A Valentine's Day Ode To True Love = A Fictional Poem

by Jim White I saw this poem pinned to the refrigerator that my brother Steve wrote for his wife, Sylvia on Feb. 14/00. Me and my wife were over for supper on the 15th. I went to get out the wine and saw it. After reading it, I had to scowl and commented to myself how sappy it was. But this was their first year of marriage, and I am happy to see they are still in love.

Anyway, here it is for everyone else to read. I know he will kill me for this, but hey, brothers do this sort of thing all the time, don't they?

I know I must give much praise to Cupid, For without his help, I would be so stupid: It is February, and it’s Valentine’s Day, And I just want to say, I really love my sweetheart, and for my part, I made great plans for her, right from my heartFirst up, I made her favourite breakfast treat Waffles, berries, whipped cream, coffee - can't be beat!

Served to her on a tray with a rose and candles litAnd that, to my relief, was a real big hit.

Then spent the morning in our big poster bed, As we both donned an attire of silky red During which time we did frolic and play Until we were ready for a rest, I'll say.

Next for her a nice light lunch near noon; With some soft music so the mood we won’t ruin.

Then came our afternoon delight a romantic movie felt just right: “Ghost” - our favourite one of all.

Guaranteed to make us bawl.

First we turned the lights all off, so, It left just the movie to cast a glow.

After which we did cuddle, and moreUntil it was nearly four!

Then came the evening – we dressed in our bestShe in her hot red dress; me in suit, red tie, and vest.

We went to the fanciest restaurant in town.

It is called the 'Anchor & Crown'.

Our reservation was for eightOur cozy candle-lit corner was great.

We dined and danced ‘til midnight, Before we headed home, and to my delight, We still were in the mood for one more embraceAnd our passion arose far more than on our face...

Finally with one long kiss, we slowly made our way to bed, Confirmed to still be in love, from that very day we wed.

this area. Some of the employees who drove our vehicles were Richard Katzenback, Uncle Peter Boychuk, Alex Murray, Al Randall and Orville Linington. Orville was a faithful employee who drove a taxi, then was part of the bus service. Alex Murray hauled groceries with the pickup truck, and drove one of the tank trucks. Uncle Peter drove the bus. Uncle Peter Boychuk was my mother’s brother. He operated a body shop on Mackey Street, the same location used by the Pelletier’s now. He is buried in Selkirk, Manitoba.

The Two Cities depot on Bay Street near the ferry dock sold us one of their limousines capable of holding 18 passengers and we brought freight from the Sault. Hauling the freight along with the mailbag from Algoma Ore was our main source of revenue. We had Louise Lipsett as our main bookkeeper/secretary. She worked for Stan Napier at the mine cookery, and we also had Jean Campbell and Patsy Slack working with us at one time.

When we applied to the authorities for permission to provide bus service between Wawa and the Sault, the Greyhound Bus people object-

Richard Katzenbach & Danny Biluk ed and we had to attend a hearing on the matter at Osgoode Hall in Toronto. We were supported by Eric Munro, Al Turcott and Stan Napier, while there were six representatives from Greyhound. Because of the distance the two judges gave judgment the same day, and they ruled in favour of our application.

The taxi stand was on Ontario Street. There were half a dozen bachelors living there, driving the cabs--Jimmy Bouillion, Leigh Coop, Buddy Penno. Dick Burry’s mother Laura cooked for them, also Nona Scott did some cooking.

We built the fleet up to twelve taxis and sold the taxis to each driver.

Both my daughters Julie and Dianne, born in Wawa, graduated as Engineers from the University of Waterloo.

Julie acquired her Mechanical Engineer’s degree in 1983, and now lives in Edmonton, while Dianne graduated in 1985 as a Chemical Engineer, and lives in Brockville. They come back to the Catfish cottage every summer.

Wawa has been good to me and, having watched the town grow to what it is today, it will always be a part of me.

This Month In The

The theme for January’s programs was Vocational Service – what are some of the occupations that people do in our community – is there anything out of the ordinary? Interesting?

Bev Boyd did a presentation on her attempts to become a wedding officiant and how she went on line and now has a certificate from the American Marriage Ministry that supposedly allows her to conduct wedding ceremonies – sounds rather sketchy – but apparently she would be able to conduct marriages in Michigan with that certificate. There are also a number of quasi-religious organizations that state that if you join them you will be able to conduct weddings. Hmm – sounds way to easy! Update – she is now in contact with Ontario’s Registrar to find out just what she would have to do to become a wedding officiant in Ontario.

