Christmas Hampers - Another Community Success
Article & photos by Barb Fisher Although 2017 may go down as a year filled with global tragedies, here in Wawa our community has again stepped up to the plate in making the Christmas season enjoyable for us all, including the less fortunate. At the end of every year the Christmas Hamper Fund Committee with the Lions Club and the Royal Canadian Legion partners with other groups in organizing, collecting and assembling the Christmas hampers. Together with Chair Dick Watson, Co-Chair and Treasurer Nancy Donald,
Secretary Debbie MacDonnell and a very efficient work crew, the boxes were all packed with care ready for pickup without a moment to spare. The canvassing begins early in the year and by the wrap-up of the drive a great many businesses, organizations and townsfolk have had a hand somewhere in the assembly. The Volunteer Fire Department together with the Mustangs girls hockey group sirened and honked their way down each town street giving loud notice to the cause. Besides many food items, their collection of cash donations was quickly turned into won-
derful gifts purchased from local businesses. Throughout the year donations have been ongoing with Brenda Grundt again supplying a Christmas sleigh at the Credit Union to hold donated food items, and the TBS Bargain Shop offered tremendous support in canvassing patrons to donate while together with OPP representatives the Shop supported Santa in a photo-op for the young and the youngat-heart. John's Valu-Mart was instrumental in storing targetted food, and where tur-
keys and hams were carefully kept frozen until the assembly day. Students from Ecole St. Joseph, St. Joseph French Immersion, Ecole publique l'Escalade and Sir James Dunn collected items to provide the best festive breakfast of the year. There were 109 hampers assembled, each containing a turkey or ham, vegetables, fruit, condiments, breakfast goodies, and a gift for children 16 years and younger. Also a $25 gift card to Johns Valu-Mart, TBS Bargain Shop, Canadian Tire or Fenlon's Pharmacy was tucked in each

basket. All purchased items were bought locally from stores and businesses in the Michipicoten area. Personnel from the MNR partnered with a group of volunteers who had been attending a training course at the Regional Employment Help Center, and as the saying goes: many hands make light work. All were a great help in joining others in moving supplies from the stores to the hamper site, and again in carryout help in getting the hampers to the recipients' vehicles. The Christmas Hamper Fund is recognized as a Charitable Organization and receipts for income tax purposes will be issued. Keep this in mind when Christmas time rolls around again. In the meantime, winter will eventually turn into spring bringing all the excitement of many more community events for us all to enjoy and contribute to their success. That's what we are all about. From the beginning of January to the end of December, our community is always ready to step up to the plate. Thanks to everyone involved in another successful Christmas season.
