CHADWIC Home 11th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

It was a beautiful day for a Golf Tournament, and this year we saw 67 golfers hit the links in support of CHADWIC Home!

CHADWIC Home staff would like to thank WESDOME Gold for the generous donation covering the entire cost of our green fee’s!!

Our tournament would not be possible without this incredible sponsorship. Your support to our tournament has contributed greatly towards our efforts to continue violence prevention programs for youth as well as assist women and children fleeing abusive situations.

We would also like to extend our most sincere thanks to two businesses that have supported our tournament consistently since our very first one in 2008!!

The TON Summit is fully endorsed by the Northern Policy Institute, a non-partisan, federally registered charity that provides fair, balanced, objective and evidenced-based analysis of policy issues that impact Northern Ontario.

The Summit has evolved from the typical plenary and speaker approach utilizing a unique format that will engage experts and audience together in a facilitated, informed dialogue.

The audience will be comprised of three main pillars of economic development; regulators, regional leaders and the economic development practitioners from both community and business sectors.

Over 50% of Northern Ontario’s diverse population lives in five larger urban centres. The rest of the North resides in one of the 300 rural communities including 106 Indigenous communities. The Summit will engage both the rural and urban north grassroots with the agents of economic development, namely government, business, regulatory agencies and entrepreneurs. Facilitated dialogue will lead to identification of key priorities in overcoming challenges and embracing opportunities in the path ahead for Northern Ontario.

Participants will help shape the development of priority statements and attestations guiding

economic development initiatives that, ultimately, lead to an evolutionary and engaging accord on sustainable growth and prosperity in Northern Ontario. Participating entities will sign the formative and guiding document born out of Summit exchanges and dialogue.

Court heard that on March 9, 2018, Bernard and Ramsay were angling on Esnagi Lake in the Dubreuilville area.

During a routine inspection, conservation officers found the men in possession of a combined 13 walleye. Bernard and Ramsay made numerous false statements to the officers who, upon further investigation, determined the men had hidden five northern pike in the snow a good distance away from their fishing location.

It was also determined that Ramsay was using live yellow perch as bait.

Justice of the Peace Kathleen M. Bryant heard the case in the Ontario Court

of Justice, Wawa, on August 16, 2018.

There are seven locations throughout Wawa where properties share a curb stop to shut off/turn on their water supply, resulting in both dwellings being turned on/off when the occasion arises. To resolve this issue individual curb stops for each property affected would be required. Council authorized the installation of curb stops at the affected locations to ensure water services can be turned on or shut off for each building commencing in the fall of 2018 and continue into 2019 with the project funded through the 2019 Capital Budget.

Council proclaimed Tuesday, October 17 as the 18th Annual "Child Care Worker & Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day" in recognition of the education, dedication and commitment of child care workers to children, their families and quality of life of the community.

Council approved for payment the list of accounts for July 2018 in a total amount of $735,845.18.

Council authorized the transfer of three adult, one-month transit passes valued at $50 each and three charters valued at $42.20 each to the Superior Children's Centre Summer Program.

Travel for two members of Council was authorized to attend the Conferences: Rural Ontario Municipal Association - January 27-29 in Toronto, Ontario Good Roads Association - February 24-27 in Toronto, FONOM Annual Conference - May 8-10 in Sudbury, and AMO Annual Conference - August 18-21 in Ottawa.

Previously the Municipality has arranged the supply of a plow truck with dump box for the Community Services and Tourism Department. The three RFP's received were evaluated and a recommendation made to select Northern Lights Ford's proposal in the amount of $59,757 plus HST and licensing fees.

In the past year several building systems have critically failed causing a potential loss of service at the Community Centre: the arena's dry sprinkler system, the hot water system for the primary facility, and the elevator. The first failure was a leak in the north side sprinkler system which proved impossible to patch after repeated attempts by the contractor. The system was completely capped just before the end of the ice season in

the spring of 2018. The second event occurred in April when the hot water tank that serves the primary facility failed prior to the ice removal. The tanks were replaced in 2015 with no warranty, ability to acquire spare parts, service or replacement as the product has been discontinued. The third failure is the elevator being continuously out of service affecting the accessibility to the facility's special events. Council authorized the completion of the repairs to the sprinkler system, hot water and elevator systems at a cost of $103,511 with the funds withdrawn from reserves.

