Gerry Rose On Saturday, July 23rd, 2016, Wawa and Area Victim Services hosted the 10th Annual William Rose Memorial Golf Tournament. 126 Participants were greeted with sunny skies all day long. Thank you to all who attended to support our cause.

Proceeds for the tournament go towards bursaries for graduating high school students entering Law Enforcement.

Additional proceeds stay local to support the Wawa Victim Services program.

Every golfer received a tee gift provided by Mission Motors consisting of a handy little rain poncho, and in addition to this a tournament logo golf towel courtesy of Bill’s family and friends.

Throughout our 10 years running Mission Motors has always supported us and this year was no exception. Every participant was eligible to take a shot for a hole in one on #7 which would’ve landed someone a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado!

Although there was no winner, we thank Mission Motors for their tremendous support and the exciting opportunity provided.

Bay Mills Resort and Casino generously provided 4 Golf and Gaming packages to be won. A special thank you for their continued and ongoing support.

Sheila Bleisath of the Michipicoten Golf Club hosted a delicious steak dinner for the crowd. Thank you to all of the workers from the club for providing exceptional ser-

Notes From The Bird Lady Article and Photos by Tammie Hache Manitouwadge, ON bthache@yahoo.ca All summer, I've been thinking I have a single adult female Downy Woodpecker visiting my yard .... just the female, no male in sight.

Imagine my surprise in the past 2 weeks when I discover this adult female feeding a juvenile female Downy. On top of that, a juvenile MALE Downy showed up this week!

Guess my single adult female Downy had a boyfriend nearby after all. Lucky for me! It's so much fun to have Woodpecker families in the yard with the adults teaching the young where to find food. They get insects and fruit from my crab apple tree and my honeysuckle shrub.

The mother Downy is also teaching her youngsters how to use the feeders to get seed.

The juvenile male has this down pat now.

I'm still seeing a few male Hummingbirds around but I'm mostly seeing females now; typical for this time of year. The males have already begun their migration. I have so much blooming in my yard now that I'm seeing the Hummers in the flowerbeds more than I'm seeing them at the feeders. I have Monarda, Heliopsis, Rudbeckia, Purple Liatris, Lilies, Maltese Cross, Nasturtium, Marigolds, Gladiolus, Day Lilies and

Dahlias all blooming now.

Also, there are spider webs all over the places and Hummers eat spiders .... YES! ... so the Hummers have loads of natural food in my yard right now.

My husband and I made a recent quick trip down to southern Ontario, just outside of Ottawa and I was lucky enough to see a couple of Cardinals in my brother's yard. That's always a big bonus when we go down there!

A young female Cardinal was hanging around regularly, not nearly as shy as the male who would just zip over the hedge and disappear again. I managed to get a couple of photos of him but of course, they're fuzzy because it was nearly dark out at the time he zipped through. It sure was nice to listen to him sing & call though. I've only ever had a Cardinal in my yard up here once. A lovely female showed up in late winter a couple of years ago and stayed to visit the feeders for about 3 days. They are seen here almost every winter now .... just one or two.

The Eastern Bluebird family is still around but their visits are waning. I guess they'll be moving on soon. It's been such great fun having them around the yard all summer even if they didn't actually nest in my yard. Yesterday, I saw the adult male and 2 juveniles on the light post at the end of my driveway and

I heard a bit of sad story about 'my' resident Ruffed Grouse yesterday.

A neighbour told my husband that at one point this summer, he saw a female Grouse in the woods behind our houses and she had 7 young ones with her. Now, apparently, she is down to only 1. The culprit appears to Juvenile Male Downy be a neighbourhood cat.

Legion News August looks like it is giving us MORE hot weather so we can spend more time at camp or at the local beach. Those of my age will likely take it easy and stay cool and enjoy our decks or patios.

At the Branch things look very quite but behind the scenes we are getting ready for our work which starts in September.

This day, being National Peace Keepers Day, let us think

of all those brave Canadians who did tours in Cyprus, Kosovo, The Golan Heights and other places and to those who are now deployed in Ukraine, Irak and Syria. One of my grandsons is getting ready to do his part soon and I wish him well. My son and 2 more grandsons have done their tours.

This teacher explained to his class the physics of Hot and Cold on materials. He

explained that heat makes things expand and cold makes them shrink.

He asked the class if anyone had a example. So Johnnie put up his hand and said, "Summer recess is 6 weeks and Christmas vacation only 2!"

To all our Comrades sick at home, in the hospital or nursing homes you are in our thoughts and prayers and we wish you well.

