Hockey Player Of The Week - Aiden Laing

article by Barb Fisher, photos supplied Aiden Laing wearing sweater #6 plays for our Bantam Travellers in the forward position and has returned from a short sabbatical from hockey as he found that being part of Wawa's minor hockey family, well there's no life like it.

He is a grade nine student at Ecole St. Joseph and although hockey is a big part of his life, he doesn't follow the NHL teams but keeps busy with other activities that promote a well rounded future, like joining his family at camp, driving his dirt bike, flips on the trampoline and other activities that northern lads do at camp. And I will leave the thought at that!

With Aiden's love of family time, it brings me to another aspect of hockey life, families juggling their busy lives to provide every opportunity for their children. Aiden's mom Tracy and dad Trevor demonstrate extraordinary time management skills with Tracy juggling her full time teaching career and Trevor managing the various family businesses and still making time to enjoy the activities of their four youngsters. Their eldest is off to college, and

Talus and Quinn join Aiden in the minor hockey experience necessitating the family to manage school activities, several weekly hockey practices, and transportation to out-oftown games and tournaments.

My hat is tipped to all busy families.

This past weekend at the Silver Stick tournament in Sudbury our Atoms and Peewees both clinched second place making us all proud on and off the ice. It is a glowing testimonial to the dedication of our coaching staff, families and fans in that our small town with a population of 2800 can compete evenly matched against the much larger cities of Sudbury, Soo, North Bay, Barrie and West Nippissing.

Silver was the colour of their medals, but as ambassadors of

our community, golden.

Looking forward to the next hockey experience, this coming Friday December 8th, our Midget Legionnaires head to Timmins to compete in the Smiling M tournament. On Saturday December 9 our Bantams compete at home versus Kapuskasing Ice Hawks at 2:30 and 5:30 at the Community Centre and Sunday our Atoms meet the Chapleau Huskies 12:00 and 2:30. Make sure you come down to the arena to cheer them on. There will be many travel weary folk attending and win or lose, a filled stand and lots of cheering make it all worthwhile. And parents remember there is life after hockey....it's called grandparenting hockey!

Introducing the 2017 Wish Upon a Star Campaign Making Dreams Come True The 2017 Wish Campaign has commenced with the Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation undertaking to raise funds for the following equipment for the local hospital: • the purchase of two IV pumps ($13 000) and • an ECG machine ($15 000) to be used throughout your hospital, and • a freezer ($9 000) for Lab Services.

These vital pieces of equipment will help the hospital to realize its Vision “Excellent health care for every one, every day.”

For every gift made to the 2017 Wish Upon a Star campaign, a star will be displayed on the Foundation Wish Tree in your name or in memory of a loved one. You can also fill out a star in person at the Lady Dunn Health Centre.

This Month In The Money Matters!

The theme for November’s programs was Rotary Foundation – the Rotary organization through which funds are made available for some local, international and global projects. John Morrison and Mark Owen gave us a review on just how money is given to Rotary Foundation and then accessed by various Rotary Clubs around the world. So just how does the Rotary Club of Wawa get and ultimately spend the money it raises?

There is an old saying ‘charity begins at home’ and the Rotary Club of Wawa takes this saying into account when planning on how we spend the money we raise. But we also believe that ‘a portion can flow out into the district and ultimately into the world.

First things first – where does all of our funding come from?

The first and primary source is through the sale of Nevada tickets at Mac’s store. The funds received through this are strongly regulated and can only be given to local organizations that have been approved by the municipality. Most are given to organizations that benefit children – schools, sport teams, for example. In addition, we are able to give funds that benefit the community through health care, social programs – Wawa Food Bank and Iris’ Place, literacy programs and so on. We are also able to use some for our Youth Exchange Outbound and Rebound Program. (For a more comprehensive list speak to any member of the Rotary Club.)

To access the funds a letter must be written by the organization to the Wawa Rotary Club with a description of how the money will be used.