-3142-18 - to authorize the Municipality to enter into an agreement with J. Provost Contracting Ltd for the supply of labour, plant, equipment and materials necessary for the Toronto Ave Water and Sewer Reconstruction Project.

-3143-18 - to enter into an agreement with Dr. Carl Bowyer respecting a Site Plan Control Area for the development of a new Modular Home and Storage Garage.

TORONTO, Ont. — Notebooks and binders, pens and pencils, a new lunch box and backpack, a new outfit — the staples of a typical back-to-school shopping list.

However, one of the most important items to get your child ready to return to the classroom is often overlooked, and that is their eye health. To help identify — and potentially rectify — eyesight problems early, children should have their eyes examined annually, and there is no better time to have that exam done than right before a return to school.

“Poor eyesight can lead to serious academic challenges if left untreated,” says Bijan Minbashian, Vice President of Operations at Hakim Optical.

“An annual eye exam will test your child for near- or farsightedness, depth of vision, colour perception, eye coordination, lazy eye and focusing ability. This will help ensure they can see instructions written on the SmartBoard or vital information from their text books.”

The Canadian Association of Optometrists estimates that as many as a quarter of children have a learning difficulty that is related to vision challenges.

When a child is straining his or her eyes in the classroom, it can lead to headaches, blurred vision, fatigue and eyestrain — and those are likely to be reflected on the report card as well.

Classroom eyesight problems can be compounded with the amount of schoolwork now being done using electronic devices. Children’s eyes are particularly sensitive to the blue light that emanates from tablets, smartphones and computer screens, and should be protected.

But it can be hard for parents to identify when their child may be having vision problems — sometimes the child isn’t aware that the way they

are seeing the world is not the way it is supposed to be seen.

The following warning signs that could indicate some correction is necessary: • Complaining of frequent headaches, eye pain or squinting/rubbing their eyes.

• Issues with school, including paying attention during lessons or a sudden drop in grades.

• Holding reading material close to their eyes or sitting close to computer or TV screens.

“If your child is experiencing any of these symptoms, it could be a symptom of deteriorating eye health,” says Minbashian. “Please schedule an eye exam as soon as possible and help ensure your child’s vision is the best it can be.”

Ford Conservatives’ Backward Priorities Continues To Stall Meaningful Reconciliation With Indigenous Peoples: NDP’s Mamakwa Queen’s Park – In question period on Tuesday, NDP MPP Sol Mamakwa (Kiiwetinoong) said that the Ford government’s backward priorities are moving Ontario’s relationship with Indigenous peoples in the wrong direction, with Ford prioritizing statues from B.C. over acts of meaningful reconciliation, including cleaning up the mercury-poisoned river in Grassy Narrows.

“Chief Rudy Turtle from Grassy Narrows indicated to me that there had been no outreach whatsoever since the election of this Conservative government,” said Mamakwa.

“Yet, yesterday we learned that this government fired off a letter to the Victoria city council offering to take a statue of Sir John A. McDonald off the city’s hands in very short order, after the city decided to

take down the statue.”

With Ford delaying action in Grassy Narrows, hitting pause on a Truth and Reconciliation Curriculum and even removing reconciliation from the Minister’s title, Mamakwa continues to press the Ford’s government to commit to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

“This government was quick to act for this statue from B.C.

but so far hasn’t demonstrated a commitment to reconciliation with First Nations people here in Ontario.”

Mamakwa said that New Democrats are committed to reconciliation and will continue to press for action to improve Indigenous health and safety, as well as economic opportunities for Indigenous peoples throughout Ontario.

Between The Covers TD Summer Reading Clubs and Programs – Our TDSRC has come to an end but not without signing off with a great pizza party. There were prizes for everyone who was able to attend and a fun time was had by all. The winner of the tablets for age groups 7 and up for the English Reading Club is Adelie and Sylvain is the winner for age group 7 and up for the French Reading Club. The winner of the LeapPads for ages 3-6 English Reading Club is Dalton and Zachari is the winner of the LeapPad for ages 3-6 French Reading Club. Our candy jar was raffled off to whoever read books this summer and recorded them in their Reading Club journals! With every book read each child received a draw ticket. The kids all made an extra effort to read and managed to fill a large candy jar as well as a smaller one. Lachlan won the first prize and Zachary the second. Finally, we held a Summer Colouring Contest for a chance to win a large Canada 150 Sheep. The winner of the sheep is Kallie.

