As there was no housing readily available in Hawk, Fred Sr. had rented a building from the Abitibi Pulp and Paper Company at Mile 163 ½ which was a mile and a half h January 17th January 24th January 31st walk South of Hawk. This was h February 14th February 21st February 28th to be their home until he was able to build in 1934. This March 14th March 21st March 28th meant a mile and a half walk

to and from school for the three oldest girls throughout the winter months.

The Townsite The town survey for that time shows 45 surveyed lots (18 occupied) plus a 252 x 250 foot lot for the School Board. The layout consisted of 3 north/south Streets which were Front Street (now the highway through town), College Street, then King Street. There were two east/ west streets called Spruce Street which joined Front and College on the north side of the school property and Pine Street on the south side of the school property which joined Front and King, and crossed College Street. It was on the southwest corner of this intersection that Fred decided to build the family home, on lot number forty.

He built it during 1934 and the family moved in during that summer.

School The school was a single room log building with a tent outside as a “portable” classroom. The teacher was Miss Dougherty and she taught all grades up to Grade Ten. Other teachers around that time were Mr. Snyder, who taught before 1932, and Mr. Penock, Mr. Grace, Mr. Huet, Miss Tiffen, and Mr. Yule who taught later.

People There were also a number of families living on the north end of Hawk Lake which is now called Finn Beach, and they were Frank Koski, Kusti Maki, Harvey Holmes, Mr.

Oddities The only indoor plumbing in Hawk at that time was in the Hawk Hotel. They did however have a jailhouse. It was located in the old “Y” which can be seen in aerial photos of Hawk at that time, running by what is now the Big Bear Hotel site. The mail consisted of a rectangular building which could fit on a flatcar. It was later hauled uptown and served as Loudy Bennet’s shed.

An interesting story about the Jail was that ACR policeman Art Duncan locked up one of the locals for being drunk and disorderly, but it was a cold night so the fellow broke out, went home to get a blanket, then came back and spent the night in jail!

Epilogue Fred and Vic Jones went on to raise ten children in the house at the corner of College and Pine Streets. Four of them were born after their move to Hawk. They were Dorothy, now Mrs. Fern Tomas of Sault Ste. Marie, Charles of Ottawa, Robert, now deceased, and David of Wawa.

Leona Smith is still in Hawk, having raised eight children there, and has the distinction of being one of the three residents who have lived longest in Hawk, along with Cliff Bain and Betty Valois. Fred Jones passed away in 1968, and Vic followed him in 1974.

Mayor Rody displayed the most recent "Goose Print" depicting our newly erected icon that gives our community instant notoriety for many people worldwide. The artist, Michael Cleary has provided the perfect keepsake to remember our community and this is the third Wawa goose that he has captured on canvas. You will be seeing the image popping up at events and the print will be presented as gifts to commemorate special occasions.

Council approved the payment of the list of accounts for the month of December in a total amount of $1,192,906.26.

Bylaws given three readings and passed: -3091-18 - to confirm the proceedings of Council at its meeting of January 9.

-3092-18 - to amend Bylaw 1635-04 and enter into a Lease Agreement with Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Ontario as represented by the Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal in respect to the lease of municipal office space to be used as a Provincial Court.

-3093-18 - to authorize the Municipality to enter into an agreement with Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Ontario represented by the Minister of Transportation regarding funding under the Dedicated Gas Tax Funds for Public Transportation Program.

$5,500 in Fines for an Illegal Moose Hunt Dec. 15, 207 - A Wawa man has been fined a total of $5,500 for moose hunting offences.

Richard Watson pleaded guilty and was fined $1,500 for being a party to the offence of discharging a firearm from a motor boat and $4,000 for hunting a cow moose without a licence.

Court heard that in October 2015, Watson, owner and guide at Windy Point Lodge on Kabinakagami Lake, was guiding non-resident moose hunters when one of the hunters discharged a firearm from a motor boat and harvested a bull moose.

