Giving Back To Our Heroes Ontario’s Canadian Service Members And Veterans Can Now Fish For Free

Photos courtesy of the Government of Ontario The Ontario government is recognizing those who committed themselves to defend our land, waters and way of life with a token of appreciation – they can fish in Ontario at no charge.

Amendments to Ontario’s fishing regulations came into effect January 1, enabling veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members to fish in Ontario’s waters without having to purchase a fishing licence.

“Our government is working to show appreciation for those who put their lives on the line to protect what we cherish as a society,” says John Yakabuski, Ontario Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry.

“Ontario is blessed with an abundance of lakes and rivers that provide recreation to many generations of people living here. We want to help make it

easier and more affordable for our heroes to enjoy those natural resources all year round.”

Canadian service members, retired and active, simply need to carry with them valid identification from the Department of National Defence or Veterans Affairs Canada while they’re fishing. A Canadian Forces identification card, a record of service card, or a Canadian Armed Forces veteran’s service card will act in place of an Ontario Outdoors Card and recreational fishing licence. Those who already purchased a threeyear fishing licence are eligible for a refund, on a pro rata basis.

Sharon McKeown, President of Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, welcomes the introduction of

free fishing to their more than 100,000 members in almost 400 branches across the province.

“Free fishing for our veteran members provides incentive for them to enjoy the sport, when desire strikes, and hopefully the fish are biting!” says McKeown. “On a quiet lake in the woods or a busy waterway, alone or with others, the challenge of the sport is making the catch; a sense of pride and peace of mind are found in the release. The enjoyment of comradeship, in the tall tales shared with laughter, is the reward.

We encourage our veterans to enjoy the freedom of fishing on Ontario’s waters.”

Recreational fishing is a $2.2 billion industry in Ontario. The province has a great diversity

of freshwater fish and is recognized worldwide for its recreational fishing. The ministry works to keep fish populations, and the habitat they depend on, healthy and abundant for anglers.

in addition to providing greater access to fishing, Ontario is standing up for its veterans, Canadian Armed Forces members and their families in other significant ways.

“We’re working to establish a new hotline for military families moving to the province, we’re ensuring Royal Canadian Legion halls in Ontario are exempt from paying property tax, and we’re planning to build a memorial on the grounds of the Ontario legislature that honours our heroes of the war in Afghanistan,” says Minister Yakabuski. “Together, these efforts demonstrate that Ontario remembers their sacrifice, celebrates their courage and is very grateful for their service.”

New Pensions For Life Don’t Live Up To Campaign Promises Made To Veterans The basic idea of consultations is not that hard to understand, yet despite the simplicity, government after government fails to engage in consultation on a number of important fronts. We see the consequences of this type of failure most often associated with resource projects that haven’t properly engaged First Nation communities, but that isn’t the only place that stakeholders are left out of decision making. The most recent example involves the Pensions for Life program that new veterans will receive.

The new pensions are set to roll out this April and will save the government money by reducing the amount that new veterans will receive. The government savings could amount to nearly $2billion over four years which means that veterans will be shortchanged. This upset veterans groups who say the government never sought their input before committing to the new pensions.

The government may be able to claim they created advisory groups of veterans to direct them in their policies and actions, but can’t say as much about listening to them – especially in this case. Although the new pensions

contain elements of suggestions from the panel, a real consultative process would have had more back and forth. Instead, this is another example of the government imposing their will which intersected with advice from the panel in a few instances.

How Veterans end up on the short end of the stick time and again should confound most Canadians. They were an afterthought when the previous Conservative government cut deeply into the Department of Veterans Affairs and closed regional offices that veterans relied on. The same was true when that government changed how newly disabled veterans were cared for by Canada. Now veterans are learning this government also prefers to cut costs rather than deliver on promises made.