NDP Puts Legislature’s Focus On Wildfires QUEEN’S PARK – During question period Tuesday, NDP MPP John Vanthof called on the Ford government for an update on the wildfires, and asked for assurances that it will provide all the resources necessary to protect northerners from one of Northern Ontario’s worst forest fire seasons in memory.

“We greatly appreciate the heroic efforts of the fire rangers, water bomber crews, volunteers, community members and everyone who is risking their lives, and in one case sacrificing their life, to fight the fires,” said Vanthof. “Our deepest sympathy goes to the Gadwa family.”

Jerry Gadwa, from the Kehewin Cree Nation in Alberta, died while helping to fight fires in Northwestern Ontario, near Red Lake. Jerry Gadwa was a 20-year veteran firefighter and father of a 10-year-old boy.

Terrorist AttackboxAt The CNE beside the other wires lay This is my Diary for posterity: Friday, Aug. 10/18. It's that time of the year – the Toronto CNE is coming again for another year.

That signals another school year is not far away. It should be an interesting first day back at my school in Montreal, if things work out the way I expect. I'll tell you outright – I am planning to plant a couple of bombs there on opening day, just to create some death & destruction and make a statement of warning about the ISIS jihad coming to Canada. I have studied the two brothers who planted their bombs in pack sacks along the street there in Boston a few years ago during the Marathon.

They had the desired effect all right. It was just their lack of preparation for escaping unnoticed afterwards that messed them up. It won't happen to me. I have learned from their mistakes. I have come up with a disguise that I can quickly pull off and transform into a second one. On our team is a master sewer who has created my sketch of a reversible jumpsuit.

One side looks like a light blueflowered summer shirt tucked into pale green Bermuda shorts.

All I have to do is undo the velcro seam, and it reverses into a a pale brown tank top and khaki pants. He has also created a reversible wig as well.

One side resembles long brown hair, and the other side is a dark brown brush cut style. It has an elastic band that sticks to my head effortlessly, and is easy to switch in just a couple of seconds. And of course eyeglasses which are easily taken on and off as required. This all helps for me to blend into a crowd easily.

The bomb making expert on our team, Marvi al-Behrain has outdone himself this time. He has made two of them. It's really ingenious, I think. The one for the food building is in the shape of a banana. To set the timer off all I do is peel it, about half way down. The timer and detonator are in the base. The timer is set for two minutes, which will give me lots of time to get out of the building. It looks so innocent, a man sitting on a bench eating a banana in a food setting, and then putting the leftover peel in a paper bag, and leaving it there.

We all know how lazy people are about disposing of their garbage. On my way to set up the second bomb, I will pull out a khaki shirt that will be large enough to slip on over my other shirt, and it will say MTCE on the back, for Maintenance of course. . That will not raise any suspicion either.

The second bomb I am setting up by the ferris wheel ride. It always has lots of people lined up to get on it. Once the base is blown out, the folks up at the top will have a terrifying fall to the ground as it topples over. The guts for the bomb are inserted inside an electrical box, with a three-foot length of wire coming out from it. The idea is to lay the

I will be long gone by the time it goes off. No one will question me as I nudge my way in to get the bomb set up. I have an ISIS flag which I will tie to the chain link fencing around the electrical wiring as I am leaving. That will make folks know it was inspired by ISIS, who I have pledged allegiance to. Our terrorism network is spreading like wildfire throughout the world, just as our supreme ruler has told us for years. So far we have been pretty quiet here in Canada. Hopefully my small explosions will ignite a bigger uprising. At least doing this at the CNE, I should get some much needed exposure, if nothing else. Hopefully there will be enough damage and injuries to visitors to make a bigger story headline. I will update this diary when I get back, Allah be willing!

