11th Annual William G. Rose Memorial Golf Tournament JOBS INCLUDE:

On Friday, July 21st, 2017 one hundred and twenty-six golfers spent the day on the links in support of the 11th Annual William G. Rose Memorial Golf Tournament.

Teams were comprised of Men, Ladies, or Mixed with some participants travelling from Ottawa, Sudbury, Espanola, Sault Ste. Marie, and even North Carolina!

With our host Wawa Area Victim Services the sunny skies greeted the golfers supporting local High School bursaries geared toward Law Enforcement. Any additional funds assist future tournaments as well as Victim Services with local client programs.

A 2017 Chevrolet Cruze displayed on the course was provided by Mission Motors to a participant shooting a hole in one on #7. Mission Motors has supported the tournament tremendously for 11 years, and we are thankful for the oppor-

tunity afforded to the event.

In addition, each registrant had a chance to win one of 4 Golf and Gaming Packages provided by our friends at Bay Mills Resort & Casino. This trip included a one night stay for 2 at the Resort and 18 holes of golf on their Wild Bluff Championship Golf Course.

The staff at the Michipicoten Golf Club provided us with fantastic food and exceptional service throughout the day.

Michelle, Gail, Maria, Clarissa, Jana, and Jarrett from the clubhouse and Roly Lachapelle and his greens and grounds crew continue to do a fantastic job on Wawa’s little gem of a course in the North. Thank you to all!

OPP Charge Sudbury Man With Multiple Offences (WAWA, ON) - On Tuesday August 1st, 2017 at approximately 11:50 a.m. while on general patrol in the Town of Wawa, Ontario members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Detachment arrested a male wanted for multiple thefts from a local Wawa business. Investigation revealed that the male had attended the business on three separate occasions and taken numerous outdoor items. The male had also been involved in two separate driving complaints.

As a result, Marcel David GERARD, age 64, of Sudbury, Ontario was charged with the following offences: • Three counts of Adult Theft Under $5000 Shoplifting contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code (CC), • Two counts of Adult Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the CC, • Adult Flight while Pursued

by Peace Officer contrary to section 249.1(1) of the CC, and • Four counts of Adult Fail to Comply with Probation Order contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa, Ontario on October 16th, 2017.

Stolen Vehicle (GOULAIS TOWNSHIP, ON) - On August 2nd, 2017 Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a stolen vehicle. Sometime overnight between August 1st and August 2nd, 2017 suspect(s) unknown entered onto a property in the 1000 block of Old Highway 17 Road.

Suspect(s) stole a 1998 regular cab Dodge Ram pickup truck, brown (tan) in colour.

The pickup truck had an Ontario License plate number AJ83092.

Any person with information regarding the person(s) responsible for this crime should immediately contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or their nearest police authority.

Charges Laid After Altercation (BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION, ON) - On July 30th, 2017 at approximately 1:58 a.m. officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police

(OPP) with the assistance of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) were dispatched to a residence on the Batchewana First Nation in response to the report of an altercation between several persons known to each other.

A female victim received serious physical injuries as a result of the altercation and required medical treatment.

As a result of police investigation a 33 year old male from Batchewana First Nation was arrested and charged with: • Assault Causing Bodily Harm contrary to section 267 (b) Criminal Code (CC) • Assault contrary to section 266 CC • Fail To Comply With Conditions of Undertaking contrary to section 145(5.1) CC The accused was held in custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on August 2, 2017.

Human Remains Found -UPDATE #1 (WAWA, ON) - On July 30th, 2017 at approximately 5:00 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) members of the Superior East Wawa Detachment were notified of found human remains in the Lake Superior Provincial Park area south of the Municipality of Wawa.

Superior East OPP members, with the assistance of Sault Ste. Marie Forensic Identification Service, Sault Ste. Marie OPP Crime Unit, Emergency Response Team and the Unmanned Aerial System, are continuing this investigation under the direction of Major Case Manager Detective Inspector Rob Matthews, OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service are also engaged in this investigation and have deployed a Forensic Anthropologist to assist.

