Wawa Salmon Derby Celebrates 35 Years Of Angling Success

Article & photos by Barb Fisher It has been a busy summer for me covering the many varied summer events taking place in our great community. In recent years I have hung my net in drydock and rely on the diehard fisherpeople to bring me up to speed on the excitement of landing the "big one", and this year with the 87 teams registered there was a boatload of excitement going on.

This is the 35th year that Brad Buck has hosted the Wawa Salmon Derby; an exposition in angling expertise sprinkled with a generous dose of fish story tales. In the early years Brad partnered with Gary Sittler and together co-founded the derby, the headquarters and weigh-in station initially being located at the old ski hill and later moved to the present Marina where every August since, this premiere event in fishing at its finest has all unfolded. The weather threatened rain but the sun prevailed making the lake calm enough to test the endurance of the 87 registered teams in their angling wiles....or luck, to bring in the big one.

Friday was officially registration day for the three day event, but for the five days leading up to Friday, anglers could submit their catch to be eligible for the pre-derby prize for each of these five days. Saturday morning filled their tummies with

a great pancake breakfast and set the pace for the anglers to get out on the lake and fill their boats. I walked about the marina, checking out the scoreboard and chatting with anyone willing to exchange their secret tips.

Fish seemed to be numerous and at the top of their weight cycle this year with weights been recorded heavier than the past few derbies. This year there seems to be a growing number of novice fishermen new at the game and out of the 87 teams, 43 teams were from Wawa with the rest being out-of-towners, some from the States and one team from BC. The weather turned a little nasty on Saturday evening with fog and high waves setting in so all anglers were instructed by the safety team to return early to terra firma to submit their catch and tags and regroup for the Saturday evening fish fry.

Sunday again featured a pancake breakfast and promptly at 1:00 p.m. all lines were pulled as the prizes were readied for presentation with a delectable aroma of the simmering roast beef dinner percolating throughout the crowd.

Thanks again Maxine for organizing the assembly of prizes and making sure I had a complete list of winners and trophy recipients. It makes my job so much easier. Big winners of the derby was again Mya

Rilley who made it a triple-year sweep of the "largest salmon caught by a youngster under 14", and how about that Andre Roy and Derek Lamon trying to hold up that monster salmon and taking the largest lake trout accolades too!

Article & photo by Barb Fisher With our Economic Development Corporation's (EDC) ongoing efforts in promoting awareness of various "Green Initiative" projects, their latest campaign was held uptown in conjunction with, where else but the Thrift Barn where a myriad of recycled goods covering every whim is offered for sale at nominal cost. EDC representatives Jesse Labonte, Nick Dunham and Shawn Mahon attended their booth set up in front of the Thrift Barn and plying passerbys with coffee, donuts and candy floss, took another opportunity to spread the word on Green Project initiatives which have been an ongoing project for

many months now.

Inside the Thrift Barn, owner Jessie Gilbertson and assistant Sue Mattaini offered coffee to fortify ones stamina when faced with the daunting task of deciding which treasure to choose, and when a selection was made, Jessie packed each purchase in a reusable cloth shopping bag included free in the purchase price. The EDC team has offered many workshops and demonstrations implementing a variety of projects, events and strategies aimed at reducing waste and conserving energy: discount priced rain barrels, composter purchase rebate, heat loss detector lending program, and free give-aways - toilet tank flush

reducing bags, and biodegradable paper yard cutting bags that can be taken to the dump and disposed of free of charge. To encourage folk to think about their own green initiative tactics, a coupon was offered to list one's personal strategies which served as a chance to win a gift basket of various go-green gismels.

Since the inception of the Green Project initiatives, there has been a very positive reaction by the community to demonstrate a willingness to adopt new practices to conserve energy and contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. News From The Park Michael Mantha MPP

Well if you have ever doubted the notion that as you grow older, time seems to just fly by – let me assure you that there is no doubt in my mind this is true. Whoever coined the phrase “lazy days of summer” clearly wasn’t a politician. Here we are in the waning days of August and I can’t help but say, where did the time go? But at the very least I can proudly say I’ve made the most of it so far. I hope you have too. If not, make sure you make the time to get out and enjoy all that we have available around us in Algoma-Manitoulin.