Watson was also the guide when a cow moose was shot without a licence. A non-resident hunter, also staying at Windy Point Lodge but not hunting at the time, attached his cow moose tag to the moose.

The charges resulted from a cooperative investigation

between the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Open House At ÉS Saint-Joseph The Conseil scolaire catholique du NouvelOntario (CSCNO) is inviting grade 8 students, along with their parents, to take part in the Open House event at École secondaire Saint-Joseph located at 101 Chruchill Ave. (Wawa), on Thursday, January 18, at 6:30 p.m.

The halls of Sir James Dunn have been busy for the month of December. The Grade 8 Game Changers organized a few fun activities. This group of dedicated students (under the direction of Mrs. McKenzie and Ms. Portis) first organized a winter door decorating contest. All the classes participated and all the doors were unique and original. The Game Changers had a difficult time picking a winner so …. everyone was a winner. Sir James Dunn also had a Hat Day. Students were encouraged to wear a hat and bring in loose change. The Game Changers then donated all of the donations to the Wawa Legion Christmas Hamper Fund.

Students and teachers also brought in canned goods and non-perishable items for this Hamper

Fund. The fun did not stop here. We also saw Christmas Character Day complete with a Santa, a tree, and lots of Elves. Ugly Sweater Day is always fun, as is Christmas Hat Day and the new event of the season – Christmas Hair Day. What a sight to see the teachers scrambling to get their last minute hair done at school. We ended the week with Pajama Day. The Winter Concert was full of laughs, talent and amazing creative ideas. It saw the littlest of our students dressed as penguins dancing and singing, the Grade 1 / 2 class had everyone singing the catchy Snirt Song, the Grade 3 / 4 class wowed us with their singing and signing abilities to Winter Wonderland and Let It Snow, the Grade 5/6 class had us in giggles with their winter jokes, they even did a choreographed dance number called Snow, the Grade 6 / 7 class wrote their own play about

the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics (spoiler alert Canada is predicted to win the gold medal in hockey) and finally the Grade 8 class also wrote their own play about snowmen who come alive, dance and they even competed in So You Think You Can Dance. Great job to all the students and teachers who put so much time and effort into this Concert.

Classes were busy this last week of December making gingerbread men, gingerbread houses, 3D cookies, snow globes, fake snow, writing application forms for positions at the North Pole, and baking goodies. The SJD Tradition continues...for over 40 years staff and students gather each morning to sing Christmas carols – gone is the piano and overhead as it has been replaced by a karaoke machine.

Lost - A Close Call

This Is A Story To Tie In With Alzheimer Society's January Awareness Month: The brutal cold of winter nearly became tragic for one elderly gentleman.

Calvin Whitaker celebrated his 81st birthday on Saturday January 13, 2018. His wife Flora had arranged a small party for the evening. Actually, it was just a birthday cake with his supper.

She knew that by the time that was over, it would be time to get him settled in for the night.

You see, Calvin suffers from Alzheimer's Disease. He really should be in a nursing home, but she can't bring herself to take that step. After all, they had been married for over 40 years, and she can not bare the thought of him in such an institution. It is a constant worry, and a heavy physical and mental burden on her. After all, she is 79 and not all that well herself.

She knows that she can not take much more, but is determined to hold on as long as she can. Her daughter, Margaret and her son Steven, have urged her many times to at least look into finding a place, because they all know it will be necessary, sooner rather than later.

They also have used the argument of looking after her own health, as it would be no good if she got ill and couldn't look after him at all. She knows they are right, but she just wants to put it out of her mind, and concentrate on living day to day. By the end of this day, she knew the inevitable was coming sooner than she wanted it to, though.

Steven picked up Margaret in his car. They arrived about 5:30, just in time to help out.

Flora looked after the meat, vegetables, and potato portion of the meal, while Margaret looked after getting the table set, and the salad made, and the rolls and pickles, and tomato juice out.