We were also very pleased to have Christy Reid of the Alzheimer’s Society to come and give us an update on the Project Lifesaver. As presented in earlier articles Project Lifesaver is a program through which persons with various forms of dementia or other maladies that may put them at risk for wandering can be found. It involves the using of a radio transmitting device (a bracelet worn by the person) and a receiver (monitored by trained Ontario Provincial Police).

The Alzheimer Society in conjunction with the Senior’s at Risk Committee and the Ontario Provinicial Police have been working to bring this program to Wawa. With donations from various organizations the funds necessary were raised and it is hoped that the program will be fully operational by April 1 of this year. Please contact the Alzheimer Society for more information.

Matt Larrett, along with two of his students from MHS attended a meeting to demonstrate the Vex Robotics robot built and operated by Matt’s team of students. I was astounded to hear how the students build, program and operate the robot. They will be attending a competition in the near future. Would

Wawa Family Health Team's 2018 Women's Gala Proceeds Donated To The LDHC Foundation

you like to have a look at this remarkable task? The team will have a display at the Rotary Exposition as part of the Wawa Winter Carnival on Sunday, February 18th between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. at Michipicoten High School.

We are expecting to have just over 30 hallway displays at the Exposition and four demonstrations taking place in the gymnasium. The demonstrations include Archery, Karate, Dance and the OPP Canine Unit. The Exposition was well received two years ago and I think will be every bit as informative and exciting as it was two year’s ago.

Many of the displays entered are from organizations that Rotary has assisted in one way or another over the past few years. As a Rotarian I am very proud of the work that we do and the Exposition is an opportunity for us to share with our community information on that work!

The Rotary Club is also hosting the Pancake Breakfasts during the carnival weekend. So drop by the Community Centre between 8:00 and 11:00 on Saturday February 17th and Sunday February 18th for pancakes and sausage!

Perhaps after eating the pancakes and seeing the Exposition you might decide that Rotary is something you would like to join. Talk to any Rotarian or call John at (705) 856-2118 or Mark at (705) 856-7319.

Some of the things that are coming soon: Gourmet Dinner Ticket Sales: Just a reminder to get your tickets to the Gourment Dinner. The cost of the tickets are $ 20.00 each and the winner gets to choose a dinner for eight. There are three menu choices plus a vegetarian option for one or more of the guests. Watch for our posters for more information.

The date for the dinner is May 12th at Rock Island Lodge.

Radio Auction: Rotary members will be in contact with businesses and groups looking for donations for the Radio Auction starting in a few weeks time. Keep an eye out for our Radio Auction booklet to see just what you might wish to bid on!

The Wawa Family Health Team staff proudly present a cheque for $1,730.00 to LDHC Foundation Chair.

The Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation is pleased to announce that net proceeds from the 2018 Women’s Gala “Wiggle & Jiggle” held on January 26, 2018 was generously donated to the Foundation. The healthy donation of $1,730.00 will go towards the current campaign of raising funds for the purchase of two IV pumps ($13,000) andan ECG machine ($15,000) to be used throughout the hospital.

Funds to purchase a freezer ($9,000) for Lab Services have been raised since the current campaign began in

early December 2017.

Since the Women’s Gala began in 2014, a total of over $8,700.00 has been raised and donated to the Foundation.

Thank you to the Wawa Family Health Team for your tremendous support and for hosting such an enjoyable and educational evening for the ladies.

A presentation about the most southerly population of woodland caribou in the world, centered on Lake Superior islands, will be held at 7 p.m. on February 21st in the Terrace Bay Recreation Centre. Everyone is welcome.

There is no charge.

Michipicoten First Nation’s Lands and Resources Consultation Coordinator Leo Lepiano will provide historical and current information about population and

range, as well as about recent efforts to assist Lake Superior caribou. An overview of the Lake Superior Action and Management Plan and environmental funding sources will also be presented.

St. Joseph’s School Happenings

Legion News It looks like winter is on it’s way out but we can still get some nasty days.

At the Legion hall they had a successful “Chase the winter Blues away” event and the silent auction had over 70 attending and bidding on the 91 items which were donated by local businesses and individuals from Wawa and Sault Ste. Marie. Thank You so much!

Three young girls from the Defined Movement Dance Group served the crowd some delicious hors d’oeuvres as well as tea and coffee. They did a wonderful job and the special beverages were very much appreciated It was a successful evening. We could not have done it without some great volunteers. The whole town pulled together on this one.

