Celebrating Our Great "Great Trail" Article & photos by Barb Fisher Paddlers, non-paddlers and wannabe paddlers assembled last Saturday at dry dock Naturally Superior Adventures under sunny skies and calm waters to reenact in part a little bit of our maritime history.

The Trans Canada Trail construction began in 1992, Canada's 125th birthday and organizers were hoping to have the 24,000 km Great Trail completed by this year, Canada's 150th birthday, but many gaps remain. Patches of unsegregated road shoulders and gaps without shoulders must still be bridged.

But no matter, we are lucky folk here in our community where the water trail follows the Lake Superior shore for 1,000 km offering paddlers 16 access points between Gros Cap Marina Park close to the Soo, to Thunder Bay's Fisherman's Park. Where the Michipicoten and Magpie rivers meet and the river widens and curves to Lake Superior, paddlers experience the world's longest stretch of underdeveloped freshwater coastline. To the west lies Ontario's largest national park, Pukaskwa and to the south, one of the provinces

On Saturday, interested folk were invited by Brian Lachine, Rec & Tourism Co-ordinator with the Municipality to join all paddlers in a celebration of our beautiful watery section of the Great Trail. Almost 60 people gathered at Naturally Superior Adventures, located 10 minutes from Wawa on the shore of Lake Superior, and with life jackets securely fastened, cell phones secured, and novices like me with pant cuffs rolled up, selected which sea vehicle would best suit our capabilities. There were single person kayaks, multiperson canoes and kayaks, and as for me, I was first in queue to secure a seat on the voyageur canoe thinking there was safety in numbers. Twelve of us settled into the spacious hull, each with our own paddle that we were expected to man, accompanied with voyageur acoustic songs by Lindsay and Adrian Boal, and under the direction of our guide headed into the deep with a miriad of kayaks and canoes giving the Voyageur Canoe Paddlers the lead.

At our destination, Buck's Marina, some two or so nautical kilometres south, we embarked on terra firma to the welcoming cheering crowd on hand to join in with the "Ribbon Cutting" ceremony at the sight of the information kiosk at water's edge. Brian Lachine explained that the day's celebration was funded by a grant from the Federal Government, and he continued by conveying a message from Joanie McGuffin. Joanie together with her husband Gary are avid Lake Superior paddlers, hikers, authors, photographers, explorers and National Champions of The Great Trail, with Joanie being the Lake Superior Water Trail Coordinator and the

Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy Administrator.

Brian walked us through the messages conveyed on the three panelled information board describing our community's connection to the The Great Trail, safety information on travelling Lake Superior, and description of the shoreline and hiking trails. For the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, three different shaded blue ribbons were readied. Town Councillor Ivan Besner cut the first ribbon representing the link between water and land, Joel Cooper friend of the Trail cut the second ribbon which symbolized the link between the Lake Superior Water Trail as part of The Great Trail by Trans Canada Trail, and Marla Jones of the Municipality snipped the final ribbon symbolizing the link between The Great Trail's Lake Superior Water Trail as part of the international water trail circumnavigating Lake Superior, the largest in area freshwater lake on the planet.

It was time to return to Naturally Superior Adventures and we were all encouraged to switch up water vehicles to experience another new adventure...but I had my seat and paddle reserved on the large Voyageur canoe and that was all I could manage...today. The

interval had given Judy Page time to put the finishing touches on her meal advertised as a BBQ, but looked more like a spread for royalty. Absolutely yummy! After the meal, Lindsay and Adrian again picked up their guitars and continued in the voyageur mood ending the gala celebration with their songs of the sea.

Much thanks again to everyone involved in the celebration: Dave Wells, owner Naturally Superior Adventures, Brian Lachine Rec & Tourism Co-ordinator with the Municipality, Judy Page and her culinary assistants, Head Guide Jake O'Flaherty, and everyone assisting us all to navigate safely on the water. We are so lucky to live in the best corner of the world. Joie de Vivre!

News From The Park Michael Mantha MPP

Well folks, in the last few days I have found some parents looking longingly at the calendar and I know I hear faint whispers of, “Yes! We’re almost there…” You can see them tasting the anticipated freedom on their lips. We all know what freedom they are dreaming of. The kids head back to school in a few more days. Families get back into their comfortable routines. I know I am looking forward to getting back to tending to the business of helping Ontarians tackle the struggles we face daily as a province.