The third member of team, our sewer and creator of my disguises, Ravi el-Aswan is also responsible for arranging the stealing of a vehicle, something heavy, to run down as many visitors as possible in the parking lot just outside the gates to enter in. I am not sure what he has in mind. That is his secret part of the plan – all three of us do not know the entire operation, just in case one, or all of us gets caught. We were given just the general layout For example, the other two just knew that I was to set off the bombs 20 minutes apart, but the details were left to me. And I just knew that there would be a vehicle to run down visitors, but exactly where and what vehicle he was going to use was up to him alone.

And the shooting was happening after my bombs went off. So this way, we would not be able to expose everything, even if we wanted to. All I know for sure is that it is planned to happen as the bomb go off at the ferris wheel ride. The panic and chaos will flow towards that parking lot for those who parked there in order to get in. Yes, we make a perfect triumvirate to fulfill our mission on behalf of our ISIS leaders I at one end, our costume designer in the centre with the vehicle plow, and our bomb maker at the other end with the rifles. This will make for maximum chaos and carnage that will make for national and international headlines, just in time for the 10 & 11 o'clock evening news feeds. I can't wait for the day to come when we will execute it.

Now for some background of who I am, and how I ended up here I was born Nathan Whitehead, son of a wealthy bank executive, Jack Whitehead. My mother,

Betty, is a professor of economics at the University of Toronto.

I was born into privilege and money was never a problem.

But paradoxically, that has been the problem. We had servants who were smuggled into Canada from Haiti, and paid a paltry wage, if you could call it that.

They were basically live in slaves. They were at my parents beck and call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Mind you they were treated reasonably well, as they lived in comfy servants quarters, and always had nice clothes/uniforms and were well fed. But they were not allowed TV's or phones – anything that connected them to the outside world. The gardener had the tough job of keeping flowers growing in the greenhouse, and landscaping the yard. My mother was very demanding, and I often heard her chastising him for any minor detail, such as the tulips not blooming on May first as she had requested – as if he could command flowers to bloom on any day she wanted.

She gave him a hard time often on the flower selection for the bouquets she wanted placed around the house. Hector was near tears most of the time. I don't know how he put up with it, but yet he didn't have the resources to leave, so he had to put up with it.

The head cook also had a difficult time too, even worse than Hector. Ophelia had to put up with abuse over every meal. My mother always found something to complain about each time.

For breakfast, for example, it would be that the toast was cold, the orange juice was too warm, the bacon and sausage were underdone or overdone.

Lunch would be such things as the salad was too soggy, the soup was too salty or too bland, the parfait was too sweet, and so on. Supper was a hay day for mother. So much to complain about there. The serving servants always got her wrath too.

No one was safe.

My father wasn't around that much, and when he was, he hardly ever had any time for me, except to order me to bed at eight when I was young, and hassle me about my attitude when I was older. I remember at breakfast, which really was the time that I saw him the most, he had his head stuck in the Globe & Mail newspaper, going through the financial news.

When I was old enough to go to school, they shipped me off to a prestigious private school in Montreal. I was glad to get away from them, so don't feel bad for me. It's just that I disliked my parents' notion that money could buy anything. My eyes were sure opened when I got away from their influence.

Well, during the year there when I was seventeen years old, I happened to meet up with a student from Syria. His name was Paswal Infora. We became friends. One night he took me to a meeting that changed my life.

The guest speaker was Osama bin-Nedal. He was a recruiter for ISIS. He gave a riveting account of what was wrong with Western society, and how they were going to defeat them, and install an Islamic Caliphate

state where true justice would be meted out, and poverty and pg. wealth would be evened out, so all men would have equal wealth, and although women would be treated as inferiors at the beck and call of their male master, they would be well taken care of. That part worried me, but I agreed with the rest of his thesis. So after the meeting adjourned, I joined up.

Over the next few months, I was at a training camp up in the Muskokas every weekend. It was a nice swanky 'cottage' with a huge forested area behind it, on Lake Joseph that was owned by a well known surgeon, Dr. Khadar Mohammedin, who was also a secret member. It gave us lots of room and privacy to do our training unnoticed. I thought it was poetic justice that we would be training to take down all this power and wealth right in their own backyard.

I graduated last year with full marks, by my ISIS teachers.

I was assigned an appropriate name for the honour of being the top graduate – Ali el-Barabba. They advised me that they would be in touch once my services were needed. This April, I got the word that the plan had been approved. In June my parents ordered me to come home to Richmond Hill for the summer, which works out well, being so close to the target. He has a job lined up for me at the company he works for. If I had lived a normal childhood and adored my parents, I would have been thrilled at the chance. But with what I have endured and seen with them, it is abhorrent.

