by Shelley Neufeld were very much appreciated and will bump up considerably Town Council's budget of $2,500 allocated for the upgrades.

Heidi McLaren of The Olive Branch Floral Design has recently launched a very flourishing business in destinctive floral design. In talking about the new venture with Heidi, I could feel the love and have no doubts that she will be very successful in her new endeavour. She has a unique sales angle wherby she just knows things - like birthdays and anniversaries and is able to target the proper source of the celebration.

She fashions each of her creations with artistry and love,

encorporating fresh flowers with greenery from our own surroundings and particularly weaving in special motifs to create unique compositions depicting every special occasion. During the Christmas holidays Heidi worked diligently on her imaginative holiday wreaths, setting up a booth at the fall By-Hands Festival, having in mind that all proceeds after expenses would be donated to the refurbishing of the exercise equipment in our Fitness Centre.

Heidi created 51 wreaths over this period and together with on-line sales she was able to donate a whopping $2,500.

Well done Heidi McLaren!

Also getting into the groove of holiday giving, the Municipality's Fitness Instruction Team, Shelley Neufeld, Chris Rask, Bridget Apner and Mirinda Patterson worked very diligently to keep everyone fit and also donated an impressive cheque to the cause. For the past few years in every month of December the instructors ask from their clientele to donate whatever they can to a worthy cause in

lieu of the session charge. This year the target charity was helping out the Municipality in adding to and upgrading the equipment in the fitness facility, and patrons gave very generously. The fitness program includes classes for all ages, all ability levels, all sport target areas, and all levels of weight bearing opportunities, attracting a particularly wide swath of seniors. With much hard work and generously giving of their time the gals were able to donate an impressive $453.65. Well done Fitness Gals!

On Feb. 1st, 2017 at the Michipicoten Memorial Community Center in Wawa Hockey fans rejoice as some of the greatest names in NHL history take the ice to challenge the Wawa Media & Local All-Stars. The NHL Alumni game is fun for all ages and supports the Special Olympics Ontario and their mission “To provide yearround sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities.”

Best Start Hub's "Foundations Of Learning" Campaign

Article & photos by Barb Fisher, one photo supplied It has been said that children make up 20% of our population, and 100% of our future. The Educators at Superior Children's Centre Best Start Hub are promoting a campaign organized around the four foundations of "How Does Learning Happen".

The Best Start Hub, a dropin centre which is staffed with child development and early years practitioners along with volunteers to deliver programs and support parents and caregivers in finding information, programs and services they need.

Superior Children's Centre Best Start Hub, operating since

1999 and presently located at 66 Broadway Ave. in Wawa has been operating for 25+ years, serving Wawa, White River, Dubreuilville and Hornepayne.

Algoma District Services and Administration Board together with other funders on both provincial and federal levels provide funding to implement and enhance the programs offered.

I was invited to join the Hub educators in an informational chat on their current mission, and as you can see in the photos the ladies were proudly sporting their t-shirts, colour coded to promote a different aspect in their "Foundations of Learning" campaign. The object of their quest is to inspire dialogue

between Educators and families about the important work being done at the Best Start Hub. The brightly coloured t-shirts describe the four conditions: Expression, Belonging, WellBeing and Engagement as the foundation as to what a child should experience each day in order to grow and flourish.

Please be advised that the Council of The Corporation of the Municipality of Wawa has authorized the discharge of firearms to specific individuals for the control of coyotes and wolves which have been observed within the townsite of the Municipality of Wawa, creating a dangerous situation for residents and pets in Wawa.

The subject area would include the lands known as the Michipicoten Golf Course and the Tamarack Street snow dump (see map below).

Through their bodies, words and use of materials, children develop capacities for increasingly complex communication. Opportunities to explore materials support creativity, problem solving, and mathematical behaviours.

Pauline - "Belonging". Ask me how learning happens in relationships. Belonging refers to a sense of connection to others, an individual's experiences of being valued, of forming relationships with others and making contributions as part of a group, community and natural world.

Marilyn - "Well-Being". Ask me how we support children learning to self-regulate. Wellbeing addresses the importance of physical and mental health wellness. It incorporates capacities such as self-care, sense of

self and self-regulation skills.

Robin - "Engagement". Ask me how children learn through play. When children are able to explore the world around them with their natural curiosity and exuberance, they are fully engaged. Through this type of play and enquiry, they develop skills such as problem solving, creative thinking and innovating, which are essential for learning and success in school and beyond.