I can honestly say that everywhere I go I see a multitude of happy faces, but as much as that is true, when I take time to talk to them seriously about what’s on their mind, the faces become a bit more somber. Recently I learned that Statistics Canada released new data that shows that wages for Ontarians are dropping while the cost of living goes up, with full-time working women and young workers taking the hardest hit on their paycheques. Ya, I know, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to come to this conclusion. But when you hear that it's official, it takes on more meaning.

According to the Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey for July, the median weekly wage in Ontario was down $15.20 compared to the month before. This represents a decline that is nearly double the decline seen nationally. Hardest hit were young workers, whose median weekly wages were cut $40 per week in July; and fulltime working women, whose median weekly wages were down $24.80 compared to a month earlier.

My friend and colleague Catherine Fife, NDP Employment critic, were having a coffee recently and we discussed how it’s become so much harder for people to get by under the Wynne Liberals.

She said that simple costs like hydro bills have been rising fast, but people’s wages are lagging. That means that families here in Ontario are really feeling squeezed.

Both of us agree that Wynne has no real concept of what everyday families are dealing with. She just can’t relate and just doesn’t get it.

Ontario families find that their bills are getting harder and harder to pay, and all the while average workers face stagnant or dropping wages and less stability at work. Too many families in this province are at a tipping point.

Now, for just a moment I want you to think what that term “tipping point” actually means. Sometimes we hear or read a word or phrase so often that it’s meaning kind of

gets glossed over. A tipping point is the point at which a series of small changes or incidents becomes magnified or collects until it causes a much larger scale or important change. Those of you who like to go on canoe trips know what it means when your canoe actually reaches a tipping point. There are definite and sometimes even devastating losses from which there is no recovery.

New Democrats all agree; we just can’t let Wynne do any more damage.

As we approach the election coming next spring, some voters are eyeing the Conservative leader as potential alternative. But clearly he is not the answer. Conservatives have a long history of slash, cut and privatize. Patrick Brown actually wants to keep minimum wage low. For his nine years as an MP with the Harper government, he voted consistently against workers’ interests, and he’s still doing it by opposing wage increases. As far as the rest of the Conservative platform goes, Brown seems intent on keeping it all under wraps until later? (Or is it more accurate to say until he actually has one?)

As you know, New Democrats have been working since April 2016 with many other groups and partners to push for a $15 minimum wage. We are committed to fighting for better working conditions for all workers. The NDP has committed to fight to improve proposed labour-law changes this year, as well as to create the first universal pharmacare plan – one that would give every Ontarian prescription drug coverage; regardless their of age, job status or income.

New Democrats are proud to stand up as a voice with a conscience that cares for all Ontarians and we are committed to doing all we put people back to work and make sure they get the care and support they need.

Via’s Big Plans Could Spark A Renaissance For Passenger Rail Via Rail’s proposal to create a dedicated passenger rail line from Windsor to Quebec City is encouraging for proponents of passenger rail. For those looking to bring back services in Ontario’s north, the encouragement is tempered with some disappointment. That’s because, although the idea of a greater federal investment in passenger rail is definitely a move in the right direction, the new investment being touted is designed to beef up operations in an area that Via already serves. While population density gives the new proposal a sense of urgency, people in the north know that some of the bigger and most persistent public transportation hurdles are located in this region. That’s why they are hoping that, if there is any new federal investment, it won’t be limited to this one proposal.

The truth is you don’t have to look very hard to find examples of the incredible obstacles people in the north are up against if they are forced to rely on public transportation. So many communities are entirely disconnected from bus, rail, or air transportation. Ours is a region that relies heavily on private vehicle ownership and that stacks the deck against those who can’t afford this option or are unable to drive. The difference can be stark as it limits employment options for individuals and can also make it harder to do simple things like visit a health professional, travel for post-secondary education, or even visit family. If need and opportunity were the defining criteria for federal investment in public transportation, rural and northern areas would be at, or near, the top of the list.

