6th Annual Drags - BURNOUT! Nostalgia Funny Car Article & photos by Barb Fisher Seems that our newly arrived "Goose" although picking a lofty perch was facing the opposite way and couldn't see what was going on....not to worry, our goose heard it all! And with a flurry of excitement, smoke, jet fuel and revved motors all our senses were filled to capacity with the 6th annual drag races hitting the strip and wowing the crowd. Lori "Race Manager" Johnson would have been proud to see what her many years of dedicated hardwork had produced and was no doubt sitting at trackside in spirit watching the action unfold. Let the races begin!

tinue to thrill the drag racing enthusiasts in our community. The races are a huge investment for the community and every year has shown a significnt increase in financial returns for the community and the Algoma region.

This event in our hometown is now well established as a quality race on the NAPA Show Me the Money Tour with the Municipality offering a high quality tourism product in which the entire community has benefited.

Besides our own there are four other Drag Race events in Northern Ontario: Kirkland Lake, Earlton, Terrace Bay and Elliot Lake and with these well estalished events on our doorstep it has helped Wawa to capitalize on an already developed market.

Won by local girl, Keely Rainville Friday the track action got underway under threatening skies, but the clouds gave way, the pavement stayed dry, and the crowd filled the bleachers to witness the return of our speed demons and mean machines. Arnie Malcolm from Luskville Dragway again gave the race directions and drew the crowd in with his usual joking and good natured banter. As in other years he gave much praise to our race organizers who each year add to the success of the races turning it into a premiere drag event worthy of top billing, and passed on positive feedback on our airport venue being one of the most accessible strips compared to most others. Dusk brought out the fabulous display of fireworks attended by our Volunteer

Black Pearl Jet Car Firefighters, paling slightly and bowing to the deafening roar and pyrotechnics of the Nostalgia Funny Car and Black Pearl Jet Car. Saturday afternoon Arnie announced a very touching moment as he led the entire racing community and spectators in a moment of memorial to Lori Johnson, to be for-

ever known as "Race Master".

With her family and admiring supporters present, the entire racing community revved their engines in salute to Lori who had worked diligently for the past years in bringing this event to fruition. A reverent "Moment of Loud"!

The meeting began with a very poignant and organized presentation by Dalyce Rutland who systematically aired her grievances on a number of issues: • a no-zone parking ticket issued to her by the OPP without them investigating extenuating circumstances • the loud and dangerous erratic driving and speeding through the school zone in the Magpie and Churchill area • u-turns made illegally on the main streets, and lack of handicapped designated parking spots at key areas such as access to Fenlon's Pharmacy • roaming dogs leaving feces in her yard, and unattended dogs allowed to bark for extended hours Dalyce conveyed much regret that with the replacement of the town police force with the OPP she feels that our law enforcement has lost touch with small town comfort and well-being, and the present system does not appear to be supportive or approachable. She would like to see more police community interaction, more visibility and the ability to reach our OPP detachment directly by phone.

Mayor Rody addressed Dalyce's concerns but since he had not had the document of complaints ahead of time, he had no definite answers, but promised that after discussing the concerns with the proper personnel, he would respond.

Mayor Rody did however give a response in the matter of the parking ticket issue.

He suggested that she may have a legitimate grievance that could be addressed with the Police Services Board.

He went on to acknowledge that the erratic driving at the Churchill area school zone has been an ongoing concern and more attention will be given to the problem. The disabled parking area close to the Pharmacy is an important issue and strategies will be looked at in improving the situation. Other issues such as dog nuisance behaviour will be addressed with the hiring of a Bylaw Officer, hopefully in the fall of this year.

The list of accounts for July in a total amount of $1,235,555.10 was approved for payment by Council.

Council changed the time for its Regular Council meetings from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the months of September through December 2017 and scheduled the next Regular Council meeting in September to be held on Tuesday, September 12th.

The Scenic High Falls Park was created to preserve an

iconic Wawa Landmark during the Great Lakes Power Dam Project in the 1980's in partnership with the Rotary Club of Wawa and Great Lakes Power Limited (now "Brookfield Renewable Energy") for power generation. The park is one of the most visited Wawa landmarks and is a key tourism activity promoted by the Municipality. The Scenic High Falls Project aims to revitalize the Park, correcting existing infrastructure deficits and providing modern, accessible features to the Park. The Municipality has gratefully accepted a contribution from Brookfield Renewable Energy for this Improvement Project which the Municipality will administer and budget for in the completion of the Project between 2017 and 2019. Further, the Municipality will work with the Project Partners, Brookfield Renewable Energy and the Rotary Club of Wawa to develop interpretive and educational signage for the Site, as well as press releases about the Partnership and the Project.