Superior Children's Centre Best Start Hub invites everyone to explore the great programs offered at the drop-in centre staffed with Child Development and Early Years Practitioners and volunteers to deliver programs supporting parents and caregivers in finding information, programs and services they need. Services are offered in English and French and the building is fully wheelchair accessible. Children and caregivers can participate in early learning programs such as circle time, creative, mathematics and science activities, literacy programs and explore a variety of play opportunities. Parents, caregivers and professionals in the community can also borrow resources and participate in weekly workshops. We Are Eternal Beings

Ted Murray asks “when you look to the future, do you tend to see things as getting much better for you personally as well as for the world? Or do you tend to envision things getting worse and even more dangerous even for survival?”

Wow! I believe we have a tremendous opportunity to become more of who we are. Yes, there appear to be some challenging situations coming to our country and to the world. It has been related to the beginning of a catastrophic shift, either gradually over time that we will need to adapt to or perhaps even suddenly that will change the world literally overnight.

Regardless of what your thoughts are of recent events there is one fact that remains constant. You are - I AM an eternal Being, we are all eternal Beings. There is nothing happening on this planet that will change that. This earthly experience is merely one of many opportunities for growth and learning. Whatever happens we can be sure of monumental changes. We can choose to embrace the fact we are eternal Beings and use the changes as a major gift from the universe.

Whether you tend to grow faster through tremendous challenges or through peaceful experiences, we can trust that the universe will always provide exactly what we need for the next phase of your growth.

Instead of focusing on the future and trying to anticipate what might happen, let’s concentrate on the present moment. It’s so easy to allow our imagination to create chaos however, let’s immerse ourselves in Love and brightly shine our Light. In doing so we are preparing for the future.

The only thing assured in your future is that you will someday leave this body. When you are filled with gratitude and are generously sharing your Light with others you are creating a future that is guaranteed to be joyful and fulfilling. Let the future take care of itself by

truly living in the present.

The planet is in a time of extreme shifts. Perhaps today will be seen as another of those days. However, political shifts are not as important as your personal shift. What is your role in either bringing in the new world or sitting back and allowing the world to take monumental steps backward in so many areas?

We are constantly faced with the choice of how to show up in the world. And at this time in our history let us look at what we can do to meet our purpose on this planet. Is there still more to be done to fulfill our role in this transformational journey? Perhaps now is the time to reignite our passion to connect with our divine mission in a more powerful, more authentic, and more meaningful way. I believe the world needs our commitment and our strength more now than ever. It is our destiny to assist our planet and every living Being that calls it home at this most delicate moment of choice. Gregg Braden adds “The energy that powers the world is the key to elevating each member of our global family to a higher standard of living."

Blogger Murray asks what our response is to the incredible shift that has taken place in our planet. He provides a few choices (i) Do nothing and simply ignore the outside world and pretend it has no impact on your life. (ii) Become politically active and speak out to injustice in whatever way seems appropriate, such as protests, marches, boycotts, letter-writing, etc. (iii) Recognize that people are confused and hurting and need the support of someone they can trust, and thus you become inspired to share your energy and your solutions. (iv) Focus on your internal development and bringing more Light and Love into the planet. I choose the last two potentials. REVIEW Review of Long-Term Management Direction White River Forest (2018-2028) Forest Management Plan The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), White River Forest Product (WRFP) and the White River Local Citizen committee (WRLCC) invite you to review and comment on the proposed longterm management direction for the 2018-2028 Forest Management Plan (FMP) for the White River Forest.

The Planning Process The FMP takes approximately two years to complete. During this time, five formal opportunities for public and Aboriginal involvement are provided. The first opportunity (Stage 1) for this FMP occurred on March 2, 2016 when the public was invited to “Participate” in the development of the plan. This 'Stage 2' notice is: • To invite you to review and comment on: - the proposed long-term management direction for the forest; - the areas which could reasonably be harvested, and the preferred areas for harvest operations, during the ten-year period of the plan; - the analysis of alternative one kilometer wide corridors for each new primary road which is required for the next 20 years.

• To request your contribution to background information and previously unmapped values information to be used in planning.

How to Get Involved To facilitate your review, a summary of the proposed long-term management direction for the forest can be obtained from the company and MNRF locations listed below. A summary map(s) of the preferred and optional harvest areas for the 10-year period of the plan and primary road corridors for each new primary road, which is required for the next 20 years, will also be available.

In addition to the most current versions of the information and maps which were available at Stage 1 of the public consultation, background information and sources of direction that are available includes the following: • Summary of public comments and submissions received to date and any responses to those comments and submissions; • A summary report of the results of the desired forest and benefits meeting; • Environmental analysis, including use management strategies of the alternative corridors for each new primary road; • Maps that portray past and approved areas of harvest operations for the current forest management plan and the previous 10 years; • Criteria used for the identification of areas that could reasonably be harvested during the 10-year period of the plan; • Summary report of the activities of the local citizen’s committee to date.

