"BUGS" Infestate Winter Carnival Canadians Feeling
Patriotic For The First Time Since Liberals Take Office United We Roll Canada Convoy Brings Huge Success In Raising Awareness
Article & photos by Barb Fisher Much preparation has been mounting for several weeks now in bringing another exciting Winter Carnival to our community. The Wawa Volunteer Firefighters set the stage for safety and efficiency in preparing the kick-off activities Friday night, and what a great start to the Carnival. The firetruck headed the parade infestated with creepy, crawly, slimy....in a good way bugs: kids bundled up in their mufflers sported identifyable wings, freckles and antennas and came out of hibernation reminding that bugs are always around us sustaining life on our planet. Our Wawa SnoRiders returned again this year excitedly revving up showing off the latest in snowmobile thrill riding - the snow bike, a dirt bike modification adapted for the powder. Everyone was a winner, but special accolades went to St. Joseph French Immersion Catholic School who took first prize with their lively human "bug" collection, Mission Motors was voted the most spirited with their red truck camouflaged with black
freckles and infested with pesky cling-ons, Mike Mantha was indeed the most humorous, and also a good sport with his antennas and "orange" shirt forever on the campaign trail, and after many years Brenda Grundt finally fit in perfectly to the carnival theme - her ride "The News Bug" taking second prize! Arriving at the Community Centre, the Volunteer Firefighters were stoking up the bonfire and carefully monitoring the ignition of the fireworks so everyone could enjoy the evening safely. The snowhill looking over the festivities was infested with snow flees, a great vantage point for the spectacular display of fireworks above. The evening was topped off with a Family Dance inside the Community Centre sponsored by Superior Children's Centre-Best Start Hub and got the weekend spirit underway with party attire; all things bugs. The weekend featured many eating ops with the Wawa Goose Senior's Drop In Centre kicking off Friday lunchtime with chili, Indian tacos, homemade bread and
dessert, Saturday and Sunday mornings you could catch the Rotary Club members early in the kitchen preparing breakfast of pancakes, sausages and the trimmings. The Saturday night Legion wing ding and Monday night United Church stew supper filled up any tummy crevice left in the weekend's eating culinary experience. The Artisan and Seller's Fair always draws a big crowd as visitors and shoppers seek out that one-of-a-kind crafter's treasure. Baked goods tempted the sweet toothed with Judy Moore's array of cakes and cinnamon buns. Many of our well known exhibitors returned with their wares: Amore from the Soo offered lingerie, bath products, massage oils and lotions, and Avon reps also had a full line of their products on display. Lynn Wheatley and her daughter Taara Smith showcased a great artwork display, and Lynn eagerly explained that after a hiatus she was back showcasing her artwork. My personal favourite go-to booth is George Karasek's display of fur apparel. Article & Photos Continued on Page 7...