Bylaws given three readings and passed: - 3051-17 - to confirm the proceedings of Council at its meeting of August 8th.

- 3052-17 - to delegate to Daniel McCoy the authority to provide marriage solemnization services.

- 3053-17 - to authorize the sale of Municipal Land located at 300 Highway 17 South in the Municipality to Mark Hughes and Dawn Hughes.

- 3054-17 - to authorize a Transmission Easement Agreement with Nextbridge Infrastructure for the EastWest Tie project on property located at 300 Highway 17 South.

- 3055-17 - to authorize the Municipality to enter into an agreement with J. Provost Contracting Ltd for the supply of material, labour and equipment necessary for the stabilization of the overflow/drain outlet at the Michipicoten River Village elevated storage tank.

- 3056-17 - to enter into an Agreement with the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for the Wawa Lake Waterfront Rejuvenation Project.

- 3057-17 - to amend Bylaw 2821-15 as amended, the Zoning Bylaw for the Municipality with respect to lands located with the Mine Closure Boundary for the former MacLeod Mine in The Corporation of the Muicipality of Wawa, District of Algoma.

- 3058-17 - to enter into an encroachment agreement with Bonnie West and Larry Schneider, owners of the property located at 21

Dear Editor: My husband and I attended your Canada's 150th Year Celebration at the Visitor's Centre in Wawa. We are from the United States. When your National Anthem was sung (which I had never heard before), I was very moved by it.

During your anthem I noted people talking, laughing, wearing hats, and not standing. I though to myself, we are citizens of The United States and these are Canadians who live in a free Country and we should all respect where we live. I was told, "You Americans are more patriotic than us Canadians."

You have such a beautiful Country and we should be grateful for where we live. Let's not forget that we all strive to live in a free and beautiful Country. We should all show our pride by standing at attention during the National Anthem.

Wawa circo 1925. A forest fire around 1920 turned Wawa into a grassy plain. The largest building in the centre is the Balmoral Hotel which is not the current location of the Lakeview.

I think you would agree that the Wawa town site is situated in the perfect spot – a level plain on the shores of a picturesque lake of crystal green water surrounded by rolling mountains of natural abundance. Wawa’s Ojibway ancestors, early American tourists and our founding residents would agree with you!

The origin of Wawa’s unique name is found in the Ojibway language.

Some believe that the word “wawa” was Ojibway for wild goose, referring to the regular flocks that migrate over Wawa every year. The word “wewe” is translated as snow goose, a close relative to the Canada Goose that is common in Northern Ontario.

When early prospectors, tourists and sportsmen first explored and fished the Wawa area, their native guides told them that Wawa Lake was called “wawagonk” meaning place of clear water. This original Ojibway name may have been shortened to give us the unique name of Wawa which we use today.

The Michipicoten Ojibway regularly camped on the shores of Wawa Lake. It was a prime fishing location and resting place on a popular portage and trading route from Michipicoten Bay on Lake Superior to Missinaibi and James Bay. These waters also attracted gentlemen fishermen from as far away as Detroit and Chicago. They would hire local Ojibway guides and make annual trek’s to these prized fishing grounds at the turn of the 19th century.

In the 1880’s Mormon teamsters were the first Europeans to inhabit the western shoreline of Wawa Lake. These labourers were contracted for the crucial job of transferring rails, supplies and manpower from Michipicoten Bay on Lake Superior to crews working on the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Missanabie/Chapleau regions. The whole transportation process covered a distance of 100 kilome-

tres through endless forests, swamps, lakes and crisscrossing rivers.

The Lakeview Hotel occupies the site where the Mormon contractors set up camp during their freighting operations. A small steamboat was used to aid in the transportation of supplies across Wawa Lake.

The steamboats metal boiler and rotting wooden hull was once a unique relic for children to explore during family picnics along the shore. Keep your eyes open for old horse and mule shoes! You never know where they might be found.

Wawa residents are happy to boast that the spring fed waters of Wawa Lake provide us with some of the best fishing and pure drinking water around. A place of clear water is the perfect place to be!

Serena Ryder, Sylvia Tyson And Chef Chuck Hughes Highlight October In The Sault!

The Algoma Arts Festival Association is pleased to announce the 2017 Algoma Fall Festival! Our 45th Season will be a celebration featuring Canadian Icons including Serena Ryder, Sylvia Tyson, Celebrity Chef Chuck Hughes, author Madeleine Thien and Dr. Roberta Bondar’s photographic exhibition Light in the Land.

“What a fantastic group of Canadians for audiences to see and hear in October!” said Rosetta Sicoli, President of the Algoma Arts Festival Association. “There truly is something for everyone.”