The summary of the proposed long-term management direction and the supporting information described in this notice will be available at the White River Forest Product (WRFP) office and at the MNRF Wawa District Office at the locations shown below during normal office hours for a period of 30 days, January 25, 2017 to February 24, 2017. Comments on the proposed long-term management direction for the White River Forest must be received by Svetlana Zeran of the planning team at the MNRF Wawa District Office by February 24, 2017.

Meetings with representatives of the planning team and the LCC can be requested at any time during the planning process. Reasonable opportunities to meet planning team members during non-business hours will be provided upon request. Le Hockey Des Réunit Les Familles De L’école Saint-Joseph Le 20 décembre, parents et élèves de l’école SaintJoseph (Wawa) ont chaussé leurs patins pour les joutes de hockey élémentaire et secondaire. Il s’agissait d’un moment familial important dans les traditions de l’école élémentaire et de l’école secondaire Saint-Joseph. Parents, anciens, membres du person-

nel et élèves se sont rendus à l’aréna pour des joutes de hockey amicales élèves contre parents. Pour certaines équipes, trois générations s’affrontaient sur la glace! Les loups ont remporté la victoire par un point (7 à 6) alors que les Chevaliers ont perdu par un point (5 à 6). Félicitations à tous les participants.

Wawa Curling Clubby News Johanna Rowe The 2017 Curling season is well under way and there is a lot going on in the local curling rink. The Wawa Curling Club currently has 9 men teams playing on Monday night, 12 ladies teams playing on Tuesday night, and 8 mixed teams playing on Thursday evening.

In February, Ecole St. Joseph will be hosting a regional high school curling play down! We are super excited to see the next generation of curlers enjoying this unique game.

The curling bonspiel season is just around the corner.

If you are interested in trying your hand at curling, please do not hesitate to join us for the Wawa Mixed Bonspiel, scheduled for February 24th and 25th. For more information on this bonspiel please contact Tom Terris.

Budget Needs To Work For Our Smallest Businesses There is a small army of civil servants and political staffers working on this year’s federal budget. They are planning tax measures and initiatives that could steward the economy by promoting fiscal growth and stability. If all goes well, it will result in the creation and maintenance of jobs. Before that happens, the Minister of Finance will receive submissions and specific requests for the budget.

As you may well imagine, the bigger the group - for instance the banking sector - the more sway their requests will carry.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are those whose request can’t cut through the din in the lead up to a budget.

This is problematic in general and more so for the kinds of businesses we depend on in rural and northern Canada.

While there are a number of items of great importance to Northern Ontario that should be addressed in this year’s budget, I submit that it is paramount for the document to leave no stone unturned in support of our smallest businesses. These are family -run enterprises that may hire a few employees a year.

Seasonal businesses make up a large number of these Ma and Pa outfits and some of them have been thrown a curve ball from Revenue Canada that the government simply must reconsider.

The problem is exemplified by small campgrounds which are having their status as small businesses revoked if they hire fewer than five employees. This has sent shock-waves through the campground community and hardly a week goes by that MPs aren’t submitting petitions signed by campers asking the government to stand down from this cash grab.

The petitioners point out that the bottom line for these businesses can be razor thin and without small business status, tax bills will balloon and so will the cost of camping. In many cases they won’t be able to compete or carry on.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) measures that affect family run campgrounds also apply to family run storage businesses.

Reclassifying these businesses after the fact means that entire business models can suddenly be invalidated with the stroke of a pen. While there are ways these ventures can build themselves up to re-establish small businesses credentials with CRA, the issue at hand is how the whole problem was imposed in an arbitrary manner.

It is well proven that people

respond to incentives, but we should also consider that people respond to disincentives as well. Over-taxing Ma and Pa ventures can drive them out of business. In a big city, this might seem like a paper cut, but in a smaller community it’s more like a gash. If the CRA was adamant that businesses like these should not be eligible for small business status, it would have made sense to grandfather existing businesses through a period of adjustment while reserving the reclassified option for new ventures.

Nothing good can come from measures that force family businesses to close. When compared to the lax treatment CRA affords wealthy individuals caught in offshore tax avoidance schemes it appears as if there are two solitudes in the tax-man’s Canada. The little guy gets the stick, while the well-to-do get the kid glove treatment.

There is a budget coming up which represents an opportunity to do something about the very bad optics that surrounds the family-run campground saga. Here’s hoping that message is being heard and the interests or rural and northern Canada will get the respect they deserve.

