Dr. Seuss Presents Winter Carnival 2016
Article & photos by Barb Fisher The Cat in the Hat sure was busy representing all the wonderful sights and activities at this year's Carnival, albeit with some long underwear beneath his one-zies! The parade floats demonstrated again that there is no stopping great imagination in our community as a sea of grinning youngsters, and wanna-be youngsters tipped their striped top hats and other recognizable Dr. Seuss attire to everyone who has grown up with his delightful characters. Attracting much attention was a very convincing Mr. Grinch accompanying Ms. Cat in the wonderful striped hat, and mingling throughout the festivities, Mayor Rody was accompanied by his feathered mascot Grady the Wawa Goose who did a little beak synching in his welcoming remarks to the community. Judges of the floats settled on 1st prize to TransCanada Chrysler, 2nd prize to St. Joseph
French Immersion School, 3rd prize to Wawa Minor Hockey, most humorous to Municipality of Wawa and the most spirited again to Defined Movement Dance. At the Community Centre the weekend kicked off with the fireworks display exploding overhead while everyone huddled around the blazing bonfire all carefully lit up, set up and stoked up by our trusty Volunteer Firefighters and the Michipicoten First Nation drummers lent their talents to the welcome. Inside the community centre, a life sized Cat in the Hat fashioned in paper mache, handiwork of the Michipicoten First Nation Youth Council beckoned the crowd out of the blistering cold and into the Artisans and Sellers Fair to look over the great selection of gifts for one and all - just in time for Valentine's Day. It seemed to me that the number of exhibitors surpassed last year with the selection varied and wide. Besides the vendors selling scented candles, jams, jellies, spices, jewellry, makeup, cleanses, dietary and natural health aids, my words cannot give justice in describing Wawa's abundance of talent in our artisans: leather and fur apparel, art works, baked goods, sewn, crocheted, knitted and finger weaved handywork. Several authors displayed their self-authored books for all ages, and homemade greeting cards were offered to accompany some fine silk flower arrangements for those of us challenged in keeping real plants alive.
Getting into the carnival mode with the artwork and handcrafty talented people among us, the contestants' entries were difficult to judge, so as in last year the entire community was invited to vote with the popular vote determining the winners - Dr. Seuss inspired works
of art: 1st prize Eric Morrison, 2nd prize Marek Chalmers and 3rd prize Samantha Toffner. Crochet/knit/sewn Dr. Seuss hat creations: 1st prize Michelle Wheatley and 2nd prize Christine Sorial. Well done everyone. The Science North exhibit is always a big hit for my grandsons and with all the kids attending, I believe that many parents thanked the Science North elf for a few moments of peace. There were many interactive stations set up intended to test problem solving activities with puzzles, a ball bearing balancing maze, stacking and constructing shapes with magnets,
sticks and connectors, sorting items for balance, and legos. A table full of electrical circuit and robotic gismos attracted much attention, and I'm not sure whether our local guys Cliff and Jeff were appointed to be the demonstrators, but they got deeply involved in explaining to everyone just what you can do with such paraphanalia. I was intrigued by the reflex test table whereby contestants held a handle connected to a shock buzzer and when the music stopped, entrants were to press
a button, the last to press getting an electric shock. Enough to reboot my pacemaker! Being the dog person that I am, I did not want to miss the Bill Young Memorial Dog Weight Pull. Again, as in other years it was a very frosty morning indeed, but besides some of the old faithfuls, there were a few new muzzles wondering what the payoff was for this annoying disruption from

the cozy couch. New comers Brutus, the Rotti-Bermese cross didn't seem impressed and Rootbeer, the golden retriever came to life when his handler rubbed the sweet spot on his head. Max, the husky sprang into action when his load was lightened and seemed to take in good humour the hurtful remark by his handler - "You're two bricks short of load, Max." I have to admit to having a favourite, Oscar the Boston terrier. This was his fourth year at the pull and at eight years old, his handler believes that he deserves retirement. However as if to dispell any such wussiness, Oscar jumped out of the blanketed comfort of his handler's arms, pulled the required weight and hopped back into his snuggly retreat. Winners: • Small Class - 1st Trapper (Brett Robinson) 154 lbs in 5 sec., 2nd Oscar (Elizabeth Elliott) 116 lbs in 4 sec., 3rd Zip (Kathleen Johnson) 80 lbs in 1 min, 10 sec. • Medium Class - 1st Max (Neil Farrington) 230 lbs in 21 sec, 2nd Rootbeer (Tracy Laing) 154 lbs in 35 sec. • Large Class - Brutus (Bayne Young) 254 lbs in 25 sec. Much thanks to Young's General Store for again sponsoring this event and donating trophies and prizes, and to Barb Thorne and helpers who make the event successful each year. Continued on page 2....
