river mouths, and roping them into huge wooden rafts surrounded by large boom logs. These rafts were then ready to be towed down the eastern Superior shoreline to the pulp mills in Sault Ste. Marie. Hardy tugs first run by steam, then diesel, had the task of pulling hundreds of cords of wood along one of the roughest stretches of coastline to the hungry mills.

The trip was never easy, and the weather was always unpredictable. The average speed of this massive floating wood floor was approximately a mile an hour. If Mother Nature did not cooperate, the tug and its crew sometimes found themselves going backwards. And if she was in a particularly nasty mood, the crew could only watch as waves and winds snapped the lines and the entire load would find itself strewn across the waiting beaches and coves. The renegade pulpwood then became the prize possession of beachcombers and pulp-pickers hoping to salvage the sixteen, eight and four foot spruce logs for a finder’s fee or to become the new sleep cabin for guests to enjoy.

During World War II, German prisoners of war were utilized along with Abitibi employees to help cut pulp wood on the Magpie, Pukaskwa, White and Michipicoten Rivers.

With the decreasing wood supplies along the rivers, and the completion of the TransCanada highway, the log drives were replaced by gravel roads and skidder runways. The raging spring rivers were once again allowed to spill into Superior minus the shouts of the Rodeo Hogs, and the cords of pulpwood logs which can still be found along the riverbanks and beaches today.

Algoma Power Inc. To Meet Dubreuilville’s Electricity Needs Algoma Power Inc. (“Algoma Power”) is pleased to announce that the Ontario Energy Board has named it as the interim operator of the electricity distribution system for the Township of Dubreuilville for the next six months per OEB order EB2017-0153. Algoma Power has delivered safe and reliable electricity to the District of Algoma for over 100 years and is part of the FortisOntario family of companies, which includes utilities throughout the province of Ontario.

Dubreuil Lumber Inc. informed the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) that it will not be renewing its licence to distribute power locally. To ensure the residents and businesses of Dubreuilville have a safe and reliable electricity supply, the OEB has ordered Algoma Power to take over the electricity distribution operations of Dubreuil Lumber.

Algoma Power has been in regular communications with Dubreuil Lumber Inc. and have been working cooperatively to ensure continued service to the customers of Dubreuilville.

Algoma Power wants to assure the residents of Dubreuilville that while the company has been assigned as an interim operator,

they will work to fulfill all of the responsibilities as the electricity distributor. Historically, Algoma Power has been supplying power to Dubreuil Lumber Inc. and has served customers in the area near the Township of Dubreuilville for many years. It has also provided assistance to Dubreuil Lumber Inc. in emergencies. Algoma Power’s familiarity with the community will help ensure both a smooth transition and the continued operation of the distribution system.

During the next six months, Algoma Power will be reporting to the OEB on the state of the electricity distribution system in the Township of Dubreuilville. At the end of the six months, the OEB can renew its Order if necessary to ensure the continued supply of safe and reliable electricity to the area.

Ontario Launches Green Leaf Challenge to Help Fight Climate Change Ontario is partnering with families, community organizations and businesses across the province to reach its goal of planting six million trees this year to promote cleaner air and help fight climate change.

Ontario's Green Leaf Challenge, launched today, calls on the public to get involved in making the province a greener, cleaner place to live. The initiative is supported by Forests Ontario and the province, and honours Ontario's 150th anniversary. Each year, Ontario plants

approximately three million trees under its 50 Million Tree Program (50MTP), and the government is now challenging the public to match its target in 2017.

Individuals, organizations and businesses can participate by planting a tree, participating in a community tree planting event or making a donation to have a tree planted on their behalf, and can track their progress at green leafchallenge.ca. The website allows people to register their trees on an interactive map and access resources, support

and events in their communities.

The Green Leaf Challenge and 50MTP are part of Ontario's efforts to improve air quality across the province by planting new trees to remove approximately 6.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2050 - the equivalent of taking 1.1 million cars off the road for an entire year.

Improving air quality, restoring Ontario's forests and fighting climate change are part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help

people in their everyday lives.

Wawa Men's 70th Annual Curling Bonspiel The Wawa Men's Annual Bonspiel was held April 7th9th with 24 teams participating. Thanks to Club President Jim Hoffmann and SecretaryTreasurer Yvan Besner who organized the event. Thanks to all the participants, Michelle and Pat for a great meal, the ladies who BBQ'd the steaks, the volunteers at

the entry desk and at the door prize table, the refreshment servers, the ice sweepers, and the staff at the Community Centre.

A New World Order?

My name is Jarvis Whitehall. I work for CSIS in Ottawa at our headquarters where I monitor communications in all it's forms, similar to what has been exposed so publicly in the States with their President.