There are no further details at this time as the investigation is ongoing.

-UPDATE On July 30th, 2017 at approximately 5:00 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment were notified of found human remains. The Superior East OPP began an investigation under the direction of Inspector Rob Matthews with the assistance of the Sault Ste. Marie OPP Forensic Identification Service, Sault Ste. Marie Crime Unit, members of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), the Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) and the office of the Chief Coroner. The Ontario Forensic Pathology will also be attending the scene today to assist with the investigation.

There are no further details at this time as the investigation is ongoing.

OPP Investigate Fatality Bicyclist Struck By Motor Vehicle -UPDATE #1 (WAWA, ON) - On July 28th, 2017 at approximately 3:00 p.m., members from the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), together with Algoma Emergency Services (EMS) responded to a serious collision involving a bicycle and a motor vehicle. The collision took place at the intersection of Main St. and Broadway Ave. in the Town of Wawa. Deceased is 53 year old Nicole SPENCER of Wawa.

The driver, 85 year old Anne HICKS of Wawa, has been charged with Careless Driving contrary to Section 130 of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

She is scheduled to appear in Provincial Offences Court in Wawa on September 21st, 2017.

Male Charged With Sexual Assault (JOHNSON TOWNSHIP, ON) - On July 27th, 2017, shortly before 1:00 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a sexual assault that had just occurred in the Town of Desbarats.

Investigation determined that a 26 year old female was sexually assaulted by a male known to her.

As a result of the investigation, a 59 year old male, from Desbarats, Ontario, was charged with: Sexual Assault, contrary to section 271 of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on July 31st, 2017.

Male Smoking Marihuana On The Street Arrested (BRUCE MINES, ON)- On July 29th, 2017, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol in the Town of Bruce Mines.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m., police observed a male walking on the sidewalk carrying an open container of liquor and smoking a cannabis marihuana cigarette.

Police spoke with the male who advised he had a valid prescription for marihuana. The male was unable to produce the prescription.

A police query revealed the male was bound by a Recognizance and was on conditions not to possess or consume any unlawful drugs except with a valid prescription.

As result of the investigation, Michael LIVESEY, 56 years of age, from Barrie, Ontario, was charged with: • Fail to Comply with Recognizance, contrary

to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code; and with • Possession of a Schedule II Substance- Cannabis Marihuana-Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The accused is schedule to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on October 5, 2017.

Male Charged With Impaired (TARBUTT-TARBUTT ADDITIONAL TOWNSHIP, ON)- On July 30th, 2017, shortly after 6:00 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint involving a possible impaired driver on Highway 17 near the Town of Thessalon.

Police located the vehicle travelling westbound on Government Road in the Tarbutt-Tarbutt Additional Township. Police activated the cruiser emergency lights and vehicle turned into a private driveway. The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a field of tall grass. The male driver was located and while speaking with him, the officer determined the driver had been consuming alcohol.

As a result of the investigation, Roddy RYDALL, 34 years age from Desbarats, Ontario, was charged with: • Driving While Ability Impaired- Motor Vehicle (Alcohol), contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); • Care or Control Over 80 milligrams, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the CC; • Operate a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act; • Use Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle, contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); • Fail to Apply for Permit on Becoming Owner, contrary to section 11(2) of the HTA; and with • Driving Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on August 8th, 2017.

Articel by Barb Fisher John Muirhead and Jesse Bydevaate, known as Bare Sierra are currently travelling northern Ontario on their Northern Lights Tour and after performances at Live From the Rock Festival at Red Rock they will be performing their brand of musical entertainment at Rock Island Lodge, not far from Wawa on August 15th.

These talented young men from Halton Hills, Ontario have been jamming together since the age of 14 and take their music very seriously as a lifelong commitment. They are both enrolled in music programs at university and college and are working on their first cd to be released in the fall. Their brand of music is designed to encourage audience participation promising every show as being a small-town Ontario campfire experience that everyone is invited to join. Their bass

and acoustic guitars backing up vocals draws the audience into their world of roots, rock and upbeat sing-along choruses. The group is influenced by the classics: Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Frank Turner and Bruce Springsteen combining with the more modern sounds of City & Colour and Kings of Leon; something for every age.