Ontario Taking Next Step To Protect Water Resources Proposed Fee Would Support Better Groundwater Research and Management As part of Ontario's plan to protect water resources, the province is proposing a new fee for water bottling companies that take groundwater.

Currently, water bottlers are charged $3.71 for every million litres of groundwater they take. Ontario is proposing water bottlers pay an additional $500 fee, which would bring the cost up to $503.71 for every million litres of groundwater taken.

The proposed fee would help recover the costs of managing groundwater taken by water bottlers, including supporting scientific research, policies, outreach and compliance, and would further build upon Ontario's recent actions to protect groundwater, including: • Placing a moratorium on all new and expanded permits to take water from groundwater sources for water bottling • Reviewing existing rules for water bottlers and undertaking further research to ensure longterm groundwater protection, including considering the impacts of climate change and future demand on water sources • Engaging Indigenous partners on groundwater management • Consulting with communities and industry on changes to groundwater management practices.

People across Ontario are encouraged to provide their input on the proposed new fee for water bottlers through the Environmental Registry, available until March 20, 2017.

Protecting Ontario's groundwater sources for future generations is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

Quick Facts • If approved, the proposed fee would be among the highest in Canada.

• Ontario finalized a twoyear moratorium on new and expanded water takings by bottling companies on Dec. 16, 2016. The moratorium will remain in effect until Jan. 1, 2019.

• Ontario is also seeking feedback from the public on stricter rules for existing water bottling companies that use groundwater. The proposed rules are posted on the Environmental Registry for comment and will remain open until Jan. 31, 2017.

• In Ontario, water bottling facilities must apply for permits to take water from groundwater sources if the facility takes more than 50,000 litres of water in a day.

• Ontario’s drinking water is among the best protected in the world.

Staff and students at Michipicoten High School are back in the swing of things in 2017. The Winter Break started off with a talent show and luncheon for students and parents. We have many talented students in our school, including pianists, diablo masters, comedic Grade 9's and our very own version of ‘JibJab’ featuring the Grade 12 English class and some of our teachers’ faces! Thank you to Mrs. Morrison’s Grade 12 Health and Nutrition class for preparing some of the wonderful dishes and getting things out and ready for our students and guests. Also, to the staff, students and parents who brought in desserts and other goodies: thank you. The afternoon was filled with a variety of activities, including the annual student/teacher hockey game, board games, cookie decorating, and games in the gymnasium.

Another wonderful event brought to us by the Grade 12 Health and Nutrition class was the December bake sale held at Northern Credit Union to raise funds for the school. More information will follow, but a heartfelt thank you to all those who bought goodies and to the Credit Union for hosting the bake sale.

The regular season of girls’ volleyball and boys’ basketball has just wrapped up.

The last games of the season were on last Thursday against Dubrueilville. The junior and senior boys’ teams will be advancing to NSSSAA. Congratulations to all teams and coaches and a very special thank-you to our community partner coach Matthew Trudeau for working with our boys’ basketball teams.

Coming soon will be badminton team tryouts.

Classes are winding down, so that means final projects and exam preparation! Exams begin on Friday, January 27th and run to February 2nd.

Exams are held in the morning with the White River bus leaving at noon. There are no scheduled classes in the afternoons giving students to time work on and culminating projects. Let’s not leave things to the last minute!

Friday, February 3rd is a professional development day and second semester will start

on Monday, February 6th with a fresh set of courses for everyone.

We welcomed Mrs. T. Bernath back as co-vice principal with Miss Rowe for this semester.

We have had a variety of clubs and events happening at MHS, including Art Club run by Ms. Rota, Intramurals: pizza and play on Fridays, Spirit Council run by Mrs. Morrison, and Band run by Mr. Larrett. As well, Ms. Rota’s Lead class offers a hot lunch for a minimal cost each Thursday.

We will be saying goodbye to Ms. Samantha Rota, as she will be leaving us for second semester. She was a real Viking and spent much of her free time with students and organizing activities for them. She will be missed, and we wish her the best of luck in her teaching career as well as for her upcoming wedding this summer!

Congratulations to Anna Lachine who submitted her art in the Youth Art contest to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. Her artwork was one of ten pieces selected from across Ontario. Her artwork will be displayed as a banner outside Ontario’s Legislative Assembly in Toronto.

Legion News It looks like winter has had a hiccup, but some of us like a break from the cold. At the branch we are just getting warmed up for some of our fundraisers.

Our Legion ladies will have another luncheon on Thursday, January 26th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and they will serve BBQ’d chicken on a bun or wrap and baked beans with biscuits. So come and enjoy.