During the campaign they were lauded by veterans groups for what appeared to be a promise to bring pensions for newer veterans in line with those for individuals who had retired before 2006. Something clearly changed along the way and these groups are accusing the government of introducing a three-

tiered system where new applicants will receive less than those who applied over the previous 12 years and significantly less than those who applied before 2006.

Those changes include the loss of benefits to help retirees train for and find new careers. It also still denies new disabled veterans the kind of life-time pensions that were available before 2006. On top of this ‘pension pinching’, there have been other instances which show how veteran’s compensation is not a front of mind issue for the government.

Last autumn it was revealed that the government was holding on to hundreds of millions of dollars in lapsed funding intended for veterans. A New Democrat motion forced them to use the funds to improve services and benefits for Canadian veterans.

The Veterans Ombudsman also discovered an accounting error that shorted 270,000 veterans by $165 million. Somewhere along the way the government’s campaign promises melted away to the point that they could not resist trimming finances on the backs of a group of Canadians who have proudly served our country.

Get Funding To Hire Young Canadians For Summer Jobs In 2019 Employers in AlgomaManitoulin-Kapuskasing have until January 25, 2019, to submit funding applications for Canada Summer Jobs 2019 Elliot Lake - Canada’s prosperity increasingly depends on young Canadians getting the education and experience they’ll need to start their careers, according to AlgomaManitoulin-Kapuskasing MP, Carol Hughes.

The Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program creates quality summer job opportunities and valuable work experience for youth aged 15 to 30. Summer jobs are a great way for youth to build their resumes, all while earning a fair wage.

They also help organizations fill labour gaps especially during the busy summer months.

“Now is the time for AlgomaManitoulin-Kapuskasing notfor-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses to apply for funding through the Canada Summer Jobs program, “ said MP, Carol Hughes. “By hiring a young person, you will be helping young Canadians develop their skills and gain valuable work-

place experience.”

Following feedback from stakeholders across the country, changes have been made for CSJ 2019 that will make it easier than ever for employers to provide good quality summer jobs, and for youth to access those quality jobs: • Fewer barriers to good quality jobs: expanded eligibility to include all youth between the ages of 15-30 who are legally entitled to work in Canada – not just students.

• Updated eligibility criteria: eligibility criteria have been changed to set out what is and isn’t eligible for funding • Better job matching: All positions will be posted on jobbank.gc.ca and on the app, to get the word out and help match young people with employers and good quality jobs.

Each year the national priorities for CSJ evolve to reflect Canada's diverse population and changing needs. This year’s national CSJ priorities support: • organizations that provide services to, and intend to hire, youth who self-identify as

being part of underrepresented groups or who have additional barriers to participate in the labour market; • opportunities for youth to gain work experience related to the skilled trades; • opportunities for youth in rural areas and remote communities, and Official Language Minority Communities; • small businesses, in recognition of their contribution to job creation; and • organizations that deliver supports or services to seniors.

Applications by employers for Canada Summer Jobs are being accepted as of December 17, 2018 until January 25, 2019. Employers can now open an account on the Government Grants and Contributions Online Service portal, allowing them to take their time with the application, track it once it has been submitted and get quicker feedback from Service Canada.

Reforming Auto Insurance for the People The Government is Seeking Input on How to Make Auto Insurance More Affordable Ministry of Finance The Ontario Government, working for the people, is inviting drivers and consumers to share their views on how to lower the province's auto insurance rates as part of its commitment to making life more affordable.

"The previous government's failed system of stretch goals on auto insurance is clearly broken. Auto insurance rates in Ontario are among the highest in the country, and action is needed," said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Finance. "We want to hear directly from you on how to improve the system."

Consumers and businesses are invited to share their views by visiting https://www.ontar io.ca/form/survey-makingauto-insurance-more-accessi ble-and-affordable-ontario and by providing input no later than February 15, 2019.

