"Coffee & Culture" At The Library Features Glenn Gould is available for loan from the library, and even if the name Glenn Gould does not resonate with you at the moment, be sure to check out the collection. Our community's connection to Glenn Gould is just another wordly phenomenon that folk from Wawa can boast about, and gain a little appreciation of what we sometimes take for granted. Much thanks to Joanna Rowe who keeps us abreast of Wawa's
Article & photo by Barb Fisher Librarian Colleen Abbott and staff are launching a community awareness program at our library and last Tuesday evening the "Coffee & Culture" event historian Johanna Rowe led us in a celebration of the life and times of musician extraordinaire Glenn Gould and his connection to Wawa. Glenn Gould, one of the best known classical pianists in the 20th century was known as many things: concert pianist, writer and CBC broadcaster. Born in Toronto he packed much talent into his 50 years, dying suddenly in 1982. He was born with an uncanny musical gift, having perfect pitch at the age of three and taking an active part with the Toronto Symhony Orchestra at the age of 10 interpreting classical music in his own way. He attributed much of his personal strength as having being drawn from his frequent visits to our Lake Superior shores, "an extraordinary place" and the area he went to for his artistic refuge. Gould stated that if he were any key, he'd be f-minor, because "it's rather dour, halfway between complex and stable". As in many gifted artists, he experienced many eccentricities in his persona
and by getting away from the stresses of big city life he found much solace in the wilderness of Wawa and our rugged surroundings. Gould believed that people from small towns such as Wawa are inspired to set aside all the silly superficial notions that governs life in the city. He truly believed that this life afforded a much better, tighter, closer perspective of what people are doing, what they want to do, what they can do, and what their potentialities are. Gould often stayed at the Wawa Motor Inn regularly in the 60's and 70's, and became known as the "strange bird" holed up in room 102. Often he could be seen wandering around the Magpie High Falls area, Michipicoten harbour, Sandy Beach and Lake Superior shores. Here he found freedom to be able to think and write clearly and get in touch with his creative imagination in great solitude. In the classical music circles Glenn Gould's name is an icon worldwide and visitors to our town from
Europe and Asia often wish to be directed to the landmarks that have become synonymous with Gould's notoriety. At the library Colleen was very excited to showcase the prized collection of books written on the life and times of Glenn Gould, video tapes, audio cassettes and music recorded on CD's which has been recently gifted to our library from Mary Jo Watts. Mary Jo is an American follower who through a Gould chat forum had been in contact with our Joanna Rowe. When Mary Jo decided to downsize her collection, well where better to donate the gift but the place that Gould loved so much, Wawa, with the terms being that the public would have free access to the treasures. The collection
history and culture as she shares her fascinating stories to everyone including the culturally challenged. Also thanks to Colleen Abbott and her staff for keeping our library events current and appealing to every age and discriminating tastes. Check out the Wawa History website wawahistory.wawa.cc and if you are social media challenged, just come down to the library to explore everything it has to offer.