On one of the times she had to open the refrigerator, she opened the crisper drawer to get out the lettuce, and to her surprise, she found the remote for the TV. She asked her mother about it. She declared that her father must have put it in there. It's one of the strange things he does these days, she declared as she shook her head.

Steven took over looking after his father. He took him down to the basement of their 3-storey brick farm house. The family had lived there for three generations. Calvin was a dairy farmer, just like his own father.

Steven was not interested in being a farmer, and he knew it disappointed his father greatly when he told him. He had gone on to university, eventually graduating with a law degree.

His father never complained, or tried to persuade him otherwise. Calvin's younger brother, Wilbert 'Willy' stepped in and they were able to keep the farm going. But last year he had died of a stroke. It soon became

evident that his father did not have all his faculties about him.

The clues were subtle at first, but by last fall it became really obvious. One late afternoon in particular, their next door neighbour knocked on the door.

He advised them that his cattle were wandering up and down the concession road, causing a major traffic problem. It came to light that Calvin had left the barn door and the paddock gates open, which allowed the cattle to get out and go for a 'stroll down Park Avenue', to quote the song from the old movie. When his neighbour questioned him, Calvin seemed dazed, and said he didn't remember even being out in the barn at all that day. He blamed his grandchildren. They must have come and let them out.

His neighbour agreed and left it at that.

That was when Flora knew it was getting worse. She now recalled several other times he had displayed strange behaviour over the summer. It had become more noticeable in the fall. The family finally got him to a doctor, who confirmed it was Alzheimer's Disease.

Anyway, back to the 'party'.

His father had been a skilled carpenter, and had made many things for the house and the family. Tonight when he took him downstairs, he was sad to see his father just stand in front of the wood work bench, staring at the tools and wood pieces laying on it. Steven tried to be upbeat and chatted away. He picked up a coping saw, and tried to get his father to show him the proper way to use it.

He just shrugged his shoulders, and turned away to go back upstairs.

Steven sadly followed him up.

By then supper was ready. They ate with a tension in the air.

Of course, Calvin was oblivious to it all. They ate their main course. But Flora just sat there and stared at her plate, as if in deep thought. Finally Margaret asked about the cake. Flora came out of her thoughts, and jumped up, heading out to the kitchen to get it. Margaret and Steven helped clear the dishes off the dining room table. They were puzzled as they entered the kitchen, and watched their mother hustling back and forth along the counter, as if unsure what she was supposed to be doing. Margaret interrupted her pacing, and asked where the cake was. She replied that she had put it in the oven to 'warm it up'. Margaret became alarmed, and rushed over and opened the oven door. Fortunately it had not begun to melt, so she quickly took it out and put it on the counter. Not wanting to question her mother she merely said that it was all done, and now was ready to be served.

Flora snapped out of her confu-

sion, and took over as if nothing untoward had just happened.

She told the kids to get back in to the dining room. She just wanted to plug the kettle in for tea. Momentarily she came in with the cake. There was one candle in the centre. Steven lit it, and told his father to wake a wish and blow out the candle.

Calvin appeared to do that, and he actually blew out the candle.

Everyone clapped. Flora cut the cake for him, and handed out a piece to everyone. In the back of her mind Margaret was listening for the kettle to begin boiling, so the tea could be made.

Just then, they all heard a click and the smoke alarm went off.

Steven rushed out, and saw the kettle smoking. He realized the circuit breaker had cut in, thank goodness. Margaret and Flora came in just then and she asked her mother if she had filled the kettle first. She was beginning to get concerned that her mother was 'losing it' too. Flora assured her that she had. The two kids knew right well that she hadn't. She just shrugged her shoulders, and muttered something about getting forgetful. In the commotion of getting the dishes cleaned up and getting the cake ready, she must have forgot to fill the kettle, she suggested. She deflected any further discussion as she stated that she would make coffee instead. She had no problem doing that. The kids watched until they saw the coffee dripping into the carafe.