The Putting Drivers First consultation will coincide with a review of Ontario's auto insurance rate regulation system, jointly conducted by the Ministry of Finance and the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario, as mentioned in the 2018 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review. The review will examine practices in other jurisdictions and identify opportunities to achieve greater efficiencies and introduce more competition in the system.

The consultation represents the latest step to get auto insurance costs under control in Ontario. In addition to meeting with auto insurance stakeholders to get ideas on ways to modernize the system by cutting red tape, Ontario is:

Working with the Member of Provincial Parliament for Milton, Parm Gill, on his proposed legislation that, if passed, would eliminate the unfair practice of discriminating against drivers simply based on where they live • Creating a regulatory framework that allows for a more modern auto insurance sector, including electronic communications, and electronic proof of auto insurance • Moving toward full electronic commerce, similar to what is already provided by other financial institutions today, including banks and credit unions.

"Lower auto insurance rates mean we can put more money back into the pockets of taxpayers. The Ontario Government, working for the people, is keeping its promise to put drivers first by seeking their input, finding greater efficiencies and introducing more innovation in the system," Minister Fedeli added.

News Release: Hunting Licence Fee Freeze Ontario Cancels Scheduled 2019 Licence Fee Increase Ontario's Government for the People is making life more affordable by putting a stop to hunting licence fee increases for all Ontario residents and removing the $2 service fee.

"We're making it easier for Ontarians to enjoy the great outdoors by keeping hunting licences affordable," said John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. "This year, there will be no price hike and no service fee. This will put approximately $1.6 million back into the pockets of the hard-working people of Ontario."

In addition to freezing fees, the government has updated

hunting regulations to make things better for hunters across the province. These changes include a new Licence Summary that can be stored on a mobile device or printed at home, paper tags that replace the old game seals and enhanced hunter reporting.

"The hunting industry contributes nearly half a billion dollars to the Ontario economy," said Minister Yakabuski.

"Our hunters are some of the best stewards of our lands and waters and we want to make it easier for them to enjoy our world class natural resources."

Michipicoten Chronicles

Wawa – 150 Years Chapter 1900-1909 Now that WaWa City was officially registered, it was time to get down to business, literally and figuratively.

While Canada was off competing in their first Olympic Games and still accepting new provinces into confederation, the Helen Mine was gearing up to become one of the most successful iron mines in Canada, and the first of many hydro dams were being built on the Magpie and Michipicoten Rivers. Clergue’s plans for the Wawa area were falling into place as the mine was booming, the shipping industry was growing, and his own Algoma Central rail line was constructed between Michipicoten Harbour and the Helen Mine.

The Helen Mine was quickly becoming one of Canada’s most productive iron mines, shipping out almost 3 million tonnes of ore before it closed for the first time in 1918. Given the success of the mine and the influx of Eastern European and Scandinavian families that came to work in the mine, there was also a small ‘town’ built next to the mine containing a school, doctor, grocery store, slaughterhouse and recreation centre. Mail carriers delivered the mail via a lengthy trail system throughout the forest to Sault Ste. Marie, Chapleau and Pukaskwa. Dog sleds were used during the winter months.

Seeing these sights today, it is amazing to think that there were self-contained towns up in those mountains!

In order to supply power to the mine, the Michipicoten High Falls power generating station was created. It was completed by D.B. Deitweiler of Berlin, Ontario in 1907 and was the first hydro operation in Northern Algoma. High Falls provided power to the Helen as well as the surrounding gold mines. The Steephill Falls hydro dam on the Magpie River was constructed in order to supply power to the newly opened Magpie Mine as well as the Helen. The Steephill Falls dam was abandoned in

pet moose which he kept at his house.

This is the fourth chapter in “Wawa – 150 Years, 18672017” published by the Town of Wawa, Wawa EDC and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund. Copies can be purchased at the Wawa EDC office at 96 Broadway Avenue.

1924 and is now one of the only remaining examples of a flat buttress style dam in Canada.

