34th Annual Wawa Salmon Derby Nets Another Success
Mya & David Rilley: Harry Aho Memorial Trophy For Mya Rilley: Bill Young Memorial Trohpy For Total Weight Largest Salmon By An Angler Under 14 Article & photos by Barb Fisher This is the 34th year that Brad Buck has hosted the Wawa Salmon Derby, an exposition in angling expertise... and just a good ol' time. In the early years Brad partnered with Gary Sittler and together co-founded the derby, the headquarters and weigh-in station initially being located at the old sky hill and later moved to the present Marina where every August since, this premiere event in fishing at its finest has all unfolded. The rain was constant throughout the weekend, but the lake remaining calm enough not to present a safety problem, tested the endurance of the 82 registered teams who were bringing in fish in record weights. Friday was officially registration day for the three day event, but for the five days leading up to Friday, anglers could submit their catch to be eligible for the pre-derby prize each day. Saturday morning filled the fishermen with a great pancake breakfast and set the pace for the anglers to get out on the lake and fill their boats. I walked about the marina, checking out the scoreboard and chatting with anyone willing to exchange fish stories. To my question on the landing of much larger fish this year as compared to the last few years, many rea-
sons were offered: salmon at the top of their cycle, warmer water, more abundant feed, but everyone agreed that larger fish in the 30 lb range caught a few years ago were the norm. It has only been in the last few years when catches were abnormally small, but by Sunday afternoon this year there were several lunkers posted on the leader board. In my mingling I chatted to many fishermen from outof-town and some from distant states in the US. Dave, a sailboater from Marquette, Michigan had stopped at the marina for fuel, got caught up in the hype, decided to stay and camp overnight, offered his services as a volunteer for the weekend and noted the registration dates to join the fun next year. Fish brought into the weigh station could be kept by the anglers themselves, or could be donated to the food bank, a welcome contribution to a worthwhile cause in our town. At sundown all anglers who braved the foul weather to the bitter end docked at the wharf submitting their catch and tags and regrouped for the Saturday evening festivities. I was sorry to miss the evening entertainment, but I have had the pleasure before of listening to the awesome tunes by Wawa's own Smokies and the Bandit, a rough and tough foursome of local firefighters
with our MNR. They were the feature live band but didn't mind sharing the stage with the Tragically Hip on the projection screen, live from their performance at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in Kingston, who took a bit of a backseat by opening for our star performers, Smokies and the Bandit. Sunday again featured a pancake breakfast and promptly at 1:00 p.m. all lines were pulled, the elusive sun shook off the rain and shone brightly as the prizes were readied for presentation as the delectable aroma of the roast beef dinner being prepared percolated throughout the crowd. Myra Rilley seems to be setting a furious pace that is going to be hard to beat. Last year, at 8 years old she stacked up the prizes and again this year took the Bill Young Memorial trophy for the largest salmon caught by an angler under 14 years of age, and joined with David Rilley in receiving the Harry Aho Memorial trophy in the total weight category. The Rilley team did not have time to sit down as they were busy selecting their prizes with their several other winning weight catches. Dave and Rose Aspegren from Goulet River have been fishing in the derby together for 17 years and Dave for years before. They basked in their success this year as triple winners - 4th place for