Speaking of school, it seems several report cards have been hitting the news for Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals. Recently Health Quality Ontario released figures that confirmed what thousands of Ontarians with first-hand experience have been saying all along -surgical wait times are far too long and, what’s worse, things seem to be continuing to go downhill instead of getting better.

My NDP colleague Peggy Sattler, MPP for London West, found out that the City of London has the longest surgical wait times in the province. It is more than obvious that Kathleen Wynne just doesn’t get it. She froze hospital budgets for years, and the funding she announced in the last budget to great fanfare doesn’t even keep up with inflation, much less make up for years of cuts. Wynne’s Liberals have done even more damage, freezing health care spending for years, and shortchanging hospitals by at least $300 million this year alone.

Our frontline care workers – doctors, nurses, and other professionals – are being asked to do more and more with less and less. Kathleen Wynne isn’t giving them the resources they need to provide care. As a result, patients are paying a very steep and painful price.

On August 16th in Kingston, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath released new information that shows chronic overcrowding and unfunded beds being operated at Kingston General Hospital. She has repeatedly called on Kathleen Wynne to undo the damage she has done to Ontario’s hospitals.

New Democrats say that when you or your loved ones are hurt, you should be able to get the help and care you need, when you need it most.

But that’s not what’s happening. All across Ontario people are seeing more and more examples of serious overcrowding.

Kathleen Wynne has turned her back on patients and the workers that treat them and save them. Wynne government cuts are pushing our hospitals

to the very edge. As a result, this dangerous overcrowding and hallway medicine have become the new normal. We have to change that.

Last week in Kenora, Andrea met face to face with physicians and frontline health care professionals to discuss the staff recruitment and retention crisis that is impacting facilities in northern communities like ours.

Our communities are facing huge recruitment and retention challenges because years of budget freezes and an ongoing lack of stable funding makes it impossible to offer permanent jobs for the health care professionals that our people need. Andrea said that this week’s meetings brought home the message that Kathleen Wynne’s cuts to Ontario’s hospital funding have left Northern hospitals in continual crisis mode.

The NDP is committed to properly funding Ontario hospitals. An NDP government will guarantee that hospital funding will always – at a minimum – keep up with inflation, population growth, and the unique health needs of our communities, each and every year.

In the Legislature we have been calling for a moratorium on layoffs of nurses and frontline care providers. Andrea Horwath has introduced our plan to create Ontario’s first universal pharmacare program. Providing drug coverage for everyone – regardless of age, income or health history – which will improve health outcomes, and reduce demand on emergency services.

An NDP government will work closely with health care professionals and experts to address the recruitment crisis and ensure strong, predictable hospital funding.

The time has come to do something about Ontario’s underfunded care system.

And I commit to you that New Democrats are ready to lead the way. New Democrats are proud to stand up as a voice with a conscience that cares for all Ontarians and we are committed to doing what is necessary put in place the health care and support systems that the people need.

Canada Should Do All We Can To Avoid Bitter Racial Politics

The car attack on counterprotesters at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, North Carolina highlights the rising temperature in race relations that is taking place south of the border.

The response from President Trump – assigning blame to both sides - did little to calm the situation. Instead, the President only ratchetted up the idea that America is increasingly divided on racial lines. There are those who say this could never happen in Canada, but we have to make sure we aren’t just telling ourselves what we want to hear if that is to be the case.

The longer term fallout from the President’s response has been more in line with the moderate reaction one might expect after an incident which took the life of one person and injured nineteen others. It took days, but the President finally condemned the coalition of white supremacists whose ‘protest’ sparked the attack. Gone from the Whitehouse is controversial ‘alt right’ figurehead, Steve Bannon whose presence on Trump’s campaign and role as advisor was seen as key to delivering racially charged support. But Bannon has gone right back to fomenting dissent on behalf of Trump through his Breitbart News Service and claims he will restore the Trump presidency which has been taken away from his followers – which include many white supremacists.

Here in Canada the alt right has its own news service, Rebel Media, headed by former Sun TV personality, Ezra Levant. Rebel had a journalist covering the rally in Charlottesville who seemed to be mocking the counter-protestors before the car attack took place. That action, coupled with a long history of interpreting news in a racially and religiously charged manner has cost the online media outlet dearly.

Sponsors have pulled ads, politicians that were friendly with the outlet are refusing to be interviewed, freelance journalists have publicly distanced themselves, and cofounder/radio personality, Brian Lily has walked away.

Whether the backlash will spell the end of the outlet is unknown, but a lot of editorial opinions were predicting just that over the last week.