Our cribbage winners last Saturday were 1st Irene and Peter, 2nd Erin and Joan and Jeanette and Carol (some close games), and boobs Lordy and Louis. Meat spin was won by Maureen.

Mary's mother told her to write a letter to Grandma. So Mary started to write, "Dear Grandma, I will write this very slow for you because I know you always read very slow!”

Seniors Lunch - Keeping Wawa Informed

Chris Wray, Mayor Rody, Maury O'Neill, CR Besner, Alex Patterson Article & photo by Barb Fisher Last week the annual Seniors Luncheon gave testimony that our senior population are eager to stay abreast of our exciting and changing times. This is the second year for the luncheon update sponsored by the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and Municipality of Wawa, and after a great lunch provided by our catering officiado Judy Page and assistants, Mayor Rody opened the presentations with an update of what to expect in the coming year.

Town Council and Administration have been working diligently to secure government grants and have had a very successful year in doing so. 2017 promises to be an even more lucrative year with our national leaders stepping up to their promises of grants and funding for aging infrastructure and other municipal projects which reflects a healthy economic outlook for our future.

• July 1st weekend Wawa will be celebrating Canada's 150th Birthday with all stops unplugged - unveiling of our new goose, fireworks, and the annual musical festival rescheduled for this time.

• Housing Survey - giving residents the opportunity to provide input into the study providing data needed to support the building of new housing units, whether for seniors, families or singles. An application for funding from the Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation has been made to enable our Consultants to develop a business plan to ensure that whatever direction is taken, the project will be financially manageable.

Chris Wray, CEO - Council and Administration have been diligently pursuing grant opportunities and have done a great job in investing in

reserve dollars, all alleviating the strain on our tax dollars.

• $2.9 million government funding has been received and used for two main projects, the landfill expansion and sewage lagoon upgrade.

• an application has been made for $2.8 million in grants to proceed on the Connecting Link project.

It is anticipated that the streets of Chris Simon Dr. to Main St. will be reconstructed reducing four lanes to three with two bike lanes, one down each side.

• other projects anticipated are upgrades to the arena and community centre, waterfront rejuvination, and a fresh coat of paint to spruce up our parklands, Tourist Information Centre and public works equipment.

Maury O'Neill, EDC-CEO - Housing survey - the surveys have been widely distributed throughout the town and it is important that everyone have their say and get involved in our future housing health. Here is the chance to get involved in our community and make positive change happen. Filling out the survey runs to January 31st at which time draw prizes will be randomly drawn for a $50 gift card from ValuMart or Canadian Tire. So don't delay and join the cause.

• Heat Gun Loan - a heat gun appliance designed to detect heat loss in the home is available for loan at the EDC office. It is a quick, easy to use appliance that could save energy costs.

Beverly Boyd - Wawa & Area Victim Services (WAVS) Executive Director. WAVS offers coordinated services and volunteer support in assisting and empowering victims of crime, tragedy, and survivors of sexual assault and abuse. Bev talked about one of the sad truths of the times,

scams that target seniors who are more trusting and how to combat the issue.

• Tea and Talk Series held monthly at the Seniors Drop In Centre and the Community Hall in Hawk Junction.

The Hacker's Attack Casper Maroni was a smart teenager, in fact, considered a genius. He was in university by the age of 14.

He had been enrolled by his parents, Eliza and Nelson Maroni, at the University of Toronto in Computer Sciences for the school year starting in September, 2013.

He was given a minor in the theoretical physics course. His parents called him another Dr. Sheldon Cooper, as in 'The Big Bang Theory' TV sitcom when they took him in to the Registrar to get signed up. That was their favourite TV program. The Registrar just smiled and said 'really'. If they had only seen him inwardly rolling his eyes and what he was saying to himself! However, he remained outwardly pleasant, especially after they had made a generous endowment to the university, along with the tuition fee.

He did not have to worry about living on campus, as his parents had arranged for him to board with Nelson's sister Amelia.

Unfortunately for Casper his first love was music. He was considered a piano protege by the age of 9, but he was equally gifted in violin and saxophone, of all things. He had been playing the piano since the age of 3, when he received a toy one for Christmas.

He took to the violin at 6, and the organ at 10 at his church, Water Street United there in Orangeville.

He was a tall lanky boy, and so was lucky to be able to reach the peddles, although it was a stretch for him. His piano teacher was Paul Guilton, who was also the organist at that church. Guilton had got him interested in the violin through his friend, Saxby Coulton.