That said, there is no doubt that there will be significant benefits if Via is able to add a dedicated passenger rail track in the south. The corridor from Windsor to Quebec City contains most of eastern

Canada’s population and new communities will be served if the idea comes to fruition.

Right now, Via trains operate on tracks owned by Canadian National Rail which limits how often passenger trains can run. With a dedicated track, VIA could offer more trains which should lead more people to view passenger rail as a convenient, quick, and competitively priced alternative to flying. The fact that passenger rail is an environmentally responsible way to move people should not be lost in the equation either.

But population density should not be the only factor guiding public investment in transportation. There are sound economic reasons for public investments in transportation infrastructure for rural and remote areas as well. We have seen this with the studies that show how a modest federal investment in the Algoma Passenger Train supported a multi-million dollar economy along that line. Beyond the strong economic argument, the loss of that train along with passenger services on the Ontario Northland line has left holes in public transportation infrastructure for the region that buses have not always been able to fill. The fact that bus routes have undergone schedule reductions only complicates the matter for travelers who rely on public options.

There are many reasons to support a strong public investment in passenger rail and none that convincingly argue against it. This is the kind of infrastructure that makes a difference in people’s lives, to our economy, and to the environment we all share.

People gave the government a mandate based on a promise to invest in our infrastructure deficit. It would be encouraging if they made a point of promoting and investing in passenger rail – especially in the north where it would make a profound difference.

Official Opening Of The Great Trail

Are You Going To Be A Part Of It?

The Great Trail is a trail that goes from one end of Canada to the other, and we are lucky that here in Wawa, Ontario, we have a section of the trail that passes through us. There are land and water trails, and our section is a beautiful water trail that goes from Naturally Superior Adventures to Buck’s Marina and Lake Superior. To celebrate the opening of this marvelous trail, we are having an unveiling celebration on August 26th!

On August 26th, at 3:00 p.m., we will be meeting at Naturally Superior Adventures to get a little bit of information about the trail and then we will be taken aboard a beautiful voyageur canoe to embark down our section of the trail. Magpie

will perform some acoustic versions of the voyageur songs as we journey down to Buck’s Marina.

After arriving at Buck’s Marina, we will take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony.

After that is finished, we will get back on the canoe and travel back to NSA for more activities. There will be a BBQ meal catered to you by Judy Page, and paddleboards/ canoes/kayaks available for rental to use during this time.

There will also be an acoustic concert performed by Magpie (Lindsay and Adrian Boal) for your entertainment, and enjoyment.

Legion News August is coming to a end and soon it will be September and everyone will be back and on the job.

August 20th has once again brought back memories from 75 years ago where our Canadian veterans took part in the Raid on Dieppe with a loss of 900 lives and more wounded and taken as prisoners of war.

We will once again remember ALL those who served and paid the ultimate price when we start our Poppy Campaign in October.

Thinking of this our Poppy Chair will need some people to help with the preparations for the distribution of poppies this year. With the falling membership we urge all those who can to put their best foot forward to please do so.

Our President Comrade Mary Anne Pearson disclosed that the Fiesta in July brought in $2,500.00 for the Lift for the Legion Fund. She wants to thank ALL the volunteers who helped with that fundraiser and those who participated. A BIG thank you.

The circumstances of the death leave Judy with more questions than answers, and never before has murder struck so close to home.

The Wawa Community Food Bank once again wishes to acknowledge the many expressions of support we have received over the summer months.

First of all, we recognise the many individuals who have provided gift cards, food or clothing items. Thank you to Lorna Chiupka, Emma Desgagne, Gordon Draper, Regis Kenny, Dave and Carol Robertson and many anonymous donors who utilise our drop box. A special thank you goes to Jean O’Brien, a long- time supporter, for her beautiful hand knitted clothing and toys for the children of our clients.

Our appreciation is extended to Zoe Monette and her grade 9 religion class from Ecole St. Joseph for conducting a food drive for us at the end of June.

The management and staff of Valu Mart help us in so many ways, and earlier in the season held a fund raising and canned food drive barbeque for our benefit. SUBWAY is also a valued sponsor, providing all our bread products.