Sylvia Tyson will grace the stage on October 6.

Critically acclaimed artist Serena Ryder will thrill with her performance on October 15. Recording countless hits, six Juno Awards, and receiving an abundance of praise around the world, the Festival is excited to bring Serena for the final show of the Gal Pal Weekend line-up, October 12 to 15. Jonathan Roy, new to the Canadian music scene opens the weekend on October 12.

Light in the Land was created by The Roberta Bondar Foundation to honour the 25th anniversary of her flight into space. The exhibition is presented by the Festival in partnership with The Art Gallery of Algoma and the Ontario 150 Fund. “The light

in each image reveals the unique natural landscape that is Canada, from sea to sea to sea.” said Roberta Bondar.

Also exhibited at the Gallery will be pieces from their permanent collection of the Group of Seven and their contemporaries including Emily Carr, Jack Bush and Robert Pilot.

Soulpepper in the Sault features Riverboat Coffee House, sharing the stories and songs that made Yorkville the place to be in the free-loving sixties.

And Soulpepper Theatre’s Albert Schultz will talk with Shingwauk Residential School survivor Shirley Horn about Truth, Art and Reconciliation.

This year, the Festival concludes with its popular Celtic Colours in Algoma weekend. Step and Square dance with Mairi Rankin & Wendy MacIsaac, or see them perform with their traditional Celtic friends as Beòlach.

And Cape Breton fiddler Colin Grant returns to the Sault with guitarist Scott Macmillan to share their unique style of fresh yet traditional Celtic tunes.

Scenic High Falls Partnership Project The Munnicipality of Wawa is very excited to announce a partnership project between Brookfield Renewable, Rotary Club of Wawa and Municipality of Wawa for thee revitalization of Scenic High Falls Park.

Scenic High Falls Park has long been a jewel of Wawa’ local destinations. It has been enjoyed throughout the years by locals and tourists alike as a great picnic spot, for thee view of Magpie High Falls, and as an access point along the local section of the Voyageur Trail. As a key location promoted by the Wawa Tourist Information Center as well as a great place for recreation activities, it is very important to many stakeholders that the Park look its best every day. To that effect, the project partners are investing in the future of the Park by providing for critical upgrades to the washrooms, pavilion, and pathways ass well as investing in new improvements such as viewing platforms and ramps to increase the accessibility of the location.

The Municipality would like to thank Brookfield Renewable as well as the Rotary Club of Wawa for their partnership in this project. This would not be possible without the generous support of Brookfield Renewable, with a donation of $50,000.00 over the next three years as the project completes its objectives.

The Rotary Club off Wawa has also contributed not only financially, but with volunteer time as well as a vision for the future of the park.

Box. New children’s books this week are: “A Family Is A Family Is A Family” and “Go Home Bay”, and in the French section “Pineshish, la pie bleue” and “Cinq joyeux castors”.

TD Summer Reading Club The TD Summer Reading Club started Monday, July 3rd as well as craft club, play with clay, science club and game day.

Some of the programs are sign up and some are drop in so please check with the staff at the library.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. In Store Deals Article & photos by Barb Fisher The Canadian pilot father and son team of Steve and Bob Dengler with Dugal MacDuff have been making history recently in their bid to circumnavigate the world by helicopter. Their Global Odyssey in celebrating Canada's 150th birthday departed from Ottawa July 1 with an all-Canadian crew flying a Canadian-made Bell429 Global Ranger helicopter Odyssey, and plan to make over 100 stops in 14 countries world wide in 35-40 days hoping to become the first Canadian father and son aerial circumnavigation of the world by helicopter. Proceeds raised by their adventure will go to support True Patriot Love Foundation which assists Canadian veterans and families, and Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation.

Within Canada they expect to visit every province and territory's capital city as well as centres with landmarks celebrating notable achievements and events from Canadian history. Wawa has been on their radar as a must stop destination to give homage to our goose monument which stands out as a memorable tourist attraction not to

be missed. The Denglers have experienced some unforseen persistent weather setbacks which has thrown them off schedule somewhat, but nevertheless they are persisting to achieve their goal. The crew's original intention was to land at our airport, stay overnight and offer a meet and great opportunity explaining in detail their quest. With inclement weather navigational problems, their flight plan has been altered and unfortunately their Wawa window of opportunity landed in the middle of our drag weekend. Not to worry, Brenda Grundt stepped in to help and arranged a touchdown at the Laing berry farm property off of highway 17.

Mayor Rody, Brian Lachine and press members greeted the Odyssey's arrival and after chatting about their experiences, Mayor Rody presented the adventurers with gifts and pins by which to remember our fair neck of the woods.