In all this disciplines his potential became obvious. He could scan any sheet of music that he was given, and immediately play it masterfully. Guilton declared that he was another Mozart. At age 12 his parents were approached and encouraged to have him pursue his musical talent. He was quite disappointed when they declined the suggestion, telling him that they no longer supported his musical interests, instead wanting him to concentrate on his academic courses. They explained how they had already charted out a career in Computer Sciences for him. No matter what he said to them, Guilton could not persuade his parents to even consider continuing lessons for even a couple of hours a week.

However, unbeknownst to his parents, Guilton had met with Casper one Sunday after church very briefly, while they were talking to some of the other congregation. It was long enough to make arrangements to meet him on Monday afternoon after school.

Details were finalized to go to the church Tuesday and Thursday afternoons after school was out.

He had come up with the excuse himself, telling his parents he was tutoring math to a student in his class.

Over the time he was in high school, Guilton covered the costs of the lessons. This had been kept secret from his parents.

Then when he entered university, Guilton, with the help of a small group of musicians in Orangeville where the Maroni's lived, had all chipped in and paid for the expensive tuition for

the music program at the Julliard School of Music, Toronto campus. They had even gone so far as to arrange an appearance with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall in May, 2014 at the end of his first year of university. His Aunt Amelia was also on board and with this cover up from Caspers' parents.

She recognized his talent too, and also knew his parents, especially Nelson, would never agree to do this for him. Alas she knew her brother all too well.

But as usually happens, all good things must come to an end, and sometimes it comes innocently enough with just a casual word or act. You just knew that their parents would find out sooner or later that their son had been pursuing a music career on the side, without their approval.

It happened in December over the Christmas holidays. On the day before Christmas Day, a call came to the Maroni house for Casper. His mother just happened to take the call. She informed the caller that he was not home at the moment, but was there a message? The caller gave her name as Michaela Potborski from the Julliard School of Music, just wanting to wish him a Merry Christmas. His mother was puzzled why she would be calling her son. “How do you happen to know my son?”, she inquired.

She was stunned to learn that he was a student at the school. She curtly thanked her for the call and hung up. She was fuming he had gone behind their backs and got involved in music, when they had expressly forbade it – considering it a distraction to his main studies of computer technology. That was an up and coming profession to get into, they kept saying to everyone. Besides, they had great plans for him to come into their on-line fashion clothing company. That way they could get free expertise for setting up and distributing their merchandise, and more importantly, the anti- hacking prevention that was suddenly becoming such a concern for all businesses, small and large.

At first, she planned to confront him that day when he got home.

But on reflection, she decided to hold off to the New Year so as not to ruin the holidays. She also did not want to tell her husband because she knew what a hothead he was. The last thing she wanted was to have him berating Casper, or going after the school and those responsible for this deception. No, she decided, she would find an appropriate time to talk to Casper alone first, and see what the story was. Then she would be able to get a better feel as to what action to take.

She was not as opposed to this music pursuit as her husband was, since her own mother had been a well respected piano teacher.

But she did not dare go against her husband. He ruled the roost.

She had encountered his wrath in many ways over the years. This was going to require some delicate maneuvering.

She got her chance on New Year's Day. After lunch he had gone to his room to do some homework on his laptop. Her husband had gone next door to watch the Rose Bowl football game.

She knocked on his bedroom door, and went in. He was laying on his bed with his computer on his lap, appropriately enough for a laptop computer. He looked up and stopped typing. He asked, “What's up, Mother?”

Now that she was here to confront him, she hesitated, unsure what to say to him. Her speech that she had rehearsed all day flew out of her mind. She nervously moved over to the bed, and sat down on the edge. He looked at her. She took a deep breath, and began. “I understand you are taking music lessons at an expensive school in Toronto. I thought we had forbidden you to pursue this interest of yours. Why have you disobeyed us?”

Without batting an eye, he replied, “I had this opportunity, and knew it might not come to me again. So I went for it. And it has been wonderful. I have learned so much at Julliard already. And besides, it has not impacted my computer science studies, or other classes either. My marks are all A or A+. In fact, it is really getting boring. It is such an easy course, so it has given me a lot of extra time to concentrate on my music.

Promise not to tell anyone, but I have even composed my own concerto. I am hoping to perform it at Carnegie Hall in New York someday soon. Isn't that exciting?

Aren't you happy for me?”

Eliza was stunned at all of this.

She didn't know what to say. She was speechless for the moment.

But finally she got over the shock, and replied to him. “Why yes, that is wonderful. But I don't know what your father will have to say about all of this. You know how determined he is that you get that degree and come into the business with us.” Casper pleaded. “Why does he even have to know? And by the way, how did you find out?”

She blushed, and confessed about the call before Christmas.

She went on. “Well, I have kept it a secret, as I needed time to figure out how to approach this situation, and come up with a solution.”