The Canada Day Celebrations, sponsored by the Municipality of Wawa and organised by Brian Lachine brought in a large container of canned goods and a substantial cheque.

As recently as this past week, Wawa Economic Development Corporation held a fundraising endeavour on our behalf, selling Tim Bits and cotton candy.

Agree Outpost Camp from Kabenung Lake, known locally as Tamarack Camp, pro-

vided a van load of canned and dry goods as they close for their season.

Camp High Falls has again contributed much appreciated bedding items and Wagging Tails Kennel has donated many bags of dog food.

Canadian Tire has contributed multiple flats of bedding plants for our Community Garden vegetable plots.

Thank you to Cindy Szekely for her solo efforts at planting, maintaining and harvesting the produce which our clients are now beginning to enjoy and to Sharon Moore for sharing the abundance from her plot.

Thank you to Debbie Lessard of Iris Place for sharing large quantities of ground coffee, originally provided to her by Nick Veldt of The Bargain Shop.

A Heart Stopping Mystery Thomas Hart was a healthy man, at least when he was young.

However, thanks to years of abuse to his body, which included the usual - drinking, smoking, unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, and not enough sleep – he developed health problems, including diabetes, ulcers and high blood pressure, all of which he was popping pills for.

This was because he lead a busy life as a stock broker.

Shortly after graduating from university in 1992 he managed to get a job with the prestigious market investment company, Stockton, Sellers, and Buyers.

That meant long days and nights investing in the stock market and gathering investor clients to the company. Thanks to his hard work and hustle, he managed to bring in millions of dollars, and many powerful corporate clients.

Over the years, however, he did make some bad investments, and one of the more heavily invested clients lost millions of dollars due to that. That was a very stressful time for him, as he battled to win that client back, as well as keep his job in the company. He had been hauled onto the carpet, and warned about his performance miscalculations that had cost the company dearly. He assured the Chairman that he would not let that happen again. He lived up to that assurance for several years. Of course, that also gave rise to resentment among others in the company who did not or could not read the markets correctly.

There was only one other person who kept pace with Hart's portfolio and prestige among the investment community at large.

That was Harrison Smitham.

Their personalities clashed too, as well as their different methods of bringing in those investments.

It also irked Smitham that even though he had more years with the company, this upstart so quickly became the 'darling' of the company, and seemed to be able to do anything without getting into trouble. That resentment went on for years, fostering an ongoing feud.

Along the way, Thomas also managed to find a wife. Her name was Terressa Curtiz. They met at the company Christmas party held at the Board Chairman's mansion a couple of years after being hired. The Chairman was friends with her father, and that is how she got invited to the party. It was instant lust. She was a tall Latino, with jet black hair, and bronze skin. She had the most smoldering brown eyes that just bored into your head and soul, he claimed. She was wearing a low-cut beige evening gown, which accented the curves of her body, as well as the beautiful amber necklace and matching earrings she was wearing. He introduced himself and offered her a drink. By the end of the evening, they had disappeared into one of the bedrooms. By early in the next year, they were engaged. They were married on Valentine's Day of 2001.

Unfortunately by 2013 the marriage had long since deteriorated into acrimony. Fortunately there were no children to worry about. She resented that he no longer paid attention to her. She

also suspected that he was having an affair with one of his client's wives. He, in turn, was very annoyed at the amount of money she spent on herself and the house, and the friends she hung out with. He was also furious that she had taken a job several years ago. As the Chief Administrative Officer to the CEO of their rival company, Thorne & Rosebush.

He suspected she was having an affair with him. Despite all this, the unspoken sentiment was there would be no divorce, as that would not be mutually beneficial to either of them. The outward appearance of marriage bliss after all these years worked well, and kept their social status intact.

On Saturday, July 27th of that year Thomas had slept in and awoke about nine a.m. He had the most terrible chest pains, and couldn't get his breath. He broke out in a sweat. Heart attack!

That was his first thought. He looked over to see if Terressa was in the other bed.

