Ladies Annual Curling Bonspiel - Battle Of The Bands

Winners L-R: Linda Zagar, Debbie Tavella, Amanda Huff, Chrissy McClelland Article & photos by Barb Fisher   For 64 years now the Wawa Ladies Curling Bonspiel has been bringing our and neighouring communities together in an amazing demonstration of expertise on the curling rink, combined with the other thing they do best - bringing women together to celebrate their sisterhood. Organizing coordinator Amanda Huff was a little worried at the beginning of the sign up with only a few teams committed and feared that this year's bonspiel would not offer the same scope as other years, but in the eleventh hour several teams signed up in the same moment making the 25 team line-up the largest in the bonspiel's history. Outof-town teams again included Thunder Bay, Marathon, Chapleau, Sudbury and the Soo and although the competition on the ice was gruelling, off-ice everyone was ready to party.   With the extensive line up of registered teams, curling got underway Friday at 4:00, but all seriousness was preempted by the "Battle" - of the Bands that is; the costume parade. As an 80's groupy somewhat familiar with the flamboyance of bands from the past, I thought I recognized most. Guitar totin', big hair, supersized shades and much facial hair set the mood with some clever twists: Juan Direction - the Mexican spin on a band of the past. If what has been said that "imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery", well Ritchie Overton, you should be over-

whelmed. Yes, you and your band were very enthusiastically represented!   Rinks got into full swing early Saturday morning with lots of serious curling and great shots in between the camaraderie that women seem to have perfected. Skit night got underway Saturday evening with lots of raffle draws, door prizes and gift certificates won. Best Dressed team went to the "Real" Spice Girls, who were scarcely dressed, Most Original to the Village People, Funniest to the Bare Naked Ladies and Team Spirit was clinched by the helping hand extended to the newbie Norwegian team by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers who helped the novice group acclimate to the game. Much thanks was given to all prize donors, people working diligently behind the scenes, bar tenders, ice cleaners and the North of 17 Restaurant who provided the delicious meal. Hilarious antics aside, the skits gave an impressive

look at our homegrown vocal talent. Cindi "Lucille" Lauper expressed the collective sentiment "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "Janie" Twain felt like a woman, "Carole" Carnes batted Betty Davis eyes and "Danette" Turner was simply the best - as everyone was invited to form a circle, clasp arms and sway in unison, "We are the Children, We are the World"! Chapleau's own "Tall Boys" provided the live music for the dance that followed with the invitation extended as in other years, to the Oldtimers Hockey Tournament who shared the weekend spotlight.   Sunday afternoon I settled into the spectator section to catch the final games in the First, Second and Third Events and the competition was brutal demonstrating first class curling entertainment. The victors assembled before the wonderful prize tables to make their selection as the winners were called. The grand winner of the First Event also took away the trophy: Linda Zagar, Debbie Tavella, Amanda Huff and Chrissy McClelland. Winners of the Second Event were Melissa Terris, Doris Zagar, Johanna Rowe and Darlene Jordan Pfaff, with the Third Event winners, Diane Spencer, Melissa Terris, Connie Taylor and Jennifer McLaughlin.   Again, great yearly events such as this can only happen with the relentless work of countless volunteers from which our community keeps giving of their time and expertise. You are all appreciated and admired. See you next year.