They went back into the dining room. Their father was sitting there staring at his hands which were stuck in his piece of cake. Flora cleaned him up, and they finished eating their piece of cake. The coffee was ready by then. Once they their coffee cups filled and on the table, they helped him open his gifts.

He abruptly got up and headed to the living room, and sat down in front of the TV. He stared at the blank screen, as it wasn't turned on. The rest followed him in. Steven piped up, and suggested they watch the news.

The remote was put back in place. They stayed until about eight, when Steven said he had to get back to town to check on the kids. Margaret joked that her taxi was here. Steven commented at the door, “It's really cold tonight. Look, the thermometer shows -20 degrees C already. This will be the coldest night yet, I'm sure,” he concluded.

His mother urged them to get going, and not leave the door open, letting out all the heat. So they left, saying in parting, to be sure to call if she needed any help. She assured them that she would.

She went back to the living room to watch TV with him for a while before getting him ready for bed. He made no fuss, and followed her upstairs. She helped him into his pajamas, and into bed. This was about nine o'clock.

She went downstairs to wash the dishes, and do a bit of reading before turning in. She was so exhausted that she fell asleep in her chair. She woke up about eleven and headed for bed.

She popped into the bathroom first. Then she headed to the

bedroom. She stumbled over to her side of the bed, and turned on the table lamp on the night stand. Normally she would have turned on the overhead light, but after the ordeal of the evening, she did not want to wake him up. She turned to get her pajamas and night gown from the hook behind the door, when she looked at the bed, and went into a panic.

He was not there. She looked all around the room, not believing her eyes. Once she realized he was gone, she dropped her pajamas and night gown and dashed from the room, calling to him. She checked each room upstairs first, and then headed downstairs.

Like many old farmhouses, there was a back door as well as a front door. At the end of her search she came to the back door, and saw that it was wide open. She uttered a cry of fear. He must have gone outside, and likely in just his pajamas, she bet. She dashed out the door without putting on a coat, scarf, gloves or boots, calling his name. She headed to the barn first, expecting that was where he had likely headed.

But he was not there. She left the barn and ran down the lane, and looked up and down the road, hoping to see him standing there. But there was no sign of him. With a mounting fear of what might happen if she didn't find him soon, she rushed back to the house, and called Steven.

He told her he would be there as soon as he could, but that would take nearly half an hour, Flora realized. In the meantime, she called her neighbours. They agreed to start a search party immediately.

With such a cold night, time was of the essence. The search began. They all finally met back at the house half an hour later, all with negative results.

Well, except for one. One of the neighbours mentioned casually that it looked like someone had been trying to steal some wood from the woodlot at the east edge of the property. There was some fresh sawdust on top of the snow at the base of one of the old maple trees, and boot tracks all around the tree, he added.

By then Steven and Margaret had both arrived at the farm.

That triggered an idea from Steven. He jumped up and headed down to the basement.

The others followed him. Sure enough his father was there at the work bench, He was busy peeling off the bark from the branch he had just cut off the tree. He was just wearing his now wet pajamas. He had on his slippers, fortunately, so although his feet and slippers were soaking wet, at least there was no frost bite. Calvin was oblivious to all of the commotion . He was absorbed in working with that branch. Somehow he had managed to elude them all, or maybe he had been there all along. His mother admitted that she had not thought to check the basement before heading outside. The open door had thrown her off, she freely admitted now. Margaret assured her mother that it was not her fault. Just look at the wet clothes and slipper that

you know he had been outside, she said. He must have come in when you were down the lane looking for him, maybe, she suggested. That seemed to calm her down.

He looked up, and as if in a trance that was suddenly broken, he smiled and said to Steven: “I remembered this lovely piece of wood that I had spotted last fall when I was tilling in the back 40 there by the woodlot. It will make a lovely pair of candlesticks for your mother. I should have them completed by her birthday in March. Oops. Sorry, Flo. I spoiled the surprise, didn't I.” She smiled at him, partially because of the remark, partially out of relief that he was found okay, and partially that he was back in the world of the living, if even for just a short time.