The 1900s were no stranger to scandal in the area, as the infamous Minnie M made her voyage to Michipicoten Harbour in October of 1903.

The Minnie M was carrying 100 to 150 men from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Michipicoten Harbour in order to fix the upcoming election for the Liberal candidate, Mr. Smith. By impersonating area voters who were unlikely to turn up in time to vote, Mr. Smith won the election by a whopping 244 votes. The news of the Minnie M would not be kept quiet. Many of the Capt Arthur Batten & S.S. Caribou Heritage Door by Heather Americans who were on the Sinnott ship felt that the news was too good to keep to themselves.

The Conservative candidate, Mr. Miscampbell, quickly got wind of the fix and a petition was filed. It was determined that the Minnie M was filled with illegal voters, the food and liquor served on the boat was illegally procured and distributed, and the boat itself was chartered illegally. Mr. Miscampbell was given the seat.

In 1904, the S.S. Caribou began to make trips to Michipicoten from her home port of Owen Sound. The people of Michipicoten were able to receive goods on a more frequent basis and were also Minnie M in Michipicoten Harbour, c. 1908 able to enjoy travel to Sault Ste. Marie along the scenic coast of Lake Superior. Arthur Batten captained the ship for 32 years and made many trips to Michipicoten and Gargantua Harbour throughout his shipping days. Some of the early pioneers and regular passengers to Michipicoten Harbour may have included William Richardson, who travelled to Michipicoten as a fisherman and later became one of the first Gros Cap lighthouse keepers. Another pioneer of the Wawa area in the early 1900’s was Joe Ball. Joe moved to Clergue's home on Wigwam Island in Michipicoten Harbour c.

The Resolutions - Chapter 2 -

It was now the first day of 2019 in the Jack and Meisha White household. He woke up about 11:00 a.m. in a bit of a fog. The hangover from last night on the 2018 side of midnight, and the new start of 2019 was throbbing in his head. As he rolled over in his bed, he saw that Meisha was not in hers. He heard noises coming from downstairs. As he opened the bedroom door to head to the bathroom, he realized that the TV was blaring. He went into the bathroom, and did his business, had a quick shower, and shuffled back to the bedroom, and got dressed.

Then he headed downstairs, to the mindless chatter of somebody describing some wonderful float, made of poppy seeds, rose petals, and so on. That was when he realized the Rose Bowl Parade was what was accosting his senses. He also remembered then that Meisha loved to watch this every year.

She would never miss it in all the years they had been married (all 7 of them!). He popped his head into the living room, and saw her hunkered down on the chesterfield, with a cup of coffee balanced on the arm.

He called out 'good morning', and she managed to look away from the TV long enough to look at him, and called back the same. He knew better than try to interrupt her from the program, so he headed to the kitchen and got his own cup of coffee. He put it on the kitchen table while he got out some cereal. A couple of spoonfuls of that, and he had had enough cereal for the day. He put the half full bowl in the sink, and noticed that she had cleaned up the sink of the dirty glasses from last night. She must have gotten up fairly early, although he never heard her getting up.

He took a deep breath, and grabbed his coffee, and headed into the living room. He headed over to his big lounge chair, and plopped into it, and lay his coffee on the coffee table beside his chair. He focused on the TV, and saw one of the marching bands strutting along. He took a quick glance at her, to see if he could gauge what sort of mood she was in today. But she never looked his way at all. She had her knees up, trying to balance her own bowl of cereal on her lap.

Jack was wondering if she would bring up that baby talk resolution from last night. He closed his eyes, as all that movement on TV was making his headache worse. He wished that he could have shut out the noise too. But finally the chatter from the TV faded away, as he dozed off.

He woke with a start, when he heard her get up off the chesterfield, and began tugging on

his toes. The room was quiet, and he realized she had turned the TV off. That was a pleasant reprieve.