He was not totally surprised to find that it had not even been slept in. It took a real effort to grab his i-phone on his night stand, and dial 911. He fumbled with it, trying to concentrate and find the numbers. The pain was excruciating and he could only whisper his name and address to the operator before he dropped the phone onto the floor and lost consciousness.

Terressa and the ambulance arrived at the same time. She brought them to the bedroom, and found him half on the bed, half draped over the side.

She gasped in shock at seeing him like that. The paramedics pushed her aside and looked after him. They rushed him to the hospital. They were able to stabilize him, and he awoke several hours later. He was surprised to see Terressa sitting in a chair beside the bed. He smiled, genuinely delighted to see her there. He whispered, “Hi, Terry.”

He wanted to ask her where she was all last night, but thought better of it. I'll ask her that later.

He just wanted to have someone there beside him. This heart attack had scared him 'to death', as the saying goes. He suddenly realized how few real friends he had whom he could talk to. He had no family left. So Terressa was the only one he had.

She gave a weak attempt at a smile before saying, “You gave us all quite a scare. You are too young to be having a heart attack. The doctor says you will need a pacemaker put in.

Your heart is damaged beyond repair. They plan to operate tomorrow. Dr. Morrow says they have the newest and most technically advanced machine ready to go. The computer chip is so small that it is no bigger than the end of a pencil. It can be programmed to monitor you night and day. You will be able to check it out yourself, and adjust the heartbeat accordingly, depending on how much exertion you do at any given time. There is an APP that can be installed on your i-phone.

The hospital can monitor it too, without you even knowing or feeling anything. It sounds like science fiction. Isn't that just the most amazing thing. What they

can do today!” She shook her as she thought about it.

On Monday, July 29th they put the pacemaker in his chest.

He was released from hospital on Thursday, August 1st. On Friday, August 2nd he was dead.

There was a major investigation. Dr. Morrow and his medical team assisted with the autopsy, and recovered the pacemaker so they could take it back to the lab and do some tests to determine why it failed. The manufacturer was called in too to check if it was faulty directly from their facility.

By Wednesday, August 7th it was determined that his computer had been hacked into, and the APP was reprogrammed to shut down at exactly 911. The significance of the time wasn't noticed at first until the police were called in to investigate this as a murder. The lead detective, Don Matthews recognized this as the call sign of a terrorist organization that hacked into hospitals and medical centres, in order to retrieve personal information and health records. That data was sold on the black market for a handsome profit.

Dr. Morrow commented to him, “This is preposterous. This has never happened before that a pacemaker could be accessed and altered to cause it to stop altogether. There are codes to prevent that from happening. It's funny that this should happen right now. I just saw a report on TV about this new crime wave of hackers becoming sophisticated enough to tamper with this computer program. Is nothing safe?” he asked. Then he went on, “I suppose if that is what has happened, they could have just increased his heart rate. That would have killed him just as easily. But to shut it down completely in such a deliberate act, I can't imagine anyone doing that.

In either case, this is murder, for sure, if your theory is correct.”

Det. Matthews agreed. He went on to advise the entire team assembled at the hospital lab that he would be following up on other possibilities. He got the assurance from them that the pacemaker was not faulty before leaving their facility. He took the pacemaker with him, despite the objections of Dr. Morrow and the manufacturer.

He signed a written note that he would take responsibility for it's safe return to them after all the legal matters had been cleared up, which he reminded them included the trial once they had the case solved. He went back to the police computer crime unit for some information and see if they could find who had hacked it. While they were doing that, he went back to old-fashioned police investigation work.

He ended up with 3 possible suspects who might have wanted to see Hart dead. They were Harrison Smitham, Philip Walker, and of course the wife, Terressa Curtiz.

The first person he interviewed was Philip Walker. He was a client who had lost a lot of money in a bad investment that Hart had recommended.

He owned 'Walker Wireless Computer Sales and Service' until he had to declare bankruptcy earlier in 2013. He soon realized that he had the technical know-how to do such a hack job. He also had the motive and means. After his interview, he kept him on the list of suspects.

Next up was Terressa Hart.