Despite that, there is an appetite for the message Rebel was promoting and this is where Canadians have to be very careful about how we view ourselves. Many are not aware that there are approximately 100 white supremacist groups operating in Canada.

We are too quick to equate not having the degree of a racial problem as is found in the United States with not having a problem at all. The facts don’t bear this out and it doesn’t take much to pop the balloon – which is exactly how we must proceed if we are to build the Canada many of us like to believe exists already.

Consider the phenomenon of carding in Toronto. Here in the north it may seem unbelievable that people are stopped and asked to produce identification for no other reason than being out in public, but that is the reality that black men face in our biggest city. We have our share of attacks on religious minorities as well. Synagogues and mosques are targets as are individuals. Last winter a shooter killed six people in a Quebec City mosque. We can’t just sweep these events under the carpet and consider ourselves to be doing better than our American cousins.

We must confront and challenge ourselves to be what we think we are, or we will slip.

Perhaps the most disheartening aspect of the Charlottesville attack was the President’s response.

What has been uplifting is the overwhelming response of condemnation and dismay with the administration. The voices of moderates will have to remain strong to ensure that any gains are not lost to hate and fear. This is just as true in Canada as it is in the United States.

VIKING VOICES It is that time of year again and students are returning to school. Michipicoten High School’s first day of school looks a little different than in past years. Classes are scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 5th, 2017 at 8:55 a.m. Students will be notified where they are to report to when they arrive at school.

All students will rotate through all four periods.

Each period will be 33 minutes. During these periods students will fill out various forms, purchase locks if required, etc. and be welcomed back by their first semester teachers. Dismissal

will be at 11:30 a.m.

Students who need to make changes to their schedule need to return to the school in the afternoon to meet with staff.

The White River bus will depart at 11:30 a.m. Any students from White River will be able to make changes to their schedule on Wednesday, September 6th. All other buses will depart at 3:00 p.m.

Students are reminded to bring any required school materials as well as money for locks and gym uniforms.

MHS staff is looking forward to seeing everyone Tuesday morning.

Car Seats Save Lives Using the right child car seat is the best way to prevent serious injury or death to children in collisions. Make sure that your child is buckled up right, whether it is in an infant car seat, child car seat, booster seat or with the seatbelt.

Legislation makes it mandatory for anyone transporting children to make sure children are property secure.

This includes all caregivers, from babysitters to grandparents.

Infants: Under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, infants must use a rear-facing car seat until they weigh at least 9 kg (20 lb.).

Toddlers: Under the Highway Traffic Act, children must use a forward-facing child car seat when they weigh between 9 kg and 18 kg (20 to 40 lb.).

Superior East Opp Requesting Assistance In Locating Alberta Male (WAWA, ON) - The Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently seeking the assistance of the public in locating a male from Grand Prairie, Alberta. Police and family are concerned about the well-being of Rene SAVOIE. He is 41 years of age and was last seen travelling on Highway 17 near Wawa, Ontario on August 26, 2017.

SAVOIE is described as: • 5'10" • 135 lbs • Slim build • Brown and grey hair with a crew cut • Metis • Wearing green shorts and a grey t-shirt He could possibly be driving a black, 2002, two door, passenger vehicle with a tem-

porary Alberta licence plate and rear spoiler.

The OPP North East Region Criminal Investigation Unit has been assisting with the investigation.

Any person with information regarding this person is asked to immediately contact the Ontario Provincial Police, Superior East Detachment, Wawa office at 1-888-3101122.

Burlington Man Charged With Impaired (WAWA, ON) - On Sunday August 6, 2017, at approximately 6:40 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment received a traffic complaint in relation to a tractor trailer weaving all over the road on Highway 17 just South of White River Ontario.

The tractor trailer in question was located and stopped by police. Investigation revealed that the male driver's ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol.

As a result Bil ARKADIUSZ (45) of Burlington Ontario was arrested and charged with the following offences: • Adult Driving While Ability Impaired- motor vehicle (alcohol) contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC) • Adult Driving with More than 80mgs. Of Alcohol in Blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code CC The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa Ontario on September 11, 2017.

OPP Charge Local Woman (WAWA, ON) - On Tuesday August 8, 2017 at approximately 6:52 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) from the Superior East Wawa Detachment responded to an altercation that had taken place between a male and a female.