“Hey, wake up, Jack. You slept through the parade. It's one o'clock. You missed some beautiful floats. Did you want any lunch?” He struggled to get himself woken up. The worst of the pounding headache had receded anyway. He yawned loudly, and mumbled to her, “Uh, yeah, sure. What are you having?”

“I was going to have a poached egg on toast. How does that sound?”

“Yeah, sure.” She headed out to the kitchen to make it. The cereal that he had put there earlier had gone to mush, so she dumped it in the garbage can under the sink and rinsed the bowl before stacking it back in the cupboard.

Jack made his way out too, carrying his now cold coffee.

He dumped it in the sink, and poured himself another warm cup. By then she had the eggs & toast ready. She placed one plate at her spot on the kitchen table, and the other in front of him. They both stared at the eggs on the toast, not sure if they really wanted to eat it or not. They both slathered the ketchup on top. They both took a breath simultaneously and began.

While they ate, Jack ventured to start a conversation, but dreading where it might go.

“How was the parade. Sorry I missed most of it.”

She replied in an upbeat tone, “Oh, it was wonderful as usual. I just love watching it. I can never get over how they put those floats together.

Spectacular! The bands are wonderful, too – such precision in the marching, and I can never get over how many people they have in their bands It sure puts our pitiful band that marches in the July 1st parade to shame, doesn't it.!

You know, I have watched it nearly every year since I was a little girl. It's my tradition to start off a new year. I know you don't get off on it. But that's ok. I don't care about the football games later today.

That is your part of the day.

So that makes us even, doesn't it?”

He nodded in agreement.

“Yep, there should be several good games on today. I should call Henry just to make sure he is still coming. I already know the other guys from work are coming. I'll call Harvey too, to see if he wants to come over.”

He stopped abruptly when he realized that he was treading into dangerous territory. But he plunged ahead anyway. He just had to know how serious this baby notion was going to be.

So he ventured a comment,. “Maybe Henry and Harvey will be in as rough a shape as me, after last night.

That was a fun night though

– sure glad to see the end of 2018, eh what?”

Meisha replied, “I don't really remember too much it, especially after the countdown with the ball at Times Square.

I know we all were sitting around talking about stuff, but don't ask me what it was now.

I don't even remember going to bed. But obviously I did make it upstairs. What time did you come up?”

“It was about 2:30 I think.

I didn't really check the clock, if you know what I mean in my buzzed state Well, I'll give Henry a call first. Do you think Harvey would come? I don't know if he even likes football. He's your brother, so you would know better than me. Since he only came back here last summer, we haven't had a New Year's Day before.”

“No, I don't think he is into sports. But give him a call anyway, and see how he is feeling today. I don't think he drank very much last night, and Hannah just sipped on a ginger ale all night long. She was a bit of a downer wasn't she. I tuned her out though,as I was not going to let her ruin my evening.”

Jack commented: “Yeah, I don't know what Harvey sees in her. Such an ugly duckling too, eh. I ignored her too. I'm afraid that I didn't say much to Harvey either. I know he is your brother and all, but I just didn't know what to talk to him about.”

To which she replied with a shrug: “I know. That is just his nature – never very talkative. You just never knew what he was thinking, especially with his dark eyes. He always was that way ever since I can remember him when I was really young. Anyway, go ahead with your call. I'm going to start on the chicken wings and salad for you guys.”

She got up from the table and went to the refrigerator.

He looked around for his cell phone, finally finding it in his jacket pocket, which was hung by the front door. He went back to his lounge chair in the living room to make his calls. Alice answered the phone. “Hullo...” That was all she said. He could tell she was feeling pretty rough too today.

He spoke back to her, “Hi, it's Jack.. How are you this morning?”

“Oh, hi, well, a little rough,” she confirmed his impression.

“How about yourself, considering it's afternoon now?”, she countered.

“Yeah, pretty much the same. Smarty pants. Okay this afternoon. Ummm, is Henry there? I wanted to confirm he is coming over to watch the football games on TV.” “Yes, sure. I'll get him. But first, how are things today, you know, with Meisha and you?