However, it will be short lived.

They will certainly disown me, once I have fulfilled my bombing mission. I can hardly wait to see their faces and reaction. It is now opening day of the CNE. It is my big day. I have gone over every detail, and am sure the plan will work. Last night the other supporting team members checked out their parts, and are also sure it is infallible.

Then they had to say that it was all up me now to get things started. . I suddenly had a case of nerves.

This morning I ate a good breakfast, said my prayers to Allah, and got into my 'costume'. I had to laugh in delight that I am doing this right under the roof of my parents, who I am striking out against for the better good. Thankfully my parents are both away on vacation at their annual golf tour in the States with their snobby friends. So I had the place to myself. Just before I left, I went to the kitchen and gave all the staff $100 each to use as they saw fit. I also told them to take the rest of the day off, since everyone was away, and get out of the house and do something exciting. They thanked me profusely. I left them with the word that better times would be coming soon. They looked puzzled at my comment, but I knew they would get it soon...

all the carnage would take place later. I blended in pretty well, I think. My plastic shopping bag looks innocent enough, even though there are two bombs packed inside, and the MTCE shirt. Of course, as I said earlier they look like a banana and an electrical box.

About three I bought my ticket to get inside without any problem. To my delight, there were lots of people mulling around. As part of my training, I looked at them as necessary martyrs for the jihad.

I made a reconnaissance around the grounds to get my bearings, and then made my way into the food building. I found a table to sit at, and I got out my banana bomb. I took my time getting it ready. Detonation time was scheduled for five. I bought a Timmies coffee and donut, and sat there to wait for the time to come. I set the timer and laid it on the table, covered in the Tim Horton's brown paper bag that the donut had been put in. At exactly five pm I set the timer and activated the bomb.

I counted out the two minutes that I had to get out of the building. I was getting along quite well until I got near the entrance.

There was a surge of incoming people that I had to fight against, like a fish swimming upstream.

To my horror and dismay, I spotted our gardener, Hector, in the crowd. I didn't know what to do. I wanted to warn him, but that would mess up the timing of the plan. But I didn't want him to get hurt or killed on my account. That was not part of the plan. I kept pushing myself towards the exit. By the time I got outside, I counted 35 seconds. I turned around, looking back at the building, waiting for the explosion. Finally I heard a slight popping sound, like a firecracker going off. I got a puzzled look on my face – at least I bet that is what visitors passing by me must have thought. There should have been a larger explosion than that. But I didn't have any time to waste by going back inside to check it out. I had to get over to the rides to get my second bomb ready to detonate. The plan was to have it go off 15 minutes after the first one. I got there shortly, donned my MTCE shirt, and sneaked behind a trailer and switched my costume around.

Then I popped out and moved towards my target. As expected there was quite a lineup for the Ferris Wheel ride. Nobody was looking behind the ride where I was getting set up. I got out my electrical box bomb out of the plastic bag, and placed it down beside a steel barrier that was meant to keep people away from the electrical wires laying on the ground. I blended my bomb with the the other wires and electrical cords, got my ISIS flag in place, and finally set the timer for 40 seconds. I stepped away, and headed to one of the portable toilets to take off my 'costume' and stuff it down the toilet. That would leave me in my regular clothing and hair. To my dismay, all the toilets were occupied. And there wasn't even a garbage container that I could throw the outfit and plastic bag. I turned back to the

Story Time Continued....

Ferris Wheel, preparing for the coming blast that would topple the ride over, smashing into the crowd. It would be carnage and chaos. I smiled as I waited.

This costume disposal was my only glitch in the plan, but just a minor setback, I assured myself.

Then the bomb went off. Only it was only a little puff, like a firecracker – in fact it sounded just like the one that went off in the food building.

I was horrified. We had checked the bombs out many times, and tested them meticulously for flaws. These ones were identical to all the others that had successfully detonated at our training facility.

Then I saw two security guards heading my way. I was frozen to the spot. I didn't want to run.