“And what did you come up with?” he asked her in impatiently. She fidgeted with her hands, staring at them momentarily.

Then she looked up at him, and declared, “I had a plan to tell your father, and try to counter any objection he had. But now after what you have just told me, I will try my best to keep this from him.

I don't know how long that will be.

It's a great risk for both of us if and when he finds out.”

“Well, Mother, we will cross that bridge when the time comes.

Thanks for understanding. I thought you were just as opposed to my music as Father was. It will give me courage to face him when I have to. In fact, I will tell him before I go back to school next week. That way it will be out in the open, and we can move on from there.” She gasped in horror. “No, you can't. Not now. We have had such a nice holiday. Let's not ruin it. Just leave well enough alone. Please!” He saw the look of fear on her face. He relented, and agreed to say nothing.

This pact was soon broken. In fact, it all exploded later that night after Nelson came home from the neighbours. It was nearly ten o'clock when he came storming in through the front door, yelling out Casper's name. He was in his bedroom. He opened the door and peeked out. He heard his father going room to room, looking for him. Cassper just knew that the 'gig' was up. He was scared to go down, as he knew the results of his tirades. But knowing his mother would be there to

support him, gave him this inner resolve to confront his father. He headed downstairs and met him in the living room. He made the first move. Casper smiled cheerfully, and asked, “What's up Father? Did your team win?” He didn't even know who was playing, as football held no interest to him. But he hoped to defuse his father's anger. He was unsuccessful. “Never mind that. I want to know why you disobeyed us, and pursued this music nonsense. I just found out from my buddy that you are enrolled in some fandangle music school. His daughter Janine is in one of your classes.

I want to know how long this has been going on, and who paid for this.” Casper lost his confidence as he tried to come up with an answer to these questions.

He didn't want to get anyone in trouble. He wished his mother was in the room to back him up and restore his courage. But she seemed to have disappeared, up to the bathroom, he realized, as he heard the toilet flush. He took a deep breath and said, “Since September, and just some friends.”

He deliberately left out mentioning Guilton and his aunt's financial help and encouragement.

Nelson just stood there, his anger building. Casper became scared when he saw his father clench his fists. That was always the signal that action was imminent. He turned to run out of the room, and get up to his bedroom.

He only got to the first step when his father collared him, and yelled at him, “Don't you run away from me, you little coward. I am not finished talking to you.” He dragged him back to the living room and threw him down on the couch.

He roared, “I will get this music obsession out of you one way or another.” Casper was terrified what that meant. He found out all too soon. His father moved in front of him and slapped him on the face, and continued hitting him several more times. Casper was not very strong. He had no chance to escape the blows. Then his father grabbed his right wrist, and was on the verge of bending it backwards, in order to break it, when Casper screamed out in both pain and terror. “Father, stop! I will give up my music. I'm sorry.” Then he had a surefire idea to stop him dead in his tracks.

“Father, if you break my hand, I will not be able to type on my computer, and what good would I be at the business. You want me there, don't you.” It worked. His father let go of the bent wrist and got up off him. He was panting as he calmed down. He continued to stand over his son. “Yes, you are correct. Okay, then. You will drop your music and concentrate on school. I'll call the music school next week and cancel your enrollment. Once you graduate and get our business up and running, maybe then we can see about getting you set up for some lessons in your spare time.” Considering the matter settled, Nelson went to the kitchen to get a beer. When he came back to the living room, Casper was gone. He had run up to his room in tears.

However, the next morning he came downstairs and acted as if nothing had happened the night before. He kissed his mother on the cheek, and cheerily said hi to his father.

He went back to school for the next term. He graduated in May of 2014. There was no concert at Roy Thomson Hall. Those plans had been put on hold. The enrollment had been canceled by his father. Casper gave his teachers and classmates the story about

needing to concentrate on his main studies, but assured them that once he was working, he would pursue his music career again. They were all disappointed, but understood.

He began working at home for the fashion accessory business as planned. His mother designed the jewelry and other accessories, and his father made the product.

They had rented a small store in a strip mall in Orangeville. Casper worked diligently on getting a program set up to display the online finished product, process credit card and debit payments of their customers, and banking for depositing earnings. He also set up the bookkeeping files. It took him only a couple of weeks to get this all set up. His father was pleased how well his son was doing. He was sure that he would be leaving his company in good hands when the time came for him to retire. The business began to thrive with this new organization and website access.