Another source of funds is through the various fundraising activities we undertake.

This includes such activities as the Radio Auction, the sale of Christmas Nuts, and the Gourmet Meal Raffle . This allows us to give money to organizations or individuals that are not necessarily approved under the Nevada Tickets sales and it also allows us to keep a small portion to go to the administrative costs

of running the club.

Rotary members are also encouraged to give a minimum of $ 120.00 per member to the Rotary Foundation annually. If money donated by the club reaches this goal we become eligible to access money through the matching grants program. In a nutshell, when a club contributes this $120.00 / member it is pooled with all the other funds given by all the other clubs and goes into an investment account where it remains for three years. The interest from this ‘account’ is used for administrative purposes, and after three years the principal is released and is available for access by individual clubs or by groups of clubs for particular projects. A great example of this is the recent approval of Project Lifesaver for a matching grant. The Rotary Club of Wawa and its’ members had given an average of $120 / member to the Foundation in the 2016 – 2017 year. Our club donated $ 3,000.00 to Project Lifesaver and accessed the matching grant of $ 3,000. The amount provided to The Alzheimer’s project was in excess of approximately $ 6,000.00.

We can also join forces with other clubs within or outside of our own District 6290. We may wish to partner with Rotary clubs in other countries to provide funds for a self-sustaining project in another part of the world. For instance, a number of years ago, working in conjunction with clubs from Australia and Zambia, funds were provided for composting toilets and water wells in a community in Zambia. (Where Courtney Clarke had been a Rotary Exchange student.)

You might be interested to know that funds raised by the Wawa Rotary Club are not used for the benefit of the members. If you see us holding a social event, or eating at a meeting, you can be assured that the money come directly from the members – either directly paying for the meal, or by paying ‘fines’ or through the Happy/Sad bucks program and meeting dues and other internal fundrais-

ing endeavours.

What a delightful option for stocking stuffers this year!

The cost of the tickets are $ 20.00 each and the winner gets to choose a dinner for eight. There are three menu choices plus a vegetarian option for one or more of the guests. Watch for our posters for more information. The date for the dinner is May 12th at Rock Island Lodge.

• February - Winter Carnival Rotary Exposition Rotary is planning on hosting the Winter Carnival Exposition again this year. I think this will be a biannual event. Letters will be going out to various companies/ organizations in the community asking for their participation. If you don’t get one and want to put in a display please contact one of your local Rotarians and they will make sure you get an invitation! If your organization has been assisted by Rotary in the past we encourage you to participate and let our community know how helpful our organization has been to yours.

After School Programs We have started the after school programs. On Tuesday, we have Craft Club, Wednesday is Clay Club, Thursday is Cartoon Club, and Friday is Game Day. All clubs are 3:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 4-12 and anyone under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult. Come on down to the Wawa Public Library and participate in our after school programs.

Drop Box We are now operating with our new drop box in place. You may deposit your returns only in the drop box when the library is closed.

Used Battery Collection Computer Cartridge Recycling We are a collection site for single use batteries, computer cartridges and toners. You can drop them off at the circulation desk at the Wawa Public Library.

The library is closed Sundays, Mondays and all holidays. We are open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.; Friday 11:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Saturday from noon until 2:00 p.m.

Christmas Hours This year, the library is open until Friday, December 22nd inclusive, closed from December 23-27 inclusive, open Thursday, December 28th & Friday, December 29th from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., closed December 30th -January 2nd inclusive.

Re-open Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018 for regular hours.

Parents, don't forget to bring the kids in for a library scavenger hunt, Christmas music and apple cider on December 28th & 29th.

remembers good curling and great memories, particularly of Gil Matte, Irene Honstein and Win Mills performing their hilarious skits at the ladies bonspiels.

The Michipicoten Golf Club was constructed in the 1960s with volunteer labour.

After working for a certain number of hours you worked off the $125.00 price of one share. Jerry drove a truck, hauling stones that had been picked by the volunteers.