As a result of the investigation, a 28 year old Wawa, Ontario woman was arrested

and charged with the following offences: • Adult Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle Cause Bodily Harm contrary to section 249(3) of the Criminal Code (CC), and • Adult Driving While Under Suspension contrary to section 53 of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa, Ontario on September 11, 2017.

Traffic Stop Results In Drug Charges (WAWA, ON) - On Tuesday August 8, 2017 at approximately 10:10 a.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment had occasion to stop a motor vehicle on Highway 101 Caouette Township District of Sudbury for speeding. Investigation revealed that the driver was in possession of a quantity of marijuana, a quantity of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

As a result Robert Tyler COLLIN (19) of RaysideBalfour Ontario was arrested and charged with the following offences: • Adult Possession of a Schedule I SubstanceCocaine contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act, and • Adult Possession of a Schedule II substanceCannabis MarihuanaUnder 30 grams contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA, and • Adult Follow too closely contrary to section 158 of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Chapleau, Ontario on October 16, 2017.

Michipicoten Chronicles

Michipicoten Scenic Lookout Have you ever stopped and enjoyed the view from the scenic lookout over Michipicoten Bay on the road to Michipicoten Harbour?

From this high bluff, on a clear northern day, you can see the vast expanse of Lake Superior and the dramatic coastline of Michipicoten Bay. This is one of the only accessible lookouts with a fantastic view of pristine Lake Superior, mysterious Michipicoten Island, the lonely Michipicoten Lighthouse and the historical Michipicoten Harbour.

The Ojibway word Michipicoten (mish-eh-pehkaw-ten) is believed to translate into “high bluffs”, “place of large hills” or “landing place”.

Michipicoten was a traditional summer settlement site for the local Michipicoten Ojibway and their ancestors.

It is one of the oldest original place names on a map of Ontario.

Michipicoten Island is the second largest island on Lake Superior. Twenty-six kilometres (16 miles) wide and 10.5 kilometres (6.5 miles) long, the massive volcanic island is 72 kilometres (45 miles) from where you are standing. The islands unique ancient geology includes sea caves, agates, copper and amethyst and is said to be an island in a lake, on an island in a lake, on an island in Lake Superior.

For centuries, the local Michipicoten Ojibway people believed that Michipicoten Island was haunted. Early European’s recorded the legend which revolved around a fateful trip of four Michipicoten Ojibway who hunted and explored the land before becoming deathly ill and fleeing the evil island spirit. Only one managed to return to his village but soon died from a mysterious illness after recounting his horrific tale. It is possible that the ill-fated hunters accidentally poisoned themselves by using copper stones to heat their campfire meals.

Lake Superior’s first lighthouse was built on the island in 1872. An abandoned 19th century copper mine provid-

ed copper used to cover the roof of Canada’s Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Today the majority of the island is protected as a natural heritage park called Michipicoten Island Provincial Park.

It is home to three automated lighthouses, half a dozen shipwrecks, a healthy population of woodland caribou and a unique natural environment.

Michipicoten Lighthouse on Perkwakwia Point was constructed in 1902 as a result of increased commercial fishing activities and shipping traffic to Michipicoten Harbour.

This important safety beacon was the last manned lighthouse on the Canadian Lake Superior shipping route. It was automated in 1991.

nine square miles of the northeast corner of Michipicoten Bay. Much of the land you can see to your right was signed over by Chief Totomenai to Queen Victoria’s representative in 1850 in the Robinson-Superior Treaty.

Michipicoten First Nation is proud to be one of the first to negotiate a fair compensation for their disputed land issues.

Michipicoten Harbour and Oakes Cove are safely tucked into the north shore of Michipicoten Bay. Oakes Cove has been home to a commercial fishing industry since the 1870’s.

Michipicoten Harbour was the site of a bustling shipping industry dating back to the early 1880’s. Mormon contractors first utilized the harbour as a depot for off-loading men and supplies involved in the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The first ore docks and railway loading trestle were built in 1899 following the initiation of iron mining operations in Wawa.

The shipment of ore led to the birth of Algoma Central Railway and the Algoma Central Steamship Line.

During the 20th Century, Michipicoten Harbour was a vibrant community which included a school, Oakes Hotel, Summers General Store, post office, passenger steamers, pulpwood dock, staff houses for railway and logging company employees as well as a Canada Customs Duty officer. Michipicoten Harbour continues to be a one of the only deep water ports along the rugged east coast of Lake Superior.

A New Season Of Skating Is Fast Approaching!