Be sure to mark August 15 as a music night not to be missed. Bare Sierra will have you stomping your feet, singing along and forgetting your troubles. It all happens at nearby Rock Island Lodge whereby the Lodge offers several of these musical evenings over the summer months, charging a nominal cover charge and a donation to the food bank if desired.

We Celebrate In August But Civic Pride Is An Everyday Thing Whether you take part in public celebrations connected to the Civic Holiday or enjoy the time in another way it is a good thing that we take a day to recognize what could be our most important level of organization. There is no doubt about the prominent roles played by provincial and federal governments, but the work done at the municipal level may have the most bearing on our day to day lives.

Not all of that work is official either and the importance of neighbours and volunteers deserves our gratitude and recognition as we celebrate ourselves on this holiday.

It’s clear that when most people think about the Civic Holiday, they are not thinking about the day to day organization of our communities. There’s no doubt that work is important, but people naturally think about how the bonds that create neighbours and those we are closest to deserve to be celebrated. While these connections might not be the stuff of sensational news reports, they are how we show each other our very best. That creates positivity and goodwill, which can often seem in short supply as we go about our busy lives.

Here in the North, where a sparse population and greater distances create a dynamic our city counterparts never have to overcome, it can be argued our communities are more closely knit. There might not be as much going on as there is in big cities, but there may also be greater participation rates in community-themed events because of that. We are easily more regionally defined and see our communities as something that exists across municipal borders. That could be why so many of us travel to nearby events. We are good neighbours in that respect.

If there is one notion that deserves a place of prominence among our Civic Holiday celebrations it is that of good neighbours. That itself is the bread and butter of successful communities. People who are engaged, thoughtful, and give of themselves create better communities in ways that no official effort could even come close to achieving. Most of us know someone who goes about making other people’s days better just by being a good neighbour. There is no blueprint to follow to do this, but it seems that a positive attitude can be infectious and some people are blessed with that in abundance.

Volunteerism is another way that our communities come together and should be celebrated. Many of our

communities do just that and I have been to volunteer appreciation events all over Algoma-ManitoulinKapuskasing. Still, the Civic Holiday is an opportunity for more of us to see how volunteer organizations, individuals, and service groups do so much to make our communities better places. This is all the more important as government budgets become stretched year after year. If it weren’t for volunteers picking up the slack our communities could easily be far less vibrant and vital. We should always take the opportunity to thank our volunteers for what they do and the Civic Holiday is an opportunity to do just that.

However you choose to mark this holiday, I hope that you are able to count your blessings and to recognize that we are privileged to live in vibrant communities located in a beautiful part of the world.

I wish everyone the very best for a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Michipicoten Chronicles

Wawa’s Prisoner Of War History From 1939 to 1945, the Second World War touched every corner of the World, including Wawa. Hundreds of German airmen spent time in remote bush camps located throughout the Wawa and White River regions.

A severe labour shortage in the forestry industry and increased demand for wood fuel, pulpwood and lumber led to the placement of German P.O. W.’s into bush camps run by companies like Abitibi Pulp & Paper and Northern Paper Company.

Consisting mostly of airmen shot down over England, the P.O.W.’s lived in separate bunkhouses, had their own cook and maintained their own tools. They each had to cut approximately ¾ of a cord per day or 5 cords a week. They received a credit of $.50/day. Once their quota was met, they were allowed to spend their leisure time at will as long as they did not leave Abitibi property.

These bush camps were not heavily guarded. Normally only a few guards would be assigned to 90 prisoners all of whom signed up for this work voluntarily. Leisure time was spent fishing or pursuing hobbies like carving or creating crafts out of wood or scrap found around the camp. Wawa residents remember German P.O.W.’s in Michipicoten Harbour. Some P.O.W.’s were also known to wander into town from the Wawa train station at the end

of Station Road, to sell or trade items like hand carved combs or ships in bottles.