Others hauled and burned brush, raked fairways, etc.

One of Jerry and Ann's favourite memories is of the 1966 July 1st parade at the time of the opening of the local radio station CJIC. Fred Zimmerman, the station's manager, organized the parade while Jerry helped with the floats, and John Rhodes MPP was in attendance. There was the added thrill of seeing their daughter Lauren crowned as Queen that year. They recalled with pleasure being down on the Wawa Lake beach during Homecoming Week in the 1950s, with steak-on-a-bun in hand, watching Bart Kraan parachute over the lake from a plane piloted by Nestor Erechook.

There were New Year's parties at the Lakeview Hotel, the Union Hall and the Legion, and one year the Frank Guzzo band from the Sault came to play. The Winter Carnival was a fun time each winter and Ann recalled the costume parties at the New Era Motel with some amusement.

Ann and Jerry have four daughters and a son, with one daughter Maureen living in Wawa while Peter moved to the Sault in 1998 when the mine closed down. The others are spread out with Lauren in Alberta, Jean in Quebec, and Muriel in Guelph.

Jerry was a pitcher for the baseball team from the Sinter plant and played defence in hockey, later becoming a playing coach with the Iron Men hockey team.

Jerry was a member of the Michipicoten Volunteer Fire Department from 1958 to 1975 and in those early days the Fire Department looked after the ambulance service.

There were approximately 20 men on the roster at that time under Fire Chief Les Weeks.

The Legion was very active in the community with lots of children's activities, and Track and Field days for the schools along with Public Speaking contests. Jerry enjoyed being Parachuter Bart Kraan in Nestor Erechok's plane during the Service Officer from Homecoming Week celebrations c. 1950's

Kids Can Cook Graduates From Wawa To Waterloo In A Cardboard Boat Both teams from École Saint-Joseph (Wawa) made their mark during the regional Cardboard Boat Race competition in Thunday Bay on November 22-23. The secondary school team, made up of Démily Thibodeau-Bello, Patrick Chevrier, Aiden Laing and Kalev Trudeau won gold

and qualified to compete at the provincial competition in Waterloo in March.

The team distinguished themselves by their capacity to build a quick and sturdy cardboard boat. Their vessel navigated a distance of 25 meters in 17.12 seconds and carried a load of 280

kilograms. The Cardboard Boat Race competition, organized by Skills Canada, is set to continue next week in Espanola where several other Conseils scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario schools will be vying for their spot at the provincial competition.

On behalf of Superior Children’s Centre, and partnering agency, The United Way we would like to present the latest graduates from the Kids Can Cook program that has just finished.

The Kids Can Cook program is an opportunity for children ages 7 – 12 to learn about safety in the kitchen,

food handling, cleanliness, identifying culinary tools as well as cooking simple recipes together that families can afford and enjoy! In some cases, community kitchen participation may enhance coping skills and provide valuable social support.

So the incident ended, to the disappointment of one neighbour in particular. He was chortling away at their scuffle, as he peeked out through his front window curtains. He had a good view of it all from there. That was Mr. John Bethleheme, a miserable old man who lived alone across from the Shepherds. Definitely a descendant of Scrooge. He just loved causing trouble. He didn't like the Mangers' decorating tastes any better than the Shepherds'. They were such snobs, he felt – always with the 'hoitie-toitie' airs. He saw a chance to get the neighbours feuding again, so in the middle of the night he crept over to the Manger's place, and dragged the nativity scene, the snowman blowup & the star projector next door to the Shepherds, where he smashed the pieces up.

The spruce tree lights were tricky, as he got himself entangled as he tried to uncoil them. Once he got them off, he put them with the rest of the items, along with the other set of lights that Joseph had laid on the ground before going uptown on Saturday afternoon. He had seen them leave and took the opportunity to steal them. He took them over to his place until he was ready to remove the rest during the night. He just regretted that he wasn't able to pull the speakers and the eaves trough lights off too. He had hoped that would be enough for now. If this didn't stop the noise and displays, he would come up with another plan at that time, he commented to himself, as he scampered back to his own home...