Unfortunately the British spy agency has been dragged into this mess too now, which I am sure has infuriated them to no end. I know that I would not want our Canadian activities brought under such scrutiny. Fortunately so far so good. On the down side both the Americans and British agents have asked us to pick up more of the load on all this monitoring until this issue dies down, and they can resume normal monitoring.

Reluctantly my counterparts in Washington have been ordered to give me , as Senior Monitoring Technician, the security codes for their most secret devices.

I have come across some alarming information too in the last few weeks, which if revealed will change the world order.

I should give you some of my background, and how I came to this position. It all began when I was a young boy, growing up in Ottawa as the son of a diplomat.

My first recollections were when my father was working in Foreign Affairs as Senior Assistant for contacts with the United States Embassy back in the 1990's. He would often have diplomats and dignitaries over to the house for meetings and parties when our Ambassador was busy or out of the country. There is one evening in particular that has stuck in my mind all these years. In the study there were 3 men huddled together talking in a low whisper. They didn't see me come in as the door was ajar. I just slipped in and stood there listening to what they were saying. It was just like in a John LeCarre spy novel. I heard the one man say emphatically that they would change the world some day. He went on to say it would take time and moles all over the place but it would happen. The other two men nodded in agreement.

Unfortunately the conversation was cut short as the one gentleman happened to look up and saw me standing there.

I blushed and said the first thing that came to my mind, which was that I was looking for my father. I excused myself, and quickly retreated out the door and down the hall towards the living room where the other guests were congregating. I remember seeing the 3 of them come in too, right behind me, and they separated and moved over to other guests. It was not long after that when they

left the party.

I never say them again while Dad was working in Ottawa. But all of a sudden I saw them again in Moscow, where Dad had been promoted to Ambassador to Russia. That was in 2012.

They came into the reception area, one by one over the next half hour. I had been sitting there waiting to see Dad about to get tickets for a hockey game between Russia and Finland that night. We were supposed to go together.

As soon as each one came in, they were ushered into Dad's office immediately. About a half hour later they all came out of the office together and headed out. Dad called out to his secretary that he was gone the rest of the day to attend an urgent meeting. I called out to him and he stopped short, and uttered an apology that the hockey game was a no-go, and he would explain when he got back to the Embassy.

Before I could say anything he was gone. I went home disappointed but also understood that these things happen when you are an Ambassador.

But to my shock and surprise, who should come home with Dad was Donald Trump, now President Trump, and Charles Booke, along with these 3 mystery guys. I learned later that Booke was a close business associate of Mr. Trump.

I was in the living room watching TV as they passed by the open door. Mom had already gone up to bed. Mr. Trump poked his head in the door and said hi, and asked what I was watching.

I told him it was the news on CNN. He guffawed and said forcefully not to watch that network, as they were so biased against Republicans and pro Democrat, and that they only spread false news.

He finished up by saying that I should be watching the FOX network to get the real news. Before I could reply, he announced that he was building a new hotel in Moscow and if I wanted a job there, just call him personally and he would hire me. Then he was gone. The other 3 had already disappeared with Dad into his private office. I was mystified as to why these folks would be involved with the Canadian Ambassador and not the American one. It eventually became apparent, much to me chagrin, dismay and danger.

It wasn't long after that brief encounter that Dad was able to arrange a job for me with CSIS back in Ottawa. He knew my technical skills were ideal for this kind of job that I now have. But what I have discovered over the last two years, listening and hacking in to all kinds of conversa-

tions on phone, Twitter computer e-mails, etc. I know he will be regretting it, once I alert my supervisor. It will be known worldwide what has been going on between this triumvirate of countries!

There was one other person of interest in all of this who has become Secretary of State. His connections with Russia over the years as an executive of Exxon and on a personal level has been instrumental on bringing us to the precipice of a new world order. More about this in a moment.

First, some of the mysterious calls over the past two years have been between my 3 mystery figures. They exposed their names over the first phone calls. I recognized their voices from my previous encounters with them. One of the 3 was Booke. The second one was Igor Stravinsky, an old KGB agent from the old days when it was still the Soviet Union, and who was very close to Mr. Putin, the Russian President. The third man was Jin Pi-Sung, China's Defense Minister.

The connection between them became clear on an encrypted phone call that I was able to crack where they discussed the final plans for the re-alignment of the world order. The United States was going to become a dictatorship once Trump was elected President. That was step one. Russian and China were already set up with their leaders in place. Once Trump was elected, and the Russians assured him that they had taken the steps needed with their voter tampering to ensure his win in 2016.

Mr. Trump had thanked his Russian contact for all their help, and assured them plans were progressing well for the adjustments to take place later in 2017.

Another call from the Secretary of State made me realize he was in on this horrific scheme - the fourth man.