Al Hardy's OPP Retirement Celebration Facing The Heat

Article & photo by Barb Fisher The Community Centre parking lot was filled, the banquet hall bursting to capacity, much fuss and laughter filled the air, an OPP Officer investigates: "So, what's goin' on?"

And with our town kept safe with reinforcements from the White River and Chapleau detachments, the party went on through the evening without a hitch with OPP officers from miles around turning up to make sure.... Al really did retire! The entire town's attention was captured by the arrival of the honouraries to the party in true Wawa style a stretch limousine. A beaming Al with his trusting June by his side took a moment to reflect on their journey to all of this. Even though I have been known to embellish my stories in the past, all of what you are about to read has not been tampered with, altered or hacked in any way. Here is the history as it was passed on to me: Al's story begins in Harriston, a small, sleepy southern Ontario town.

After a few tries of kicking around some career paths, he pondered an exciting life of fighting crime by joining the local municipal police force.

How difficult could that be in Harriston? Things went well for six years until Al felt he must broaden his horizons and successfully joined the OPP, first stationed in Cambridge and then Mt. Forest. Again June braced for the next chapter of their life that seemed to be calling Al's name - a transfer to Wawa.

One drawback to stand-

ing behind your man is that you can't see what's ahead, so June felt impelled to ask: "Exactly where is Wawa?" Al painted a great mental image of our great town nestled in the most beautiful part of the world, and his enthusiasm convinced June that everything would turn out - except they relocated in the winter of 1995, the very year that Wawa experienced the most snow in recent years. As June struggled to peer through the snow blanketed window of her new home, she was heard in hometown Harriston, "Where the hell have you brought me?"

Al consoled her by promising that his reassignment was for only five years....21 years ago. And the rest you might say is history. Both Al and June have made a great positive contribution to the wellbeing of our town. They reared two sons David and Derek who with his wife Genevieve have extended the "Hardy" clan with young Cedric who is making sure that gramma and grampa are never bored in their retirement.

After the great meal, Nick Beith, Constable with the Blind River detachment got the evening rockin' with laughter as June and another beautiful lady Mabel, Al's mum who started it all, seemed to be a little apprehensive as to what family secrets would be revealed.

But the speakers were sympathetic to their reputations and all were in awe as to what strong women they are.

Next up to the podium, Al's brother Fred gave a short review in his congratulations,

as his original lengthy speech had to be edited to protect the innocent. Co-worker Manuela Byrnes lamented that it seemed like she had spent more time with Al than June had with Al, but she had learned many things from her mentor; some useful, others best forgotten. She presented Al with two framed print souvenirs, one being a photo of his police cruiser and signed by all his co-workers. Retired Inspector Ron Faulkner was also Chief of Municipal Police in Harriston many years ago when Al first hired on as a rookie. He extended much praise to the honourable and exemplary service by Al which seemed to come as much of a surprise to him as everyone else. Bridget Apnar, secretary at the OPP office directed her remarks mainly to June.

"June, you could have done so much better," and offered her the elixir to get through their retirement - valium! Staff Sargeant Megan Cavanagh presented a retirement scroll and congratulations certificate from the Ontario Government and Michael Bruni, OPPAssociation presented to both Al and June individually inscribed commemorative watches.

Detective/Constable Shelley Neufeld congratulated Al and June on their 40 year journey together but complained a little of feeling used by Al at the office, as every time he would tackle his paperwork it was the same mantra, "Shelley get over here and fix this computer". Lastly Al took the floor in rebuttal and acknowledged many individuals in the audience who had played a role in his story. He thanked everyone who had a hand in making the evening one never to be forgotten and marvelled at all the accolades given.....to June. The evening wrapped up with the great tunes by Richie Overton and his band who honoured the "old retired guy" with his favourite 60's something musical review - Elvis.

And a few lasting words of wisdom to June and Al: keep abreast of your police training techniques of negotiation and compromising skills to navigate the next chapter of your life - they're called grandkids!

News From The Park Michael Mantha MPP If you and your family are looking for something to do this summer, you need look no further than our own AlgomaManitoulin backyard. There is always something to see, some new adventure to enjoy and lots of festivals and activities happening. I have enjoyed attending local farmers’ markets, art shows, music festivals, pow wows and much more. As well, I had the honour of greeting the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, when she visited Elliot Lake and Manitoulin Island last week.

It is wonderful to have the Queen’s representative visit and to help showcase to the nation the spectacular uniqueness of our home.

My office is always a very busy place, receiving calls, letters and emails from constituents seeking assistance on a multitude of issues. However, one of the most disturbing and unfortunately common appeals we receive is requests for assistance with hydro bills.