Their stop would not be complete without a brief photo op with our beloved goose, and then it was off to the blue yonder to explore the remainder of Canada's wonderful experiences. You can follow the Dengler adventures on facebook c150go.

6th Annual Drags - BURNOUT! For spectators needing to give their senses a break, there was something for every taste and age. The inflatable jumping apparatus kept the youngsters occupied, food venues offered a wide range of fast food, and always a welcome pit stop, the beer area where Full Beard Brewing Co proudly offered their specialty beer crafted in Timmins, Ontario. When the machines were tucked in for the night, the action moved from track side to stage side as SoundCheck Live in Concert at the Community Centre rivalled the machines in rockin' the town.

Pit chat - The pit area is my go to target to talk to some of our local drivers who hold no hesitation in describing their race experiences. David Douthit from Colorado, owner of the featured Black Pearl Jet Car very proudly showed off his 1969 Nova Jet Funny Car and gave me an extensive history on his adventures showing off his machine at many of the drag racing events across North America. His family has been in the business for 32 years and David has been driving since the first day of legally being able to drive, 24 years ago. He and his family travel to racing events from April to November and hopes to be invited back to Wawa again in the future. Next I dropped by our auto dealership sponsors to get an update on their progress. Geraldine and Earl Crack and Tanner representing TransCanada, joined with Cody Egan with Mission Motors were all pleased with their runs. Albert Guillemette and son Mark, driving for Mission Motors also gave an upbeat account of their track experience. Ron Legros representing Northern Lights Ford was a hard guy to pin down but speaking for him his buddies gave him the thumbs up.

Next I got a great pic of Danny Bradley and son Derek holding his 3-week old son Konnor who will be the third generation to put the pedal to the metal seven years from now.

Ray and Jody Renaud with kids Josh and Keely are a weIl established Wawa racing family and I stopped at their site just as Jody finished the 5th round racing her 1987 S10 small block Chevy. She was still aglow with the exhilaration of a very successful racing experience; there is no feeling like it. I can always count on an informative, informal (to be kind) chat with Mark Young, Claude Valliere and Jocko Millette. Mark tried to explain to me the racing rule that drivers must keep within their posted speed. If a driver exceeds this time it is called a breakout, of which he had just experienced, and which deems the driver out of contention. No matter; all drivers tried to convey to me the adrenaline rush experienced when disappearing down the track for a few fleeting seconds of unbridled speed. Apparently there are few experiences in life that match

the feeling of this euphoria. I can always count on Claude to offer a racing story to fill out my article. He had a major engine breakdown on Friday to which everyone just sadly shook their heads and told him to go home, it can't be fixed....well apparently by anyone but a mechanic from Wawa! Claude worked all night and was up and running for the first call Saturday morning. And again, Andre had an amazing tale to spin. Andre and Dawn Roy are another well established Wawa racing family, and their kids Kendra and Aiden are following in the family racing tradition. Aiden was pumped as he did well in his races so far and quickly donned his racing overalls for the photo op. Andre had been experiencing engine problems after returning from Eliott Lake last weekend but trusted that the racing community, who all jump in and lend a hand in such cases, could fix the problem with a miriad of special tools, spare parts on hand and a wealth of problem solving know-how for every possible problem. With everyone's expertise they worked on his dragster all Friday night and Andre was up ready for the start gate by Saturday morning.

What's that adage? It takes a village to raise a dragster!

By 3:00 p.m. Sunday more than 180 racers had made their way through the qualifying and

elimination rounds and all winners crowned. The number of drivers from further distances increased in numbers this year, and our local drivers gave a valiant effort in rounding out the winners'circle. A big shout out goes to the Renaud family racing team. On Saturday Ray made it to the 4th round eliminations, Jody to the money rounds, Josh to the semis, and Keely topped the weekend off by winning Junior Dragster 1st place with a $1,000 prize. Well done Keely and congratulations to all competitors. A complete list of the winners can be accessed on the Provost Northern National Drag Races site.

Again, premiere events such as this cannot be successful without the countless hours put forth by many dedicated people. Much thanks goes out to Co-Chairs Rob Sanderson, Paul Weaver and the Committee members, Alex Patterson Director of Tourism, Brian Lachine Rec and Tourism Co-ordinator, Wawa Volunteer Firefighters, corporate and other sponsors, the tremendous support of our amazing volunteers and the spectators who support such events in keeping Wawa on the map. 2017 Drags are now a blur in history, but keep your ear muffs handy and mark this time next year for another exciting display of might and speed.