The Wawa Figure Skating Club is gearing up for the 2017-2018 skating season and we can’t wait to see what our skaters will achieve this season!

Last year the club ran several different programs and trained skaters of many ages and abilities. From CanSkate, which is Skate Canada’s “learn to skate program”, all the way up to StarSkate which develops skating skills, ice dance, free skate and interpretive skating.

Last season our skaters attended competitions and seminars including two seminars that were hosted by our club here in Wawa. Our skaters also got to take part in some fun club events like the Halloween Bring a Friend and our Santa Skate before Christmas. StarSkaters travelled to Thunder Bay, Sault Ste Marie and Manitoulin Island for skating competitions. Our skaters showcased their talent and the skills learned over the year at our year end gala at which many skaters received special awards for their hard work.

The WFSC introduced two new programs last season that will be offered again this year. Come Skate With Me and PreStar. Come Skate With me gives pre-school first time skaters and a parent the chance to get on the ice together. Having a parent there to help their child as they learn to skate really helps to encourage children to feel comfortable on the ice. PreStar is a great transition program for our skaters who are ready to advance from CanSkate to StarSkate.

PreStar offers group lessons during StarSkate ice to build up the faster paced skating required for StarSkate. All of our programs encourage progression with regular evaluations and rewards.

The 'Herb' Garden

Rosemary and Redd Peppers lived in the village of Cloverdale.

They had dwelt in their house for thirty years, and raised two sons there.

It was the last house on a dead-end street that ended at the bush line of a mixed forest stand. The house was originally the homestead of a large tract of farmland that over time had been divided up into these lots where houses now stood. Their street was named Carraway Drive. Theirs was a two-story red brick house.

The driveway ran along the east side of the house, and went right up to their garage, which was situated past the house.

Both of them enjoyed gardening. Over the years they had created a beautifully landscaped front yard, with a great variety of plants and shrubs that combined into a solid mass of greenery and colour. In the centre was a huge old elm tree.

Their tulip and daffodil display each spring was the talk of the village. This continued throughout spring, summer and fall, where there was a constant change of blooms from their various plantings. They had mastered that art of timing blooms to come and go all season, so that it was a constant delight to the eyes. The flowers were her specialty. Everyone had to admit that she sure had a green thumb, as he did too.

His expertise was the lawn. He fertilized, seeded, watered, and pampered the front lawn, so it was always a lush green of solid grass. There were no dandelions, or other weeds that were able to penetrate his green carpet of lawn.

In the back yard they had a curved stone pathway that lead from the side of the garage over to a gazebo. Then between the gazebo and the garage they put up their hummingbird feeder and birdbath each spring. On the side of the garage they put up a swallow nest box.

Underneath that was their herb garden. That way Rosemary always had fresh herbs for any baking and other dishes that required them for flavouring.

Framing their property were a huge red maple, a blue spruce, a white birch, an oak, and a mountain ash, which the birds just loved once the berries came out. The trees offered a nice shade in the hot summer days, and generally just added that special finishing touch to the property, and delineated the boundary line of their property as well.

Behind the garage they planted a vegetable garden which stretched from the garage to the boundary of the woods. Of course, it was bountiful, thanks to his touch. He always had lots left over, which he gave out to the neighbours, and the local Food Bank.

Two years ago Heather and Ivan Cherryman, their next door neighbours, decided it was

time to downsize to a seniors' apartment in Oakvale, where they could be closer to their family and the medical facilities that Cloverdale just didn't have.

Rosemary and Redd regretted that they had decided to do this, as they were such good neighbours and friends too. But they did understood. They were all in their late seventies.

It was in the early spring when they finally moved out.

Surprisingly, it wasn't long after that they noticed that the house had been sold. One Saturday morning in early June, a convoy of half-ton trucks, and a couple of mini-vans came down the street, and pulled in. A couple of the trucks pulled up on the lawn, much to the horror of Rosemary and Redd. Heather and Ivan had always kept their lawn and property in immaculate shape. They competed every year in a friendly rivalry.

They began unloading their belongings.

Rosemary and Redd watched them off and on during the day.

There was lots of laughing, with lots of activity as boxes were unloaded and brought inside. There were also lots of cases of beer being carried in, as well as in hand, as the day progressed. About supper time, Redd decided to go over and introduce himself. He went over to a man who was leaning on the side of one of the trucks.

He looked like he might be the new owner. He said, "Hi, I'm Redd Pepper. Welcome to the neighbourhood.”