One of the neighbours suggested that he should get out of his wet pajamas and slippers.

Flora realized the wisdom of that. Then she put on her hostess 'hat'. “C'mon everybody. I'll get you all some hot coffee and some of Calvin's birthday cake.

I want to thank you all for coming to our rescue. Margaret, can you get that going for me, while I look after Dad here.” She agreed, and everyone headed upstairs to the kitchen, where it was toasty and warm. She succeeded in getting him to come upstairs too, assuring him that he could go back down later.

She also convinced him that he should be a good host, and come back to his guests after she got him changed into dry clothes She brought him back downstairs to thank everyone for searching for him. He was in a lucid frame of mind at that moment. He did that, and went on to apologize for the commotion he had caused. Then he encouraged them to go home and get to bed. The excitement is all over for tonight, he assured them. It was nearly two in the morning when the gathering broke up. As each one of the neighbours left, he asked about their wives or husbands and their children, getting all their names correctly.. They were all astonished how one minute he was right out of it, and the next sharp as a tack. Although no one said anything, they all knew it was Alzheimer's Disease.

They all felt bad for Flora having to struggle with this, but being the dutiful wife in trying to keep it private. But they said nothing that night. The all agreed by themselves that this could be discussed at a later date on how they could help her out.

It sure was a night to remember. Unfortunately for Calvin, there were not too many more, and this night was soon forgotten – and unfortunately it appears that it will eventually be Flora's turn. Her doctor confirmed she was in it's early stages. Margaret and Steven suspected that, after the birthday party and their mother's confusion with the cake and then the kettle. They know the family will have to make some big decisions soon, and will have their hands full then...

Talk about a reversal of family roles – the children now having to look after the parents. It's a sad trend ..

OBITUARY

NELSON, John Richard Passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side at the Lady Dunn Health Centre on Friday January 12, 2018 at the age of 73 years. Beloved husband of Arladene (nee Lesage) for nearly 53 years. Proud father of John Jr. (Tammy and the late Dana McInnes), Rose Warren (Tony), Joanne Nelson (Chris Wilson) and Lisa Nelson (Mike Skouris). Adored grandfather of Nicole, Sara, Zack, Keesha, Cora, Hana and Aaron and great grandfather of Addylyn, Remington and Amelia. John is now reunited with his parents the late Tyne and Leo Nelson.

Dear brother of Judy Comrie (Floyd), Linda Lebrun (Rolly), Esther Young (Ed Brown), the late Joan Yakich (late Harry), late Wilma Piaskoski (Ed) and the late Shirley Ross (late Ron). John will be dearly missed by his many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and many friends.

He will also be missed by his fur babies Teddy, Beans, Lily, Misty, Keenu and his bird Murphy. In the spring he will be reunited with many of his late friends in Hawk Junction at the Pine Grove Cemetery. Cremation will take place at River’s Edge Cremation Centre, Sault Ste. Marie. A Celebration of John’s life will be held in the Spring of 2018. Memorial donations made to the Kidney Foundation or to the Diabetes Association would be greatly appreciated by the family. A special thank you to the S.A.H. Renal Clinic Staff, Dr. C. Stamler and all of the staff at the Lady Dunn Health Centre for their care and compassion given to John and his family. Be a Returning Officer Your opportunity to serve democracy in Algoma–Manitoulin– Kapuskasing The work of a returning officer is challenging and rewarding. If you’re a leader with management experience and knowledge of your community, this may be the job for you.

As a returning officer, you will plan and manage federal elections in your riding during a ten-year appointment. You will represent Elections Canada and be on the front line for electors and candidates.

The hours of work vary between elections, but increase significantly in the year leading up to an election.