She admitted that she was finally going to divorce him, in order to get her half of the commu-

nal property as required by law.

She was going to marry Horace Spooner. He was the CEO of Thorne & Rosebush whom she worked for, and indeed had become her lover. She had confronted her husband just two days prior to his untimely death.

He wouldn't agree to it. Matthews had learned this from her after intense questioning. But she insisted that she didn't kill him so she could get the entire estate for herself. She assured him that she knew nothing about computers and hacking was way beyond her imagination or capabilities.

That seemed reasonable to him, but knew she could have hired someone to do it for her. He wrapped up the interview, with her still on the list.

Finally it was Mr. Smitham's turn to be interviewed. He was a crusty old so-and-so, Matthews soon realized as he began his interrogation. He learned about their rivalry and their hatred of each other. But he assured Matthews that he wouldn't know how to hack into a computer.

Besides, he admitted, “If I was going to kill him, I would have just shot him or stabbed him – nothing so elaborate and devious as that.” That made sense to Matthews. His bluntness also convinced him that he likely was not the murderer. But just a bit later, he also was surprised to learn from him that he had been in love with Terressa years ago, and actually he was the one who brought her to that Christmas party, but left empty-handed when Hart ended up taking her home. Another factor in the build-up of his hatred for him, and thus a motive. So, he decided to keep him as a suspect for the moment, although low on the list.

By the end of the afternoon of Monday, August 12th he went back to the police lab. He wanted to see if they had come up with any names of the terrorist group know as ' 911'.

Instead he was stunned to learn who the hacker really was.

He was amazed how quickly they had been able to track this person down. It was a 17-year old student from Halifax, Nova Scotia by the name of Steven Warden. He immediately flew down to interview him. The RCMP had arrested him and was being held at their headquarters.

That was held on Tuesday, August 13th. He was quite cooperative. It was apparent that he was really scared that he had been found out, and what the consequences of what he had done might be. He explained, “I found this request on Facebook about someone wanting to do some computer information manipulation.

He identified himself as a researcher at the Heart Institute connected with the University of Toronto. There was an official looking logo, so it looked legitimate. It sounded intriguing and a challenge and fun, plus the money I would get for doing this. I was told that this was just an experiment on a lab rat, and not a human to test the security system to ensure it was hack proof. Once I disabled the pacemaker, I panicked when I could not get it to start up again. I notified the contact on Facebook about the problem. That was about nine that morning. He assured me that he would fix it at his end shortly, and my services were no longer needed. He ended by congratulating me on being the first person to perform such a procedure, but regretted that it

would have to remain a secret.

I was glad of that. I certainly didn't want to be found out what a mistake that I had made by doing this hacking.”

Matthews knew that he was sincere. He wasn't sure what legal ramifications there would be for him. It hadn't registered earlier, but it suddenly hit him that Warden said this happened about nine. To be precise, it was 911. That is all that meant.

This had nothing to do with the terrorist organization that he had originally thought had been involved. He was disturbed how such small clues can lead you in the wrong or the right direction. He had one last request for Warden. That was to reveal his Facebook contact. He was surprised at the name.

He rushed back to his office in Toronto. Today, Wednesday, August 14th, he got an arrest warrant issued for Miguel Curtiz, Terressa's father. Upon questioning, he broke down and explained his situation. “Once I learned from my daughter about my son-in-law's heart attack, and the new pacemaker being installed, I recognized the perfect opportunity to kill him off, so Terressa could get control of his estate. Then I could tap into that money myself, through her.

I needed the money desperately, as I too had lost heavily in the stock market, thanks to him. I have some gambling debts to pay off. I have been able to stall them for awhile, but they were now getting serious about me paying up. I saw this report on TV about the possibility of hacking into computer systems that could alter pacemakers in a disastrous way. It seemed ideal, and untraceable back to me. I got my friend Philip Walker to create this Facebook message, complete with an official looking address. We got a response, and told him what to do. It worked too. Sorry the kid got caught.

Guess we don't enough about computers, do we? You guys are good.” Matthews agreed.

