Pit chat - The pit area is my go to target to talk to some of our local drivers who hold no hesitation in describing their race experiences. This year I planned to expand my horizons and stopped to chat with any driver available who's dragster caught my eye. And here I thought that Wawa drivers had the most stories to spin....not so, there are plenty of tall tales to go round. "Pure Insanity" was one such attention grabber, and the story by Diesel Dave Wagner from the Soo filled my note pad on my first stop. To summarize, Dave has attended every Wawa drag event except last year and made history with driving the first funny car at the Wawa drags. He gave much praise to his bestie Diamond Jim, who has since passed away but left giving good advice. "To be successful in the busi-
ness you climb the ladder from the bottom rung. Respect on the track has to be earned". Approaching the Soo's Ed Lofstrom's machine was difficult in preventing searing of the retina as the neon lime of his dragster refused to be ignored, and Rob Horner from Charleton made his Wawa debut run at our track driving the flame spitting, jet fuelled machine The Mother Lode. Tony Diodati from Spanish took the lead as spokesperson in his circle of drivers from the Manitoulin/Spanish area. His flaming red truck dragster "Old School" grabbed my attention, and from there Tony quickly filled me in with info on the preparation of motor building and tune ups for the drivers

in his area. Next I dropped by our local auto dealership sponsors to get an update on their progress. At the TransCanada booth I was offered a deck chair to sit beside King Ralph and was grateful with the gesture as Ralph is definitely the go-to guy for their driver information. Their traditional entry "Obnoxious" was under repair and so side railed this year, but in its stead their Chrysler 300 "Bottle Fed" filled in, so named because of the unique nitro boost it was packing. Albert Guillemette and son Mark, driving for Mission Motors were also sidelined this year sitting out the track action as their dragster was requiring some mechanical upgrading. Ron Legros