Has that baby thing come up yet?”

He whispered back to her, “No, so far, so good. I don't think she remembers what she said, from what she told me earlier. She seems in a good mood, considering her hangover.”

She concluded, “Well, that's

good. Let's hope she has forgotten it. Well, here's Henry now.” And he heard the rustle of the switch being made.

Henry came on the line, “How are you doing today, buddy?” Boy, he sounded way too cheery for me today, Jack thought. But he went ahead and asked him about coming over. He confirmed that he was coming. Then he added, “Yeah, I need to check out all the games – got a few wagers out there on them. I could be a rich man by the end of the day, if all goes well.” That was when Jack realized he really did have a gambling problem. Now he was sorry that he had invited him over. But he couldn't go back now. They set the time to come, and wrapped up the call. Then he called Harvey, who declined. He had other commitments today, he said.

Then Jack called Mark, who let him know he would be coming shortly.

He began to wonder what sort of day this was going to turn out like, between worrying about Henry's gambling, and wondering if Meisha would remember her baby resolution, and make another scene.

But he didn't have long to ponder it, as the first of the guys from work came. By 3:00 p.m. the house was full with the guys, glued to the TV. Meisha reminded Jack that the wings were warming in the oven for whenever they were ready for them. He thanked her, and then shouted as one of the teams scored a touchdown..

She rolled her eyes as she left the room and went upstairs to change clothes and freshen up. Shortly afterwards, Meisha called out to Jack from the hallway that she was going next door to visit Mary, but would be back in time to make supper. He vaguely remembered saying ok, as he turned his attention back to the game.

Later Jack would regret that lapse.

Well, that's a story for another day.........

OBITUARY SADLER, Terry On the snowy eve of Tuesday, January 8, 2019, Terry completed his journey here on earth doing what he loved most: singing. Creative, artistic, ingenious, hands-on, entrepreneur-minded, entertainer, visionary, volunteer.

These are words that describe a man, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend who was truly loved and admired. Terry shared his many talents with those around him, and through his music and art he made many smile. His infectious grin and sly sense of humour reflected his deep passion and joy for life.

In 1940, Joseph Arnold Terrence was born to the late George Sadler and Anne Matton in Cobalt, Ontario. He is predeceased by his soulmate Mary (Nicholson) Sadler.

Together they raised a family that will forever be imprinted with their enduring love legacy. Terry will be forever remembered by his children: Anne (Gerry) McCrank, Kelly (Andrew) McKenzie, Tina (Chris) Annan, Robyn (Shawn) Dewar, Tracy (Trevor) Laing, Tonya (Mark) Woods, and Shawn (Lea) Sadler. He will also be fondly recollected by his 21 grandchildren: Dustin, Courtney, Kendell, Mitchell, Brittany, Cameron, Ellie, Alana, Travers, Katie, Avery, D’Aundra, Aurora, Mackenzie, Talus, Aiden, Quinn, Patrick, Grear, Lachlan, and Farren.

Terry enjoyed meeting his five great grandchildren: Isabella, George, Leo, Callum, and Claire. Terry will be memorialized and missed by his brothers and sisters, and sisters in law: Norman (Bonnie) Sadler, Shirley (Ted) Lacroque, Diane (Juan) Brouillard, Brian (Janit ) Sadler, Sharon (Richard) Cyr , Debbie (Peter) Rogers, Irene Nicholson, Beryl Nicholson and Paula McAvoy.

And will always be in the hearts of his uncles and many, many nieces and nephews. The Sadler family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Timiskaming Emergency Services and the Temiskaming Hospital medical staff for their kindness and concern for Terry during his final moments.

SANFORD, Donna It’s with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother Donna Lynn Elizabeth Sanford on Tuesday January 8th, 2019. Mom was born in Wawa, Ontario on July 6th, 1949 to her parents Theresa (Huck) and Gordon Lohnes.