The other man then introduced himself as they shook hands, “Hi. Is that really your name? How bizarre is that? Sorry, it just struck me as funny.” Redd was caught off guard by this snide remark about his name. He had never had that thrown in his face before. He immediately judged that they were not going to get along. He went on. “Anyway I'm Ronald Cedarman. My wife, Laurel, is in the house somewhere. We have two teenagers, Oakley and Roseanne. I'm not sure where they are right now.

We are coming from Toronto to this quieter setting. Hope we haven't been too rowdy. I have some of my buddies from work helping me out. It saved us a lot of money by not having to hire a moving van. Do you want to come in for a beer? We have lots. We are having a barbecue soon. You are welcome to join us.”

He declined. “No, get settled in. My wife has supper nearly ready now. We can get together tomorrow, maybe, or next week some time.” He concurred, “Sure, you're right. It is a chaotic scene in the house right now. That being said, I guess that I better get back in and see how I can help. This was a nice break. So see you later then.” He raised his beer bottle in a salute as he headed inside.

Redd went back to his house.

Inside he commented to Rosemary, “Well, I don't think we are going to get along. I think he must be in his late thirties. He has a wife and two teenage kids. They were inside so I didn't meet them. But teenagers! This doesn't bode well either. I am a bit uneasy, for some reason. I don't know why. I guess it's because they are so much younger than us.

I suspect they will be noisier and less neighbourly. We were so spoiled with Heather and Ivan.” She agreed, but added: “Well, times do change.

Remember when we moved here how unhappy Heather and Ivan were. Then we were the younger newer couple, and they were the 'oldtimers'. And we had the two boys too. And look how well that all turned out. They became one of our best friends, and such wonderful neighbours. Well, there's not much we can do about it. We will certainly welcome them, and let's hope they become as good as neighbours as Heather and Ivan were.” He agreed, and that ended the conversation.

Over that year, they never developed that close relationship. They said hi if they ran into each other in the driveway, or in their abutting yards. It was in late summer when they noticed two worrisome things.

One was the deterioration of the yard. They never cut the lawn once. An old house trailer was parked on the lawn. That didn't improve things for the Pepper's. And that winter there was no snow shoveling done in the driveway – just the tire tracks, and a beaten path lead to the house where they walked in.

The second thing they noticed was how the amount of visitors increased. The visitors would come day or night, stay just a few moments, and were gone again. Laurel seemed to be there all day – apparently no day job, Redd noted.

Ron was gone for days on end sometimes. Maybe a sales rep of some kind and his territory kept him away so much, was Rosemary's 'two cents' worth on that subject. They thought the kids must have made lots of friends, as most afternoons and evenings, there was always some teenager popping in. They seemed to stay long enough that the Peppers' assumed that they were studying. They were never alone in the house without adult supervision, so there couldn't be too much mischief going on, they both agreed. They were wrong on all counts!

Anyway, this went on over the fall and winter. Then last spring, the Peppers' were surprised to see that they had put in a garden. It was planted away from their house, close to the bush. They thought that was strange, and a bit puzzled why they didn't clean up their front yard first. But it was none of their business, they commented. It flourished very well. It had an irrigation system and everything, the Peppers' marveled. They admired the mans' initiative.

One Saturday morning in early August, Redd saw Ron

out there cutting some of the plants down. He went over to ask about the garden. “Hi, Ron. Nice garden. It's doing really well. What is it that you have planted?” Ron hummed and hawed. Finally he said, “Ah, it's some herbs – mint, basil, that sort of thing. Laurel loves her herbs, so we are planting a lot.”

“Wow, that's wonderful.

Keep up the good work. That irrigation system must have cost you a fortune.” Ron merely uttered a curt 'yep'.

He left it at that, and went back to his house. He commented to Rosemary that there was something fishy going on next door. He explained about the herbs, and concluded that they didn't look like any he had seen before.

The next day, their oldest son, Dillan, happened to come over to pick up his Dad's lawnmover, as his had broken down.

The subject of that 'herb' garden came up. They went over to look at it. Dillan took one look, and told him that he was correct – those was not herbs. It was marijuana. A grow operation - Redd was shocked, and began to realize what all those visitors to the Cedarmans' was really about. He reported it to the police. They put the house under surveillance. They finally made their move in early October, and swept in, and arrested the four of them.

They began tearing up the crop.

Redd was standing in his driveway when they were being led away. He called out to Ron, “Some herb garden, wasn't it!