P.O.W.’s could always be identified by their grey clothing with a 12 inch red circle on the back. Smaller red circles were also located on the outside of both knees and a red stripe on their caps. Camps were normally accessed along the Algoma Central Railway line and the Magpie and Michipicoten Rivers. Some of the larger lakes in the region were also home to these short lived seasonal operations.

By 1945, Canada was home to over 38,000 German P.O.W.’s. By December 1946, all the P.O.W.’s were repatriated to their homeland, despite the fact that some of them did not wish to leave Canada.

The bush camps may have provided a meagre living in today’s terms, but coming from war torn Europe, these temporary residents were guaranteed food, shelter and a decent wage for an honest day’s work.

It was not uncommon for ex-P.O.W.’s to return to Canada to live the rest of their lives near some of the small northern communities where they were detained.

Only a few people remember the location of these shortlived operations. Many of the camps are now overgrown and provide few clues to their important place in the wartime history books.

Dangers Of Blueberry Picking “The blueberries are ready!”

Maria called out to her husband, Antonio. She got the word from her best friend, Cordelia, who had already been checking out the patches.

Maria always looked forward to August. She loved blueberries in any way she could use them.

Of course, she put the freshly picked ones on her cereal in the morning, in pancakes, pies, muffins, wine, and jam. Then she would work on filling up their freezer. So she needed to pick lots of berries to do all of those things. Fortunately for her, she didn't mind picking them, despite being up there in years, as was Antonio.. He did not pick berries. He did eat them though. He didn't mind drinking the homemade wine either. His knees and back gave him lots of trouble, and picking blueberries was just too physically difficult to do, according to him. But it really was that he was just plain lazy.

Anyway, he would drive her out to the patch of the day, and wait in the car, doing a crossword puzzle, smoking, or napping until she had a basket full. He would then come over and pick it up, and take it back to the car. Then he would settle in again until she had her next basket full. This was the routine that they had done for many years. It worked out fine for both of them.

However, on this particular day, Tuesday, August 8, 2017 the routine was changed. That turned out to be pretty much a bad thing. They went to a spot about twenty kilometers out of town. Cordelia told her the berries were ahead of schedule this year, as normally this particular patch was not ready for picking until later in August.

There were lots of berries right now, but they should get out right away before others found out about it too. So that is where they went. Once off the highway they went along an old bush road that lead to the hydro lines. It made for a wide open area where indeed the berries were plentiful .

It was a hot and sunny day.

They had gone out the previous evening, and the black flies were ferocious. So this day they decided to go out around one in the afternoon. It was a tough decision – avoid the bugs, or swelter in the heat.

They decided to go with the heat. They brought lots of water, and wore light clothing and wide-brimmed hats, all in an effort to handle the heat.

They did put in the bug spray, in case they had to use it. But on this day, they did not need it.

The picking began. It indeed was a good spot this year, as it wasn't too long before Maria had filled 2 baskets. Antonio picked them up and put them in the back of their hatchback car. It was hot inside the car, so he left the back hatch open,

to get some air inside. He didn't want the berries to get too warm. With the door up, it cast a bit of shade, so he got out his crossword puzzle book and set up his lawn chair underneath. He had his bottled water beside him too. He was all settled in.

Maria had moved to a patch near the tree line, and found a group of bushes, all loaded with blueberries. She smiled in delight. She took a moment to 'sample' a few berries. She sighed, and uttered a 'yum', before starting the job at hand.

She sat down on the ground and made herself comfortable, as she began stripping the bushes.

She had filled her fourth basket to about half full, when she had the sense of someone behind her. She first thought it was Antonio coming to pick up the full baskets. To her shock, when she turned her head to face the sound, she found herself staring into the body of a huge black bear. It was merrily helping himself to the berries in her third full basket which she had set aside a few meters away from where she was currently picking.

She screamed, and struggled to get to her feet to run away.

That startled the bear, and it lifted its' head out of her basket, and shifted his body towards her, snorting really heavily.

Maria forgot all about picking berries, and the number one rule – don't run away from a bear encounter. However, fortunately for her, it was more interested in the berries. It let out one more snort, before turning back to its' meal.