Ontario Workers Receive First Paycheques With New Minimum Wage

Higher Wages Will Help Increase Business Productivity, Decrease Employee Turnover Ministry of Labour Many workers across the province have now seen Ontario's increased minimum wage reflected in their weekly pay. The general minimum wage rose from $11.60 to $14 on January 1, 2018, and will increase again to $15 on January 1, 2019.

Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn visited HotBlack Coffee in Toronto today to meet with workers who received their first paycheques following the increase. They discussed the benefits a higher minimum wage brings for both workers and employers, including happier, more motivated employees and better workforce stability.

Other provisions that came into effect on January 1, 2018 include: • Expanding personal emergency leave to 10 days per calendar year for all employees, with at least two paid days per year for employees who have been employed for at least a week • Ensuring workers are entitled to at least three weeks' vacation after five years with the same employer • Providing workers with up to 17 weeks off without the fear of losing their job when a worker or their child has experienced or is threatened with domestic or sexual violence, including a paid leave for the first five days • Increasing family medical leave from 8 to 28 weeks per year • Changes to make it easier to form a union and reach a first collective agreement To enforce these changes, the province is hiring up to 175 more employment standards officers. It is also launching a program to educate both employees and businesses about their rights and obligations under the Employment Standards Act. Ontario's plan to create fairness and opportunity during this period of rapid economic change includes raising the minimum wage, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25 through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation.

Quick Facts • The Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017 responds to the final report of the Changing Workplaces Review. It was the first-ever independent review of both the Employment Standards Act, 2000 and Labour Relations Act, 1995.

The report estimated that more than 30 per cent of Ontario workers were in precarious work in 2014. In 2016, the median hourly wage was $13 for part-time workers and $24.73 for full-time workers. Over the past 30 years, part-time work has grown to represent nearly 20 per cent of total employment.

Article by Barb Fisher, photos supplied A new day, a new year and a new hockey player spotlighted - Ashton Neufeld. Since first lacing up his skates, this player now in the Novice division has been eager to join the ranks of hockey fame.

Seven year old Ashton attends Ecole St. Joseph in grade 2 and sports #l7 on his shirt when eagerly watching for his break out opportunity on left wing. According to Ashton getting to play his favourite game with all of his favourite friends...well life doesn't get any better than this. Go Ashton go. We will all be in your cheering section.

Recapping the hockey action this past weekend, the Novice Travellers played four games in Hearst and Cochrane and although they fell short of the winners circle it didn't dampen their spirits, as having a weekend of fun with family and friends was the next best thing.

At home, the Bantams continued with their winning strategies beating Timmins in both of their games, and our Midget Legionnaires won one and lost one game to Chapleau...and the rivalry continues.

By placing as a finalist in this past December's qualifying tournament held in Sudbury, our Peewee Travellers earned a place to compete in the Silver Stick International Tournament in Port Huron, Michigan, and this weekend our young hockey players again made us proud. The tournament attracts teams from North America wide with 20 teams

competing from Florida to California and all points in between. The competition was fierce as our little town's might competed against much larger cities, and our Peewees did us all proud. The Peewees dominated their first game against Baltimore, Maryland and continued in their winning strategy against the host team of Port Huron. The final game of the round robin was a nail biter but ended with Centre Wellington, Ontario taking the win in a narrow lead. Our Peewees placed 7th out of 20 teams in the round robin, but unfortunately met Centre Wellington again who knocked us out of the quarter final medal rounds. Our players gave a mighty show of strength and resilience as it was Centre Wellington who went on to victory and claimed gold. And now all across North America, when the question arises "Where in Heck is Wawa?"....well every hockey community now knows!

Folks stay tuned - the season is young - plenty more hockey to come. Next weekend join the fun and be prepared to be amazed as our Peewee and Bantam teams travel to Thunder Bay to compete in the Robins tournament, and home games at our Community Centre arena match our Novice team against Cochrane at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and our Atoms play at 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. also against Cochrane.