Every day we hear from families, seniors and small businesses that are overwhelmed by skyrocketing electricity rates. And it is important to note that because AlgomaManitoulin is comprised of northern, rural communities, the effects are particularly hard hitting.

According to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB), in the last decade electricity costs have climbed 100 percent. Tiered prices in May, 2006 were 6.7 cents/kWh and rose to 12.1 cents in May 2016. Customers who live in rural and nonurban communities are hit even harder than urban customers because they face higher delivery charges from utility companies. According to a report issued this year by the United Way, rural residents pay almost double the delivery rates compared to those of customers in urban/high-density areas. An article appearing in the August 1, 2016 edition of the Sudbury Star states that, “An average household in a low-density area is charged about $84.46 for delivery, distribution, connection, network and other fees, the report says, while homes in high-density areas pay about $44.50. And that's without using any energy at all, it says. Homes that use baseboards for heat pay about $80 a month in hydro rates on top of the delivery fees.” And here’s the kicker; all of these extra charges are just for the delivery of the electricity to the homes. It is not including the cost of electricity consumed.

As you know, this year the OEB launched the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) to assist low-income Ontarians in paying their monthly electricity bills. The above mentioned article states

that low-income customers spend a significantly higher proportion of their household income on electrical bills than average and high-income customers. For example, an average household consuming 800kwh in which the total income is $20,000 requires about 10 percent of the household income to pay the hydro bill while a household earning $100,000 spends only about 2 percent of the total income for hydro. Recipients of the program will receive $30-$50 in assistance. But this assistance does not even pay the difference between rural and high-density delivery charge rates. So I ask; how is this fair?

Despite all the good intentions of the OESP, Ontario has seen a spike in disconnections for customers due to an inability to pay these skyrocketing electricity bills. According to information released by the Ontario Energy Board, in one year from July 1, 2015 – July 1, 2016, nearly 60,000 residential customers had their electrical service disconnected due to inability to pay their electrical bills. Imagine how many children and families walking around in the dark and living without cooking or refrigeration appliances that 60,000 households represents.

This fact is staggering to say the least.

Given this most unsettling information above, the Ontario Liberals squandered millions of dollars on the gas plant scandal and are bent on reducing the incredible debt they have created by selling off our most important public utility - Hydro One. They do this despite the warnings of the government’s own independent financial watchdogs of a catastrophic result. They do this despite thousands of calls, letters, demonstrations and petitions advising the Liberals this is against the wishes of we, the citizens of Ontario; the owners of the utility.

I encourage you to make sure your voice is heard on this issue. Tell the Premier how you feel. Sign the Ontario is not for Sale petition at http://www.ontariondp.ca/ not_for_sale. Work with my NDP colleagues and me to help pressure the government to work in the interests of the people, not to fill enormous corporate coffers and executives pockets.

Driving Is A Privilege!

A few years ago I gave up my driver’s licence. Not because I had any choice in the matter but because it had become difficult to tell the difference between a rock cut on a highway curve and a transport truck. The province claimed I was blind and I had to surrender my Ontario Driver’s Licence.

My first instinct was to tell them to go to hell, but they started making threatening noises and told me that …”driving is not a right, it’s a privilege!”

Yeah! I heard that somewhere maybe sixty years ago.

Didn’t think it could ever happen to me. There were times when I was seventeen or eighteen years old when I was a lot less safe than I am now, even blind.

I can recall some awful old crap cars I drove in the fifties. My brother-in-law, who had a knack for putting together perfectly good “running wrecks”, once dropped an engine he had lying about into an old ’48 Ford Pick-up.

I gave him fifty bucks for the vehicle which was still basically a pile of junk. “Be careful”, he told me, “There aren’t any brakes on it”. I happily drove away with it and used it without mishap for more than a year. Insurance was NOT mandatory on a car in those days and gas was thirty-six cents a gallon in Toronto.

Another car that was a special friend to me was, again, a

1948 Dodge Coupe. This was a big old beast that got about 14 miles to the gallon. That’s Imperial gallons, a measure no longer used … lost in the metric system. Imperial gallons were bigger than U.S. Gallons by 25%.

This old Dodge had a feature I’ve never had in a car before or since. It had what was called a “fluid drive”, a kind of step between standard and automatic transmission.

Once you got it rolling in low gear, you could change gears without using the clutch. It could climb from zero to sixty in about five minutes. Once up to speed though, and that old car could really fly.

I drove it into the back of a recent model Buick and had to borrow money to pay the guy $360.00, a fortune in 1957.

That was the first real problem I ever had driving.

