Winter Carnival Celebrates All Things Canadian - Eh!

Article & photos by Barb Fisher   Much preparation has been mounting for several weeks now to bring another exciting Winter Carnival to our community. The Wawa Volunteer Firefighters set the stage for safety and efficiency in preparing the kick-off activities Friday night, and what a great start to the Carnival. The firetruck headed the parade of floats which featured Canadian favourites that we all share: kids bundled up in their mufflers, sporting hockey shirts, rosy cheeks, and wide smiles with the pumper truck tagging a Timbit trailer, and Tim Horton's signature car featured a huge double-dipped donut on top. What could be more Canadian than that? Unique this year to the lineup, our Wawa Sno-Riders excitedly revved up showing off the latest in snowmobile thrill riding - the snow bike, a dirt bike modification adapted for the powder. "It's the hottest bike on the planet!" Arriving at the Community Centre, the Volunteer Firefighters were stoking up the bonfire and carefully monitoring the ignition

of the fireworks so everyone could enjoy the evening safely. The Michipicoten First Nation drummers provided their signature message reminding us to celebrate the strength in our differences and appreciate what we all have in our corner of the beautiful Canadian north. The evening was topped off with a Family Dance inside the Community Centre sponsored by Superior Children's Centre-Best Start Hub and got the weekend spirit underway with party attire; all things Canadian. Carnival float winning entries went to the Wawa Fire Department, L'Escalade,

and Mission Motors.   The weekend featured many eating opportunities with the Wawa Goose Senior's Drop In Centre kicking off Friday lunchtime with chili, Indian tacos, homemade bread and dessert, Saturday and Sunday mornings you could catch the Rotary Club members early in the kitchen preparing breakfast of pancakes, sausages and the trimmings. Saturday noon hour the Community Centre canteen dished out the carnival staple Indian tacos, and Monday night United Church dinner filled up any tummy crevice left in the weekend's eating culinary expe-

rience.   The Artisan and Seller's Fair always draws a big crowd as visitors and shoppers seek out that one-of-a-kind crafter's treasure. Baked goods tempted the sweet toothed with Judy Moore's array of cakes and cinnamon buns, and Tracy's Tasty Treats offered cupcakes, heavy on the chocolate. Many of our well known exhibitors returned with their wares: B-Belle offered her much sought after handmade and all natural bath bombs and body pampering products, A &H Hobbies' Allyson and Haley Fortin showed off an array of homemade crafts and practical gismos, June's Wooden Crafts displayed wooden plaques and

crocheted apparel, a first time presenter Amore from the Soo offered lingerie, bath products, massage oils and lotions, and Avon and Tupperware reps had a full line of their products on display. My personal favourite go-to booth is George Karasek's display of fur apparel. He always has an interesting yarn to tell on his life as a trapper, and I was eager to hear his latest tale in his wide knowledge of animal folklore. George has spent much time on Baffin Island where he still gets his seal skins for his craft, and today's story featured the Ookpik, a little furry keepsake on display originating from the Inuit people. The mythical animal is made as a child's toy and in the Inuit community it is gifted to youngsters accompanied with a story to delight the kid in all of us.   Article & Photos Continued on Page 3...