That would alert them to me for sure. But I didn't want to stand still either, and have them arrest me without incident. I knew that I should begin walking towards them – meet them head on. Hopefully I could walk right by them without them knowing it was me they were after. However, before I could do anything, my worst fears were realized. Two cops had come up behind me, which I had not noticed, and grabbed my shirt collar. Before I could put up any kind of struggle, the rest of them reached me. They encircled me, and placed me

under arrest....and without incident, as they love to say in the news. What a coward I was, not to put up even a little bit of a fight! As this was happening, I began to wonder why the rest of the plan wasn't happening either.

There should have been gun shots going off, and screeching wheels as people were being mowed down back at the parking lot.

I have since learned that my 'team' were all undercover cops who had set up this sting operation. They were after Dr. Mohammedin. I was the only culprit. I feel like such a sucker.

But I can't wait to see my parents' faces when they finally get home tomorrow! That will be so amusing. I am so disillusioned at this moment, but I will recover and get my revenge on everyone. Just give me the time. Beware! Watch out!...

OPEN LETTER TO SALMON/LAKE TROUT MICHIPICOTEN BAY FISHERMEN I just came back (Friday August 25, 4 p.m.) from a walk on Driftwood Beach. My old legs told me that one third of the way down the beach was far enough.

I am absolutely amazed at the lack of litter so far this fishing season…. Well done! I DID pick up two partial lure plastic bags, a couple of bottle caps, one plastic rubber glove (some don’t like to touch a nice salmon?) an empty Danone fruit cup and one beer can, ONLY ONE!! There were also a few hand wipes that I left behind.

Also a large number of cigarette filters (they are synthetic and float after the paper and tobacco dissolve).

The point I wish to make is

that we are doing a good job taking home many things we used to throw out, but we still throw away bottle caps, Kleenex, hand wipes, cigarette butts, etc. We can put it ALL into a small container (tin can for example) and take it ALL home for proper disposal.

Just so you know, I really had to look hard for litter. Keep up the good work!

As an added note: there was a piece of a dinner plate that was thrown in the river at the Hudson Bay Post one or two hundred years ago. It took that long for it to be washed down the river and up onto the beach. Think about it…..

AITKENHEAD, Ronald "Archie", Ronald Aitkenhead, known to most as "Archie," passed away peacefully at home in Brighton, after a very long illness.

Beloved husband to Iris (nee Merke), caring father to Melody (Richard), Holly (Mark) and Kim (Scott), and very proud grandfather/papa to Joshua, Jordan, Kyle, Gavin, Sharon, Emily and Kate.

He will forever be remembered as one who put his family first and whom always entertained those around him with many stories. He travelled to exotic places in his early years when he served time in the Navy.

A welder by trade, as well, a volunteer firefighter with his two brothers (Jack & Norm) and a few years as a paramedic in Wawa, ON. In his late 40s, he had a life changing accident while working as a welder at Algoma Ore. With an early retirement, he spent his days fishing, playing card games with his family, and drinking a Tim’s coffee (just the way he liked it) while road tripping in his convertible with Iris at the wheel.

In memory, lift up your glass and toast - a husband, a dad, a grandpa, a papa, a brother, an uncle, and a friend - entertaining everyone with a tall tale. We will miss you. Rest In Peace.

SHESHEQUIN, Wilfred Henry, Passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer at the Lady Dunn Health Centre, Wawa on Friday August 24, 2018 at the age of 81 years.

He was born on September 21, 1936 in Missanabie where he remained a life long resident.

It was there he met his loving wife of 47 years, Alice, who stayed by his side all those years and was there to comfort him at the time of his passing.

Wilfred was an avid outdoorsman who grew up a hunter, trapper and fishing guide. After leaving the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1985, he chose to turn his love for the outdoors into a living. He purchased three small cabins on Dog Lake and built up a business that he worked hard at right up to his last days. His business provided a chance to meet people from all over Canada and the United States. Many good friendships resulted from those first meetings at the dock and they will surely miss all the good times together and his trademark sense of humour.