Now that he saw that the fun was over for this morning, he moved away from the window, and went into the kitchen to have his breakfast. He was surprised to hear a knock at the front door about nine that morning. When he opened the door, he was greeted by Mary Manger standing there. He noted with lust her nice figure, accentuated by her tight-fitting dressy royal blue jacket and navy dress pants.

She began, “Good morning, Mr. Bethleheme. I apologize for disturbing you so early in the morning, but I imagine you saw the scuffle my husband and Adam Shepherd had this morning. It was over our missing and now destroyed Christmas displays we set up just this past weekend. I am surveying the neighbours to see if anyone saw who did this despicable act of vandalism. Did you by any chance see anything?”

He replied in his most concerned voice. “No, Mary I didn't.

Sorry. My bedroom is in the back of the house, so I wouldn't have seen or heard anything. I went to bed about ten last night, and didn't get up til just a few minutes ago. I am just making my breakfast now.

Would you like to come in for a cup of coffee? By the way, you look very sexy in your coat and slacks.” He licked his lips in a salacious manner and grinned. She was startled at the way he looked at her like that, and felt very uneasy.

She tersely said, "No, I must get going. I have a couple other places to canvass. Then I have to get to work. Thanks, anyway.” She quickly turned and went down the steps. He leered after her, as she headed next door. “Good luck with your survey, Mary,” he said in his most syrupy voice. When he closed the door, he chortled away at the encounter and headed to the living room, and got out his Playboy magazine to 'read ' while he ate his breakfast.

On Monday, December 4th, Joseph was charged with assault and battery, just as Adam had warned. Adam, in turn, was charged with theft under $1000, mischief, and assault. On Tuesday

John Bethleheme was charged with theft, unlawful destruction of property. It seems that one of the other neighbours, Miss Noella Stable, another senior who lived next door to him, came forth this morning to report that she had seen him hauling the things over to the Shepherd's place. She explained that she had to get up during the night for her nightly trip to the bathroom, and she looked out her kitchen window, as she always does before going back to bed. That was when she saw him doing it. That was enough to get the charges against Joseph and Adam dropped.

You know I believe we have 2 early Christmas miracles. Both Joseph and Adam are not by nature violent people. Having been charged with assault especially ashamed them both. Monday night after supper, Joseph made the first move, thanks to Mary's firm persuasion. He went next door and knocked on the door. At first Adam was on high alert, wary of what Joseph was going to do this time. He was surprised and relieved when Joseph apologized for his actions. He asked Adam and Eve to come over for dessert and make peace. Eve accepted the offer before he could say no.

So they came over, and after a bit of awkwardness at first, they soon warmed up to each other, and discovered they had more in common than they realized. A new friendship had been born. So there was one miracle.

There was a second miracle that came out of this altercation among neighbours. John Bethleheme's son Peter dropped in unexpectedly. They had been estranged for over five years. He had left the house as a teenager after having a fight with his father.

You see, I am a friend of Peter's, and have kept in touch with him all these years. I called him up on Tuesday after hearing about his father's criminal charges, and suggested he come home right away.

I knew that John missed him a lot. He regretted the split, and wished he could have apologized to him. I know Peter also regretted his actions of hastily moving out.

But both didn't want to make the first move. To my relief he came.

He arrived about noon today, that is Wednesday, December 6th.

Peter called me tonight, and told me that he had reconciled, and both had made peace. He added that he was actually going to come home for Christmas, and bring his wife, Ruth, and their son Mark.

John didn't even know he was a grandfather. It's too bad Elizabeth Bethleheme wasn't around to see this. However, she had passed away shortly after Peter had left home.

John claimed it was a broken heart, but the autopsy listed it as just a heart attack. Anyway, I say it is another miracle. Further to that, Peter also informed me that Joseph and Adam had gone to the authorities today, and pleaded their case that all charges be dropped against his father, and they agreed.