Our Annual Public speaking event will be on February 21st. We should have about 25 speakers from our local schools. Come and hear our future leaders speak.

Everyone welcome. Contest starts at 6:00 p.m.

Visite d’un écrivain OFIP French Club St. Joseph French Immersion Catholic school runs on a balanced day of half English instruction and half French instruction. This 50/50 model allows students to gain confidence in both English and French languages. St. Joseph French Immersion offers an after school French club that is free to the students and runs twice a week after school. This amazing opportunity is funded by the Ontario Focused Intervention Partnership (OFIP). The program is a key strategy intended to encourage and support student achievement. Students at St. Joseph French Immersion are very enthusiastic about the French Club and created these posters as a response to “Pourquoi apprendre le francais?” They then dia-

Visite d’un ours et d’un bison Pendant le mois de janvier, les élèves de la 1ère année de l’école Saint-Joseph (Wawa) ont reçu la visite de deux animaux de très grande taille.

En effet, M. Kirk Whitlock, enseignant, a apporté un ours et un bison à l’école ! Les élèves étaient vraiment excités ! Ils ont appris plusieurs faits sur ces animaux : leur habitat, ce qu’ils mangent, leur grandeur, leur pesanteur, comment ils vivent.

Les discussions étaient très animées et M. Whitlock a dû prendre des mesures pour déterminersi les amis de la 1re année étaient plus grands que Bonbon l’ourson.

Quant à Bijou LeBison, il n’y avait aucun doute ! Elle est

immense !!!

“A Valentine's Day Mystery ” Roseanne Hart eagerly anticipated Valentine's Day on February 14th, after 1950. This was because on February 14th of that year she received her first bouquet of a dozen red roses., which included a card that declared: : 'For my sweetheart, from afar.' It was signed: 'From a loving and devoted admirer.' They arrived by the delivery van from 'The Flower Shoppe' at 8 a.m., She asked the driver if he knew who was sending them, but he replied with a shrug, that he just delivered the flowers. Obviously her admirer knew that she left the house for work at the Redd & White Insurance Company by 8:30 a.m., He also must have known that she was single, with no boy friend or other admirers, she assumed.

She received her second bouquet in 1951. As before they arrived by the delivery van from 'The Flower Shoppe' at 8 a.m. The tradition continued, as Saturday deliveries also arrived at 8 am by the flower shop van. A taxi would make the delivery on those years when it fell on Sunday, again arriving just after 8 a.m.

In 1955 she decided that it was time to try and find out who her secret admirer was.

This year, as part of her plan, she asked the clerk to give her a call when he came in to order the roses. Two days before the 14th, she got that call. She asked her to try to stall him until she got there. She was only five minutes away. She got the call at 10:00 a.m. But by the time she got to the flower shop, he was already gone. The clerk apologized that she could not delay him as he sensed that something was up, and quickly paid for the bouquet, wrote the card, and dashed out of the store. In fact, she added, you just missed him, and probably even likely passed by him.

Roseanne racked her brain, trying to recall who she had just seen as she came towards the shop.

But since the flower shop was on a corner lot, he must have gone up the other way from where she came from, she suspected. But she ran out of the store anyway, and looked around the corner, and up and down the street, but saw no one. She returned to work, disappointed that her plan didn't work – but oh so close. Better luck next year, she thought to herself as she sat down at her desk in the pool area.

So she eagerly awaited the 14th, to see if he was going to send her the usual dozen red roses. Sure enough, at 8 am sharp, the delivery truck arrived with her flowers. She took the box wrapped in a huge red bow, and tipped the driver a whole $5.00, a huge tip for those times. She took them out to the kitchen to unwrap the box and open the tissue paper that they were wrapped in. She already had her crystal vase set up with

water, anticipating that she was indeed going to get her flowers.

She found the card inside and put it aside to read later. She gently unwrapped the paper, and held the bundle away from her body, to admire them before dismantling them to arrange in her vase. She smelled each one as she put in them in. The last item was the fern stems to complete the arrangement. She then used the bow from the box to wrap around the vase.

She then took it into the living room and placed them on the mantle. She stepped back and admired the finished product.

Satisfied with that, she went back to the kitchen and put the box that the flowers had come in into the garbage can under the sink. Finally she went over to the kitchen table and picked up the envelope. She held it in her left hand for a while, before taking it to the living room and placing it in front of the vase.