I picked up the call between him, Trump and Putin in March that he would be coming to Moscow in April with the breakdown of how the 3 of them were going to divvy up the world's countries. The Secretary chuckled as he told the others that it was a delightful diversion to intimate that Russia and the States were at their worst conditions ever. China's part was to work on the North Korea leader to appear to be ready to attack the States with nuclear bombs and missiles if provoked. Of course the Chinese President was good friends with Kim-Jung-Il and was telling him what to do, I learned.

I was astounded at the nerve that the Chinese president came for such an open visit to the States. I bet they likely finalized their plans during that time at Trump's resort in Florida.

From my wire tapes I learned in frightening detail that Trump would get North

and South America, the British Isles, and the Middle East, Russia would get Europe and Africa, and China would get Asia and Australia/New Zealand. It reminded me of the board game, RISK, which was advertised as the game of global domination. I remember playing the game as a kid.

Now I am in the midst of playing the game in real life and real time. I am terrified.

I had accumulated enough information that had to be reported.

I called my supervisor, Trevor Winchester on Monday, April 17th. That was in the morning. In the afternoon about two I got a call to meet him at 10:00 p.m. in Bellevue Park on the outskirts of Ottawa along the Ottawa River. It was an isolated area.

This was sounding suspicious to me like a setup for murder or a disappearance at the least. I know – watching too many spy movies and reading too many books on the subject.

About three that afternoon I picked up the most shocking call of my career.

It was a call between Mr. Trump, the President himself, and my Dad in Moscow. He warned my Dad about what I had told my supervisor, Mr. Winchester. He went on to tell my Dad that I must be eliminated and those calls made to disappear, however he needed to do it. My Dad said nothing for several seconds before saying in a low defeated tone that he would make the arrangements.

Then Mr. Trump assured my Dad that he was still the No. 1 man for the Governorship of Canada, once everything was divvied up according to the plan. Then abruptly he cut off the conversation.

I stared at my equipment in front of me for a long time before snapping out of it, and making my own plans.

I knew that I would not be going out to no park tonight like my boss wanted. He was either a mole, or an operative working for Trump, that was now obvious.

So before I left work, I copied the transcripts of the calls, packaged them up, and put them in the mail box just outside our office entrance, addressed in confidence to Hally Sawchuk, a reporter friend at the Ottawa Citizen newspaper. I trusted that she would alert the world of what was coming.

My plan was to head to my apartment in Orleans, pack up, and get out of town.

However, I was confronted by two burly men in the lobby who forced me up the stairs to get to my apartment. I told them I lived on the 5th floor and I hoped they were in good shape – just idle chatter to throw them off. When we got to the second floor, I quickly opened the fire door, ran down the hall, banging on doors to hopefully get some commotion going, so I could make my escape easier. However, no one poked

their head out to see what was going on. Thankfully, I was able to outrun them, and got back to the lobby and outside.

I ran to the nearest bus stop, and a lucky break for me, as right then a bus pulled in. I hopped on, paid the fare, and huddled at the back of the bus, watching for those two guys. It seemed to take forever for the bus to pull out, but it finally did. I never saw those guys again as the bus pulled away from my apartment complex. I had one transfer to make, which got me to the bus terminal. I bought a ticket for Thunder Bay. That was the only bus leaving Ottawa at the moment.

It is now Wednesday afternoon this April 19th as I sit on the bus at the community centre here in Wawa. It looks like a nice little inviting town.

I am tempted to stay, but I am still in that 'flight' mode, not the 'fight' one. I just want to get away from the whole fear for my life. I don't know where I am planning to finish up, what my plan of action is, and I am paranoid still about those two guys catching up with me – or are there others out there now looking for me that I would not recognize in time. How can I stop this plot.

My only hope was Hally, but I heard on the news earlier today while in the bus stop in Sault Ste. Marie, that she had died in what appeared to be a drug overdose. I pray that she passed my tapes onto someone else who could expose this terrifying madness.

But as I sit here in Wawa, there are only two thoughts I am considering to act upon.

One is to get to Vancouver and contact my friend in the CSIS office there, to see if the they picked up any of these messages, although I am pretty sure I was the only one who had access to the highly confidential access code. The second thought is to get to Moscow and kill my father for his betrayal of me and our country. But on thinking that one over too, here in this bus, I became depressed as I realized that was not a plan to ever get fulfilled. No, I am going to be a fugitive for the rest of my life, and I will just have to be content watching the events unfold, and rationalize that I did my best to stop it.

Which got me thinking – maybe a small town like Wawa would be the perfect hiding place to settle down with a new identity? Well, at least for a while. So, CITIZENS OF WAWA – SHOULD I GO, OR SHOULD I STAY?