The 'Jaws' Mystery Summer was here, and it was hot. So people were flocking to Sandy Beach on Lake Superior to soak up some sun and go for a nice cold dip in the water on Saturday, July 21, 2007. This was when it all began...

A group of about twenty teenagers we re having a party that started in late afternoon, and was just getting warmed up by early evening. Someone had brought a boombox, and cranked the music up loud. That discouraged others from staying, and so it wasn't long before they had the beach all to themselves. There was lots of activity, what with them coming in and out of the water, playing volley ball, eating, smoking whatever, and drinking of course. About seven someone got a fire going to do hot dogs. Others had brought the condiments, potato chips, pop, and most importantly - more beer and 'medicinal' drugs! A couple of the teenagers had already passed out, while others were 'mellowed' out. It went on until just after midnight. It was finally broken up when some of the parents arrived on the scene.

They began rounding up the party goers. One car was left that had brought four of them. One of the girls, Rita, realized that her boyfriend, Graydon, was not around to drive them home. She became panicky as she began calling out for him. She ran down to the beach from the parking lot where the car was parked, calling his name. She began running up and down the beach, with still no sign of him. She became frantic.

The others got involved too, combing the dunes, as well as the shoreline, with no luck. One of the parents suggested that it was too dark to do anything that night.

They should all go home, and start fresh in the morning. Maybe he left with someone else as he knew he was not capable to drive his own car, one of the parents suggested.

That was shot down by the teenagers. One of the other parents called 911. Two other parents waited for the police to get there. That took about half an hour. The officer, Cpl. Rick Finn, began questioning them, to get an idea what he was up against.

He agreed with the parents that it was no good trying to find him that night, in the dark. He put in a call to the canine unit, and the Search and Rescue squad, to be there for first thing Sunday morning.

Rita was distraught and hysterical. She didn't want to leave, but was being urged do go by both Finn and the parents.

Just then one of the other teens piped up, “You know, I think that I remember Graydon saying he was going to walk down the beach towards the camp there to get more driftwood that might have washed up on shore, to have for the fire. But that was a lot earlier today – maybe eight or so.”

Another teenager then piped up, “Yeah, I remember him saying he was going to go in for a quick swim and then get more wood for the fire.” Rita then added her thoughts.

“You know, now that I think about it, I don't remember seeing him since about that time too. I was in a good place by then, and wasn't paying attention to what was happening. I should have noticed that he was gone. It's all my fault.” She began to sob and shake uncontrol-

lably. One of the parents went over to console her, and finally getting her to compose herself.

Finn realized it was likely the best therapy for her to feel like she was doing something to find him, so he said to her, “Well, then, Rita, you come with me. You other three might as well come too. If we don't find him, I will drive you home in my cruiser. The rest of you can go now. I will let you know what we find out in the morning. We'll be here bright and early. That's only a few hours away now. So don't worry. I am sure he will show up.”

The remaining parents were not happy about this, but understood his thinking. He obviously understood kids better than they did, so with that, they broke up, going their separate ways. The officer and his 'posse' began heading down the beach, with his flashlight casting a beam of light around as they scoured the bushes and beach.

One of the boys commented that it reminded him of Luke Skywalker's green laser weapon from 'Star Wars'. There were a couple of groans, but no one said anything to him. They were too intent on finding Graydon. They kept calling out his name as they worked their way down the beach. They came upon the camp. It was all in darkness. Finn knocked on the door, but got no answer. There was no vehicle in the driveway either. It was obvious that no one was home.

They looked around the building and surrounding area for signs.

There were none. No one had been around here in days. They worked their back to the parking lot. Despite their reluctance to leave, he was finally able to get them to understand that they could do no more that night. So they got in his cruiser and he drove them home.

On Sunday morning at six o'clock it was really foggy on Sandy Beach where everyone had gathered again. Finn was surprised to see them there so early. But he knew that he couldn't keep them away. It was an eerie scene, with the quietness, the fog and accompanying fog horn occasionally breaking the stillness, and the gentle lapping of the water on the shore.

The canine unit leader, Cpl Stewart Sharkton, brought his dog out of the van to get him primed for the scent that he was to track down. He commented to everyone, “I am going to take him on a quick scouting of the area, just to get him familiar with the layout.

I promise to not get lost in this fog. I hope it soon lifts. But in the meantime, everybody just stay put.” The dog, Finder, knew it was time to go to work, and immediately began sniffing the sand. They headed down the beach, going in the opposite direction from that camp that the others had checked out last night. He had not gone thirty feet when he disappeared from view. Spooky, one of the teenage boys whispered. Less than a minute later, they heard Finder barking. Sharkton called out for Finn to come to him. The rest of them followed too.