Wilfred was a loving son to the late William and Margaret (nee Isherhoff) Sheshequin. Brother to Sheila Caron (Claude), the late Mary Charette (late Roland) and the late Earl Quinn (late Catherine). Dear loving father of Charles (Cheryl) and the late Charlene. Special uncle to Charlotte (Travis), Judy (Mike) and proud great uncle to Arianna. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews as well as countless friends. At Wilfred’s request, no service will be held and interment of his ashes will be at the Slumberland Cemetery in Missanabie. The family would like to thank Doctors Cotterill and Woolner and a special thanks to the nursing staff of the Lady Dunn Health Centre, Wawa. News From The Park Michael Mantha MPP This week I attended the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference in Ottawa where I joined municipal leaders and delegations from across Ontario including several from communities in Algoma-Manitoulin.

The purpose of the AMO, which is comprised of almost all of Ontario’s 444 municipal governments, is to strengthen and enhance the effectiveness of municipal government in Ontario. At the conference I met with municipal leaders from our region as well as provincial government officials and ministers to discuss a multitude of needs and concerns that were shared. While I am in frequent contact with municipal leaders in AlgomaManitoulin, the conference provides an excellent forum to really focus on matters of importance and share ideas and approaches to improving the effectiveness of provincial/ municipal operations here in the North.

One subject we discussed involved concerns with impact the crushing cuts that the Ford Government’s policies will have upon the local governments, related service providers and agencies and, of course, Ontario citizens themselves. In the last six weeks we have only had a small taste of what Ontarians can expect in terms of policies and plans to reform social assistance and poverty in this province. What is desperately needed is a means to help people break the cycle of poverty so they can re-enter the workforce if possible and get their lives and that of their family’s back on track.

We are just a few weeks in to the new Conservative Governments mandate and already we have seen the start of broken promises in the form of cancelling the basic income pilot project we had in place.

The PCs have also reduced by half a planned increase to social assistance programs.

Prior to and throughout the election, all parties agreed to maintain this program.

Think of it like this. Social assistance benefits were scheduled to see a 3% increase until Doug Ford came to town. He cut that increase in half to just 1.5%. Now the thing is, the benefits were already so low that a 1.5% increase is so minimal that is actually meaningless. 1.5% of nothing leaves you with…well… nothing. Such an increase will not keep up with inflation or provide for even the most modest living standards. It’s just going to make it more difficult for people to make ends meet.

So, who is going to be left to pick up the pieces? Each community itself. The PC policies are going to put more and more pressure on our food banks who are going to see their regular clientele numbers climb.

This will unfortunately include not only young families who can’t find employment as well as seniors who worked hard to make this province what it is.

They certainly deserve better after a lifetime of hard work.

And when it turns cold they will see their energy costs skyrocket, forcing them to once again choose between paying rent, energy gills or buying food to eat.

Just recently NDP MPP Guy Bourgouin called on the Ford government to stop ignoring the needs of Northern families and invest in passenger transportation for Northern Ontario. Bourgouin said that disjointed bus services force some Northern families to travel for days to get to cities within only a few hours’ drive. Guy pointed out that one of his constituents told him that recent changes to bus routes means that it requires a 26-hour bus trip to get from Barrie to Kapuskasing. It now takes two days for those travelling from Sudbury – which only takes a six hour drive – because of a lack of coordination with transfers.

While Northern families are left struggling with fragmented bus services, the Ford government is making things even worse by refusing to restore

the Northlander passenger rail services, shuttered by the previous Liberal government. We just got the Ontario Northland bus service up and running to add to the services provided

by Greyhound when suddenly Greyhound service collapsed.

So Northerners are no better off than they were before.

Once again, the PCs continue to be oblivious to the needs of Northern Ontarians.

It is the same for the appeal for the Huron Central Rail line. So many companies and municipalities have lined up to show how vital the continued operation of this rail line is to the job security and the overall economy here in Northern Ontario. So far the PCs are turning their backs on Northerners in this region.

New Democrats are determined to prove to Doug Ford that there is a better way.

NDP MPP Gilles Bisson introduced the Fairness in Petroleum Products Pricing Act this month. This legislation would provide the Ontario Energy Board with teeth to regulate the retail price and wholesale mark-up of petroleum products in Ontario, thus protecting drivers from being gouged at the pump. The steep price fluctuations from day to day and between regions are frustrating and painful for drivers. The Ford government can put an immediate end to price gouging for millions of Ontario drivers and their families by supporting this bill. We must wait to see what happens on this.