She had decided to wait until that evening to read the note.

She began to hum as she then rushed out of the room and got ready for work., as she noticed she was running late. In fact, she did get into the office about 20 minutes late. She got some dirty looks from her supervisor, Mrs. Chock, but she never said anything to her. Roseanne got the feeling that she had wanted to say something to her, but had been told to leave her alone.

She was grateful for that. It was the first time she had been late in over two years, she reminded herself, and she was not in the mood to be chastised for being just a few minutes late.

Despite the work load that had to be done that day she got through the day quite well, knowing she had his card to look forward to read that night. She hurried home and began supper. While that was happening, she headed to her bedroom, where she changed into her one and only sexy red dress that she had bought back in 1951, after she received that first bouquet of roses and note.

Her rationale being that maybe some day he would reveal himself, and they would go out for dinner and dancing, and then who knows what after that. But for now she knew that she had to settle for that in her dreams.

For the moment she would have to create her own romantic evening. So she lit a candle to put on the dining room table.

She gobbled down her meal, and took the dishes out to the kitchen sink. Then she poured herself a glass of red wine. She took it into the living room, took the card off the mantle, replacing it with that candle, and settled into her chair, putting her wine on the TV table beside it. She held the card in her hand for several minutes, before taking a deep breath and gingerly opened the card. First she skimmed over the words before going back and reading it more closely, devouring each

word. It was as romantic as other years, she commented to herself.

The note read: “ My dearest Roseanne – Here we are again at Valentine's Day. You are as beautiful as ever, and you continue to be the most wonderful person. Your kindness and thoughtfulness makes you shine like an angel. God Bless You! Please don't change.”

As always it was signed as her secret admirer.

The next year, 1956, she purposely took the 3 days vacation time off work prior to Valentine's Day, and spent most of each day hanging around the flower shop, outside and inside both, in the hope that she would finally meet this secret admirer.

But he must have been aware that she was there, as he never showed up. When the roses arrived that Valentine's Day, she called the shop, and was advised that the order had been called in by phone to the clerk in the back room. Payment had been mailed in with cash, so there was no way to trace him.

She was mad at being foiled again, but also given a heightened delight at his cleverness and determination to remain anonymous. It was sweet, she had to admit.

In 1957 she gave up trying to find out who he was. She just enjoyed the whole routine, and looked forward to receiving her dozen red roses. Well, yes, she was secretly delighted that someone was so romantic as to give her flowers every year on this special day. But in the back of her mind, she also felt a bit uneasy. Who is watching her, obviously all year long, from afar? Is this person just shy, or is he some weirdo or psychopath? Over the years, though, it had never escalated to anything else. It was just this once -a -year occurrence. So she tended to believe it was just a harmless ritual to be enjoyed.

---Until 1959. Valentine's Day came and went, and she did not receive her bouquet.

She was disappointed, and now really curious as to why it suddenly stopped. She got her answer two days later. Just after she got home from work, a courier knocked on her door, asking her to sign for a 'registered mail' envelope from the legal firm of Wyne & Rose. It was marked 'Confidential and Personal'.

This was the most prestigious law firm in the city. She laid it down on the kitchen table, and walked away. She began making supper. But she kept coming back to look at it, nervous and curious both at the same time what it could be about.

Her curiosity got the better of her. She turned off the pots on the stove, and forgot about supper. She gingerly took the envelope in her hands, and went into the living room, settled on her couch, and got her letter opener out. After taking a deep breath, she opened it, noticing that her hands were shaking. Again, she paused before taking the paper out of the envelope. Finally she got up the nerve to open the letter. She gasped as she saw what was written. It read as follows: “February 9, 1959 My Dearest Roseanne:

I am going to be unable to send you your dozen red roses this year. I will be dead by then. My doctor has given me only a day or so to live. It's an inoperable brain tumour.

But I didn't want you to be left wondering who your secret admirer was for the rest of your life. That is why I have written this letter, and given it to my lawyers. They have been instructed to deliver it to you within three days of my death. I am sure they will do that. They are being paid well for doing my bidding all these years. I expect they will carry out these instructions as well – the most important service they will have ever performed for me.

Yes, I am your secret admirer.

Ever since that first day that I saw you in the steno pool at the office, I fell in love with you. But I am a happily married man, with a wonderful family. I did not want to ruin that relationship, and so I kept this anonymous ritual going for these past years. I hope that you have enjoyed the flowers, and the bit of mystery. I have been delighted at your detective work in the past, trying to track me down.