When Finn got there, he looked down to where the dog was sitting. He uttered, “Oh, my God!” It was a severed arm that Sharkton had pulled out of the water. He then realized the 'civilians' were gathering around too. He tried to move them away, but it was too

late. They all saw the grizzly sight and gasped as they covered their mouths. A couple of the teenagers threw up.

Sharkton apologized, “I am sorry you had to see this. Does it look like it might be from your friend?”

Rita confirmed it for them all.

In a weak whisper she said, “Yes, that's him. That tattoo on his arm.

He just had that done last month as a graduation gift for himself.”

She paused and took a deep breath before adding, “And me.” At that point she collapsed onto the sand.

They rushed over to revive her.

Meanwhile, one of the parents asked an obvious question. “Did you find the rest of the body?”

Sharkton answered, “No, we just came upon this now. We are going to continue our search ahead now. You can take care of things here, right, Finn?” He assured him that he could do that, but felt that Sharkton had made a dig about his competency to control a crowd.

He let it pass, though. The search is the focus right now, he reminded himself.

The fog started to burn off, and by the time Sharkton got to the end of the beach where the rocks took over, it had cleared away altogether.

That was good, too, as he might not have noticed the rest of the body washed up on the rocks. He clambered over them until he got to the battered, bloody, scratched body of Graydon. He pulled him off the rocks and laid what was left of the body on the sand. He called Finn to come over, but leave the others behind. To his relief, they obeyed him.

The two of them had a conversation about the condition of the body. Both were thinking it, but it was Finn who said it out loud, “This looks like a shark attack. Look at those serrations of his severed arm. That is something that even smashing up against rocks could never do. But we don't have sharks in Lake Superior. Bizarre, huh?”

Sharkton agreed, but concluded, “Yeah, you're right. But it's not for us to say. Let the coroner come up with that one. Get a blanket from my van to wrap the body in. We don't want those folks seeing this part as well. Bad enough they saw the arm. I knew it was a bad idea for civilians to be on this type of search.”

Finn ignored the jab, despite knowing the teenagers and parents concern. It would take a whole of cops to keep them away. Instead he just said, “Okay, I'll get these folks moved back to the parking lot.” They were pretty angry about it, but reluctantly headed back as requested. When they asked about what happened to Graydon, he just said it was too soon to know for sure. He grabbed the blanket and went back to where Sharkton was waiting. They got the body wrapped and taken away.

Word spread around town quickly, of course, about his gruesome death. The entire beach area was cordoned off for the rest of the week. But it was re-opened on the following weekend.

It had continued being scorching hot all week and still was that way on Saturday, July 28th. Lots of people came down to get relief from the heat. A few hardy souls ventured out into the cold water, despite the stories, and warnings.

Then about three o'clock in the afternoon, it happened! A female swimmer in her mid twenties headed out further from shore.

Her friend, Diana, knew Alicia was a strong swimmer, so wasn't concerned that she might get carried out by the undertow. Diana was sitting in a beach chair with her wide brimmed hat and sunglasses, reading a book. She kept looking up every once in a while to check

on Alicia. On this particular look, she did a double take. She took off her sunglasses, and stood up. She couldn't be sure what she was really seeing. About twenty feet behind Alicia was an object that reminded her of a shark fin. 'Jaws!' Naah, she uttered. It must just be an old tree branch or something like that. Then it disappeared below the water. She blinked her eyes several times, just to be sure she saw it right. “No, it just bobbed below the surface with that wave.

It will pop up again in a moment” she thought to herself. It did. The fin, and the entire body of a twenty foot tiger shark bolted out of the water, and landed on her body.

That forced her head up, right into the jaws of that shark. She let out a blood-curdling scream before she disappeared under the water.

Then Diana saw the pool of blood amassing on the water. There was no more sign of the shark for the moment. Then a few seconds later it re-appeared, leaping out of the water once more, this time holding a leg in it's mouth. It shook it's head back and forth as it hit the water, and slowly disappeared again, the fin being the last to go under. By now there was lots of people gathering along the shore, staring out at the horrific scene out in the water. Pandemonium set in as horror and disbelief took over.

"SHARK!" People began mulling around, not sure what to do. Eventually a police boat came out and got onto the lake to look for Alicia and the shark. But they came back empty handed.

One of the local commercial fishermen went out on the lake that evening, to see what he could find, just like in the movie 'Jaws'.

He came back okay, and he never spotted any shark, or found any trace of Alicia's body. In fact it never was recovered.

Over the next few days it became a real sensation. Police, shark experts, marine biologists, from both the federal and provincial governments, fishermen, locals, the media, etc. all became involved, talking about the impossibility of a shark in these waters.