The Licence Bureau sent me a letter telling me I now had to have something called “Assigned Risk Insurance” to keep my licence. Couldn’t afford it in those days so had to give up my licence. They wanted $260.00 a year for that special insurance. Gave up my permit for two years that time.

I was a good boy for more than fifty years after that and they still took my licence just because I was blind.

Just doesn’t seem fair to me!

Food For Thought The proof really is in the pudding since evidence shows Canadians are good at following the recommendations set by the national Food Guide. But could this be the real reason for the continuous rise in our obesity rate?

This is a compelling question as new studies are surfacing about the effects of sugar and trans fats, which may mean it’s time to revise Canada’s Food Guide.

It might be surprising for some that this rainbowcoloured graphic of food groups and recommended portion sizes is the second most requested governmental document after those dreaded tax forms. But, some people are saying what should be a trusted guide providing sound advice on how to eat well and be healthy, may be steering us in the wrong direction regarding our health.

More and more studies are finding flaws in the Food Guide’s teachings. Most notably, in the relationship between fats and heart disease. Some researchers are suggesting that it isn’t how much fat you’re eating, but what kind of fat. Trans fats contribute to cardiovascular disease while saturated and unsaturated fats may not. In fact, unsaturated fats could have the opposite effect and some research suggests it can lower the risks of cardiovascular disease. But it might not be fat at all.

Canada’s Heart and Stroke Foundation is finding that all the added sugar we consume is what’s contributing to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and much more. More so, dairy has not been found to provide any benefits or risks to the health of humans and we should be neither encouraged

nor discouraged from consuming it.

When you think about the fact that Canada’s Food Guide equates a glass of fruit juice with a serving of real fruit or that they consider deli meat on par with chicken breast, it may not be so hard to understand that it isn’t the most upto-date model. It shouldn’t be surprising that a cup of sugary cereal is not exactly the same as a serving of whole grains. A study showed that the most consumed vegetable in Canada is the potato, but what the Food Guide seems to disregard is that most of the potatoes we eat aren’t just plainly baked.

Something to consider is that when determining caloric value or portion sizes, the Canadian Food guide is based on something called the 1997 Nutrient File. With the advent of genetic modification and improvements in farming and food production, it’s not a

secret that many things have changed in the last couple of decades. The size of the typical fruit or vegetable is a lot bigger than it was almost 20 years ago. This means that their suggested serving could actually be a lot more than it should be. It also may be true that while the size of a suggested serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards, most people are in fact putting about three times that amount on their plates.

On average, the Canadian Food Guide launches a new version every 8 years. With our current version dating back to 2007, we are coming up on the ten-year mark and an overhaul is overdue. Our American neighbours revisit their national dietary guidelines every five years and this may be one situation where we should be following in their footsteps.

And Your Name Is? Till I was 13, I thought my name was Shut Up. Joe Namath Names are powerful things.

My name's Art, his name's Joe – pretty much love taps as names go, but consider the predicament of Mister Beezow Doo-doo Zoppitty Bop-bop-bop.

That is the legal name of a 34-year-old gentleman recently arrested in Olympia, Washington for assaulting a police officer. Mister, er, Doodoo Zoppitty Bop-bop-bop did not have that name on his original birth certificate; his parents dubbed him Jeffery Wilschke. Evidently Mister Doo-doo etc. elected for a more exotic name change.

People change their names for all sorts of reasons. Back in the 1930's a strapping young Hollywood actor by the name of Marion Morrison decided his handle was a tad effeminate so he changed it – to John Wayne. Canada's own Shania Twain might have languished in anonymity if she'd stuck with her original name – Eileen Regina Edwards.

Those name changes are understandable – their owners were looking for boxoffice clout. But why would a man named Adam Armstrong find it necessary to change his name to Adam West? For a young man in Manchester England it started out as a Facebook thing. His real name is Adam Armstrong but he posts as Adam West.

No biggie – until his girlfriend's stepfather decided to surprise the couple by booking them a couple of airline tickets. The stepfather entered the man's name as Adam West. When Adam Armstrong tried to substitute

his real name, to avoid passport complications, the airlines said sure, they'd alter the paperwork – for a three hundred dollar fee. Armstrong/ West called up the passport office and found he could legally change his name for about half the price.

Which is why Adam Armstrong now answers to Adam West.

For most of us the problem is not the names we choose, it's the names our parents lumber us with. Frank Zappa named a daughter Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen. There's an unfortunate child wandering around the grounds of Neverland Ranch in California dragging the name Prince Michael II/ Blanket in his wake.

That's what his daddy, Michael Jackson, named him.