He marveled how technology could be used for good or bad, depending on the situation, or the person. This one had terrifying implications, he thought. He wondered how the legal system would handle this 'first of a kind' case.

He sighed as he left Curtiz to be processed for Hart's murder, joking to the clerk, “Well, that solves this heart-stopping mystery, doesn't it?” The clerk groaned in jest at the word play.

“Leave it up to you to come up with such a groaner, Matthews!”

He waved him away as he went back to his paperwork.

Matthews began the process to get another arrest warrant issued, for Walker this time.

While waiting for the paper work to get finished he decided to see Terressa to give her the news about her father. He wondered if she didn't know about what her father had done, or were they in this together. Suspicious minds never rest, he thought to himself. Can I ever turn it off? He put that question to rest for the moment, as he approached the Hart residence. He knocked on the door, ready to see how this meeting would go. He knocked a bit louder the second time, after getting no response. As in most mystery stories, the door was ajar. He opened it and poked his head in, calling out her name... Oh, boy, today isn't over yet, and is he in for a surprise, and another mystery to solve!

How Parents Can Make School Drop-Offs A Breeze

(NC) Smooth drop-offs start with stress-free mornings. Learn how to achieve both this school year with these practical tips.

Try DIY breakfast.

Reduce time in the morning by simplifying breakfast. Set out some plates and cereal, chopped fruit, bread, cheese and yogurt to let the kids serve themselves, or keep these items on lower shelves in the fridge so little ones can access everything they need.

Start a launch pad.

Organizing experts say having a designated spot in your entryway for things like the kids' lunch boxes, backpacks, textbooks, permission slips and coats is a great way to keep things tidy and to make sure no one forgets anything. The launch pad can be a basket, bench or other container, and it helps if each child has their own.

Plan your route.

School zones are becoming more dangerous. According to a recent CAA survey, the top two hazardous driving behaviours that motorists perform in a school zone are speeding and distracted driving. For a smoother morning, try parking a couple of blocks away and walking the rest of the way with your children.

The high school year feels like it just finished, and no doubt graduates are still thinking more about their prom and graduation parties than they are their pending arrival in the post-secondary world.

But school choices are now in, and once summer vacation hits it will be time to start thinking about and preparing for their first year after high school.

“Post-secondary school is not like high school, and the workload, expectations and independence can catch some students off guard,” says Heather Cummings, Executive Director, Student Success, Fanshawe College.

“Dedicating a little bit of time over the summer to get ready and familiarize yourself with your new school can make a huge difference once classes start after Labour Day.” Fanshawe offers the following five tips to help recent graduates get ready for their first year: 1. Be social.

Today’s youth are already active on social media. It is their top source of information. Seek out where your school is on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and perhaps even Snapchat, and follow them.

They will be providing key information about upcoming events and resources available for incoming students. If you come across any online groups, join in the conversation. You may make some new friends before the school year even begins.

2. Get to know the school and surrounding neighbourhood.

Plan a safe route to walk or bike.

Follow the rules while behind the wheel.

Tips And Pointers To Prepare For The First Year Of Post-Secondary Many schools offer times in the summer when you can visit and tour the campus, check out the facilities and amenities, check out the area around the campus, pick up your student card, engage with various student organizations and clubs, complete any post-admission requirements and meet other students who will be starting with you — and facing many of the same apprehensions and challenges.

3. Find a place to live.

Maybe you have applied for residence and hope to live on campus. But space is limited and these spots are often not guaranteed. It won’t hurt to browse some of the offcampus housing available. It is also wise to review your rights and responsibilities as a tenant, especially if this will be your first time living away from your parents’ home.

4. Start a list.

There are a lot of items you’ll want to have at school with you — from academic requirements to personal items. Start a list of those things you want to take, and post it on your bulletin board or the refrigerator so that you can easily update it if something new comes to mind.

Build this list throughout the summer so that when it’s time to pack you will already know everything you are going to need.

5. Save.

There are costs associated with post-secondary school that you didn’t have to worry about in high school. Besides tuition, you will have to buy your books and any supplies specific to your program.

