Regional Employment Help Centre Celebrates 25 Years In North Algoma

Article & photo by Barb Fisher   For the past 25 years our Regional Employment Help Centre (REHC) has been helping people find meaningful work contributing to the success and wellbeing of Wawa and surrounding communities of Dubreuilville and White River. Last Monday afternoon a large group of people offered support and gratitude in everything that our REHC has given back to our community.   The gathering was eager to mark the 25th anniversary of the REHC and its fearless leader who has been working the trenches since the Centre's inception, Executive Director Russell Reid. Russell spoke on the development of the Centre and the reinvention of itself many times over. The need for the REHC was quickly evident when in the 1989-90 years, gold mining exploration pulled out of our area and AOD's employment base collapsed leaving people out of work and families in desparation. The REHC was created to meet their needs in offering job retraining, job placement and interim financial aid to help the communities in our

area collect their lives, finances and dignity to enable them in continuing to raise their families in our amazing corner of the north.   Russell gave much thanks to the REHC Board of Directors, community volunteers providing a range of expertise who have been the backbone of the Centre's programs, and without them Russell would not be here giving the acknowlegements. Much thanks to President Bill Devries, Vice-President Liz Talian-Clark, Secretary/Treasurer Maury O'Neill, Directors Johanna Rowe and Melanie Pilon, as well as Robin Maj who after serving for 10 years has moved on to other aspirations. A letter was shared by Bill Devries from Mitzie Hunter, the Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development with the Provincial Government convey-

ing congratulations in all of the REHC's accomplishments, and a similar letter of support from Carol Hughes MP with our Federal Government was read by Mayor Ron Rody. Ron, as a longtime resident of Wawa also added his recollections of the tough times passed and gave much praise to the REHC in helping thousands to find employment and reach their goals. Mike Mantha, MPP for our area was not present but sent a letter of congratulations and a diploma to be presented to President Bill Devries in honouring a job well done by the Board of Directors. Bill Devries presented Russell with a decorative paperweight trophy that will remind him of the many papers that has crossed his desk but quickly disappearing as the electronic age consumes our lives. For the wrap up Gisele Lyons, REHC Employment Services Coordinator, recited a humorous and touching poem summarizing what really goes on behind the work scene at the REHC... and I want what they're having. Sounds like a great way to spend 25 years in the workplace!   If you find yourself in the position of unemployment angst and need a little leg up, check out the services provided by the REHC. awareness of hiring needs by job postings in their offices and on their website, radio job show and newspaper ads, recruitment consultation, customer employment preparation, apprenticeship coordination, resume writing, second career skills training, and resource room availability. Several programs are directed to our youth: employers may receive financial incentives to hire youth with varying degrees of challenges to employment, and depending on the need, they may become job ready for the workplace with minimum hours spent at job preparation workshops. The Youth Job Connection provides summer job opportunities and part-time job placements during the year.

Special focus is given to those facing challenging life circumstances and at risk of poor transitions between education and work.   Much thanks to REHC party planners: Isabeau Allard, Reception: Resource & Information, Employment Services Coordinators Rene Gagne, Donna Korytko, Lisa Weaver, Gisele Lyons, Tim Horton's for the coffee, and John's ValuMart for the delicious cake.