Marshall McLuhan said that a person's name is a numbing blow from which he never recovers. That's why it's important that parents get it right. Recently a writer in the English newspaper The Guardian offered a few tips on kid-naming: Have you heard the name before? If not, no one else will have.

Can you pronounce it without looking it up?

Avoid hyphens.

Can a child of primary school age say it? If they look confused take it as a strong 'no'.

And finally: “Remember that your child's name is for their happiness alone and not to prove to the world how cool and creative you are.

That's what Instagram is for.”

Dangers Of Blueberry Picking

“The blueberries are ready!” Maria called out to her husband, Antonio. She got the word from her best friend,Theresa, who had already been checking out the patches. Maria always looked forward to August. She loved blueberries in any way she could use them. Of course, she put the freshly picked ones on her cereal in the morning, in pancakes, pies, muffins, wine, and jam. Then she would work on filling up their freezer. So she needed to pick lots of berries to do all of those things. Fortunately for her, she didn't mind picking them, despite being up there in years, as was Antonio.. He did not pick berries. He did eat them though, however she served them. He didn't mind drinking the homemade wine either. His knees and back gave him lots of trouble, and picking blueberries was just too physically difficult to do, according to him. But it really was that he was plain lazy.

Anyway, he would drive her out to the patch of the day, and wait in the car, doing a crossword puzzle, smoking, or napping until she had a basket full. He would then come over and pick it up, and take it back to the car. Then he would settle in again until she had her next basket full.

This was the routine that they had done for many years. It worked out fine for both of them.

However, on this particular day, Tuesday, August 9, 2016 the routine was changed. That turned out to be pretty much a bad thing. They went to a different spot from the previous evening, about twenty kilometers out of town. They went along an old bush road that lead to the hydro lines.

It made for a wide open area where the berries thrived. It was one of their several spots that they went to every year.

This spot had always been bountiful.

It was a hot and sunny day.

They had gone out the previous evening, and the black flies were ferocious. So this day they decided to go out around one in the afternoon.

It was a tough decision – avoid the bugs, or swelter in the heat. They decided to go with the heat. They brought lots of water, and wore light clothing and wide-brimmed hats, all in an effort to handle the heat. They did put in the bug spray, in case they had to use it. But on this day, they did not need it.

The picking began.

It indeed was a good spot this year, as it wasn't too long before Maria had filled 2 baskets. Antonio picked them up and put them in the back of their hatchback car. It was hot inside the car, so he left the back hatch open, to get

some air inside. He didn't want the berries to get too warm. With the door up, it cast a bit of shade, so he got out his crossword puzzle book and set up his lawn chair underneath. He had his bottled water beside him too.

He was all settled in.

Maria had moved to a patch near the tree line, and found a group of bushes, all loaded with blueberries. She smiled in delight. She took a moment to 'sample' a few berries. She sighed, and uttered a 'yum', before starting the job at hand. She sat down on the ground and made herself comfortable, as she began stripping the bushes.

She had filled her fourth basket to about half full, when she had the sense of someone behind her. She first thought it was Antonio coming to pick up the full basket. To her shock, when she turned her head to face the sound, she found herself staring into the body of a huge black bear. It was merrily helping himself to the berries in her third full basket which she had set aside a few meters away from where she was currently picking.

She screamed, and struggled to get to her feet to run away. That startled the bear, and it lifted its' head out of her basket, and shifted his body towards her, snorting really heavily. Maria forgot all about picking berries, and the number one rule – don't run away from a bear encounter.

However, fortunately for her, it was more interested in the berries. It let out one more snort, before turning back to its' meal.

Antonio heard her screaming, and hustled over towards her. She finally met him about half way between the bush, and where their car was parked.

She grabbed onto him, and panted out the word 'bear'.

She pointed towards where the encounter took place. He patted her on the shoulder, trying to calm her down. He headed towards where she was pointing. Once she realized what he was doing, she called out to him to get back to the car. “Don't go there.

Please, let's just go home. I'm too scared to do any more picking. C'mon, Tony, let's go.' Her pleading had no effect on him. He called back to her, “Don't worry. I just want to see if it's still there. I can scare it away, or at least retrieve the baskets. You can go back to the car, or come with me, whichever you want.

I won't take any chances.

Don't worry. I just want to check it out.”

She hesitated, torn as to which way to go. She decided to go with him. She knew she would feel safer with him than wondering what was happening while she waited

in the car. She caught up to him, but stayed behind him.

She kept muttering “Be careful. It's over that way, I think.

Oh, I'm all turned around now. I'm not sure where I was picking.” He kept working his way towards the bush where she thought she had been.