One shark expert from Sea World in San Diego, California explained that it is known that sharks can adapt to live in both sea and freshwater, just as other species do. One environmentalist suggested global warming and climate change was to blame, which was altering their usual movements, and moving further north as the oceans warmed up. Anyway, lots of debate raged over this occurrence..

On Wednesday, August 1st there was a photo posted on various social media sites that showed what appeared to be a shark fin bobbing in the water at the mouth of the Michipicoten River. In front of that was a 16' cedar strip boat with a man standing up in the rear by the motor, pointing to the fin.

Underneath was the headline: Come to Wawa to see where the first ever shark sighting on Lake Superior occurred. Then come back to Wawa's exclusive restaurant for Shark Fin Soup, a real delicacy.

That caused quite an uproar.

Some folks were upset about this guy trying to drum up the commercialization for food, especially considering the worldwide efforts to ban this practice. Others were disgusted that he would exploit such a grizzly death for profit.

But on Thursday morning of August 2nd, 2007, his body was found washed up on the sandbar at the mouth of the river. His throat

had been slashed with a jagged object – knife or shark teeth? The autopsy report was inconclusive, the media reported. Of course they had to sensationalize it – murder by a human, or murder by shark? Those were the headlines that grabbed peoples' attention.

Had someone from either side of the argument murdered him? Or maybe he had indeed caught the shark, and got it into his boat, and in the ensuing struggle lost his balance, and he accidentally cut his throat with a serrated knife as he tipped the boat over, and had he fallen into the water. Then maybe he just bled to death? But wouldn't the shark have tasted the blood in the water and tore him to pieces?

Well, maybe he ended up under the boat, and the shark could not get to him? How about the shark was scared off by the encounter and struggle getting hauled into the boat, and then getting dumped out of, so he just swam away to recover? Lots of questions, but no answers.

The following day his boat was found washed up at the mouth of the Michipicoten River. There was a huge hole along one side. It was rumoured that it was likely from the shark attack, although the authorities tried to downplay that fear by suggesting it could have been caused by smashing into the rocky shore before finally getting beached on the sand. That was all part of the debate, and it became the talk of the town for the rest of the summer. It was never resolved, and by the fall it became a cold case.

No more shark sightings were reported on Lake Superior until Saturday, July 19th, 2008, exactly one year since the first occurrence. But this time there were 2 sharks spotted out in Michipicoten Bay by a couple of people walking along the Old Government Dock beach. Before long, the word had spread all over town. The rumour mill had the story as being a mass migration to the area. Also out there was a suggestion that maybe it was a pair that came here to mate, and then there would be who knows how many babies to watch out for later on. It hit its' peak when it was reported that Walter Sharkington, a well known local fisherman who spent lots of time out on the Lake, had not returned from a day of fishing, the same day as the sighting, Saturday, the 19th.

His wife reported him missing on Monday, July 21st. A search party headed out to look for him. All they found was his small aluminum boat turned upside down on the rocks, about ten km down the coast from the mouth of the river.

There was no sign of him, but there was what appeared to be dried blood on the side of the boat, and a big dent in the aluminum. No one could be sure if it was from a shark attack, or just from being battered on the rocks.

As of today, Wednesday, July 23, 2008, he is still missing and presumed dead.

It's odd, though that no other sightings of sharks has occurred – just that one day. It's a real mystery. Was it really sharks the couple saw that started the buzz in the first place? Or if really there, did they just move on to another part of the Lake. Will there be more this year, or is that it? It's just a matter of time most folks fear. Now there is concern again this year about what might happen during the Salmon Fish Derby coming up in August.

Last year it was a hot topic. We'll see soon enough.

OBITUARY AVIS, W. Robert “BOB” Died today – August 4, 2017 after celebrating his 79th birthday onJuly 26th. He died on his terms. Cancer ended his life but not his spirit. Left behind was his 4th wife, Debra Tomas Avis and his 2 cats, Summer and Sam. He was the son of Anne and Laurier “Larry” LaChapelle. His children, either by birth or by choice are Dawn Wright, Russell LaChapelle, Ron Davidson (Lynne “Jo”Miller), Rick Davidson (Robin Marshall), Roland LaChapelle (Diane Therrien), Leanne Briere and Charlene Burford (Ken Lewis).

Bob had numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He was “Grandpa Bob” to 2 of his granddaughters, Chelsey Briere and Willow Burford. Bob married into the big Tomas clan – mother-in-law, Dorothy (Fern), Deanna Tomas (Bill Woodcock), Nancy Witty (Gary), Susan Morrow (Mike), Marlene (Jenny Bain), Steven Tomas (Mary) and Charles (Malissa). Bob is survived by his sisters, Yvette Wicksted (Dave) and Yvonne Maw (Arthur), brothers Duane LaChapelle (Louise) and Ken LaChapelle (Sue).