There is rent to pay and food to buy. And that says nothing for the incidentals — after all, you will also want to maintain some sort of social life to balance with your studies. Make a budget and start saving. You can also seek out some financial help. Many students don’t realize how many bursaries, grants and scholarships are there, waiting to be tapped.

A quick Google search will uncover several opportunities for financial help. It is never too late to apply. There are also many financial management seminars available at colleges and universities over the summer that offer the support of campus experts.

“Starting post-secondary school is a big transition,” says Cummings. “But it will always be a benefit to be prepared.”

Superior’s Exotic Islands

While the sun and sand of tropical Caribbean islands may be tempting to some, we can all afford to take pleasure in visualizing warm August days on some of the incredibly scenic islands in our own backyard. The magnificent vistas along the TransCanada Highway north of Sault Ste. Marie offer the car traveller views of the pristine isle’s haloed by agate beaches, fertile fishing grounds, shipwrecks, lighthouses and ancient sea caves.

An elusive 5 kilometres from the nearest point of land, Montreal Island was labelled at the same time as nearby Montreal River when included in early mineral exploration by the Montreal Mining Company in 1846. Almost a perfect 2 square kilometres in shape and size, the low lying island has attracted little human activity. It is however immortalized every summer in the perfect Superior sunset shot taken by campers and tourists staying at Agawa Bay Campground and Montreal River Harbour.

The scatter of polished Agawa Islands across from the Agawa Rock Pictographs attracted the first commercial fishermen to Superior’s east shore in the 1870’s. Remnants of a fishing station are still visible amongst the private cottages of their descendants.

The idyllic islands off the mouth of the Sand River seem to provide visitors with the most tropical experience when the sun is warm, the waves are soothing and the fine sand massages the toes.

No one seems to know where these Lizard Islands got their uninviting moniker.

The Ojibway were said to revere some of these islets as sacred and played a role in their local traditions and ceremonies.

Two kilometres from shore, the closest island is called Rowe Island but was also known as Preacher Island.

Early stories about the unique name are mixed. Local history buffs utter everything from “one preacher” to “ten”, with aspirations of converting the local natives, built “a cabin” or “a church” on the island with a large cobble fireplace.

Other anecdotes declare that the cabin belonged to a Doctor. Although the actual origins are murky, the fact that an impressive cobble fireplace can still be found on the edge of the thick cedar forest on the eastern point of the island seems to add some substance to the tales.

The South Lizard Island provided industrious fishermen with a safe harbour close to one of Ontario’s most fertile lake trout and whitefish spawning grounds. The island has provided shelter

to commercial operations for more than 140 years and continues to this day. The steel remains of the 40 foot Neptune IV, which sank in the harbour in 1953, can still be seen.

The volcanic islands off Cape Gargantua invite visitors to explore ancient sea caves, agate beaches and dramatic cliffs, and marvel at their unique geological history. The unique rock formations, shallow coves and narrow passages inspired folklore and legends passed down thru the ages. The Ojibway left tobacco offerings next to the islands used

by Nanabozho and visited by Misshepezhieu. The French voyageurs told tales of Pantagruel and Gargantua while navigating below the cliffs and rocky outcrops jutting out into the lake.

For those adventurous few who have reached the remote shores of the tiny Caribou Island, they are struck by the fragile nature of the small land mass which hosts one of Canada’s oldest remaining lighthouses.

Almost 100 kilometres from the mainland, Caribou Island is only 5 kilometres north of the International Border.

Its low lying scrub forest sits atop aggregate material and stretches of fine sand encircling its small 1,520 acres.

As early as 1886, the hazardous shoals around Caribou Island were protected by a lighthouse to warn all those navigating the popular route from Sault Ste. Marie north to Wawa/Michipicoten and further west to Thunder Bay. The impressive flyingbuttress style lighthouse celebrated its centennial in 2011 and continues to light the night and warn passing ships of underwater perils.

Whether you are able to visit the tiny islands of history dotting the crystal waters of Superior’s eastern coast, or you view them from the shore, there is no doubt that each plays a part in the mystique and culture of Northern Algoma’s rugged landscape.