They were both surprised to realize how far she had wandered away from the car this time. Then off in the distance, about 300 metres away, they saw the bear still sitting on its' haunches, munching away. Antonio started moving towards it, yelling and waving his arms, hoping to scare it away. At first, it had no effect. However, as he got closer, the bear looked up.

It raised itself onto its' back feet, stretching high, sniffing the air. That caused Antonio and Maria to stop dead in their tracks. It stood so tall, and they realized how big it really was, and not to be trifled with. It dropped back to the ground, and went back to eating the blueberries. They stood there in the middle of the field, wondering what to do next. Maria said, “Let's go.

We don't want to tangle with that bear. Let him have the berries. We already have two baskets. That's pretty good for today, anyway.” Antonio replied, “Yeah, you're right.

But there are still 2 baskets there. You can't get that size anymore. I don't want to leave them behind.” She tried to stop him, but he charged ahead. As he got closer, the bear looked up, and this time backed away, and finally turned and ran into the bush.

Antonio rushed over and grabbed the nearly full basket that the bear had mushed down, and her half full one that she had been filling up.

They both looked furtively around, as they headed back to their car. The bear never came back out, to their relief.

Their relief was short-lived, however. As they got to the dirt road they became confused. He commented, “Now where is the car? I parked it right here. I'm sure this is the spot.” She countered. “No, I think it was further up the road, wasn't it?” They both looked around, and walked up and down the road, trying to get oriented. He finally found the spot where the car had been parked. He knew this was it, as he saw his footprints in the sandy roadway as he had crossed over to go to her assistance. He then noticed the tire tracks, as their car had obviously been turned around, and headed back to the main road.

Maria asked him, “How could this happen? You didn't leave the keys in the ignition, did you?” He was both angry and embarrassed, as he realized that indeed he had done just that. He admitted to her, “Well, yeah, I guess I did. I had turned on the radio to get some music. That happened just at the same time as I heard you screaming.

Damn!”

“Now what do we do?

ers out here that we can get help from?” That got him to thinking. He didn't answer her right away. He was trying to remember if any other vehicles had passed him. It came to him in a flash that a blue half-ton truck had slowly passed him, with a couple looking over at him, just as he heard her screams. He turned his attention to her question.

“Yes, I was just remembering one truck that past me. I'm going to walk up the road to see if they have stopped.”

“I'm coming with you,” she stated. So they began walking. It soon became clear that it was not anywhere nearby.

Finally Antonio stopped and declared, “It's no use going any further this way.

They obviously are gone. It must have been them that stole our car on their way out. Well, we're going to have to walk back to the main road, and let's hope we can get a ride into town.”

So they began their trek.

Once they reached the highway, they soon were able to flag a car down. It turned out to be their neighbours, Brian and Maureen Berry. They told them what had happened, and that they needed to get to the police to report their car being stolen. To their surprise, about five kilometres towards town, they saw their car parked on the side of the road, along with the blue truck. Lo and behold, the brazen thieves were trying to sell their blueberries! Brian called the police on his cell phone. They pulled up behind the parked car. They got out, and pretended to be interested in buying the berries.

It was a stall tactic, of course, until the police could get there. Shortly, they arrived on the scene.

It turned out that the two men had escaped from the jail in town just a while ago.

They had been arrested the day before, for armed robbery at the convenience store in town. They had prior convictions for the same crime in several other locations in the province.

A bulletin was issued was to be on the lookout for a stolen blue truck, the very one Antonio had seen pass him.

It had been on the radio, but he never heard it. The report went on to advise everyone that there were two escaped convicts in that truck, and they should be considered armed and dangerous, and if spotted to not approach them, but call police immediately.

As the lone officer ordered them to put their hands behind their backs, so he could cuff them, they bolted.

To the horror of these poor bystanders, the officer pulled his pistol out of his holster, and fired a warning shot over the fleeing convicts. One tried to get into the passenger side of the stolen truck, while the other headed for the driver's side. The officer fired a second shot at the driver.

Just before he got to open the door, he was hit in the leg,

and he dropped to the ground, wreathing in pain, and yelling out police brutality. The other guy just stood by the passenger door and put his hands up, and yelled for him not to shoot. That ended the skirmish. The officer called for an ambulance, and then cuffed the other convict, and put him in the cruiser. The cowering bystanders slowly poked their heads up from behind the police cruiser, terrified at what had happened.

This was not what they had expected. All this for a couple of baskets of blueberries, Maria declared. These are cursed berries, to be sure, she moaned.