Also missing Bob are his special friends like Sue LaChapelle who could always make him smile and Hunter Lobban who went to lunch with him at Bob’s favorite restaurant, the Embassy. Bob was a printer by heart and by profession owning the Algoma News Review/Wawa Print & Litho from February 1, 1977 to August 31, 2007. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Wawa and the latest President of the Wawa Goose Club. Wawa was Bob’s home since 1972 and although he thought he would be here for less than a year, he never left. Again, by choice. His lottery dream was to purchase the old Hudson Bay store and convert it into an animal shelter. There would also be a coin & stamp store and a restaurant called “Uncle Bob’s Burgers” where he would flip burgers and serve Diet Pepsi. Limited hours and a limited menu and open whenever he wasn’t tending to the cats and dogs in the shelter. They brought also a friend along from Germany who was awestruck about the size of our province. He declared, “900 kilometres! Wow, you could travel from Denmark to Italy, but he was also genuinely impressed about the ability to swim, water ski, and do stunts with a seadoo, and even heard the wolves howling in the distance.

After my enthusiastic bunch of parents and teenagers left, I stripped and washed bedding and towels to distract from my sadness on goodbyes and was too lazy after all that to take my dog, Mickey for his walk.

The easy solution was to take ball, chucked, and dog to William Teddy Park and let chase after the ball while I would pickup (as always) garbage. At the entrance lay a large spruce tree across the road and a sign. I parked close to the highway and walked by the obstruction. We moseyed around the shore and bushes and as I admired the view from the shallow sandy edge of the lake, and with our little town in the distance, I noticed a paddle boat. It was broken and stuck in the sand. How odd, I thought. I walked by the dete-

riorated, weathered sign that stated, “A Sign of History – Adopted by the Rotary Club…” and passing the large, flower decorated cross. I was wondering who “Timo” was, who deserved such a place of honor and remembrance?

Through all our exploring, (yes the geocache is still there hidden), I was glad to see the ruts were straightened out and some brushing had been done – but some stinking, rotten piles of grass clipping were still obvious and hidden under the bushes. Hidden was a black garbage bag – the stench was so awful – what could possibly be in it? Rotten fish? On another spot I could see someone made an oil change… at a piece of history? How disrespectful can one get?

On my drive back to town my thoughts wandered. Why was the area cordoned off? and the ruts smoothed out and some brushing done? But then I also remembered two years ago when the doors of all our local people who had an impact on our history had been setup, that I asked the late Lori Johnson, our Director of Tourism, if a sign had been made for William Teddy; after all he was the one who found gold there approximately 100 years ago. Her answer was “It is in the making”.

Now it made sense to me (in my naive imagination), the

Township is cleaning up and making it a park again in honour of William Teddy, for people to hike and swim. Little did I know that I lived history that day, the 8th of August – my last drive into the park!!

The next day on my way to the berry patch, big trucks and machinery put large pieces of concrete and a “closed” sign up.

The friend that was with me, explained that she had heard through the Wawa-news that some moron dumped raw sewage into the lake, our drinking water; and that the township is frustrated and exhausted about all the mess and destruction out there – and closed it permanently down!

I was shocked to say the least. Another place we lost to enjoy nature, due to dumpers and irresponsible litterers, like Surluga Road and Driftwood Beach. Soon it will be Vallee Park, today it is William Teddy.

At William Teddy Campground ‘Summer of 70’ – Around the picnic table were our hosts, standing with a white t-shirt is Willy Grundt. Seated in the lawn chair is Karin with

Marcus and Kai. My late husband, Willy was a maintenance man more than 40 years ago, helping in his spare time, the Rotary Club of Wawa to keep the camping place in tip-top shape. There were power outlets, toilets and yes, showers. Grass to be cut and trash bins to be emptied. During those days he met many nice campers and one American family in particular, took a liking to Willy, and invited us to an outdoors brunch.

Over an open fire they cooked up a huge pan of “Texas Eggs”, which my young boys enjoyed.

They also enjoyed feeding the fire with sticks and dry branches. Many boatings started from the boat launch there, and a splash at the small beach on the other side.

Now all this is now history, due to some inconsiderate people! Why do we let the slobs win? We have the technology

today. We have cameras that could catch the culprits? What is wrong with us law abiding citizens? Why do we let these pigs who have no respect, win and deprive us of all that is precious? And valuable?
