Wawa Economic Development’s AGM 2016 Article & photo by Joan Brooks   There was an excellent turnout for the Wawa Economic Development Corporation’s April 6th Annual General Meeting. The meeting was held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall.   This annual event was opened by EDC Chair Andy Stevens who called the meeting to order, called for approval of the agenda and reviewed and received approval for the minutes of the 2015 AGM. He then welcomed all those attending and thanked those members and employees for their hard work over the past year.   Mayor Ron Rody then offered opening remarks and took advantage of the opportunity to speak of his work and the efforts of the community to make a senior’s home possible. “We will continue to move our community forward and make Wawa the friendly community we all call home.”   Stevens then introduced the guest speaker of the evening – Stephen Roberts, Managing Director of Canadian Operations Rentech. He lives and works in Thunder Bay and became responsible for Rentech Wawa in January 2012. However, he was no stranger to Wawa having worked and lived in Wawa for three years when he was previously with Weyerhaeuser. “I have great memories of Wawa,” he said as he began his excellent presentation of the work being done throughout the USA and Canada. (More on this at a later date).   Roberts presentation was followed by Chair Stevens AGM report. “On behalf of Mayor Ron Rody, I would like to thank for your strong belief in the

future of Wawa and for being a strong advocate for seniors and supporter of the EDC. Also gratitude to the members of Council for their support. The municipality faces many challenges including declining enrollment in the community and increased costs. Thanks for your guidance.”   Then EDC CEO Maury O’Neill, Emily Cormier – Wawa’s Energy Plan Coordinator and Jessie Labonte EDC Administrative Assistant gave their annual report using Power Point.   O’Neill began by thanking her Board and their more than 500 volunteer hours served over the past year. She touched on the EDC Success Drivers and their 2015 EDC Work Plan. They accessed $175,000 funds for small business development and shared at length their work over the past year with LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). The EDC supported the Wawa BIA through replacement of the Wawa Goose Lights, supported events such as the Wawa Music Festival, Sno-Down and Winter Carnival, flowers and new benches and a Business Lunch and Learn. They also provide event support for 20 events – 500 plus attendees including the popular monthly 10 Things to do in Wawa.   The Wawa Energy Plan is one of three special projects undertaken by the EDC in 2015. Emily Cormier stepped in and spoke to the project funding and partnerships over the past year and issued a call to action. The Wawa Energy Plan aligns with Economic Development, Municipal and Provincial Plans plus $75,000 which remains in the community. This results in capacity building and report-

ing compliance. Over the past 15 months or 425 days there were 126 events and 3 surveys and 3 reports prepared. This is important to note: The Wawa Energy Plan was developed by a local organization for local people. They also recently received notice that their Trillium fund application was approved for $220,000 over 25 months to coordinate local energy education and conservation initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.   The Age Friendly Wawa Project was presented by Jessie Labonte. The Municipality hired the EDC to prepare a report. They received 196 responses to their Senior’s survey, 75 people attended the Senior’s Luncheon and are now doing a 2016 Senior’s Housing Study.   The 2015 Youth Training Program accessed a total of $160,000, trained 30 youth ready for the labor force.   Their 2016 Work Plan focus is on alignment with existing Plans including the EDC 2016 Plan, Wawa Strategic Plan, the Wawa Energy Plan, the BIA Work Plan and the Age Friendly Wawa Plan.   O’Neill closed her presentation by thanking her EDC Board of Directors, Municipal Council and staff, the Energy Committee, EDC Membership and the best staff ever, Emily Cormier and Jessie Labonte.   Next, Bill Chapman called for nominations for the 2016 Board of Directors. No further nominations came forward. The 2016 Board of Directors were confirmed by motion and ballots were destroyed. The 2015 AGM ended with a motion to adjourn.

Article & photo by Barb Fisher   I always enjoy an invitation to celebrate our town's fantastic volunteers and last Tuesday, the spotlight was front and centre on the Lady Dunn Hospital Centre Auxiliary. Kadean O'Gilvie-Pinter, Director of Patient Care and Interim Co-Ceo welcomed and thanked everyone in their nevertiring quest to helping the LDHC in providing services that keep us healthy and happy in our town. Mayor Rody was on hand to add to the accolades in presenting a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of Wawa's Town Council. And then we helped ourselves to the goodies - a wonderfully decorated cake, adorned in gold leaf trim with a prominent gold "50" candle tribute. It was a shame to cut into it... but oh well.   The Auxiliary was established in 1966 when 67 members started it all, hence the 50th anniversay celebration this day. Today there are 26 members, keeping in mind that what our population has lost in numbers, our community has gained in enthusiasm. All ages were represented in the gathering, some starting out from grade and high school earning volunteer hours, with the experience fanning a feeling of pride in being able to make a difference in someone else's life. Cindy Maki, Auxiliary President accompanied me through the memorabilia, photo albums, and slide presentation set up for the group to reminisce on good times past. Cindy pointed

out the listing since 1967 of some of the clinical furnishings and equipment presented to the hospital to improve the quality of life to patients and clients, and the list was impressive indeed. Items provided by the Auxiary's fundraising efforts ranged from toasters and high chairs to hospital equipment worth tens of thousands of dollars which wouldn't have been attainable without the untiring hours dedicated by the Auxiliary team.   The Gift Shop operated by the members and located in the hospital lobby exhibits a wonderful display of one-of-a-kind items, some handcrafted by our own talented friends; something for everyone, defying the concept "my loved one has everything!" Fundraisers are ongoing throughout the year: bake tables, raffles, teas, donation promotions, and on special holidays, the Christmas bazaar and cookie sales are a big hit. The most recent cookie sale offered 36 trays full of unique and delicious treats, but only for a limited time - they disappeared in 20 minutes! The residents of the longterm care section in the hospital provide the volunteers a chance to explore their hidden talents in offering special treats - teas, musical get-togethers, craft afternoons, gift giving honouring special days, and long-distance telephone bills that mysteriously "go away."   I slid into a vacant chair beside Luella Campbell for a chat down memory lane as she holds the impressive title of longest-service status beginning her volunteer journey in 1980. Her bubbly personality and her obvious dedication to the Auxiliary was infectious and I came away in awe of what a truly remarkable volunteer family lives right here in Wawa. So everyone involved in this great service, give yourself a huge pat on the back; you are much loved.