Many may have known her as the independently successful owner/operator of Loeb in Nortown Plaza, Chatham and IGA grocery stores in Blenheim, Ridgetown, and Harrow.

Mom was the proud matriarch of her family which included Dane (Amy), Kassie (Tim), Ryan, Scott (Jodi), grandchildren Brendan (Amy), Spencer, Chloe, Michael, Amber, Molly, Keegan, Reilly and great-grandchildren Brian, Benjamin, Braxton, Cruz and Carter.

Many people considered our mom as their mom too. Always putting others first, sharing, helping, giving unconditional love to others, and saying “Howdy!” (a lot). She was definitely larger than life.

In keeping with mom’s wishes, her ashes will be placed beside her dad’s at Evergreen Cemetery in Blenheim. This part of her life will be respected with quiet dignity. Her family and close friends will celebrate her life at a later date.

MUNICIPALITY OF WAWA NOTICE NO OVERNIGHT PARKING The Municipality of Wawa, By-Law No. 2513-11, Winter Parking becomes effective every year from October 15 – May 15. This by-law prohibits parking upon any street within the municipality between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. It is also unlawful to park any vehicle, trailer or vessel on any boulevard in the municipality.

Any vehicle, trailer or vessel found contravening this By-Law will be removed at the owner’s expense and a fine will be imposed in accordance with the amounts established by By-Law 2513-11.

Daily storage fees for vehicles removed will also be levied against the item. All costs must be paid in full prior to the item being released to the owner. Please obey the law!

NO DEPOSITING SNOW The Municipality of Wawa, By-Law No. 1059-96, prohibits the dumping of snow or ice on property of the Municipality or private property.

Any person found contravening this By-Law, a fine will be imposed in accordance with the amounts established by By-Law 1059-96.

Pushing snow across roads and streets is not only a safety hazard; it is also against the law.

A Message Of Thanks From The Hospital Foundation

The Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to all donors who contributed to the Foundation’s “Wish Upon a Star” campaign. A total of $12,917 was donated through this campaign. Generous hearts certainly prevail in the communities that the Lady Dunn Health Centre serves.

École Saint-Joseph

Projet de lecture

À l’École Saint-Joseph, Wawa, Mme Sherry Ann Comtois, bibliotechnicienne, a organisé un projet « tronc d’arbres » pour augmenter l’intérêt à la lecture!

Un arbre avec dix feuilles avait été remis à chaque classe de la 1ère à la 8e année. Chaque feuille représentait la lecture de 10 livres pour un total de 100 livres. À chaque 10 livres lus une feuille tombait.

La compétition était féroce, quelle classe finirait ses 100

livres en premier! Dès qu’une classe atteignait 100 livres la classe recevait un certificat et les élèves recevait une récompense, soit un chocolat chaud avec guimauves. Félicitations à la classe de 3e année avec M. Kirk Whitlock qui a été la première classe à faire tomber toutes les feuilles de son arbre!

Merci Mme Comtois, les élèves se sont bien amusés et ont fait de belles lectures!

École Saint-Joseph Secondaire Un débat animé sur les jeux vidéo

Pendant leur cours d’éducation à la citoyenneté, les élèves de l’École secondaire Saint-Joseph ont pris la parole lors d’un débat animé!

Après avoir examiné, avec l’appui de leur enseignante, Mme Annette Lytwenko, les valeurs de la société, les élèves ont développé leurs opinions basées sur la recherche et les preuves portant sur les effets

des jeux vidéo sur les adolescents. Aspects culturels, comportementaux, sociaux et académiques ont été discutés sous plusieurs angles, tous et chacun donnant des opinions appuyées. Les élèves ont été au-delà des attentes lors de leur débat tout en respectant les opinions des autres participants. Un sujet captivant! Et vous, quelle est votre opinion?