It looks like it is going to be a Merry Christmas 'in the neighbourhood', to quote Mr. Rogers from the old TV program that I used to watch when I was a kid.

The nativity scene did re-appear, thanks to the Shepherds'. The blow-up snowman has gone back to the store. Joseph has agreed to stop the outside music, and there are no blinking lights on the eaves.

The lights are re-wrapped around the spruce tree but don't blink either anymore. The star projector is lighting up the front of the house though. Will miracles ever cease! I hope not. (Joshua White, a neighbour, 3 doors down from the Mangers')

Job Description The Trust Administrator is responsible for providing financial, administrative and clerical services to the Board in order to ensure the effective and efficient daily operation of the Michipicoten First Nation Community Trust.

Responsibilities 1. Provide administrative support to ensure that Trust operations are maintained in an effective, up to date and accurate manner: • Answer general telephone inquiries in a professional & courteous manner • Reply to membership inquiries with accurate information • Type correspondence, reports & other documents • Maintain office files • Open & distribute mail • Prepare & distribute quarterly newsletters • Maintain membership database • Keep website up-to-date • Order supplies as needed • Maintain daily bookkeeping and journal entries using Simply Accounting • Check GIC’s and make sure members are getting their monies on time and reinvesting ones that have matured • Year end preparation for audit

Seniors At Risk Committee Presents: Charity Scams Take Advantage Of Your Generosity And Kindness you will give money to.

Make sure it is an organization you know and trust.

Locally you might decide that your money will go to the Wawa Hamper Fund or the Food Bank. Perhaps you like to give to the Salvation Army or purchase gifts through World Vision. Support the groups you wish to support through a cheque that you either hand deliver or mail to an address that you know is correct. Do not let other groups guilt you into giving more than you had planned.

3. If you decide that you might like to give some money to another charity give yourself the time to check out their legitimacy. Any person acting on behalf of a genuine charity will be happy to provide you with information and give you time to verify it. Get the Registration Number and access the Canada Revenue Agency database to check on the legitimacy of the charity.

In your Google search bar just type in ‘List of Charities – Canada.ca’ and select one of the entries. Do not let someone bully you into giving right away. If they are genuine they will wait.

4. If you are called on the telephone do not give out your personal information, credit card information or banking information. Get a phone number where you can call them back, if they

As we head into Christmas Season, the season of joyous giving, scammers are out there just waiting to tap into some of that generosity.

They may pretend to be a real charity and will contact you personally – on the street, by knocking on your door, over the telephone and always through the internet via email, or Facebook. Or, pn the street they may have collection boxes that look legitimate or mimic well-known charities’ logos. They may knock on your door and ask for money for the latest disaster, or for a Christmas fund that sounds like a good cause.

We are a generous people and we like to help others, but make sure that you are not just helping others into your wallet. What are some of the things you can do?

How to protect yourself: 1. Limit the amount of money that you put into the collection boxes, at least with these ones you are only going to lose what you put in the box, if they aren’t legitimate 2. Decide well ahead of time which organizations

will give it to you. Look up the name of the organization and see if the telephone number matches. Call the real number and ask if they are conducting a money raising campaign and if the number you have received is legitimate. There is nothing wrong with hanging up on someone.

All you have to say is ‘I’m not interested’ and hang up the phone. You didn’t solicit the call so it isn’t rude.

5. If you are contacted via email or through an online message, delete it without opening it if you don’t recognize the sender. If the sender seems legitimate click on the name of the sender and check if the email address is the one that you are familiar with. If it isn’t – delete it. Again, do not provide any personal, credit card or banking details. You are not under any obligation to give funds to anyone just because they ask.

6. If you do provide credit information to an organization and then begin to wonder if they were legitimate contact your credit card company right away and explain the situation. They may assist you in making sure that your losses are minimal.