You didn't fool me for a minute.”

Ron retorted, “So, you were the one who ratted us out. You'll be sorry you did that. Next July this will all be legal, and you will have wasted your time causing trouble.” Redd laughed the threat off. Bad mistake, you think?

Two nights later, Rosemary had gone out to her church choir practice. When she got home, she found him dead in the garage. He had died from carbon monoxide poisoning, the coroner's report concluded.

A week later, their son Dillan returned the lawnmover to the garage. Then he went into the house to see his mother. He called out as he entered, and got no answer. He checked the main floor, and then went upstairs. She was not there either. Finally he went back to the kitchen, and was on the verge of opening the door to the basement when he realized it was already ajar. The light was also on. When the door was fully opened, he gasped as he saw her crumpled body at the bottom of the stairs. He rushed down, and picked up her arm, to see if there was a pulse. Their was none. He knew she was dead at least a day, he guessed.

He ran upstairs and called 911. The commotion began.

Of course planning for a second funeral in less than two weeks was difficult for him and his brother. He never gave any thought to their deaths, except they were terrible accidents.

The coroner also concurred that his mother's death was accidental. The police concluded the same.

However, Dillan found something in the house about a month after the funeral that caused him to think that maybe their deaths were not so accidental after all. In the telephone book in the hallway he found a scrap of paper inserted in the page where the police department's number was listed. It was dated a day after his Dad's death. It read: 'Must call police.

Dad says Ron threatened him the day he was arrested. He says it is just an idle threat.

What can he do in jail? I don't know.' “Oh, Mom why didn't you call?” he sighed, as a tear welled up.

Further investigation followed, and Ron Cedarman was arrested for second degree murder for both of them. His wife and kids were charged as accomplices, as well as growing and distribution of an illicit drug. Suddenly the evidence became overwhelming of their guilt, although mostly circumstantial. He was found guilty at his trial this spring. His sentence was reduced to manslaughter and sentenced to seven years in prison, with a chance for parole in three years. His wife and kids were given two years of probation. They returned to their home next to the Pepper's, out on bail awaiting their appeal of their convictions. The boys were furious with the light sentence, and galled at their nerve to return to taunt them.

The next day when they came to check on the house, they found the front window had been smashed with a brick, and the plants in the front garden had all been pulled up and left on the ground. They realized this would not stop, and likely would get worse. Reluctantly, they agreed to sell their parents' beautiful home where they had been brought up, and had so many wonderful memories.

They hated the thought that the Cedarman's had won.

Dillan asked me a couple of days ago if there was such a thing as 'justice' anymore, because it sure hasn't worked out that way! I am not at liberty to say what all we talked about. I sympathize with him.

I am also not able to say what I did to help get that conviction for Cedarman. Too bad about the wife and kids not getting a more deserved punishment.

I'm sorry that part didn't work out for now.. But it ain't over yet. Justice will come for the Peppers family, I assure you! …

Both their deaths really were accidental. Redd had been tinkering with the gas lawnmower, forgetting to open the garage door. The carbon monoxide did indeed overtake him. Rosemary had a heart attack as she was going down the stairs to the basement to take the clothes out of the dryer.

Increased Fines For Starting A Forest Fire

Ontario Strengthens Law To Deter Forest Fires Article by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry With forest fire season well underway in Ontario, the province has increased the maximum fines for individuals and corporations for starting forest fires.

If found responsible, individuals can now be fined up to $25,000 for starting a forest fire, with fines for corporations that start a forest fire going up to $500,000. These increased maximum fines will help deter human-started fires.

Approximately half of all forest fires are started by people. Forest fires can cause considerable risk to public safety, can cause expensive property damage and have broader impacts on commu-

nities and regional industry.

These fines only apply to forest fires inside the Fire Region.

Quick Facts • The Forest Fires Prevention Act only applies to the Fire Region identified in the act. This area excludes southern Ontario except for northern parts of Midhurst, Peterborough and Kemptville districts.

• Forest fire season lasts from April 1 to October 31.

• Last time the maximum forest fire related fines were updated was in 1968.

• Fire management in Ontario costs on average $130 million per year.

• These updated fines will bring Ontario in line with

other provincial jurisdictions.

How Others See Us

Article & photos by Karin Grundt My lawnmower was acting up, and my handy son number one (who can fix anything) took a look and diagnosed, “It needs a new spark plug” – and out he went to purchase one. When he returned, he had a big grin on his face.