Antonio heard her screaming, and hustled over towards her. She finally met him about half way between the bush, and where their car was parked.

She grabbed onto him, and panted out the word 'bear'.

She pointed towards where the encounter took place. He patted her on the shoulder, trying to calm her down. He headed towards where she was pointing. Once she realized what he was doing, she called out to him to get back to the car. “Don't go there. Please, let's just go home. I'm too scared to do any more picking.

C'mon, Tony, let's go.' Her pleading had no effect on him.

He called back to her, “Don't worry. I just want to see if it's still there. I can scare it away, or at least retrieve the baskets.

You can go back to the car, or come with me, whichever you want. I won't take any chances.

Don't worry. I just want to check it out.”

She hesitated, torn as to which way to go. She decided to go with him. She knew she would feel safer with him than wondering what was happening while she waited in the car. She caught up to him, but stayed behind him. She kept muttering “Be careful. It's over

that way, I think. Oh, I'm all turned around now. I'm not sure where I was picking.” He kept working his way towards the bush where she thought she had been. They were both surprised to realize how far she had wandered away from the car this time. Then off in the distance, about 300 metres away, they saw the bear still sitting on its' haunches, munching away. Antonio started moving towards it, yelling and waving his arms, hoping to scare it away. At first, it had no effect.

However, as he got closer, the bear looked up. It raised itself onto its' back feet, stretching high, sniffing the air. That caused Antonio and Maria to stop dead in their tracks. It stood so tall, and they realized how big it really was, and not to be trifled with. It dropped back to the ground, and went back to eating the blueberries.

They stood there in the middle of the field, wondering what to do next. Maria said, “Let's go.

We don't want to tangle with that bear. Let him have the berries. We already have two baskets. That's pretty good for today, anyway.” Antonio replied, “Yeah, you're right.

But there are still 2 baskets there. I don't want to leave them behind.” She tried to stop him, but he charged ahead. As he got closer, the bear looked up, and this time backed away, and finally turned and ran into the bush. Antonio rushed over and grabbed the nearly full basket that the bear had mushed down, and her half full one that she had been filling up. He handed them to her, as he picked up the two full untouched baskets. They both looked furtively around, as they headed back to their car. The bear never came back out, to their relief.

Their relief was short-lived, however. As they got to the dirt road they became confused.

He commented, “Now where is the car? I parked it right here. I'm sure this is the spot.”

She countered. “No, I think it was further up the road, wasn't it?” They both looked around, and walked up and down the road, trying to get oriented.

He finally found the spot where the car had been parked. He knew this was it, as he saw his footprints in the sandy roadway as he had crossed over to go to her assistance. He then noticed the tire tracks, as their car had obviously been turned around, and headed back to the main road.

Maria asked him, “How could this happen? You didn't leave the keys in the ignition, did you?” He was both angry and embarrassed, as he realized that indeed he had done just that. He admitted to her, “Well, yeah, I guess I did. I had turned on the radio to get some music. That happened just at the same time as I heard you screaming. Damn!”

“Now what do we do? Are there any other pickers out here that we can get help from?” That got him to thinking. He didn't answer her right away. He was trying to remember if any other vehicles had passed him. It came to him in a

flash that a blue half-ton truck had slowly passed him, with a couple looking over at him, just as he heard her screams.

He turned his attention to her question. “Yes, I was just remembering one truck that past me. I'm going to walk up the road to see if they have stopped.” “I'm coming with you,” she stated. So they laid their baskets on the ground at the edge of the road, and began walking. It soon became clear that the truck was not anywhere nearby.

Finally Antonio stopped and declared, “It's no use going any further this way. They obviously are gone. It must have been them that stole our car on their way out. Well, we're going to have to walk back to the main road, and let's hope we can get a ride into town.”

So they began their trek.