But things collapsed in early September of 2014. On a Friday afternoon when Nelson had decided to work from home the computer system seemed to crash. Nelson got booted out of the bookkeeping file he was in. He tried to get back in but it denied him entry, saying 'incorrect password'. He began to panic. He left his study where his computer was set up. He looked around for Casper, but he was nowhere to be found. He came back to his computer and stared at the flashing message on the screen: “You have been hacked. All your customers data is on line, being auctioned off at this very moment. Your clients will not be happy to learn all their personal information has just now been sold to Russian hackers. You are ruined. The Mozart Hackers Group.”

Nelson was frantic. He didn't know what to do. He could not find his son anywhere. He finally called a friend who gave him the name of a company that specialized in such hacking attacks. A tech came over right away. By nine that night he had found the source of the malware. To his father's shock, it came from Casper's personal computer.

Then on Saturday night, he got a call from his sister. She was calling from New York. She told him about the successful debut that Casper had at Carnegie Hall. He had put on a program of Beethoven, Mozart, and the finale was his very own Concerto composition. Nelson listened in stunned silence as she went on.

He now knew why he could not find him that Friday afternoon – he was on his way to New York!

All he could think of was that Casper had betrayed him, indeed ruined him, and all for the music.

He finally realized what a mistake he had made in not encouraging Casper's love of music. He now began to think about how he should have let him follow that musical path, and likely he would have come into the business more willingly. Now he had to decide whether to have his son arrested for espionage, or whatever the law would call this. Or does he decline to lay charges, and get the system up and running again, and then try to make amends with Casper, to get him back into the family fold. And knowing Nelson's temperament, you can guess that he likely ensured Casper's arrest as soon as he got back to Canada.

But he might surprise you. Good or bad, which will it be? It's your guess.....

OPP Respond To Two Mischief Incidents (CHAPLEAU, ON) – On Sunday January 22nd, 2017 at approximately 3:30 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment responded to two separate mischief incidents within the town of Chapleau. Both incidents took place between the hours of 3:00 am and 6:00 am.

During the incident the properties were vandalized where a glass door was damaged and vinyl flooring.

Chapleau Woman Charged With Drug Offences (CHAPLEAU, ON) – On Tuesday January 17, 2017 at approximately 1:00 pm members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment and members of the North East Emergency Response Team (E.R.T) had occasion to intercept a drug transaction between two individuals. During the investigation police located and seized approximately 5.9oz of cannabis resin (hash oil) and 31g of cannabis (marihuana).

As a result Vicki MCWATCH (26) of Chapleau Ontario was charged with the following offences; • Adult Traffic Schedule II Substance- Cannabis Marihuana under 3 Kilograms contrary to section 5(1) of the Control Drug and Substance Act,

Adult Possession of a Schedule II SubstanceCannabis Marihuana under 30grams contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA, • Adult Fail to Comply with Probation Order contrary to section 7333.1(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was held into custody for bail hearing in Timmins Ontario on Wednesday January 18th, 2017.

Push For Change Comes To East Algoma On January 22nd, 2017, a former homeless youth and current entrepreneur, Joe Roberts, will be pushing a shopping cart, (a symbol of chronic homelessness) through the East Algoma area. The Push for Change is a 9000 km, 517 day trek across Canada to raise awareness and funds for ending youth homelessness. On January 25th, Joe will be in Blind River. From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., there will be a luncheon at WC Eaket Secondary School. And, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Joe will be at Ecole Jeunesse Nord in the Alain Bray Auditorium.

Various grades from neighbouring schools are also invited to attend.

On January 26th, Joe will be in the Thessalon and Bruce Mines area. There will be a “Meet and Greet” at Thessalon Public School and Bruce Mines Arthur Henderson Public School in the morning. After that, Joe will be at Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS) to walk with students and then give a presentation at 2:00

p.m.

Motorists are asked to drive extra carefully and slow down when approaching or passing Joe, as he walks along Highway 17 throughout the East Algoma area.

The Municipality of Wawa requires School Crossing Guards within the Infrastructure Services Department.

Reporting to the Director Infrastructure Services, the successful candidate will be responsible to escort school children across a roadway safely at designated school crossing locations in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 1. Strong public relations abilities with good communication skills, including verbal and listening with the ability to follow directions and procedure.

2. Must be alert, able to maintain high degree of mental concentration, with visual and hearing ability to recognize traffic at a safe distance.

3. Ability to walk pedestrians safely across busy intersections, and react safely and quickly to traffic conditions.

4. Must be able to display a school crossing stop sign in an upright position so that it is visible to vehicular traffic approaching from each direction, and extend the other arm out parallel for one minute on a frequent basis.

5. Physically fit, with the ability to perform all physical requirements of the activities.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be able to perform duties outdoors in all diverse weather conditions.