It amused me greatly. You have the beginnings of a great detective, to be sure. You will be a great asset to the company for years to come, I am sure, and will go far. You have kept me on my toes. Well done!

But I really did want to let you know that you are a beautiful person, in all ways. I am pretty certain that you do not have a boy friend currently, but I hope that someday you will find someone to send you a dozen red roses every year, love you, marry you, and make you happy. I am sad that it will no longer be me sending the flowers...

In the meantime, until you find Mr. Right, I have put you in my will, a copy which is attached to this letter, that declares that an endowment fund has been established in your name, in the amount of $50,000.00, to be used as you see fit. It will certainly keep you financially secure for your future. Good luck with your life, and I hope you will think of me once in a while, at least.

Roseanne sat there, stunned at what she had just read. Finally she came out of her shock, and flipped to the second page, which was a copy of the will.

It was also dated February 9, 1959.

Suddenly she felt a tear run down her cheek. She began to remember all the times she had seen him coming into the office, since she was hired as a young girl of 18, back in 1948. He was 30, and had just taken over the company from his father when he tragically died in a car accident. She had only talked to him in the briefest conversations after all these years of working there. She said hi to him every morning as he came in. He always nodded, and smiled at her, she recollected. She did talk to him in a bit more detail at her first office Christmas party after being hired. He was charming, and made her feel

at ease, as they chatted about inconsequential things – the weather, how busy things were at work, etc.

But he was the owner of the company. So he was out of her league, she knew. She thought now about how clueless she was, in that she never realized the depth of his feelings for her.

But he never showed any signs, so how could she have known, she began to rationalize now in her mind. She spent the rest of the night in a daze.

The next few days turned out to be a blur for her too.

She still could not get this turn of events wrapped around her head, and what to do with that fund he had set up for her. She couldn't accept that huge amount, just because he had this secret admiration for her all these years. It just didn't seem right. Then there would be the legal ramifications that she would have to handle. The lawyers could take care of that, she guessed, as she was going over all these details in her head.

But she didn't want to go against his wishes. Obviously he did love her, and he had the money to dole out as he saw fit.

In the meantime she did attend the wake and funeral.

Then came the reading of the will. Naturally the family were outraged about the endowment fund that he had been set up for her, and vowed to contest the will. However, somehow, she managed to 'calm the waters'.

Her loving innocence always disarmed everyone she dealt with. During this legal wrangling, at one meeting in particular, his son, Jeff, fell under her spell. He convinced his mother and his two older sisters to withdraw their lawsuit.

At the end of the meeting in the lawyer's office, he invited her out to lunch. One thing lead to another, and by the spring, they were engaged to be married. The wedding took place in September. Peace was restored, since that endowment money stayed in the family, so to speak.

On February 14/60 a tradition was resumed. Roseanne again began receiving a bouquet of red roses. Their arrival was 8:00 a.m. That part of the tradition was also continued.

Only this time it was from her husband, and signed - son of a 'secret admirer'.

On February 14/61 Roseanne began receiving 2 bunches of 12 roses. One bunch was red, and the other was yellow. The second one , the yellow bunch, was added by Jeff to celebrate the arrival of their 5 year son from the adoption agency. They signed all the final papers, and legally changed his name to Jonas Jeffrey White. He came home with them that afternoon of February 13th.. The 2 bouquets arrive at exactly 8:00 a.m.

Jeff's card read: To my always beautiful Roseanne, and signed – in Love and Devotion, Jeff.

The other card from their new son read: Thank you Mommy for making me a part of the family. I am now your biggest and not so secret admirer. It was signed – Jonas.

And so it continues to this very day, February 14, 1970.

TAKE NOTICE that vacancies exist on the Municipality of Wawa Council for two (2) Councillor positions. Council shall fill these vacancies by appointment through a selection process to be determined by Council.

The term of the position is from the date of Council appointment to November 30th, 2018.

Regular Council meetings are held once per month at 6:00 p.m. and Corporate Planning Committee Meetings are held once per month a 6:00 p.m. at the Municipal Offices (Council Chambers). The successful candidate may be required to attend other meetings of various Boards and Committees related to this appointment.

To be considered for appointment, those interested must meet the following qualifications as per the Municipal Elections Act: • A Canadian citizen.

• At least 18 years of age.

• Resides or is the owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of Wawa, or the spouse of such owner or tenant.

• Not legally prohibited from voting.

• Not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office.
