5th Annual Drags A Blur In History Office/Store Hours: Monday To Friday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Jocko Article and photos by Barb Fisher   Race Manager Lori Johnson, although having family commitments elsewhere this weekend, can be proud of her vision and accomplishment of putting Wawa on the "drag racing circuit" map. Five years ago her diligence, persistence and just plain hard work brought drag racing to Wawa and we can add this event to the long list of "things to do in our great town". Thanks Lori for your forsight and hard work enabling the 5th Annual Provost Northern Nationals Drag Races to continue to thrill the drag racing enthusiasts in our community.   The races are a huge investment for the community and every year has shown a significant increase in financial returns for the community and the Algoma region. This event in our hometown has won the reputation as a quality race on the NAPA Show Me the Money Tour with the Municipality establishing a high quality tourism product in which the entire community has benefited. Besides

our own there are four other Drag Race events in Northern Ontario: Kirkland Lake, Earlton, Terrace Bay and Elliot Lake and these well established events on our doorstep have helped Wawa to capitalize on an already developed market.   The action began Thursday night, not with the usual street parade of racers as the rain threw a curve ball, but in the lounge of the Wawa Motor Inn. Our very own dj Kilotile, Preston Plante got everyone's motor revving and provided great tunes to enjoy some pre-pit chat with a touch of bragging as the evening rocked on. Friday the track action got underway under beautiful sunny skies. Arnie Malcolm from Luskville Dragway again gave the race directions and drew the crowd in with his usual joking and good natured banter. As in other years he gave much praise to our race organizers who each year add to the success of the races turning it into a premiere drag event worthy of top billing, and passed on positive feedback on our airport venue

Obnoxious being one of the most accessible strips compared to most others. Dusk brought out the fabulous display of fireworks attended by our Volunteer Firefighters, paling slightly and bowing to the deafening roar and pyrotechnics of Chicago Rush and Diesel Dave's Alcohol Funny Car. As nighttime closed in Richard Hutchins wowed the crowd on two wheels in his Chevy Rebellion Wheelstander truck offering a spectacular show which has won him notoriety in the Guinness World Book of Records.   Saturday provided something for every taste and age at track side. The inflatable jumping apparatus kept the youngsters occupied, Wilderness Helicopters offered sightseeing flights, food venues offered a wide range of fast food, and always a welcome pit stop, the beer beverage area. T-shirt venues with Peter Moore of TransCanada Chrysler partnering with RBC, and Zoo Casuals from Sudbury partnering with Martin's Trailers from the Soo both offered for sale commemorative t-shirts

and sweatshirts, with all funds generated to be donated to help out the Wawa family who holds a very special place in our hearts. With the rain in mid afternoon interrupting the track action, the crowd and drivers did not miss a heat as they joined everyone to celebrate, socialize, kick back and enjoy the great tunes by Bone Yard, live at the Community Centre.   Since I suck at photography, for the past few drag events I have found that mingling with the local drivers in the pits helps authenticate my reporting. I need only to ask for a few words to describe each racers' success and wow, I've had to seriously edit my notes to meet censorship in

newspaper reporting. But what I can tell you is Ron Legros, driving for Northern Lights Ford has done well in his past racing history in four of the other circuit venues and expects to do well here in his hometown. Father and son, Danny and Derek Bradley, driving under several Wawa sponsors also finished with impressive placements in Elliot and Kirkland Lake drags. Andre Roy added an unbelievable but true recount of his Saturday racing day. His tires wore out after his first race. Not to be deterred, he simply changed the tires to new ones between races, met his next race call, won that race and won the next race in his category. Andre and Dawn's kids Kendra and Aiden also race, but sat this year out hoping to get out on the track next year. I never know when I may fall into a tidbit of info to help me in my reporting, and thanks to Kendra's great school speech on the subject of drag racing, I have gained a little more understanding of the power hitting the pavement. She explained the importance of squeeling the tires on the pavement before takeoff. It is to warm the rubber making them sticky to gain greater traction in a quick take-off.