The officer apologized profusely for what happened, and asked them if they were alright. The four of them assured him that they were fine, but just a bit shook up, they admitted. “Wait 'til I tell the guys at the Legion tonight about this. They won't believe it!” Maria flicked her raised arm at him, and snorted a dismissive gesture. Brian and Maureen chuckled nervously.

After the police interrogation at the station, the uninjured convict explained that they were hoping to get a bit of quick cash by selling the blueberries in order to buy some food and gas for the truck, as they didn't have any on themselves, due to just breaking out of jail. He went on to explain that they didn't dare try to use the debit or credit cards that they found in the car here locally. He then outlined the rest of their plan. They wanted to split up and go their separate ways.

They realized they had the perfect chance to get their two vehicles when they came across the Ambrosians' car on that dirt road. They had originally came upon this road to hide away for a while, until nightfall.

So it was blueberries that were their downfall, and Maria and Antonio's good luck. Those berries never tasted so good that evening, despite all the trouble they had getting them. Maria forgot about her comment of the berries being cursed that she had said earlier at the takedown. So what started out as a bad day turned out okay by the end of it. Today, Wednesday, August 10, 2016 they are out picking blueberries again, only in a different location this time. And this time Antonio did not leave their car unattended for a moment! And they had whistles to help scare off any more bears that they might encounter while picking their 'blue gold'.

“Carrying the message of Love” with Joan Brooks

Let’s Celebrate This Day… What an awesome week I have experienced. As I sit at my desk on a glorious, sunny Sunday morning I wonder what my topic will be. I only feel like taking flight.

Hmmm! Who Loves picking blueberries? I do, and was gifted twice this past week with the opportunity to drive out to amazing berry patches.

But that wasn’t all I did. For me picking berries is meditational. Driving the rough back country roads, slowly and with precision avoiding pot holes, I touch base with my core and revel in the beauty of the drive. And it seemed I needed deep meditation experiences within Mother Nature. When I needed a break from the heat and back breaking labor (hah!) I would find a copse of nice shady trees, lie down, and meditate on the canopy of branches and leaves over my head.

Amazing! I visualize how I

can color the abundance and variety of colors within that canopy. And of course I doze off until mosquitoes and ants make it a mite uncomfortable to remain prone.

So off I go to pick more berries. I Love losing myself in the berry patch. Memories abound. I think back to my days on our farm and my precious mother sending her tribe off to pick blueberries. I hear her beautiful laughter as she asks us to fill the containers, and, to please pick clean.

I am sure this is why I’m a bit of a fanatic about picking clean.

How about the Olympics?

Oh my goodness, I Love these two weeks of beauty, grace, respect and pure Olympic Spirit. The athletes epitomize the human form in all its glory. Has anyone watched the 41 year old woman compete in all gymnastic disciplines? Amazing! As I write

this, our Canadian women are doing just fine – rugby, soccer, basketball, tennis – our ‘genie’ wins her first match; our swimmers win a bronze medal, and I can’t wait to turn the TV on to catch up with who is doing what. I deferred the Olympics briefly so as to watch my favorite soccer team TFC win their fourth straight. Oh my, Life is so good.

I have so much to celebrate.

Yesterday, my granddaughter Shayna and Adam, their two children – Harmony who is seven and Cam who is three and one small ‘pug’ enriched my Life like none other. Shayna and I reminisced about those nights many years ago when she had a sleepover at Gramma Joan’s.

We watched Milo and Otis and their adventures and of course her favorite ‘horror’ movies. I closed my eyes. She was such a beautiful child, and has grown to be a wonderful little mother who now has a full time job, does part time modeling and is a great little dressmaker. I Love her to pieces. Lots of beautiful hugs, even the pug Loved hugs, and Adam, well what can I say – he is a beautiful

I celebrated getting up this morning and noticed the swelling in my knees (water on the knee) had gone down.

Now that is cause for celebration because I have spent the past eighteen months or so working to strengthen both knees rather than knee replacement. Not easy but acupuncture has really helped and until the berry patch tested me I was doing just fine.

Just need to keep walking and periodic ice packs are very helpful.

There are those who feel the world is falling apart.

But I feel it is falling together.

Video Link: https://youtu. be/79xTOT1ccK0 Dangers Of "Air Soft" And "Pellet" Replica Guns (ELLIOT LAKE, ON) - The OPP would like to inform the public that all firearms, real or fake, pose a significant threat to public safety and that officers will always treat any weapons call as a real firearms until determined otherwise.

Many replicas are made to resemble real guns, and sometimes the "fakes" are painted or outfitted with extras to make them even more realistic. In an area with dim lighting, or while the person carrying the gun is moving, it's very difficult to tell the difference.