“Mom, there is a red German “Feuer wehr” van in front of Canadian Tire, you should go and see it”.

I was puzzled about the German fire van here? Was he pulling my leg? “No, really! It has German license plates and emergency phone number 122 on it”, he assured me. Well, I had planned to go to the camp anyway, to return the washed bedding from my company the week before. I packed a sandwich, took my dog and was on my way to spend a leisurely day by the lake — but took a detour along Broadway Avenue and really! There was the red Feuer wehr van! Under the pumper it had written in sure German correctness; ‘service vehicle not in operation anymore’.

I couldn’t help it, I stopped right beside it, knocked on the side window and said in German, as a young smiling man rolled down the window: “what is the German Feuer wehr doing here in the middle of Canada?” (I assumed he spoke my language).

“We are travelling through Canada and beyond “, came his answer. “Winnipeg is our next stop”. I don’t recall exactly the impromptu conversation that followed, but just as many pleasant encounters in my life start spontaneously – so did this. He extended his hand through the window, my name is Konstantine and pointing to the back of his van, which was converted into a cozy living space, and this is my wife, Janneke.”

“I am Karin”, I said, “Are you on a strict schedule? Or can I invite you to my rustic cabin

by a lake to swim, and good conversation…?

Both agreed. Then I remembered I had nothing prepared for a meal. Only my sandwich… and it wasn’t enough for three…

I explained to both my problem-but as experienced travelers they were prepared.

I led them in the Feuer wehr halfway to my camp, parked it, and both with a small backpack joined me in my truck, navigating potholes and rough spots.

It turned out to be a wonderful day with glorious sunshine, nature pure and two very interesting smart strangers (no more). I can only repeat snippets of conversation, for example, how did the converted fire van came to Canada? By container, landed in Halifax. How long have you been married? Janneke looked at her watch-and after a long pause said, six weeks! We had a goodbye party arranged for friends and family: of course everybody was dressed casually, and then we surprised everyone by saying “We are getting married today!”

Lastly we talked about one of my dear to my heart subjects, “littering!” We did not want to elaborate on such a beautiful day about trash, so Konstantine promised to give me his opinion in writing later. Here’s what Janneke wrote in my logbook and what Konstantine thinks about our pristine country” “What a wonderful and welcome afternoon in the wilderness Konstantine and I were stealing the Wi-Fi from Canadian Tire when we heard an unexpected knock on our Feuer wehr van. “Who could this be?” we thought.

Fantastically Karin had tracked us down via her son and took us here-to the most glorious cabin in the woods for an afternoon of sunshine, lake and amazing white chocolate biscuits.

We’re only at the start of our trip but what brilliant memories to be making already!

Here is his response: A few words about litter…

being incredibly friendly and helpful. I have dreamt about coming to Canada for decades.

It’s been a childhood dream.

Now, this dream has finally come true. I’m currently driving across Canada with my wife as part of our bigger adventure of driving across the Americas. When we were planning this trip we always wanted to make the most of all the beautiful places we would visit. For us, that usually means outdoor activities.

So far we’ve been hiking, trail running and canoeing in various national and provincial parks, and most of the ideas I’ve had in my head about Canada have been confirmed.

It’s beautiful, it’s vast, it’s wild.

We have seen some incredible wildlife.

Only pristine it was not.

Even on the shore of the remotest lake we canoed to we stumbled across empty power bar wrappers. At the end of trails we ran we found empty beer cans. On rocks at the bottom of a waterfall in the middle of nowhere we found cigarette butts.

Wherever we can, we pick

up after other people. The outdoors (and any place really) are just nicer without the rubbish.

You’ve already carried in the full cans of beer and the power bars and the water bottles and the sandwiches. Now, refreshed and strengthened from your little snack, surely you have the energy to pick it all up and carry it out.

And then there’s the pit toilets. Both common sense and the signs on every toilet clearly state: please no rubbish, as it won’t decompose. We’ve even seen toilets where people had decided they didn’t like the smell of it, so they instead relieved themselves just outside. Such disrespect towards the park rangers who will have to clean it up is truly mindboggling.

If you look closely, you’ll find that the ditches lining the trans-Canadian highway are full of litter too. There’s lots of plastic bottles, some of them filled with the urine of truckers, we’ve seen diapers and even completely full garbage bags.

Of course, you’ll find rubbish wherever you go in the world. It just doesn’t fit my picture perfect images of Canada.