Once they reached the highway, they soon were able to flag a car down. It turned out to be their neighbours, Brian and Maureen Berry. They told them what had happened, and that they needed to get to the police to report their car being stolen. To their surprise, about five kilometres towards town, they saw their car parked on the side of the road, along with the blue truck. Lo and behold, the brazen thieves were trying to sell their blueberries! Brian called the police on his cell phone. They pulled up behind the parked car. They got out, and pretended to be interested in buying the berries. It was a stall tactic, of course, until the police could get there. Shortly, they arrived on the scene.

It turned out that the two men had escaped from the jail in town just a while ago.

They had been arrested the day before, for armed robbery at the convenience store in town.

They had prior convictions for the same crime in several other locations in the province.

A bulletin was issued was to be on the lookout for a stolen blue truck, the very one Antonio had seen pass him.

It had been on the radio, but he never heard it. The report went on to advise everyone that there were two escaped convicts in that truck, and they should be considered armed and dangerous, and if spotted to not approach them, but call police immediately.

As the lone officer ordered them to put their hands behind their backs, so he could cuff them, they bolted. To the horror of these poor bystanders, the officer pulled his pistol out of his holster, and fired a warning shot over the fleeing convicts. One tried to get into the passenger side of the stolen truck, while the other headed for the driver's side.

The officer fired a second shot at the driver. Just before he got to open the door, he was hit in the leg, and he dropped to the ground, wreathing in pain, and yelling out police brutality.

The other guy just stood by the passenger door and put his hands up, and yelled for him not to shoot. That ended the skirmish. The officer called for an ambulance, and then cuffed the other convict, and put him

in the cruiser. The cowering bystanders slowly poked their heads up from behind the police cruiser, terrified at what had happened. This was not what they had expected.

All this for a couple of baskets of blueberries, Maria declared.

These are cursed berries, to be sure, she moaned.

The officer apologized profusely for what happened, and asked them if they were alright.

The four of them assured him that they were fine, but just a bit shook up, they admitted. “Wait 'til I tell the guys at the Legion tonight about this.

They won't believe it!” Maria flicked her hand at him, and snorted a dismissive gesture.

Brian and Maureen chuckled nervously.

After the police interrogation at the station, the uninjured convict explained that they were hoping to get a bit of quick cash by selling the blueberries in order to buy some food and gas for the truck, as they didn't have any on themselves, due to just breaking out of jail. He went on to explain that they didn't dare try to use the debit or credit cards that they found in the car here locally. He then outlined the rest of their plan. They wanted to split up and go their separate ways. They realized they had the perfect chance to get their two vehicles when they came across the Ambrosians' car on that dirt road. They had originally came upon this road to hide away for a while, until nightfall.

So it was blueberries that were their downfall, and Maria and Antonio's good luck.

Those berries never tasted so good that evening, despite all the trouble they had getting them. Maria forgot about her comment of the berries being cursed that she had said earlier at the takedown. So what started out as a bad day turned out okay by the end of it. Today, Wednesday, August 9th they are out picking blueberries again, only in a different location this time. Even though there were still lots of berries at yesterday's patch to be picked, they both agreed they were not in the frame of mind to go back there again, at least for now.

Anyway this time Antonio did not leave their car unattended for a moment! He made sure he locked it up as he went with Maria to keep guard for bears. He even picked some berries himself, much to Maria's surprise. They kept close to the road too, so he didn't have far to go to take each full basket back to the car.

He even had a whistle to help scare off any bears that they might encounter while picking their 'blue gold'.

Normally they preferred it when they were alone while they picked berries, but this day they were glad to see another couple picking further down the road. That gave them a bit more comfort . They wanted no more repeats of yesterday, and it did indeed turn out okay, and they had a good haul too.

• Must be alert, able to maintain high degree of mental concentration, with visual and hearing ability to recognize traffic at a safe distance.

• Ability to walk pedestrians safely across busy intersections, and react safely and quickly to traffic conditions.

• Must be able to display a school crossing stop sign in an upright position so that it is visible to vehicular traffic approaching from each direction, and extend the other arm out parallel for one minute on a frequent basis.

• Physically fit, with the ability to perform all physical requirements of the activities.

WORKING CONDITIONS: • Must be able to perform duties outdoors in all diverse weather conditions.