Police suggest treating a fake firearms the same as you would a real one. This includes using a carrying case when transporting it and locking it in a safe when not in use.

Police also want people to understand that even using a pellet gun on private property may alarm the public to think it's a real gun. For example, if a neighbour sees a person using a pellet gun in a backyard, and phones the police, responding officers have to treat the pellet gun as

a real gun, until determined otherwise. Not only does this tie up precious police resources, but it causes potential danger and risk to people in the neighbourhood and responding officers.

Elliot Lake By-Law #98-39: "...no person shall discharge a gun or other firearm, an air-gun, a springgun, a cross-bow, a long-bow, or any other class or type thereof within 1.6 kilometres of any dwelling unit located in a plan of subdivision or any occupied building of business." The only exemptions are Peace officers/ Police officers in the course of their duties and members of a bona fide gun club using the firearm at a gun club.

Some manufacturers produce both firearms and air guns. While both use and shoot ammunition, a firearm requires burning a propellant, giving the bullet a stronger push through the barrel. An air gun will use compressed air, like that from a CO2 cartridge, to fire a variety of projectiles.

OPP Search For Missing Boater - Update (GOULAIS TOWNSHIP, ON) - At approximately 5:15 p.m. on August 4th, 2016, Sault Ste. Marie OPP received a 911 call regarding a capsized vessel in Haviland Bay on Lake Superior.

At approximately 4 p.m. on August 4th, 2016, two males headed out on Lake Superior in a 12 ft. aluminum boat with a six horse power motor. Weather conditions at the timer were sunny and windy with waves from two to three feet high. The boat was approximately 250 feet from shore when it capsized.

Life jackets were in the boat but not worn. A 23 and a 25 year old male swam towards the shoreline. The 23 year old male made it safely to shore. The 25 year old local disappeared from sight in the water.

The missing male has been identified as Dewayne Shreve, 25 years of age, from Goulais Township. He has brown short hair and was last seen wearing jean shorts and with no shirt.

OPP Aviation services, JRCC Trenton and OPP Marine Units have conducted an extensive ground and air search with negative results.

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) arrived at the scene on August 5th, 2016. USRU has suspended the search for the night and will resume in the morning.

The search is continuing.

A word from the Mayor of Bruce Mines With Lory Patteri Oh How The Garden Grows As you’re all aware, the Town of Bruce Mines, in conjunction with the North Channel Healthy Kids Community Challenge, installed and planted community gardens at our waterfront earlier this summer.

With the help of our summer students and local residents, these gardens are flourishing.

The basil is leaving a wonderful aroma in the air, the peppers are starting to really take shape, the tomatoes are turning a bright beautiful red, and the squash plants are exploding!

The only thing I’m not sure about are the peanuts we planted but we’ll see if that turns out to be a happy experiment!

Just a reminder to everyone that they’re called community gardens for a reason. Feel free to water and weed if you’re walking by – all gardens need a

lot of TLC. Also remember that you can help yourself to some of the produce if you see that it’s ripe and ready. I just ask that you take only a small amount at a time and that we make sure we leave the root vegetables so that they’re available for the workshop that is planned for the local kids in the fall.

Book Sale Save the date ladies and gents! Saturday, August 20th is the date of the Bruce Mines and Plummer Additional Union Public Library Book Sale and it will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Donations of gently-read books would be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off during regular Library hours any time prior to the sale.

Summer Fun

Earlier this summer, I headed down to Southern Ontario to visit family and had a really great time!

My 21 year old niece Jenn just bought a new home in Ajax so the “greatest Aunt in the world” (her words, not mine!) took her shopping and bought some stuff for her place. I also brought the second of two afghans that I crocheted for her over the past few months. Lots of stitches, lots of love. Had a lovely dinner with my brother and then we then went to Buckhorn for a couple of days to visit with my sister-in-law, where they surprised me with a belated birthday dinner and an awesome,

fantastic cake!

After spending a few days with Jenn and her family, I headed to Brampton to spend time with my “Bio Mom”, otherwise known as Linda. I also got in an afternoon visit with my half-brother Dave and his girlfriend. We shopped, we ate, we shopped, we ate and then took in a Blue Jays game where we ate! We day was hot and sunny, our seats were really good and best of all, they won!

Hop ahead two days and I’m back with my niece and her Mom heading to the Keith Urban concert. I rented a condo for the night that was walking distance to the Ampitheatre since travelling back to Ajax and

back again in morning to catch my plane seemed silly. Plus, who wouldn’t want to stay in a downtown Toronto loft? The concert, as usual (this was my fourth), was fantastic! We were up close and personal – well as personal as you can be with thousands of other people!
