Fine Art, Music & Fractured Fairy Tales
Article & photos by Barb Fisher "Wawa's Got Talent!" Last Wednesday evening Masters of Ceremony Aidan Jackson and Kiara Kiddle opened the wonderful evening of music, skits and fractured fairy tales in the Michipicoten High School auditorium showcasing our homegrown acting and musical talent. The grade 9 music class, led by Ms. Valois have been working exceptionally hard to feel confident in performing to an audience with only two months' experience in playing their instruments together; a very impressive accomplishment. Their first piece "Chant for Percussion," as the name suggests featured the percussion section of the group consisting of Kayley Desrochers and Hunter Maj. A clarinet trio next took the stage with Dexter Dawson, Trenton Gunner and Makayla Fletcher playing "Skip It Lou," an American folk song. Later in the musical line-up, grade 9 student Kiara Kiddle soloed with "You and I" accompanied on the piano by her music instructor Lindsay Boal. Grade 10/11 showcased their talent performing "Frenzy", an exciting piece with simple rhythms and flowing melodies, featuring Makayla Fletcher on clarinet and Kathleen Johnson on the flute. The next piece "Heroes and Glory" paying tribute to everyday heroes in our lives, highlighted Nash Lewis on tenor saxophone and Tyler Krell on trombone. The audience was also treated to five short arrangements by the Grade 10/11 music class:
"Theme from Symphony #1," "Lullabye," "Theme from Symphony #9," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Can Can." Rounding out the musical talent, Sidney Smith sang "Terrible Things" accompanying herself on the piano, and Makenah Dumont performed a piano solo "River Flows in You." Under the instruction of Mme. Poisson, Makenah has had seven years of piano lessons and will be completing work for her grade 7 exam this year. Well done performances from our community's abundance of musical talent. Interspersed throughout the musical numbers, students showed off their acting talents in several pantomines - Fractured Fairy Tales. St. Joseph French Immersion students fractured a well known fairy tale with their hilarious take on "The Spoon and the Dish that Didn't Come Back and Everyone has to Find Them." That's quite the mouthful and the actors' unique interpretation of an old favourite kept the audience thoroughly entertained. High school students acted
out a new twist on the "sleeping princess" and the comical efforts of her prince to wake her up. In Sir James Dunn students' modernized version of Hansel and Gretel, Master of Ceremonies Aidan warned the audience not to use chirping, tweeting, beeping electronics or flash photography as the monster is sensitive to bright lights. He alerted everyone that in the event of a Big Bad Wolf attack, to please exit the building calmly, keeping in mind that the actors are not professionals and to refrain from throwing sharp, pointy or hard objects onto the stage. The wicked witch was quite the hit with her quips drawing Hawk Junction and Dubreuilville into her patter, and Pauline and Natalie added to the hilarity with their skit "If you give a mouse a cookie." Three "Minute to Win It" segments involved the audience and after a little coaxing, the participants did very well in their impromptu debuts. The first mission objective was for the contestants to slide a cookie from their
forehead into their mouth using facial muscles only - no hands. Participants, student Goldilocks was joined with Momma Bear and Baby Bear from the audience - mom Tracy and son. And I must say Tracy, it is evident that you are from a large family as you moved that cookie with lightening speed and scored before the others got started! The second segment of "Minute to Win It" featured Jack and Jill, students Ellie and Alana pitted against mum and dad combo from the audience, Sherry and hubby. Their assignment was to stack cans using a straw between their teeth. It was evident that Sherry had done this before. She and hubby easily took the prize. The final segment included two teachers, the giants pitted against young student Maya, whereby their instructions were to suck up M&M's with a straw, crawl under a table and drop the candies into a cup. And the prize went to Maya, the smallest, most agile who didn't get stuck under the table and most importantly, the only contestant not to cheat. For the past several years our Rotary Club has been contributing to helping the rescue efforts in earthquake stricken Haiti. Wawa's Paulette Albert has been involved for many years leading missions to Haiti with local citizens including a group of students

to assist in the development of a safe haven for young orphaned and abandoned Haitian children. All entry fees and proceeds from this entertaining evening will go toward the "Wawa for Haiti" fund. Under the direction of Mrs. Jozin Grade 9,10 and 11 art classes offered great art for sale with proceeds going to aid in the cause, and for viewing, but not for sale was a display of the kids' final art projects. Wow, so much talent in our community. Also to raise funds, one could buy a delectible sweet from the bake sale table and make a bid on an art work in the silent auction. Congratulations to all winners and thank you everyone for supporting this great cause.
