April Is The Month To Fight Back!
The Lady Dunn Health Centre Oncology unit works with the Algoma Community office of the Canadian Cancer Society to educate, inform and provide practical services to our patients and their families. How can we help you? The Lady Dunn Oncology unit can provide you with educational materials regarding prevention and screening for cancer, types of cancer, treatment available, symptom management and living with, during and after a cancer diagnosis. Cancer can be difficult to understand and coping can be stressful. It can help to talk to someone you can trust. Working as a multidisciplinary team, your nurse, family doctor and oncologist are available to you and your family to provide information and support. The Canadian Cancer Society also provides a Cancer Information Service. This service can provide you with current and reliable information in the comfort of your own home. It is a national, tollfree service available to cancer patients, caregivers, families and friends, the general public and healthcare professionals. They will answer your questions and give you information on cancer treatment and side effects, clinical trials, emotional support services, prevention, help in the community and complementary therapies. This service is available Monday to Friday in English and French. For other languages, they will access an interpreter service. Call toll-free at 1-888-939-3333 (TTY 1-886786-3934) or email info@cis. cancer.ca. The Canadian Cancer Society also provides emotional support through a peer support service and through an online community. CancerConnection.ca is a place where people facing cancer and their loved ones can share experiences and build relationships to help them through their cancer journey. To access this service go to http://cancer-
connection.ca/home. Living in a small community we understand that travelling for cancer treatment can be difficult. If you can’t afford the cost of travel, or if you are not physically well enough to use public transportation, the Canadian Cancer Society can work with you to help find a solution. The Wheels of Hope program provides a Volunteer Driver Program that can help you with travel to attend cancerspecific medical appointments or supportive care. If you are in need of transportation or are willing to volunteer your time as a driver contact the Algoma Community Office at (705) 2534781 or 1-888-930-8883. As you may know, April is Daffodil Month; the daffodil is a symbol of strength and courage. It says we will not give up. It says we will fight back! It says we will beat cancer! The Canadian Cancer Society is asking the Algoma Region to show your support during Daffodil Month by purchasing a bunch of fresh daffodils, wearing the iconic yellow daffodil pin or being generous when one of our volunteer canvassers comes to your neighbourhood. Live daffodils are available to purchase at our very own John’s Valu-Mart here in Wawa. For every freshcut and potted daffodils sold, John’s Valu-Mart will be donating $2 to the Canadian Cancer Society. Daffodil pins are also available throughout our community. All money raised during Daffodil Month funds life-saving research along with providing information and support services to people living with cancer and their families. Working together we strive to deliver the best possible care. For more information or to access any of the services mentioned, you may contact Louise Needham R.N. at 705-856-2335 ext 3413 or the Canadian Cancer Society - Algoma Community Office at 705-253-4781 or toll free at 1-888-930-8883.

Drive 4UR School Event! Have you driven a Ford lately? Michipicoten High School and Northern Lights Ford are working together to host a Ford Drive 4 UR School event at MHS on Saturday, May 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Northern Lights Ford will have lots of vehicles to test drive such as the Explorer, Escape, Fusion, Taurus, Focus, and of course F-150’s, Canada’s best-selling truck for fifty years in a row. For every test drive during this event, Ford of Canada will donate $20 on your behalf to MHS, up to a maximum of $6,000. Credit is given for one driver per household, and drivers must have a valid Class G driver’s license on
the day of the event. With each test drive you will get a free BBQ lunch and will be entered into a raffle for a beautiful bench handcrafted by our very own Mr. Beland. MHS is planning to use the proceeds to revitalize their courtyard. MHS students have come up with some drawings showing some potential options. Come vote on which option you think is best. So put this event on your calendar - Saturday, May 7th – and come to MHS and enjoy a burger or a hotdog while helping out your local school! You never know…the vehicle of your dreams might just be waiting here for you! Can’t wait to see you!
Ontario intends to introduce legislation that will ensure every eligible employee is part of the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP) or a comparable workplace pension plan by 2020. The Ontario Retirement Pension Plan Act (Strengthening Retirement Security for Ontarians), 2016 would expand coverage to more than 4 million Ontario workers--including 75 per cent of younger workers-who do not have access to an adequate workplace pension plan. The ORPP Act, if passed, would: • Provide workers with a predictable stream of income in retirement, paid for life • Begin enrolment for employers starting on January 1, 2017, with contributions beginning in waves on January 1, 2018, • Ensure employers and employees have the information and the time they need to prepare for implementation • Enshrine in legislation the plan design details, including participation, contributions, benefit types, and plan sustainability • Hold contributions in trust for plan members that will not form part of government revenues Building a secure retirement savings plan is part of the government's economic plan to build Ontario up and deliver on its number-one priority to grow the economy and create jobs. The four-part plan includes investing in talents and skills, including helping more people get and create the jobs of the future by expanding access to high-quality college and university education.
The plan is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history and investing in a low-carbon economy driven by innovative, high-growth, export-oriented business. QUICK FACTS • Coverage is even lower for young workers – only about one quarter of Ontario workers aged 25 to 34 participated in a workplace pension plan in 2012, compared to nearly half of workers aged 45 to 54. • The ORPP would offer a predictable, reliable and inflation-indexed stream of income in retirement, paid for life, by providing a pension of up to 15 per cent of an individual’s earnings, up to $90,000 (in 2017 dollars). • Ontario is also committed in working collaboratively with the federal government to make progress on a national solution that addresses the needs of future retirees. By moving forward with legislation, Ontario is ensuring that, if no national consensus on CPP enhancement is reached, retirement security can be strengthened in Ontario through the ORPP.
